Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News On August 8, nearly three years after the United States pulled out of Iraq, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes to commence on Islamic State positions in northern Iraq, as the group’s fighters advanced towards the Kurdish capital of Erbil. For six weeks prior to the strikes the Islamic State made stunning gains within Iraq, effectively dismantling the border with Syria and defeating the Iraqi army with little in the way to stop them. In the final installment of VICE News’ unprecedented look inside the Islamic State, reporter Medyan Dairieh journeys 200 miles from the the group’s power base in the Syrian city of Raqqa to the border with Iraq. There, after defeating the Iraqi army manning the checkpoint, Islamic State fighters work further to bulldoze the border. As they clear apart a barrier that divided Iraq and Syria, Islamic State fighters declare an end of the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a nearly 100-year-old pact between France and Britain that divided up the Middle East. For now, that area between Iraq and Syria is part of a new territory: the Islamic State. Liberia senate race: Landslide win for George Weah

The former football star George Weah has won a landslide victory in Liberia's senate elections, in polls disrupted by the Ebola outbreak. Mr Weah got 78% of the vote for the Montserrado county seat, which includes the capital Monrovia. He beat Robert Sirleaf, the son of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who took nearly 11%. Low turnout in the poll, which was first planned for October, was blamed on concerns about Ebola. Strict health controls were in place to try to prevent the spread of the disease. Those who came to polling stations had their temperature taken, were told to stand a metre (3ft) apart and wash their hands before and after voting. Liberia has been one of the countries worst affected by Ebola, with almost 3,400 deaths, the UN says. Other winners in the senate elections include Jewel Howard-Taylor, the ex-wife of the jailed former president Charles Taylor, and the former rebel leader Prince Johnson. Both retained their seats. The National Elections Commission chairman, Jerome Korkoya, called the conclusion of the vote "the end of a crucial journey". Mr Weah won the first round of the 2005 presidential election, losing the runoff to Ms Johnson-Sirleaf. He is the only African to be named Fifa's world player of the year, winning in 1995.

The Italian-flagged Norman Atlantic sent its first distress signal some 40 nautical miles northwest of the island of Corfu when a fire broke out in the garage, sparking the first of a rash of explosions that quickly engulfed the vessels in flames. Eight other ships have sped to the site but gale-force winds, heavy hail and low visibility have hampered the rescue operation, joined by neighbouring Italy and Albania. “The situation is difficult and risky,” Merchant Marine Minister Miltiades Varvitsiotis said. “We understand that the explosions on the boat are ongoing.” Some 120 passengers who managed to evacuate aboard a liferaft remained adrift in choppy waters north of Corfu.

On August 8, nearly three years after the United States pulled out of Iraq, President Barack Obama ordered airstrikes to commence on Islamic State positions in northern Iraq, as the group’s fighters advanced towards the Kurdish capital of Erbil.

The former football star George Weah has won a landslide victory in Liberia\'s senate elections, in polls disrupted by the Ebola outbreak.

The National Elections Commission chairman, Jerome Korkoya, called the conclusion of the vote \

Norman Atlantic: Hundreds Of Passengers Trapped On Burning Ferry Off Greece

Pleading for help, nearly 500 passengers and crew members aboard a flaming ferry remained stranded between Greece and Italy as a massive yet ill-fated rescue operation, challenged by foul weather, left the vessel adrift without propulsion. on Sunday.
