Dear True Love
I recently had the pleasure of asking for my girlfriend's hand in marriage. It was easily the happiest moment of my life, and I was able to document the proposal.
Here is the story:
At the beginning of this year, she planned to take a trip to Portland, OR after she graduated from college. She was going with her dad and sister to run a half-marathon, and backpack for a couple days after. She had invited me, but I didn't think I was going to be able to make it. (at least that is what I told her) So they bought their plane tickets and paid for their entrance to the race, and began planning their getaway.
In March, I met with Jenae's dad to ask for her hand in marriage. This was one of the scariest things I've ever done. So many times throughout our dinner meeting I thought he was going to say no, because he is a very hard person to read. But once I got his approval to marry his daughter, I shared with him my plan for wanting to fly out to Portland to surprise Jenae, and ask her to marry me. He loved the idea! He was so excited, and it made me all the more excited to be able to make this happen.
The Wednesday before we left, I went over to Jenae's parents house to give her dad a letter that he would give to wake her up early Saturday morning. The letter read, "Good Morning B, I hope you were woken up nicely. :) Today I want to take you on an adventure. Today is all about you. Be ready at 7 and dress warm."
She arrived in Portland on Friday (May 17) in the early afternoon, I would arrive at about 5pm. She had no idea that I was there. I arrived to my hotel and got settled in, went to Whole Foods, to grab some dinner and a couple things for the next day's festivities. I went to bed eager for the next day to begin.
I woke up at 5:45 and jumped in the shower. When I got out of the shower I received a text from Jenae. She was so surprised, she could not believe that it was real, and that I was really there. It was exactly the response that I wanted from her! I left my hotel and drove straight to her friends' house to pick her up.
She was extremely excited to see me when I walked through the door. She kept asking me, "What are you doing here?" And I just kept telling her that I was there to see her race. We drove about two hours outside of Portland to a lake called Lost Lake. It was so amazing! There was a little rain but nothing that would stop me from my plan. The plan was to go on a canoe ride on the water first. So we walked inside the lodge to rent a canoe, but by the time we came out, the rain was coming down very hard! But we were set on having an adventure, so we got in our canoe anyways. I pushed us out onto the water, and then noticed that the oars were behind us, but if we turned around we couldn't reach them. So we decided to trade canoes. I pulled us back in, and helped Jenae get out of the canoe. Unfortunately, it was coming down way harder than we anticipated, so we just decided to head back to the car.
We got in the car and tried to warm up. We were both sopping wet.
Plan B was to have us walk around the lake and find a spot where I could ask her to marry me. So I found a good hike where there would be covering from the rain because of the trees. We parked our car and set out to walk the trail around the lake.
I strapped my tripod to my Langly Camera Bag and told her it was because I wanted to get a picture of us next to the lake. We immediately found a nice spot right along the water that would be perfect to propose but I wanted to walk around for a bit. We walked for a little over an hour and then I said for us to go back to the first spot that we found right next to the water.
I set up my tripod and asked her if I could read her something. I read her a poem I wrote about the day that we first met. Then I threw my journal down and began to share my heart with her. But as luck would have it, right when I was getting ready to take out the ring, out of the corner of my eye, I saw some man canoeing on the water. I knew he was going to pass right next to us, so I stalled and began to share more of my heart. Once he passed, I then got down on one knee, and popped the question.
Her reaction was priceless. If I close my eyes I can still see her reaction in my mind. I hope you feel inspired to love and appreciate those closest to you by this story and by this video.

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, and featuring judges Harry Connick, Jr., Jennifer Lopez, and Keith Urban, along with in-house mentor Randy Jackson, the series empowers contestants and viewers to share their voices in deciding who will be America's next singing superstar. Every year, tens of thousands of hopefuls from across the nation audition for a shot at stardom. The show's judges will travel across the country including stops in Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Detroit, MI; Omaha, NE, Salt Lake City, UT; and San Francisco, CA, in search of the next AMERICAN IDOL. They narrow down the competitors to a select group of semifinalists who sing their hearts out each week in front of a studio audience and television viewers. The judges have their say after every performance, but it's the viewing public that determines who will advance to become a finalist and who will go home. Telephone, text message and online voting begin immediately after each live performance show, and the results are announced during the following night's live broadcast.
