A Japanese architecture and engineering firm has proposed building a massive ring of solar panels on the surface of the moon, effectively turning it into a solar power plant.
Dubbed the 'Luna Ring', the collections of solar panels will measure 11,000 km long and 19 km wide. The belt will capture solar energy from the sun, and transmit the power back to "receiving stations" on Earth using microwaves and lasers.
Shimizu Corporation estimated that the plant would emit a total of 13,000 terawatts of power - triple the amount of energy produced by the United States in 2011.

In theory, the lunar power plant would generate an inexhaustible supply of electricity. Also, the production will not be disrupted by weather changes or darkness.
Even though the project sounds more like a dream than a possibility, the Tokyo-based firm expects construction to commence by 2035. Robots will shoulder the bulk of the construction work, with humans overseeing the process. No estimate of the construction cost for the ambitious project has been given.
Shimizu Corporation first tabled the proposal before the devastating earthquake and tsunami that destroyed the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in 2011. There has been renewed interest in the project as the nation needs to secure alternative to nuclear power.

Robots will shoulder the bulk of the construction work, with humans overseeing the process. No estimate of the construction cost for the ambitious project has been given.

Future Cities Under Water will Blow your Mind - Underwater Cities
Do you think it’s possible for people to live in underwater cities? Although it may sound like an idea for a sequel to Christopher Nolan’s hit sci-fi film Interstellar, a Japanese construction firm says it could be a reality by 2030.
The Japanese construction company Shimizu Corp announced a $25-$26 billion underwater eco-city plan called “Ocean Spiral” of 5,000 people that draws its energy from the seabed thousands of metres below.
Shimizu Corp revealed a blueprint for the city of the future in Tokyo last week, claiming that Ocean Spiral will “capitalise on the infinite possibilities of the deep sea” to accommodate human life, as rising sea levels endanger the survival of island communities.
The blueprint shows a vast research and residential station some 10 miles in length that begins just below the sea’s surface and burrows beneath the ocean floor. The Shimizu spokesman Hideo Imamura told the Guardian:
“This is a real goal, not a pipe dream. The Astro Boy cartoon character had a mobile phone long before they were actually invented – in the same way, the technology and knowhow we need for this project will become available.”
Because of the extensive technology needed to build the structure and to sustain life below the surface of the ocean, the project will be ready no sooner than 15 years from now. If successfully completed, it would offer a truly unique view to underwater life.
According to Shimizu’s officials, the project, which has the support of a myriad of research firms and Japanese government agencies, visualizes a spiral-shaped structure comprised of three major sections.
The project’s officials are looking forward to securing funding from private industry and the government as it’s also supported by experts from Tokyo University.
Masaki Takeuchi, the manager of the project reportedly said to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper:
“It would be great if research institutions and governments become interested in our project.”
The first part is the floating surface, which will be topped by a 500-meter sphere.
According to the blueprint, the central part is a spiral 15km long with room for business zones, apartments, residential areas and hotel rooms for 5000 people.
At the very bottom at about 3000 to 4000 thousand meters under the sea the spiral will be linked to an “earth-factory” – a research center for developing energy sources.
The Shimizu spokesman told the Wall Street Journal:
“This is just a blueprint by our company, but we are aiming to develop the technology that would enable us to build an underwater living space.”
The assistant professor in the urban studies department at Tokyo University, Christian Dimmer, claimed that these “techno-utopias” such as Ocean Spiral came as a reaction to other crises like climate change and rising sea levels. He reportedly told The Guardian:
“We had this in Japan in the 1980s, when the same corporations were proposing underground and ‘swimming’ cities and 1km-high towers as part of the rush to development during the height of the bubble economy. It’s good that many creative minds are picking their brains as to how to deal with climate change, rising sea levels and the creation of resilient societies – but I hope we don’t forget to think about more open and democratic urban futures in which citizens can take an active role in their creation, rather than being mere passengers in a corporation’s sealed vision of utopia.”
According to the Guardian:
“The idea of creating communities in the sea resonates in Japan, where land-based communities are at risk from large earthquakes and tsunamis.”
The company also revealed that the spiral structure would descend as much as 9 miles to the seabed, where an “earth factory” would produce methane from carbon dioxide by using micro-organisms.

This makes it possible to analyze accurately the external wind pressure acting on buildings, which couldn’t be predicted until now. It also enables us to visualize in detail the flow field and wind environment around buildings, which couldn’t be done before."
Buildings must be structurally safe, reliable, and comfortable to use. By making the flow field around a building visible in detail, not only can the building’s design be optimized at a higher level, but the flow can be proactively utilized to create an energy-saving urban environment.
"Until now, the basic approach to buildings was simply enabling people to live there safely, without undue concerns, but nowadays, designers consider energy conservation as well. So, on the building claddings, people think about installing heat-insulating glass, using solar energy, and optimizing the building in many other ways. The external surface of a building requires detailed design, so in our research, we’re working to devise methods for accurately predicting wind pressure on external walls, to enable detailed design."
At Shimizu Corporation, the K Computer enables simulations with the same precision as wind tunnel experiments. The results are utilized to design buildings and glass exterior components in detail. The aim is to achieve wind-resistant, safe building designs, minimizing damage to buildings by typhoons and tornadoes.

Shimizu Corporation Reveals Ocean Spirals Concepts That Could House Cities Underwater
Floating spheres that house entire cities and sink to the seabed in extreme weather could be built by 2030
On Earth we've colonised deserts, forests, mountains and many other locations, but we're yet to truly live on our planet's most abundant locale, namely oceans, which cover 71 per cent of the surface. That could all be set to change though as one company has unveiled designs for floating cities that could operate both on the surface and underwater. Using a number of advanced technologies, the enormous spheres could house 5,000 people and also perform research on the seabed. The futuristic concepts were drawn up by the Shimizu Corporation in Tokyo, in partnership with Tokyo University and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology Each vast globe would float at the surface of the sea, but could be submerged in bad weather, down the centre of a gigantic spiral structure that plunges to depths of up 2.5 miles The spiral would form a path nine miles to a building on the ocean floor, which could serve as a resource development factory that could collect rare metals and rare earths.

Predicting Local Wind Pressure on Buildings and Developing a System to Control It #ipnexus
The Institute of Technology, Shimizu Corporation, the results of tests using large wind tunnels are being replicated by ultra-large-scale simulations, using a supercomputer called the K Computer. In this way, the researchers are working to develop a new method for detailed prediction of instantaneous maximum local wind pressure acting on building.
"A feature of our research is we use the K Computer to do ultra-large-scale simulations that replicate tests in a giant wind tunnel, which is 100 m long.
