Butterfly (Mariah Carey song)

"Butterfly" is a song by American singer-songwriter Mariah Carey from her sixth studio album of the same name. It was released as the second single from the album on December 1, 1997 by Columbia Records. The song was written by Carey and Walter Afanasieff; both of them producing and arranging the song as well. "Butterfly" is a ballad combining elements of pop and gospel genres. Carey had originally conceived it as a house record with David Morales titled "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)". After realizing how personal the lyrics were and how they could be applied to Butterfly, she wrote the album's title track with Afanasieff. On the song's lyrics, Carey sings to someone, telling them to spread their wings and release into the world on their own, like a butterfly.

The song's music video depicts Carey in an abandoned house, trapped in a desolate life. As the video progresses, she leaves, apparently for the first time in years, and runs into a nearby meadow. Towards the end, Carey jumps over a barbed fence and goes out into the world on a horse. The song's lyrics and video were directly connected to Carey's personal life at the time. "Butterfly" was performed live on the Late Show with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live and various European television programs. The song was also a permanent part of the set-list during her Butterfly World Tour during 1998. Due to current conflict with Columbia, "Butterfly" was never issued a commercial release, therefore hindering its charting ability. The song performed weakly on the charts, peaking outside the top twenty in most countries, except for New Zealand, where it peaked at number 15. In the United States, "Butterfly" was not eligible to chart on the Hot 100 due to Billboard rules at the time.

Butterfly (Sara Tunes album)

Butterfly is the debut studio album by the Colombian singer-songwriter Sara Tunes. It was released on June 6 on Colombia and October 15, 2010 in Latin America by EMI. Butterfly was her third studio album, but counted as a debut album as the other two had not had the success expected.

Sara Tunes confirmed April 9, 2011 a tour that started in the U.S. and Canada, but Sara has not confirmed if the tour went through Latin America. The tour recorera by states like New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Boston, Florida and Orlando, among others. Tour is expected to start in late 2011 or early 2012.

Butterfly (Danyel Gerard song)

"Butterfly" is a pop song, written and recorded by the French singer-songwriter, Danyel Gérard (born Gerard Daniel Khertakian, 7 March 1939, Paris) in the late 1960s. It was initially a hit in the French language.

In the early 1970s English language words were written, and Gerard recorded it again in the United States. In 1971 he also did German, Spanish and Italian versions. "Butterfly" was a very popular song internationally, selling over seven million copies. Many other musicians recorded it, both in instrumental and vocal versions. In the U.S., that list included Eydie Gormé, Goldie Hawn and Eddy Arnold.

The single was Number 1 in Germany for fifteen weeks in summer 1971. It reached Number 11 (and spent 12 weeks) in the UK Singles Chart in October 1971. Lack of further chart activity in the UK saw both singer and song branded as a one-hit wonder. It was a similar story in the U.S., where the Gerard's single peaked at #78 in the Billboard Hot 100. In Germany he had some more songs in the charts, like "Isabella" or "Meine Stadt".

Neck (Chinese constellation)

The Neck mansion (亢宿, pinyin: Kàng Xiù) is one of the Twenty-eight mansions of the Chinese constellations. It is one of the eastern mansions of the Azure Dragon.

In Chinese Cosmology, the Kang Constellation is associated with the Kidney Organ. 亢 is a picture of a person standing with their legs open, as in horse stance, and so holds the quality of strength that comes through a proper foundation. This matches up with Chapter 8 of the Suwen, which says that the Kidney is in charge of strength and fortification. The Kidney houses the Zhi, which is in charge of solid grounding in one’s life purpose. Kang is also the neck or throat of the Azure Dragon of the East, which, while the throat area is ruled by the Lung, has everything to do with sound—pointing to the Kidney’s orifice of the ears. Around the 5th Century BC, it is believed that eclipses would take place in this constellation. This coming together of the Sun and the moon works as a symbol that points towards the ShaoYin relationship of the Kidney and Heart.

Neck (water spirit)

The neck, nicor, or nixie or nokken (German: Nixe; Dutch: nikker and Dutch: nekker, Norwegian: nøkk; Swedish: näck; Finnish: näkki) are shapeshifting water spirits in Germanic mythology and folklore who usually appeared in forms of other creatures.

Under a variety of names, they were common to the stories of all Germanic peoples, although they are perhaps best known from Scandinavian folklore. The related English knucker was generally depicted as a wyrm or dragon, although more recent versions depict the spirits in other forms. Their sex, bynames, and various transformations vary geographically. The German Nix and his Scandinavian counterparts were males. The German Nixe was a female river mermaid.

Names and etymology

The names are held to derive from Common Germanic *nikwus or *nikwis(i), derived from PIE *neig^w ("to wash"). They are related to Sanskrit nḗnēkti, Greek νίζω nízō and νίπτω níptō, and Irish nigh (all meaning to wash or be washed). The form neck appears in English and Swedish (näck or nek, meaning "nude"). The Swedish form is derived from Old Swedish neker, which corresponds to Old Icelandic nykr (gen. nykrs), and nykk in Norwegian Nynorsk. In Finnish, the word is näkki. In Old Danish, the form was nikke and in modern Danish and Norwegian Bokmål it is nøkk. The Icelandic nykur is a horselike creature. In Middle Low German, it was called necker and in Middle Dutch nicker (c.f. also Nickel or Nikkel plus Kobolt) . The Old High German form nihhus also meant "crocodile", while the Old English nicor could mean both a "water monster" and a "hippopotamus". The Norwegian Fossegrim and Swedish Strömkarlen are related figures sometimes seen as by-names for the same creature. The Scandinavian version can transform himself into a horse-like kelpie, and is called a Bäckahästen (the "brook horse"), whilst the Welsh version is called the Ceffyl Dŵr (the "water horse").

White and Black in chess

In chess, the player who moves first is referred to as "White" and the player who moves second is referred to as "Black". Similarly, the pieces that each conducts are called, respectively, "the white pieces" and "the black pieces". The pieces are often not literally white and black, but some other colors (usually a light color and a dark color, respectively). The 64 squares of the chessboard, which is colored in a checkered pattern, are likewise referred to as "white squares" or "light squares" on the one hand, and "black squares" or "dark squares" on the other. In most cases, the squares are not actually white and black, but a light color and a contrasting dark color. For example, the squares on plastic boards are often off-white ("buff") and green, while those on wood boards are often light brown and dark brown.

In old chess writings, the sides are often called Red and Black, because those were the two colors of ink then commonly available when hand-drawing or printing chess position diagrams.

Black (Lita Ford album)

Black is Lita Ford's sixth studio album and featured a change of style in her music, compared to her other albums. Black sees Ford move into other musical styles such as blues and grunge, while still maintaining her metal and rock roots. There would be a 14-year gap between Black and her next studio album, 2009's Wicked Wonderland.
