It's Always Sunny in the Dikke.
"The Big Apple" is a nickname for New York City. It was first popularized in the 1920s by John J. Fitz Gerald, a sports writer for the New York Morning Telegraph. Its popularity since the 1970s is due to a promotional campaign by the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau, known now as NYC & Company.
Although the history of the Big Apple was once thought a mystery, research over the past two decades, primarily by amateur etymologist Barry Popik and Gerald Cohen of Missouri University of Science and Technology, has provided a reasonably clear picture of the term's history. Previously, there were a number of false etymologies, including a claim that the term derived from a New York brothel whose madam was known as Eve. This was subsequently exposed as a hoax and has been replaced on the source web site with more accurate information.
The earliest citation for "big apple" is the 1909 book The Wayfarer in New York, by Edward Martin, writing: "Kansas is apt to see in New York a greedy city. . . . It inclines to think that the big apple gets a disproportionate share of the national sap" (emphasis added).William Safire considered this the coinage, but the Random House Dictionary of American Slang considers the usage "metaphorical or perhaps proverbial, rather than a concrete example of the later slang term", and Popik likewise does not consider this the coinage.

New York City, you're so big and tough
Well here we come, baby, struttin' our stuff
Well we look kinda freaky we're pretty damn bad
Cause Southern cookin' is all we've ever had
Oh, cook 'em up some greens, baby
I've seen the mountains up in Tennessee
Sweet little hill women satisfied me
We all know it's tough and it's an uphill battle
But we're running 'em hard baby, sitting in the saddle
Oh, come on baby
New York City you're so big and tough
My pistols are loaded, I feel rough
Well, we've heard of your punks and high heeled steppers
(VERSE 1)
See my face you know where I've been
Walking in jungle
Cruising down boulevard part of the race
Taking a tumble
(BRIDGE 1)
Loving a stranger
Is fearing from danger
Is crying in some avenue
And soon the hate will be there...
(VERSE 2)
Assassin with gun is taking his aim
To target his rival
And tossing the street is a dangerous game
The stakes are survival
(BRIDGE 2)
Love in that stranger
Still fearing that danger
Still crying in some avenue
And soon the hate will be there too
(CHORUS 1)
Life in the Big Apple moves very fast
And so must you
Do like the others do
And don't you drag your heels
Life in the Big Apple moves very fast...
(VERSE 3)
Cops on route are hot in pursuit
As windows are shattered
Café and arcade are teeming with loot
The sidewalks are scattered
(BRIDGE 3)
Walking down highways
Just seeing things my way
While dealer man enjoys his wealth
You spare the rope, he'll hang himself
(CHORUS 2)
Life in the Big Apple moves very fast
And so must you
Do like the others do
And don't you drag your heels
Life in the Big Apple moves very fast
And so must you
Do like the others do
And don't you drag your...
Drag your...
(FINAL CHORUS)
Life in the Big Apple moves very fast
And so must you
Do like the others do
And don't you drag your heels
See my face
you know where I've been walking in jungle
Cruising down boulevard part of the race taking a tumble.
Love in that stranger still fearing that danger
Still crying in some avenue and soon the hate will be there too.
Life in the big apple moves very fast and so must you
Do like the others do and don't you drag your heels.
Life in the big apple moves very fast.
Cops on route are hot in pursuit as windows are shattered.
Cafe and arcade are teeming with loot the sidewalks are scattered.
Walking down highways just seeing things my way
While dealer man enjoys his wealth you spare the rope he'll hang himself.
Life in the big apple moves very fast and so must you
. . .
Life in the big apple moves very fast and so must you
. . .
mc, remember the day you were hyped ?
in europe you heard the first dose of rhyme
it shivered your spine, the music was fine, I suppose
it made you presumptious - you can't come close to a cigar -
no superstar - 'cos you copy
make a cliche what they say in usa, mc
don't believe, rub your eyes a clear vision
you're lucky in your zone, no u.s. collision
now, make that decision to cross the ocean
rap your tracks - they smack, before you have a notion
'cos all originals gotta be original
make 'm say 'european style is typical'
no bites or snatches, big apple's a temple
now make your own, you know the example
big apple, it's only example
The rhyme spectre haunts like a corrector
my hate of imitating mc's - is the factor
you see, I walk around in my hometown
visit now and then clubs underground
see them walk around blowing their mouths off
they can't hang, so why hang around son ?
not learning, no progress 'bout the past
stuck with old skool, old wax, all that jazz
big apple, it's only example
Like me when I blast you're going on drugs
like designer-drugs - you get the best bang for the buck
now let me show you the big picture
you as an outsider get a mixture
of whack rhymes, over and over
you feel dizzy, yo ! here's an artist to make you sober
with strong rhymes made for succes
sometimes I stand alone, this time with a bandact
and I guess uds is fresh
'cos we don't mess with things they do in the us
