At the time, he was still a graduate student at USC and was working as a projectionist. The old projector had an interlocked motor which, when idle, made a "wonderful humming sound." Ben Burtt, sound designer of the Star Wars films, details how he created the iconic sound of lightsabers in this vintage interview.
The lightsaber hum is one of Burtt's favorite sounds, he says. Inspired by Ralph McQuarrie's concept paintings featuring lightsabers, Burtt said he could "hear the sound in his head." At the time, he was still a graduate student at USC and was working as a projectionist. The old projector had an interlocked motor which, when idle, made a "wonderful humming sound." Burtt recorded it, and it became the basis of the lightsaber sound. But it wasn't enough -- he needed a buzzing sound, and he actually found it by accident. Walking by television set with a live microphone, the microphone picked up the transmission from the unit and produced a buzz. Burtt loved it, recorded it, and combined it with the projector motor, creating a new sound that became the basic lightsaber tone. To achieve the aural effect of a lightsaber moving, he played the hum out of a speaker and waved a microphone by it; doing so created the fascimile of a moving sound, and in this case, the sound of a Jedi or Sith wielding a weapon in battle. In this video, Burtt is seen using this technique to match the strikes in Luke Skywalker's duel with Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back.

WALL-E (stylized with an interpunct as WALL·E) is a 2008 American computer-animated science-fiction comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Andrew Stanton, the story follows a robot named WALL-E, who is designed to clean up an abandoned, waste-covered Earth far in the future. He falls in love with another robot named EVE, who also has a programmed task, and follows her into outer space on an adventure that changes the destiny of both his kind and humanity. Both robots exhibit an appearance of free will and emotions similar to humans, which develop further as the film progresses.
After directing Finding Nemo, Stanton felt Pixar had created believable simulations of underwater physics and was willing to direct a film set largely in space. WALL-E has minimal dialogue in its early sequences; many of the characters do not have voices, but instead communicate with body language and robotic sounds, which were designed by Ben Burtt. It is also Pixar's first animated feature with segments featuring live-action characters.
WALL-E was released in the United States and Canada on June 27, 2008. It grossed $23.2 million on its opening day, and $63.1 million during its opening weekend in 3,992 theaters, ranking number one at the box office. This ranks as the fifth highest-grossing opening weekend for a Pixar film. Following Pixar tradition, WALL-E was paired with a short film, Presto, for its theatrical release.
WALL-E was met with critical acclaim, scoring an approval rating of 96% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It grossed $521.3 million worldwide, won the 2008 Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, the 2009 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form, the final Nebula Award for Best Script,[4] the Saturn Award for Best Animated Film, and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature as well as being nominated for five other Academy Awards at the 81st Academy Awards. WALL-E ranks first in TIME 's "Best Movies of the Decade". The film is seen as a critique on larger societal issues. It addresses consumerism, corporatism, nostalgia, environmental problems, waste management, human impact on the environment, and risks to human civilization and the planet Earth.

Title : WALL·E (2008)
Release Date : 27 Jun 2008
Runtime : 98 min
Rated : G
Genre : Animation, Adventure, Family
Director : Andrew Stanton
Writer : Andrew Stanton (original story by), Pete Docter (original story by), Andrew Stanton (screenplay), Jim Reardon (screenplay)

Actors : Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin, Fred Willard
Synopsis : In a distant, but not so unrealistic, future where mankind has abandoned earth because it has become covered with trash from products sold by the powerful multi-national Buy N Large corporation, WALL-E, a garbage collecting robot has been left to clean up the mess. Mesmerized with trinkets of Earth's history and show tunes, WALL-E is alone on Earth except for a sprightly pet cockroach. One day, EVE, a sleek (and dangerous) reconnaissance robot, is sent to Earth to find proof that life is once again sustainable. WALL-E falls in love with EVE. WALL-E rescues EVE from a dust storm and shows her a living plant he found amongst the rubble. Consistent with her "directive", EVE takes the plant and automatically enters a deactivated state except for a blinking green beacon. WALL-E, doesn't understand what has happened to his new friend, but, true to his love, he protects her from wind, rain, and lightning, even as she is unresponsive. One day a massive ship comes to reclaim EVE, but WALL-E, out of love or loneliness, hitches a ride on the outside of the ship to rescue EVE. The ship arrives back at a large space cruise ship, which is carrying all of the humans who evacuated Earth 700 years earlier. The people of Earth ride around this space resort on hovering chairs which give them a constant feed of TV and video chatting. They drink all of their meals through a straw out of laziness and/or bone loss, and are all so fat that they can barely move. When the auto-pilot computer, acting on hastily-given instructions sent many centuries before, tries to prevent the people of Earth from returning by stealing the plant, WALL-E, EVE, the portly captain, and a band of broken robots stage a mutiny.

"SP FX: The Empire Strikes Back" was a television documentary special which originally aired on CBS on September 22, 1980 in the United States.
Hosted by actor Mark Hamill, it is a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the special effects (SP FX) in the second Star Wars film, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, which was released that year. The special was written by Richard Schickel and directed by Robert Guenette, who had both previously worked on the 1977 special The Making of Star Wars.
The special was hosted by Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy. It features behind-the-scenes footage from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and shows the making of various special effects sequences including the Imperial probe droid, the Tauntaun and Wampa ice creatures of the planet Hoth, the battle between the Imperial AT-AT Walkers and the Rebel Snowspeeders, the asteroid field sequence, the lightsaber duel between Luke and Darth Vader, and the Dagobah scenes and creation of the character Yoda which was voiced and performed by Frank Oz.
It includes brief interviews with actor Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and sound designer Ben Burtt, and footage of various key crewmembers at work including director Irvin Kershner, composer John Williams, assistant director Bill Westley, special effects personnel Richard Edlund, Dennis Muren, and Brian Johnson, matte artist Harrison Ellenshaw, and creature designer Stuart Freeborn.
As well as showing how effects from Empire were made, the documentary reflects on the history of special effects in movies and includes clips from landmark effects films such as The Lost World, King Kong, Flash Gordon, Things To Come, The Thief of Baghdad, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, Them!, Mary Poppins, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Hindenburg, the first Star Wars film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Black Hole.
In the wake of the then-new revolution in special effects pioneered by 2001 and Star Wars, it also shows clips from several amateur special effects films including the Star Wars parody Hardware Wars, in which kitchen items such as whisks, toasters and irons engaged in a space battle in lieu of spaceships. A section devoted to several grade school children making their own rudimentary special effects was also shown.
This was pulled directly from the VHS tape I used to record the documentary 34 years ago, so please excuse the less-than-polished look of the video. I hope you enjoy it as it's one of few documentaries made on the original Empire Strikes Back film before George Lucas re-edited it years later.

THE LIST
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Director: Steven Spielberg
Sound Designer: Gary Rydstrom
The soundscape of the landing at Normandy is epic and personal in turns, thanks in large part to the soundscape the audience is immersed in.
Das Boot (1981)
Director: Wolfgang Petersen
Sound Design By: Milan Bor, Trevor Pyke, Mike la Mare
So much of the sound that creates the claustrophobic atmosphere of the German submarine had to be-recreated in post by master artists who worked on this film.
M (1931)
Director: Fritz Lang
Sound Design: Fritz Lang
One of the earliest “talkies” M had the opportunity to be truly experimental in its sound design… and the results are amazing.
Stalker (1979)
Director: Andrei Tarkovsky
Stalker paints its bizarre landscape with sound every bit as much as it does with image.
A Man Escaped
Director: Rober Bresson
Thanks to the focused minimalism of sound, we feel the prisoner’s anxiety about being dissevered as much as he does.
Gravity (2013)
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Sound Design By: Glenn Freemantle
There is no sound in space, but there is vibration - Because the sound effects are so limited in Gravity, the audience forced to feel the same isolation and urgency as the characters.
Star Wars (1977)
Director: George Lucas
Sound Design By: Ben Burtt
Ben Burtt’s creative use of real-world sounds to populate a sci-fi/fantasy universe gives this classic film that right combination of fantastic and familiar.
Wall-E (2008)
Director: Andrew Stanton
Sound (and voices) By: Ben Burtt
Ben Burrt returns to the sci-fi world to create all the sounds that made Wall-E so charming, the abandoned Earth so desolate, and the futuristic space ship so… futuristic.
Eraserhead (1977)
Director: David Lynch
Sound By: Alan Splet
The torturous industrialized environment of Eraserhead pretty much wouldn’t exist without the sound to pull it off.
The Conversation (1974)
Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Sound Design By: Walter Murch
Halfway through this story about a paranoid surveillance technician, traditional dialogue drops away, forcing us to live in the same soundscape as Harry Caul.

Ben Burtt Interview: The Sound of Lightsabers
Ben Burtt Interview: The Sound of Lightsabers
Ben Burtt, sound designer of the Star Wars films, details how he created the iconic sound of lightsabers in this vintage interview.

The Sounds of Star Wars
The Sounds of Star Wars
In 1977, with the release of Star Wars: A New Hope, Ben Burtt introduced a new lexicon of sounds into our aural vocabulary.
This video is a celebration of those iconic sounds that have been rattling around my head since childhood and that have since become ingrained in our collective pop culture psyche.
It is also a celebration of Ben Burtt's genius.
Sound design by Ben Burtt.

Top 10 Best Sound Designed Films of All Time
Top 10 Best Sound Designed Films of All Time
Everyone can appreciate a film’s visuals, but good sound are (at least) half the artistry of a movie. Today we pay tribute to some of the best Sound Design out there. Subscribe: http://goo.gl/9AGRm
From explosions in pitched battle to the judicious use of silence; from Foley effects to fully immersive soundscapes, what you hear in movies shapes the experience of watching them in ways you may not even consciously realize at the time. And these 10 movies illustrate that fact wonderfully.
What do you think of the list? What movie do you think of has having great sound? Do you think we left anything off the list, or put something undeserving on? Did we make you think more about what you hear at the movies, as much as what you see? What other topics would you like to see us cover in future CineFix movie lists?
Let us know in the comments!
THE LIST
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Director: Steven Spielberg
Sound Designer: Gary Rydstrom
The soundscape of the landing at Normandy is epic and personal in turns, thanks in large part to the soundscape the audience is immersed in.
Das Boot (1981)
Director: Wolfgang Petersen
Sound Design By: Milan Bor, Trevor Pyke, Mike la Mare
So much of the sound that creates the claustrophobic atmosphere of the German submarine had to be-recreated in post by master artists who worked on this film.
M (1931)
Director: Fritz Lang
Sound Design: Fritz Lang
One of the earliest “talkies” M had the opportunity to be truly experimental in its sound design… and the results are amazing.
Stalker (1979)
Director: Andrei Tarkovsky
Stalker paints its bizarre landscape with sound every bit as much as it does with image.
A Man Escaped
Director: Rober Bresson
Thanks to the focused minimalism of sound, we feel the prisoner’s anxiety about being dissevered as much as he does.
Gravity (2013)
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Sound Design By: Glenn Freemantle
There is no sound in space, but there is vibration - Because the sound effects are so limited in Gravity, the audience forced to feel the same isolation and urgency as the characters.
Star Wars (1977)
Director: George Lucas
Sound Design By: Ben Burtt
Ben Burtt’s creative use of real-world sounds to populate a sci-fi/fantasy universe gives this classic film that right combination of fantastic and familiar.
Wall-E (2008)
Director: Andrew Stanton
Sound (and voices) By: Ben Burtt
Ben Burrt returns to the sci-fi world to create all the sounds that made Wall-E so charming, the abandoned Earth so desolate, and the futuristic space ship so… futuristic.
Eraserhead (1977)
Director: David Lynch
Sound By: Alan Splet
The torturous industrialized environment of Eraserhead pretty much wouldn’t exist without the sound to pull it off.
The Conversation (1974)
Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Sound Design By: Walter Murch
Halfway through this story about a paranoid surveillance technician, traditional dialogue drops away, forcing us to live in the same soundscape as Harry Caul.

Podrace Lap One - Animatics Split Screen - The Phantom Menace
To create the podrace animatic, co-editor Ben Burtt combined footage from a variety of sources, including computer-generated animatics, a Sebulba hand puppet acted by concept sculptor Robert Barnes, and temporary shots of Ben's son, Benny Burtt, as Anakin Skywalker. These elements are included in the animatics window of the following storyboards-animatics-film breakdown.
