The subject of Japanese artwork is a very fascinating topic at the famous Ashmolean museum. According to folklore the people of Japan are direct descendants of the Sun Goddess. It is also thought that the land of Japan is itself of divine origin To anyone familiar with the history of East Asia the Japanese are indeed a very distinctive group of people. Of course they are very aware of their unique heritage. There does exist some common ties with the mainland of Asia but the Japanese have always lived their lives separately as an island people. It is with a sense of pride that there has been Japanese artwork in the Ashmolean collection fr

Meiji Dairies Corporation (明治乳業株式会社 Meiji Nyūgyō Kabushiki-gaisha?) is the trade name of a food company in Japan, Meiji Co., Ltd. (株式会社明治 Kabushiki-gaisha Meiji?), until March 31, 2011.
It was a major dairy industry company established in 1917. Apart from dairy products like milk, ice cream, and cheese, their lineup includes sports drinks, pizza, chocolate bars and food supplements like "Toromeiku", described as a "food viscosity preparation". It has a joint venture in Thailand with Charoen Pokphand to market dairy products.
On April 1, 2009, Meiji Seika Kaisha, Ltd. and Meiji Dairies Corporation established a joint holding company, Meiji Holdings Co. (TYO: 2269), which is a constituent of the Nikkei 225 index. Two years later on the day, Meiji Dairies took over the food and healthcare business of Meiji Seika, and became a food company, "Meiji Co., Ltd.". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meiji_Dairies
Candy, also called sweets or lollies, is a confection that features sugar as a principal ingredient. The category, called sugar confectionery, encompasses any sweet confection, including chocolate, chewing gum, and sugar candy. Vegetables, fruit, or nuts which have been glazed and coated with sugar are said to be candied.
Physically, candy is characterized by the use of a significant amount of sugar, or, in the case of sugar-free candies, by the presence of sugar substitutes. Unlike a cake or loaf of bread that would be shared among many people, candies are usually made in smaller pieces. However, the definition of candy also depends upon how people treat the food. Unlike sweet pastries served for a dessert course at the end of a meal, candies are normally eaten casually, often with the fingers, as a snack between meals. Each culture has its own ideas of what constitutes candy rather than dessert. The same food may be a candy in one culture and a dessert in another. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candy

Feline Fantasies: Cats in the Floating World
http://www.japansociety.org/event/feline-fantasies-cats-in-the-floating-world
Cats were by far the most popular pets depicted in prints, paintings and book illustrations that chronicled the urban popular culture of the Edo and Meiji periods. Drawing on both the current Japan Society exhibition and the massive Japanese art collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Sarah E. Thompson, Assistant Curator for Japanese Prints at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, will examine depictions of cats in three aspects: the elegant cat, a symbol of sophistication and allure; the predatory cat, from helpful mouser to supernatural monster; and the comical cat, an anthropomorphic vehicle for humor and satire.
Life of Cats:
Selections from the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Collection
Since arriving in Japan aboard Japanese ships transporting sacred Buddhist scriptures from China in the mid-sixth century, cats have proceeded to purr and paw their way into the heart of Japanese life, folklore, and art. Life of Cats: Selections from the Hiraki Ukiyo-e Collection illustrates the depth of this mutual attraction by mining the wealth of bravura depictions of cats to be found in ukiyo-e woodblock prints of the Edo Period (1615-1867). The exhibition is divided into five sections: Cats and People, Cats as People, Cats versus People, Cats Transformed and Cats and Play. 90 ukiyo-e prints in the exhibition are on loan from the esteemed Hiraki Ukiyo-e Foundation whose holdings are revered in Japan. Select prints, paintings, sculptures, and other works borrowed from U.S. collections complement these prints, making the exhibition over 120 artworks. With cross-cultural and multi-generational appeal, Life of Cats takes viewers on a wild ride through Japan’s love affair with our feline friends.

Daimyo (daimyo): In Japanese, it can be written as 大名 .
"The Daimyo (大名 daimyō, pronounced About this sound daimjoo) were the powerful territorial lords in pre-modern Japan who ruled most of the country from their vast, hereditary land holdings. In the term, "dai" (大) literally means "large", and "myō" stands for myōden (名田), meaning private land.
Subordinate only to the shogun, daimyo were the most powerful feudal rulers from the 10th century to the middle 19th century in Japan. From the shugo of the Muromachi period through the Sengoku to the daimyo of the Edo period, the rank had a long and varied history.
The term "daimyo" is also sometimes used to refer to the leading figures of such clans, also called "lord". It was usually, though not exclusively, from these warlords that a shogun arose or a regent was chosen. Daimyo often hired samurai to guard their land and they paid the samurai in land or food. Relatively few daimyo could afford to pay samurai in money. The daimyo era came to an end soon after the Meiji restoration when Japan adopted the prefecture system in 1871." - from Wikipedia

It is with a sense of pride that there has been Japanese artwork in the Ashmolean collection from the very beginning of the museum's long history. There is the cabinet of curiosities assembled by the royal gardeners. The Tradescants in the early 17th century included a pair of Japanese zori. It was described in the 1656 catalogue of the collection as sandals made of twigs. There is a circular leather shield lacquered in Japan with a European coat of arms. However until the Ashmolean's Eastern Art Department was founded in 1961 the museum's Japanese holdings remained small. The highlight was a group of around 1300 tsuba sword guards created in the late 19th century by the eminent scientist Sir Arthur H. Church. Since 1961 the Ashmolean's Japanese collections have grown progressively. It has been steadily shaped by the generosity of patrons and also by the vision of the museum's curators. The most notable contribution came from Oliver Impey who was the curator of Japanese art at the Ashmolean museum from 19682005. During his very long career at the museum Oliver Impey build up a broad based collection of fine Japanese art. It now numbers around 5000 objects plus some 3000 potsherds. There is also a small amount of early material in the collection including haniwa a few Buddhist sculptures and some early lacquerware. Most of the collection dates from the Edo 16031867 CE and Meiji 18681912 CE periods. There were particular strengths in the fields of 17th to 18th century export porcelain as well as other export art of the Meiji period. The Ashmolean's new Japanese galleries opened in December 2009. They are designed around these very significant collections of export art. It is true they also reflect the museum's new approach to its displays. These displays emphasize connections contracts and cultural exchanges. It should be understood that the Japanese collections were formerly separated into decorative and fine art galleries. The two new Japanese galleries are organized as chronological displays Japan 16001850 and Japan from 1850. Furthermore Japanese displays are open in the thematic galleries around the facility. They illustrate the significance of international trade during the 17th century in West Meets East and also different approaches to conservation in Restoring the Past. Another reflection comes in the form of decorative uses of script in Reading and Writing. The Japanese collections are an important part of the Asian heritage present at the Ashmolean museum. To view classical Japanese artworks correctly one must reflect upon the unquestioned facts about ancient scholarship in East Asia. The scholars of both China and Japan were entirely distinct from the scholars of the West. In the West scholars tended to restrict their learning to specific areas of study through rigorous discipline of the mind. Asian scholars did not follow this same path toward understanding. They were at one and the same time scholars philosophers artists poets calligraphers essayists and very often historians. Quite naturally these scholars conceived of their culture as a cohesive organic whole. The artwork of Japan should be studied through all avenues of art religion and economic and social life. As one views such collections like the one at the Ashmolean it is necessary to contemplate the meaning of Japanese culture first. This is the best way to honor the people of Japan who painstakingly produced these excellent pieces for their civilization. Such artwork is a direct snapshot into the past which abides with us to the present. To know the present better we must understand the past.

China Part 4 - Qin Empire - ca 221-206 BCE - Terracotta Warriors - Ancient Civilizations and Theocracies
The Qin dynasty (Chinese: 秦朝; pinyin: Qín Cháo; IPA: [tɕʰǐn tʂʰɑ̌ʊ̯]) was the first imperial Kingdom of China after the period of Warring States. It lasted from 221 to 206 BC. The Kingdom was formed after the conquest of six other states by the state of Qin, and its founding King was known as Qin Shi Huang, the First King of Qin. The Qin state derived its name from its heartland of Qin, in modern-day Gansu and Shaanxi. The strength of the Qin state was greatly increased by the legalist reforms of Shang Yang in the fourth century BC, during the Warring States period. In the mid and late third century BC, the Qin accomplished a series of swift conquests, first ending the powerless Zhou dynasty, and eventually conquering the other six of the Seven Warring States to gain control over the whole of China.
During its reign over China, the Qin sought to create an imperial state unified by highly structured political power and a stable economy able to support a large military.[1] The Qin central government sought to minimize the role of aristocrats and landowners and have direct administrative control over the peasantry, who comprised the overwhelming majority of the population, and control over whom would grant the Qin access to a large labor force. This allowed for the construction of ambitious projects, such as a wall on the northern border, now known as the Great Wall of China. The Qin dynasty also introduced several reforms: currency, weights and measures were standardized, and a uniform system of writing was established. An attempt to restrict criticism and purge all traces of old dynasties led to the infamous burning of books and burying of scholars incident, which has been criticized greatly by subsequent scholars. The Qin's military was also revolutionary in that it used the most recently developed weaponry, transportation, and tactics, though the government was heavy-handed and bureaucratic.
Despite its military strength, the Qin dynasty did not last long. When the first emperor died in 210 BC, his son was placed on the throne by two of the previous emperor's advisers, in an attempt to influence and control the administration of the entire dynasty through him. The advisors squabbled among themselves, however, which resulted in both their deaths and that of the second Qin emperor. Popular revolt broke out a few years later, and the weakened empire soon fell to a Chu lieutenant, who went on to found the Han dynasty. Despite its rapid end, the Qin dynasty influenced future Chinese empires, particularly the Han, and the European name for China is thought to be derived from it.

How to Pronounce Daimyo
Learn how to say Daimyo with Japanese accent.
