I always viewed the phrase "life is unfair" as negative. It felt to me the glass is half empty; why try when you'll fail anyway; the good guy comes in last. I preferred the more positively-framed approach of believing anything is possible in life, especially when it comes to career success ... "I work much harder than he does ... In Buddhism, dukkha means the struggle to accept the fact that things in life are temporary, limited and imperfect....

Another factor is that, in general, Buddhism has been less concerned about what we eat than how we eat it, since our dukkha "suffering" is rooted in our craving -- and food is the second most popular example of human craving ... dukkha (suffering or "dis-ease"), impermanence, and not-self ... New technologies are not in themselves a problem, for the important issue is their effects on our dukkha....

My 25th reunion at Smith College was the saddest event I had ever attended. What really got to me was the open-mike time, when we shared news about our lives. It was a litany of sorrows and tragedies. broken marriages, special-needs children, breast cancer, failed careers, deaths of loved ones ... The Buddhists have a word, “dukkha,” which means suffering. But it means more than that. It means life. Life is suffering. We all suffer....
