Security personnel arrest militant in Assam

Dhubri, March 09 (ANI): Security forces arrested a member of an insurgent group in Dhubri district of Assam state. Acting on a tip off, army personnel along with police officials carried out a joint operation. The arrested militant has been identified as Abu Ansarar and a member of Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA). A powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED), weighing about 15 kg, was also recovered and destroyed by the Army in Assam's Chirang district while the militant was nabbed in Dhubri district. Security forces also seized a 9 mm pistol along with four rounds of ammunition from the militant's possession. MULTA operates mostly from Dhubri and the state has witnessed the maximum number of incidents involving terrorists from this group.

Flood-like situation continues in Assam

Dhubri, June 14 (ANI): Residents in district of Assam state continue to live on the edge as heavy rainfall in the state kept the Brahmaputra river flowing well above the danger mark. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) the mighty Brahmaputra river flowed above the danger mark in Nimatighat in Dhubri with its tributaries washing away roads, embankments and bridges in various other districts. Submerged houses and crops are a common sight in the district. Reportedly, the met department has warned of more rains in the coming days. Residents in Dhubri are now using boats to commute and requisite advisories have been issued by the district administration in this regard. As per ASDMA, over 300,000 people across 15 districts of the state have been affected.

Midday meal scam: Rotting-worm-ridden rice meant for school children

Deadly Worms in Rice When a group of student activists of AASAA (All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam) barged into the kitchen room of a school, they discovered this horrific reality. There were worms all over the rice -- which was rotting and the very same rice was supposed to be served to the students of the 105 No. Baronitara Part II (Pucca Line) Lower Primary School. The school is located in Chapor Tea Estate (there are about 16 schools in the three tea gardens at Chapor) in Dhubri district of Assam and majority of the students are Adivasis. The Headmaster, Mr Harekrishna Goswami, who appears in one of the video clips has been arrested only after this bizarre incident came to light. The AASAA members led by its central vice-president Rejan Horo, stopped the cooks from preparing the meal for the children. It seems that the rice had been lying like that in about 6/7 sacks for the last six months. On September 10, 2013, the cooks were getting ready to prepare the midday meal, when AASAA boys prevented them. Although the villagers had reported the matter to the higher authorities, no action had been taken -- which means that more people are responsible for siphoning of rice and funds from the midday meal scheme. The question is how the headmaster could think of providing such rotting rice to be served to the children. Earlier also, the children had been complaining of worms in rice served to them in school, but the matters were buried under no evidence.
