Barry Adamson (born 11 June 1958, Moss Side, Manchester) is a British rock musician who has worked with rock bands such as Magazine, Visage, The Birthday Party, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and the electronic musicians Pan sonic. Adamson has also remixed Grinderman, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Depeche Mode. He created the seven-minute opus "Useless (Escape From Wherever: Pts. 1 & 2)" remix for the latter band in 1997. He has also worked on the soundtrack for David Lynch's Lost Highway, and released numerous solo recordings.
He read comic books from an early age. In school he absorbed himself in art, music and film, writing his first song, "Brain Pain", at the age of 10. His musical influences were diverse, ranging from Alice Cooper to Motown to David Bowie.
Adamson left school and shifted into graphic design attending Stockport Art College but quit shortly after, favouring to venture into the exploding punk rock scene of the late 1970s. He joined ex-Buzzcocks singer Howard Devoto's band Magazine, playing bass guitar, scoring one chart single, "Shot by Both Sides"; in late 1977, he also joined Buzzcocks, as a short-time replacement of Garth Smith. He played on all of Magazine's albums, and contributed to Devoto's solo album and his next band, Luxuria. He also contributed to the studio-based band Visage, playing on the ensemble's first two albums, Visage and The Anvil.
"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.
Nicholas Edward "Nick" Cave (born 22 September 1957) is an Australian musician, songwriter, author, screenwriter, composer and occasional film actor.
He is best known for his work as a frontman of the critically acclaimed rock band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, established in 1983, a group known for its eclectic influences and musical styles. Before that, he had fronted the group The Birthday Party in the early 1980s, a band renowned for its highly gothic, challenging lyrics and violent sound influenced by free jazz, blues, and post-punk. In 2006, he formed the garage rock band Grinderman that released its debut the following year. Cave's music is generally characterised by emotional intensity, a wide variety of influences and lyrical obsessions with religion, death, love and violence.
Upon Cave's induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame, ARIA Awards committee chairman Ed St John said, “Nick Cave has enjoyed—and continues to enjoy—one of the most extraordinary careers in the annals of popular music. He is an Australian artist like Sidney Nolan is an Australian artist—beyond comparison, beyond genre, beyond dispute."
Anita Lane is an Australian singer-songwriter who directly influenced the early 1980s European post-punk landscape.
Lane was born in Melbourne, Australia in the late 1950s. Lane began singing and writing songs at age 16. She was a classmate with Rowland S. Howard who would later form The Boys Next Door and The Birthday Party with Nick Cave. Lane became Cave's girlfriend and moved to London with the band in 1980. She co-wrote the lyrics of three songs for The Birthday Party ("Dead Joe", "Kiss Me Black" and "A Dead Song") before they split up in 1983.
Lane is sometimes credited[by whom?] as a founding member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, which was forged from the debris left behind by The Birthday Party's demise. She had an undeniably strong influence upon Nick Cave and his work[citation needed], often cited as his "muse"[citation needed], although her only recorded performance with the band is a verse on the Bob Dylan cover "Death Is Not The End" from the much later recorded album Murder Ballads in 1996[citation needed]. Lane and Cave duet on a cover of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's "Bedazzled" on the B-side of her 1995 single, The World's a Girl. She co-wrote the lyrics of the title track to the band's 1984 LP, From Her to Eternity, as well as the lyrics of the song "Stranger Than Kindness" from Your Funeral, My Trial. She also began to perform and record her own songs. She worked with the German band Die Haut before recording Dirty Pearl under her own name. She was joined on the record by Nick Cave, and Bad Seeds Barry Adamson, Thomas Wydler, and Mick Harvey, who produced.
Nancy Sandra Sinatra (born June 8, 1940) is an American singer and actress. She is the daughter of singer/actor Frank Sinatra, and remains best known for her 1966 signature hit "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'".
Other defining recordings include "Sugar Town", the 1967 number one "Somethin' Stupid" (a duet with her father), the title song from the James Bond film You Only Live Twice, several collaborations with Lee Hazlewood such as "Jackson", and her cover of Cher's "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", which features during the opening sequence of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill.
Sinatra began her career as a singer and actress in the early 1960s, but initially achieved success only in Europe and Japan. In early 1966 she had a transatlantic number-one hit with "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'", which showed her provocative but good-natured style, and which popularized and made her synonymous with go-go boots. The promo clip featured a big-haired Sinatra and six young women in tight tops, go-go boots and mini-skirts. The song was written by Lee Hazlewood, who wrote and produced most of her hits and sang with her on several duets, including the critical and cult favorite "Some Velvet Morning". In 1966 and 1967, Sinatra charted with 13 titles, all of which featured Billy Strange as arranger and conductor.
Spoken words:
"Everything I tell you today I'm gonna show you it in black and white. I'm wanted for murder, kidnapping, robbery, armed robbery, conspiracy, threatening New York."
"You have nothing to worry about, Mr Adamson."
"You have nothing to worry about, Mr Adamson."
"You have nothing to worry about, Mr Adamson."
"You have nothing to worry about, Mr Adamson."
I feel good. I feel bad. Ain't it sad
One day it's all going to end
Up in flames. Without a shame
Cos I'm here. To change the total
course of the world (yeah yeah)
And that's what I'm singing (yeah yeah)
Heat it up. Cool it down
Spread it around under the cold
shadow of love. I have found (I have found)
What it means (what it means). To believe (to believe)
And leave the world to the remains
Of the day (of the day). What I say (what I say). Ain't so clear (ain't so clear)
To souls who die when the decline
Can't be seen (can't be seen). They're getting mean (they're getting mean)
Now we're going (now we're going)
To change the total course
(chorus)
Here am I.
Love just spilled on what comes naturally.
Buy and bye
Love just spills and I don't mean rationally
What it means. Is you're dead
One to the head. If you don't know
what is behind. This disguise.
It's no surprise. When you think
About your own every step of the way
The energy pirates will get you
They'll chew on your bones for breakfast
They'll convince you that baby you're desperate
They'll spit on your mound and keep pounding and pounding and
(repeat chorus)
All the time. Love just comes and I
don't mean casually. Wait a while
Love will come and fuck that tragedy
(Cancel that shrink we're travelling up
to the sky minds on the blink
Or maybe the lies. Out of time)
I have found. What it means. To believe
That what is all going to end
Up in flames. Is your heart
So let it speak. And change the total
Once upon a time a very handsome prince was walking along Dead Man's Trail. Morning had just about broken and the wings of tiny birds cut through the rays of the sun, casting slithering shadows as they went about their pleasure. The handsome prince was preparing to engage in this splendour, when all of a sudden he noticed a beautiful and quite voluptuous maiden travelling towards him in slow motion. "Oh my god," thought the handsome prince with shameful excitement, "she's incredible and so very… stimulating."
As the beautiful maiden approached him, he gathered all of his resources, plucked up courage, and gave her one of his special curtseys that would hopefully see him in with a chance, when he realised she was very tearful if not completely crushed. The handsome prince swallowed a wave of guilt as the beautiful maiden now openly stood before him, sobbing her heart out. Realising something was terribly wrong, the handsome prince put all of his hang-ups on the shelf and asked: "What are you so inconceivably sad about if I may be so bold to enquire?" The beautiful maiden gave a big sigh, which seemed to last a lifetime, as the handsome prince sat on the edge of his metaphorical seat in preparation for her answer. She announced: "I've just seen my therapist, who's convinced I have a borderline personality disorder with narcissistic traits, which means I'll be unhappy all my life as nobody will be able to measure up to the fantastically high standards that I just can't help but impose on them."
Ok, what have we got here
Horny black boy with frisky white girl
Eye each other across the room and
The chemistry is unbearable and
Definitely not on anyones agenda
He suggests they go to someplace they won't be seen
And she thinks otherwise
Finally they agree to go
And put up with Dunkin donuts
The usual story, they fall in love
Under the hail of spit they ignore
All the while secretly conspiring to murder each other
Hoping that will eleviate the slightly more
Uncomfortable feelings that may arise
in a situation like this
But behind closed doors
The eyes of the world
becoming their wallpaper
They melt into a beautiful example
of a power that definitely exists
And come together on a warm moonlit night
In spite of themselves
Our time is done my love
We've laid it all to waste
One thousand moonlit kisses
can't sweeten this bitter taste
My desire for you is endless
and I'll love you 'till we fall
I just don't want you no more
and that's the sweetest embrace of all
To think we can find happiness
hidden in a kiss
Ah, to think we can find happiness
that's the greatest mistake there is
There is nothing left to cling to babe
There is nothing left to soil
I just don't want you no more
and that's the sweetest embrace of all
Ooohhh where did it begin
When all we did was lose
There's nothin' left to win
So lay your weapons down
they serve no purpose in your hands
And if you wanna hold me
then go ahead and hold me
I won't upset your plans
If it's revenge you want
then take it babe
Or you can walk right out the door
I just don't want you anymore
And that's the sweetest embrace of all
Ooohhh where did it begin
When all we did was lose
There's nothin' left to win
It's over babe
And it really is a shame
We are losers you and me babe
In a rigged and crooked game
My desire for you is endless
And I love you most of all
I just don't want you no more
(save me from my own hand)
Oooohhh, set the controls for the heart of the pelvis
Haven't you heard my name rhymes with elvis
And one thing I know is this
That your mouth is telling me to give you
A big kiss
(now my guard's down)
(save me from my own hand)
Ahhhh, can't you see what's an offer
Yeah babe it's going cheap today
I enter a room and all the girls say
C'mon jarv, can I be the first?
Oh you make us so hot we feel we're gonna burst
(now my guard's down)
Oh yeah...
So please, so please
Don't leave me alone in this double bed
It smells of damp towels and asthma inhalers
Say you're gonna call back later
Save me from these glossy photographs
Save me from my mother's laugh
Save me
(now my guard's down)
That's right girls
That's right girls
Save me from my own hand
Do you know how much
I want you?
i'm looking to love somebody
i don't mean to anybody
i'm looking to love somebody right now
he's on the trees are falling
the devil in me is callin
i'm looking to love somebody right now
so when you see me
the all broken down
your beat disgusting starting rumor
will be forgotten
when i kutch you down to size my eyes
the end of the day has started
reason to me just party
looking to love somebody right now
now the wheels are turning
you're going to the fire is burning
i'm looking to love somebody right now
so when you see me
down on badly nee
you'd be disgusted starting rumor
to be forgotten when i cut you down
to size my sad beautiful eyes
i'm looking to love somebody
i don't mean to anybody
i'm looking to love somebody right now
he's on the trees are falling
the devil in me is callin
i'm looking to love somebody right now
i'm looking to love somebody
looking to love somebody
looking to love somebody right now
looking to love somebody
looking to love somebody
When god appeared before me
I was drowning in my pool
I was 50 over 30
But looking real cool
He said a life of tedious insights
And an overflowing cup
Just don't cut the mustard
I'm afraid you can't come up
I fell way down it seemed
Into a bottomless pit
A sign saying Hotel Hades
Was the only thing a'lit
Beezelbub was hanging
But he wouldn't cut no slack
He told me the Big Cat has spoken
I'm afraid you're going back
As the Jazz Devil
Full and greedy
I'm the Jazz Devil
Libido needy
I'm the Jazz Devil
Flymeat in the mix
Where you can call me Agent Double O 666
I cruised the streets of London
With one thing on my mind
Got a passport labelled fun
Of the interactive kind
But first I found some cats
And they were howling at the moon
I told them "You play the instruments
And I'll play the baffoon"
We broke into a sombre march
Called Misery and Woe
And then we upped the tempo
Until the juice began to flow
All a sudden this chick called Mimi
Appeared right out the blue
Saying "I've been searching for someone
And now I know who"
Jazz Devil
Sick and racy
I'm the Jazz Devil
But very tasty
I'm the Jazz Devil
Flymeat in the mix
Where you can call me Agent Double O 666
Me and Mimi settled down
In the family kinda way
Won 10 million on the lottery
Without no debts to pay
And in the wee small hours
When there was noplace left to spend
We'd open up each other
So the days would never end
Some jealous cats caught wind of this
And armed up to the teeth
They came in search of me and she
With pistols underneath
And they caught me going down
A thing that made me just see red
And as Mimi hit the no return
They filled me full of lead
Damn I'm dead
When god appeared before me
I was lying in a pool
I was 50 over 30
But looking real cool
He said a life of tedious insights
And a tendency to crack
Just don't cut the mustard
Time to head on back
I fell way down I knew
Into a bottomless pit
(Oh no here we go)
A sign saying Hotel Hades
Was the only thing a'lit
Beezelbub was there a'hanging
But he wouldn't cut no slack
He told me the Big Cat has spoken
Again you're going back
As the Jazz Devil
Every moment hail the
Jazz Devil
As long as days keep dawning
I'm the Jazz Devil
Flymeat in the mix
[Dwight McClusky:] "I'll tell ya something, Scagnetti, in all of my days in the penal business, and that ain't no small amount of days, right boys?" [Kavanaugh:] "Oh, no." [Wurlitzer:] "Nope." [Dwight McClusky:] "Mickey and Mallory Knox are without a doubt the most twisted, depraved pair of shit fucked that has ever been my displeasure to lay my goddamn eyes on. I'm tellin' you, these two motherfuckers are a walkin' reminder of just how fucked up the system really is." [Jack Scagnetti:] "Don't get me started, okay, warden? Don't get me started." [Dwight McClusky:] "Dwight, you call me Dwight."
[Jack Scagnetti:] "They've killed a shitload of inmates and guards." [Dwight McClusky:] "Three inmates, five guards and one shrink all in one year's time... Open that goddamn gate!" [Prison Guard:] "Yes, sir." [Jack Scagnetti:] "What, a psychiatrist?" [Dwight McClusky:] "Yeah, Mickey's better half, Miss Mallory, strangled his ass when he made the dumb-ass mistake to ask her what her parents were like, and she done it all shut up on tranquilizers too." [Jack Scagnetti:] "Oh..."
[Dwight McClusky:] "Ain't love grand? If that doesn't tell the truth. Listen, I got another dead lie: love makes the world go around." [Black Inmate:] "Hey, I need to talk to you 'bout..." [Dwight McClusky:] "How did a fellow like you get to be a specialist in psychos anyway?" [Jack Scagnetti:] "Well, actually, Dwight, I'd recommend having your mother killed by one. After that happened I developed a rather keen interest in the subject, you know?" [Dwight McClusky:] "What happened?" [Jack Scagnetti:] "When I was born I spend the first part of my life in Texas." [Dwight McClusky:] "Oh, that's funny, you don't have an accent." [Jack Scagnetti:] "Nah, I don't wanna talk like those assholes." [Dwight McClusky:] "Well, my, my mother was from Texas." [Jack Scagnetti:] "I meant those other assholes, you know, who used to beat the shit out of me. Anyway, one day, when I was 8 years old, my mother... my mother... I wanted to play in the park. And it just so happened to be the same day Charles Whitman had climbed to the top of the University Texas Tower and started shooting strangers." [Dwight McClusky:] "And you was with her." [Jack Scagnetti:] "Sure was. You see, the thing is, Dwight, I didn't hear any shots. I didn't hear any of 'em. And one minute I'm walking with my mother when all of a sudden... Chest explodes. She hits the ground, right? I'm just lookin' at her, her forearm flies off, her hip explodes and... Now, I'm not hearing any of these shots, right? BOOM! Chest explodes! Right?"
You see, that's the way the world is
Not a lot you can do about it
Except to accept
There was a time I thought about it
Plenty of time I thought about it
Then decided not to
Here in the hole; I'm surrounded by fools
Degenerates and phonies
I suffer a constant bombardment of nonesence from all sides
When central control rendered me (?) to requirements
My imprinters relocated to the ruins of Paris, where I regenerate
My new face accepting me immediately without the usual problems
I operate a program of self denial
Yet languish in polymorphous perversity as is my want
Each day, although I believe I'm free;
Something pulls me back into a past made real only by their understanding
And all the while the calls come in, and keep coming in (and keep coming and keep coming...)
And still;
I'm hunted for my flesh
I'm hounded for my beauty
In a world turned on its head
I steady myself, ready to enter (ready to enter)
They believe I know everything, but if my master's memory serves me well
In fact I know nothing
And so they will find me;
And in the middle of a cold afternoon, they will ask:
"What is it exactly that you know?" (exactly exactly exactly...)
And then, they will take me outside
And they will kill me
Libertine the name that falls from her lips and splashes on my shoes like sad beads of rain, penetrating the soil and making ready the harvest of our love.
And me?
I got a bug to squash
This tale's been told a thousand times, so I thought that I shoulda known better
Than to supplicate a girl, on pedestal shoes
No pants and a real tight sweater
I'm laughin' too!
But it's from my embarrassment that I tremble
When she saw that I was just a hopeless imitation of the man that I most resemble
And the chords ring so familiar, to a man who's heard it all before
And the melody will forever linger, like perfume in a hardware store
It ain't that I seek loneliness …
I just down right fail to understand
How a customary girl, on pedestal shoes
Can all but destroy one man
I wish I'd licked her to the ground
But I swallowed my tongue instead
Watched her from the shadows with a hideous frozen grin
While she carved her name in my head
Some folks talk ‘round the way,
sayin', “B, you really got it made.”
But I crawl ‘round my room from night ‘till day
Wonderin' if your star will ever fade
And I'll be here, come hell or high water
Love you like you're my daughter
Buy you new shoes ‘cause I oughta
And only sometimes will my thoughts turn blue, like the skies
And every word is you
(Instrumental)
Now,
West of Bloody 16th street,
Are the remains of a man who was broken
By the rapture of a girl, on pedestal shoes
And man I tell ya,
That girl wasn't jokin'
And I've killed my mind a thousand times
Now my thoughts stay firmly in the present
But there's a kinda ugly breach, like a ocean in my soul
Keeps on naggin' me - so incessant
And the silence is louder than a H-Bomb
That explodes when I close my eyes
Sendin' shockwaves to the town you're from
In the hope that you'll stir - come alive
And I'll be here, come hell or high water
Love you like you're my daughter
Buy you new shoes ‘cause I oughta
And only sometimes will my thoughts turn blue, like the skies
And every word is you
Like the skies
And every word is you
Like the skies
And every word is you
Like the skies
I see myself, but don't see me
Two burning eyes that don't agree
While in the shades there's someone
Following my every little movement from the score
I call a friend, who's never there
Too tired for love, too tired to care
While in the shade there's someone
Ridiculing every little moment I adore
I fold and fall down on a knee
And ask a God that I can't see
If maybe He or She will call on me
The days they pass with no relief
My head all swollen up with grief
Then somethin' awaketh me from sleep
I can't get loose to using you, but that's what I'm a gonna do
Havin' fun in heaven while you're crucified
I can't get loose to using you, but that's what I'm a gonna do
Watching Lillie's flower while your hands are tied
Did you just hear what I just heard
Or have I simply gone beserk
Cos in the shades there's someone
Laughing at my whimsical intentions to be free
Two burning minds that don't agree
One, praying, hoping desperately
While in the shade there's someone
Wallowing in what I know will never happen now
I crash and fall down on my knee
And beg a God that I can't see
If maybe He or She will call on me
The days just pass with no relief
My head all swollen up with grief
Then somethin' awaketh me from sleep
I can't get loose to using you, but that's what I'm a gonna do
Havin' fun in heaven while you're crucified
I can't get loose to using you, but that's what I'm a gonna do
Do you believe in the valley of dolls
Were you achieved in the valley of dolls
Born from porn we'll weather the storm
Take the little black bull by the sacred horn
Achieved in the valley of dolls
Were you conceived in the valley of dolls
Haven't seen you since
Were you there at all
Were your locks shorn in the temple above
Did you lose yourself with a siren of love
Deceived in the valley of dolls
Achieved in the valley of dolls
Believed in the valley of dolls
Conceived in the valley of dolls
