Here we have a film about Chicago outsider artist Henry Darger by Coleen Fitzgibbon, assisted by Michael Thompson. It was f ilmed on super8 film at Mr. Darger's apartment on a camera by Coleen Fitzgibbon, filmmaker and Michael Thompson late spring 1973 in Chicago, IL. Invited to film by Nathan Lerner and Michael Baruch. The room was cluttered with art materials, Darger's books and artworks and newspaper clippings.

About the XFR STN Project
"XFR STN" initially arose from the need to preserve the Monday/Wednesday/Friday Video Club distribution project. MWF was a co- op "store" of the artists ́ group Colab (Collaborative Projects, Inc.), directed by Alan Moore and Michael Carter from 1986--2000, which showed and sold artists' and independent films and videos on VHS at consumer prices.
The "XFR STN" at the New Museum also addressed the wider need in the community of artists for access to media capture and migration services as a means to preserve creative productions stored in aging and obsolete audiovisual and digital formats. In addition to digitizing a portion of MWF Video Club's collection (which was housed in a storage unit in Staten Island), the "XFR STN" was also used to preserve various materials from the New Museum's own rich archive (including video formats such as U-matic and VHS tapes). Finally, in keeping with the original aims of the MWF Video Club, "XFR STN" was open to anyone with artist-originated moving image or born-digital materials. The exhibition/lab operated publically, informally exhibiting the material that was transferred, as well as rendering it available online through the Internet Archive (archive.org), an non-profit organization whose mission includes offering permanent access to historical collections that exist in digital format for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public.
Consistent with the dictum "distribution is preservation," the "XFR STN" project argues for circulation as a mode of conservation. "XFR STN" served as a collection and dissemination point for artist-produced content, as well as a hub for information about these past projects (including production materials and personal recollections). The project was both a pragmatic public service and an activity as metaphor: an opportunity to present aspects of a mediatic production process in continuous dynamic transformation.
"XFR STN" at the New Museum is project by Alan W. Moore with Taylor Moore, Alexis Bhagat, and the artists of Collaborative Projects. It is organized by Johanna Burton, Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement, with Ben Fino-Radin, Digital Conservator, Rhizome; Tara Hart, Digital Archivist, New Museum; and Jen Song, Associate Director of Education, New Museum.

Phyllis Bramson's lecture at SOFA/Outsider 2011 show: "Henry Darger's Bright and Guilty Place, (contemporary propositions about his influence.)"
Bramson draws parallels between her own mainstream work, tinged with outsider esthetics, and Darger's outsider paintings. Both of them borrow from the Dick and Jane style manual of cute girls and both take it in provocative directions, Bramson into lush naughtiness, Darger to his 15,145-page, "The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion," with its disturbing watercolor fantasy war reportage. Bramson's position is wonderment regarding his aesthetic heft, since she considers him one of the important artists of the 20th century.
Bramson's illustrated lecture is an insider take on an outsider master, and on the roots of similar strains in her own work. She describes how her childhood home (with her father's collection of erotic paintings and sculpture), reading and being affected by The Brothers Grimm fairy tales, and her own steeping in classical erotic art traditions from India and east asia have all affected her visual thinking.
This video program, including a unique illustration of Darger's apartment, courtesy of Intuit, The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, and some back and forth with gallerist Carl Hammer in the audience, is an improvement on the stultifying History of Slides 202 that has turned so many college students from Art to Dance majors.

"See 'Revolutions of the Night: The Enigma of Henry Darger' for the latest and best cinematic treatment of Darger's art and life" - ARTINFO.COM
'Revolutions of the Night' tells the story of the amazing discovery of Henry Darger's secret world of writings, paintings, objects and collections, created and collected over decades in his one room apartment in Chicago: apocalyptic visions of an imaginary war-torn planet in which children are pursued and enslaved by a race of evil adults.
Darger died unmourned in 1973 and was buried in a pauper's grave. As far as anyone knew, he had led an anonymous and isolated life, doing so-called menial jobs in hospitals on the north side of Chicago.
'Revolutions of the Night' takes us back to 1972 when Darger's lifework was uncovered-- and then almost destroyed. The film captures the story of how Darger's work came to be saved from the trash, with eyewitness accounts of the very first people to enter Darger's world, including neighbours, landlords, students, photographers, colleagues, filmmakers and psychiatrists.

Henry Darger
Henry Joseph Darger, Jr. (/ˈdɑːrdʒər/; c. April 12, 1892 – April 13, 1973) was a reclusive American writer and artist who worked as a hospital custodian in Chicago, Illinois. He has become famous for his posthumously discovered 15,145-page, single-spaced fantasy manuscript called The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, along with several hundred drawings and watercolor paintings illustrating the story. The visual subject matter of his work ranges from idyllic scenes in Edwardian interiors and tranquil flowered landscapes populated by children and fantastic creatures, to scenes of horrific terror and carnage depicting young children being tortured and massacred. Much of his artwork is mixed media with collage elements. Darger's artwork has become one of the most celebrated examples of outsider art.
Life
Darger was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Rosa Fullman and Henry Darger, Sr. on April 12, 1892.Cook County records show he was born at home, located at 350 W. 24th Street. When he was four years old his mother died of puerperal fever after giving birth to a daughter, who was given up for adoption; Henry Darger never knew his sister. One of Darger's biographers, the art historian and psychologist John M. MacGregor, discovered that Rosa had two children before Henry, but did not discover their whereabouts.

It was f ilmed on super8 film at Mr. Darger's apartment on a camera by Coleen Fitzgibbon, filmmaker and Michael Thompson late spring 1973 in Chicago, IL. Invited to film by Nathan Lerner and Michael Baruch. The room was cluttered with art materials, Darger's books and artworks and newspaper clippings.

About the XFR STN Project
"XFR STN" initially arose from the need to preserve the Monday/Wednesday/Friday Video Club distribution project. MWF was a co- op "store" of the artists ́ group Colab (Collaborative Projects, Inc.), directed by Alan Moore and Michael Carter from 1986--2000, which showed and sold artists' and independent films and videos on VHS at consumer prices.
The "XFR STN" at the New Museum also addressed the wider need in the community of artists for access to media capture and migration services as a means to preserve creative productions stored in aging and obsolete audiovisual and digital formats. In addition to digitizing a portion of MWF Video Club's collection (which was housed in a storage unit in Staten Island), the "XFR STN" was also used to preserve various materials from the New Museum's own rich archive (including video formats such as U-matic and VHS tapes). Finally, in keeping with the original aims of the MWF Video Club, "XFR STN" was open to anyone with artist-originated moving image or born-digital materials. The exhibition/lab operated publically, informally exhibiting the material that was transferred, as well as rendering it available online through the Internet Archive (archive.org), an non-profit organization whose mission includes offering permanent access to historical collections that exist in digital format for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public.
Consistent with the dictum "distribution is preservation," the "XFR STN" project argues for circulation as a mode of conservation. "XFR STN" served as a collection and dissemination point for artist-produced content, as well as a hub for information about these past projects (including production materials and personal recollections). The project was both a pragmatic public service and an activity as metaphor: an opportunity to present aspects of a mediatic production process in continuous dynamic transformation.
"XFR STN" at the New Museum is project by Alan W. Moore with Taylor Moore, Alexis Bhagat, and the artists of Collaborative Projects. It is organized by Johanna Burton, Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement, with Ben Fino-Radin, Digital Conservator, Rhizome; Tara Hart, Digital Archivist, New Museum; and Jen Song, Associate Director of Education, New Museum.

Bramson draws parallels between her own mainstream work, tinged with outsider esthetics, and Darger's outsider paintings. Both of them borrow from the Dick and Jane style manual of cute girls and both take it in provocative directions, Bramson into lush naughtiness, Darger to his 15,145-page, "The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion," with its disturbing watercolor fantasy war reportage. Bramson's position is wonderment regarding his aesthetic heft, since she considers him one of the important artists of the 20th century.
Bramson's illustrated lecture is an insider take on an outsider master, and on the roots of similar strains in her own work. She describes how her childhood home (with her father's collection of erotic paintings and sculpture), reading and being affected by The Brothers Grimm fairy tales, and her own steeping in classical erotic art traditions from India and east asia have all affected her visual thinking.
This video program, including a unique illustration of Darger's apartment, courtesy of Intuit, The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, and some back and forth with gallerist Carl Hammer in the audience, is an improvement on the stultifying History of Slides 202 that has turned so many college students from Art to Dance majors.

Last summer, thanks to our friends and dedicated Henry Darger fans, Intuit was able to have restored three maps drawn by Darger, mapping some of his "Realms of the Unreal.” The maps look wonderful. Now it’s time for the next and last step. To keep the maps in their newly fantastic condition they must be given museum quality framing. To do this, we need your help. Your contribution will ensure the maps will be around for future generations to enjoy.
Established in 1991, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art is the only nonprofit organization in the United States that is dedicated solely to presenting self-taught and outsider art. Its mission is to celebrate the power of outsider art. A part of Intuit’s permanent exhibition, the Henry Darger Room Collection draws in museum visitors everyday. The room is unique in that it is now home to Darger’s fireplace, dresser, desk, magazines, books and art supplies he diligently collected throughout his life. Within this collection of his belongings, Intuit found three maps he created that chart the lands of his 15,145 page book, In the Realms of the Unreal. Due to their fragile condition, two maps had to be restored, before they could be put on view to audiences like you. With your help, they can be viewed for generations to come.
