Plot
While growing up in the Great Depression era, Johnny Cash takes an interest in music and eventually moves out of his Arkansas town to join the air force in Germany. While there, he buys his first guitar and writes his own music, and proposes to Vivian. When they got married, they settled in Tennessee and with a daughter, he supported the family by being a salesman. He discovers a man who can pursue his dreams and ends up getting a record with the boys. Shortly after that, he was on a short tour, promoting his songs, and meets the already famous and beautiful June Carter. Then as they get on the long-term tours with June, the boys, and Jerry Lee Lewis, they have this unspoken relationship that grows. But when June leaves the tour because of his behavior, he was a drug addict. His marriage was also falling apart, and when he sees June years later at an awards show, he forces June to tour with them again, promising June to support her two kids and herself. While the tour goes on, the relationship between June and John grow more, and his marriage to his first wife ends. June finds out about the drugs, and help him overcome it. True love and care helped John eventually stop the drug usage, and finally proposes to her in front of an audience at a show.

Love is a burning thing.
Jerry Lee Lewis: We're all going to hell for the songs we sing!::June Carter: And what about me, Jerry Lee; am I going to hell too?::Jerry Lee Lewis: No, June, you're beautiful.::Jerry Lee Lewis: [Later] She's making me fall in love with her.
Johnny Cash: WE SURRENDER! WE SURRENDER!::June Carter: Y'all can't walk no line!
Johnny Cash: Now I've asked you forty different ways and it's time you come up with a fresh answer.
Luther Perkins: That boy Elvis sure talks a lot of poon.
June Carter: [on stage w/John] We've got these people all revved up, John. Now c'mon, let's sing Jackson for 'em.::Johnny Cash: You've got me all revved up. Now I've asked you forty different ways and it's time you come up with a fresh answer.::June Carter: Please sing.::Johnny Cash: I'm asking you to marry me. I love you, June. Now I know I said and done a lotta things, that I hurt you, but I promise, I'll never do that again. I only want to take care of you. I will not leave you like that dutch boy with your finger in the dam.::June Carter: [shakes head]::Johnny Cash: You're my best friend. Marry me.::June Carter: [quietly] All right.::Johnny Cash: Yeah?::[They kiss & the crowd cheers]
Johnny Cash: You got a library in there June.
Johnny Cash: You know what your problem is, June Carter? You are afraid to be in love, you are afraid of losing control, And you know what June Carter, I think you are afraid of livin' in my big fat shadow.::June Carter: Oh really? Is that what my problem is?::Johnny Cash: Yes.::June Carter: My problem is that it's 2 A.M. My problem is I'm asleep. I'm on a tour bus with eight stinkin' men. Rule number one: Don't propose to a girl on a bus, you got that? Rule number two: Don't tell her it's because you had a bad dream.::Johnny Cash: June.::June Carter: What?::Johnny Cash: Marry me.::[June glares]::Johnny Cash: Ok... Ok fine... but that's the last time i'm asking...::June Carter: Well, good. I hate reruns.
[after record producer Sam Phillips stops Cash's band a couple of verses into their audition]::Sam Phillips: You know exactly what I'm telling you. We've already heard that song a hundred times. Just like that. Just... like... how... you... sing it.::Johnny Cash: Well you didn't let us bring it home.::Sam Phillips: Bring... bring it home? All right, let's bring it home. If you was hit by a truck and you was lying out there in that gutter dying, and you had time to sing *one* song. Huh? One song that people would remember before you're dirt. One song that would let God know how you felt about your time here on Earth. One song that would sum you up. You tellin' me that's the song you'd sing? That same Jimmy Davis tune we hear on the radio all day, about your peace within, and how it's real, and how you're gonna shout it? Or... would you sing somethin' different. Somethin' real. Somethin' *you* felt. Cause I'm telling you right now, that's the kind of song people want to hear. That's the kind of song that truly saves people. It ain't got nothin to do with believin' in God, Mr. Cash. It has to do with believin' in yourself.::Johnny Cash: [after a pause] I got a couple of songs I wrote in the Air Force. You got anything against the Air Force?::Sam Phillips: No.::Johnny Cash: I do.
[first lines]::Warden: M-Mr. Cash? M-Mr. Cash?
Johnny Cash: It's funny, you know, because I haven't talked about Jack in a long time. After he passed I talked about him all the time. But I guess people grew tired of it... so I just stopped.

Rosanne Cash (born May 24, 1955) is an American singer-songwriter and author. She is the eldest daughter of country music icon Johnny Cash and his first wife, Vivian Liberto Cash Distin.
Although Cash is often classified as a country artist, her music draws on many genres, including folk, pop, rock and blues. In the 1980s, she had a string of chart-topping singles, which crossed musical genres and landed on both C&W and Top 100 charts, the most commercially successful being her 1981 breakthrough hit "Seven Year Ache", which topped the U.S. country singles charts and reached the Top 30 on the U.S. pop singles charts. In 1990, Cash released Interiors, a spare, introspective album which signaled a break from her pop country past. The following year Cash ended her marriage and moved from Nashville to New York City, where she continues to write, record and perform. Since 1991 she has released five albums, written two books and edited a collection of short stories. Her fiction and essays have been published in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Oxford-American, New York Magazine, and various other periodicals and collections.
David Michael Letterman (born April 12, 1947) is an American television host and comedian. He hosts the late night television talk show, Late Show with David Letterman, broadcast on CBS. Letterman has been a fixture on late night television since the 1982 debut of Late Night with David Letterman on NBC. Letterman recently surpassed friend and mentor Johnny Carson for having the longest late-night hosting career in the United States of America.
Letterman is also a television and film producer. His company Worldwide Pants produces his show as well as its network follow-up The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Worldwide Pants has also produced several prime-time comedies, the most successful of which was Everybody Loves Raymond, currently in syndication.
In 1996, David Letterman was ranked #45 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time.
Letterman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. His father, Harry Joseph Letterman (April 1915 – February 1973), was a florist of British descent; his mother Dorothy Letterman (née Hofert, now Dorothy Mengering), a Presbyterian church secretary of German descent, is an occasional figure on the show, usually at holidays and birthdays.
John R. "Johnny" Cash (February 26, 1932 – September 12, 2003), was an American singer-songwriter, actor, and author, who has been called one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Although he is primarily remembered as a country music icon, his songs and sound spanned many other genres including rockabilly and rock and roll—especially early in his career—as well as blues, folk, and gospel. This crossover appeal led to Cash being inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
Cash was known for his deep, distinctive bass-baritone voice; for the "boom-chicka-boom" sound of his Tennessee Three backing band; for his rebelliousness, coupled with an increasingly somber and humble demeanor; for providing free concerts inside prison walls; and for his dark performance clothing, which earned him the nickname "The Man in Black". He traditionally started his concerts by saying, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash." and usually following it up with his standard "Folsom Prison Blues".
Shawn Colvin (b. January 10, 1956) is an American singer-songwriter and musician.
Colvin was born in Vermillion, South Dakota and spent her youth in London, Ontario and Carbondale, Illinois. She learned to play guitar at the age of 10 and grew listening to her father's collection of music, which included artists such as Peter Seeger and the Kingston Trio.
Colvin moved to Austin, Texas and joined a Western swing band called the Dixie Diesels. She then entered the the folk circuit in Illinois and San Francisco, California before forming the Shawn Colvin Band. She "strained her voice" singing rock songs took a sabbatical from singing at the age of 24.
Colvin later moved to New York City and with a renewed voice became involved in the Fast Folk cooperative of Greenwich Village. Over time she became progressively more popular on the new folk circuit and while appearing in the off-Broadway shows, Diamond Studs, Pump Boys and Dinettes, and Lie of the Mind. She was featured in Fast Folk magazine, and in 1987 sang backup vocals on the song Luka by Suzanne Vega.
Mary Chapin Carpenter (born February 21, 1958) is an American folk and country music singer, songwriter and musician. Carpenter spent several years singing in Washington, D.C. clubs before signing in the late 1980s with Columbia Records, who marketed her as a country singer. Carpenter's first album, 1987's Hometown Girl, did not produce any singles, although 1989's State of the Heart and 1990's Shooting Straight in the Dark each produced four Top 20 hits on the Billboard country singles charts.
Carpenter's most successful album to date remains 1992's Come On Come On, which yielded seven charting country singles and was certified quadruple platinum in the U.S. for sales exceeding four million copies. She followed it with Stones in the Road (1994) and A Place in the World (1996), which both featured hit singles. In the 2000s, Carpenter's albums departed both thematically and musically from her early work, becoming less radio-friendly and more focused on societal and political issues. Her most acclaimed and most topical album to date, The Calling, was released in March 2007. She followed that with The Age of Miracles in April 2010.
You said that I would be sorry
If you went away
You said I wouldn't be happy
Without hell to pay
You said the teardrops would fall
Between the bedroom walls
You said that I would regret
But it hasn't happened yet
Your friends come over and offer
To take me to eat
They seem so sorry I'm suffering
So much misery
They say to just give a call
Next time that I start to crawl
I always say yeah, you bet
But it hasn't happened yet
I don't have anyone
I'm having fun
Nobody's into me
No one's a mystery
I see you on the street
My heart don't miss a beat
Love and hostility
Don't mean a thing to me
I find it hard to remember
The good times we had
Call me insensitive
Now that it's over, I'm glad
You said when big shadows fell
It would be too hard to tell
My life from your silhouette
But it hasn't happened yet
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float upstream
Please don't wake me
No don't shake me
Leave me where I am
I'm only sleeping
Everybody seems to think I'm lazy
I don't mind, I think they're crazy
Running everywhere at such a speed
Till they find, there's no need
Please don't spoil my day
I'm miles away
And after all
I'm only sleeping
Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
Lying there and staring at the ceiling
Waiting for a sleepy feeling
Please don't spoil my day
I'm miles away
And after all
I'm only sleeping
Keeping an eye on the world going by my window
Taking my time
When I wake up early in the morning
Lift my head, I'm still yawning
When I'm in the middle of a dream
Stay in bed, float upstream
Please don't wake me
No don't shake me
Leave me where I am
(John Hiatt)
Why did she wear that dress tonight?
Why did she bring that stranger
She looks put out in party lights
Which leaves us all in danger
When she drops her perfumed hanky
I look for love (repeat 4 times)
I hate the way they carry on
These fashion consultations
Do all the wires we sing along
Require such insulation
Fused with fear or charged with anger
I look for love (repeat 4 times)
No innocence I can claim
No treasure of stolen hearts
In the mirror I look the same
A toy soldiers with missing parts
She's adding up those second looks
While he collects advances
Like thumbing through those dirty books
They estimate their chances
When the parking lot is empty
Three steps down below the city streets.
In our private room, the colour all runs out.
An' not a sound, the smoke curls in the air.
An' I can feel a sliding peace, come over me tonight.
Dead or dancin', cross the room,
The candles burn and shadows loom.
I hide below it all,
Or heaven's underground.
The clouds are fallin' at our feet,
Three steps down below the street.
So comin' down: it's like water after wine.
Oh, comin' down a long hard line.
An' I know better's gettin' harder all the time.
From three steps down.
From three steps down.
Instrumental break
Dead or dancin', cross the room,
The candles burn and shadows loom.
I hide below it all,
Or heaven's underground.
The clouds are fallin' at our feet,
Three steps down below the street.
Three steps down below the city streets.
In our private room, the colour all runs out.
The colour all runs out.
The colour all runs out.
The colour all runs out.
Now that you've made your mistake
Now that you know how the heart bends and breaks
Just throw away the book and take a second look
Behind the door a guided tour, what we came here for
One, don't let the sun go down on
Two, love but are undone by
Three, whose name is
I won't even start before we learn the rules
Like one, don't let the sun go down on
Two, love but are undone by
Three, whose name is
I won't even start before we learn the rules of travel
Inside each other's hearts
Inside each other's hearts
When do the walls tumble down?
Into the sky, into the stars and the ground
Today, to give it up; surrender to the love, no man to hold
No way to know that you are home
One, don't let the sun go down on
Two, love but are undone by
Three, whose name is
I won't even start before we learn the rules
Like one, don't let the sun go down on
Two, love but are undone by
Three, whose name is
I won't even start before we learn the rules of travel
Inside each other's hearts
Inside each other's hearts
(Don't let the sun)
Three
(Don't let the sun)
Four
One, don't let the sun go down on
Two, love but are undone by
Three, whose name is
I won't even start before we learn the rules
Like one, don't let the sun go down on
Two, love but are undone by
Three, whose name is
I won't even start before we learn the rules of travel
Inside each other's hearts
I'll change for you.
I'll change for you.
I'll change for you.
I'll turn night into day.
An' I'll change for you. (I don't care what the books say.)
I'll change for you. (I don't care what my friends say.)
I'll change for you,
An' I won't make you pay.
'Cause everything reminds me of you.
A baby's feet, an old man's smile.
Silent scream and lover's cry,
Till I can't do nothing,
But change for you. (An' all the rules that were lies.)
I'll change for you. (I sit an' watch while they burn.)
I'll change for you.
I'll be all that you need.
'Cause everything reminds me of you.
A baby's feet, an old man's smile.
Silent scream and lover's cry,
Till I can't do nothing.
But change for you.
Instrumental break.
I'll lie by your side an' whisper your name.
I'll clock all your dreams and knock over rails.
I'll let go my past, write your name in my skin.
I'll travel through time to love you again.
An' I'll change for you. (I'll just wait for you wherever.)
I'll change for you. (An' watch you lean back too much.)
I'll change for you.
I'll turn night into day.
I'll change for you. (An' I'll give it my best.)
I'll change for you. (An' I won't stop till you rest.)
I'll change for you.
An' I won't make you pay.
I stand here by the Western Wall
Maybe a little of that wall
Stands inside of us all
I shove my prayers in the cracks
I got nothing to lose
No one to answer back
All these years I've brought up for review
I wasn't taught this but I learned something new
I had to answer a distant call
At the Western Wall
I've got a heart full of fear
And I offer it up on this altar of tears
Red dust settles deep in my skin
I don't know where it stops
And where I begin
It's a crumbling pile of broken stones
It ain't much but it might be home
If I ever loved a place at all, it's the Western Wall
I don't know if God was ever a man
But if She was, I think I understand
Why He found a place to break his fall
Will you remember me
Like the circled stones
On the ancient hills
Where you walk alone?
Where the wind can speak
My secret name
Like the air you breathe
Will you remember me?
Will you remember me
As your airplane flies?
Over foreign seas
An' breaking skies
Like a perfect child
You can't bear to leave
In your last long days
Will you remember me?
Will you remember me
On the edge of life
Where time runs slow
Where song can fly
In these shuttered rooms
Where we say goodbye
When the soul is free
Will you remember?
When there's no need to breathe
There's a cross above the baby's bed,
A Saviour in her dreams.
But she was not delivered then,
And the baby became me.
There's a light inside the darkened room,
A footstep on the stair.
A door that I forever close,
To leave those memories there.
So when the shadows link them,
Into an evening sun.
Well first there's summer, then I'll let you in.
September when it comes.
I plan to crawl outside these walls,
Close my eyes and see.
And fall into the heart and arms,
Of those who wait for me.
I cannot move a mountain now;
I can no longer run.
I cannot be who I was then:
In a way, I never was.
I watch the clouds go sailing;
I watch the clock and sun.
Oh, I watch myself, depending on,
September when it comes.
So when the shadows link them,
And burn away the clouds.
They will fly me, like an angel,
To a place where I can rest.
When this begins, I'll let you know,
September when it comes.
I am the keeper of a very old flame.
It's long been ignored, but it's not been completely in vain.
And all that I was, I gave that to you.
And if it's not enough, oh, there's nothing more I can do.
I guard the well to a century of tears.
I let them fall after hours and all through the years.
And all that I am as I stand here today,
Seems more than enough, there's nothing more I will say.
You're the last stop before home,
An' I always go home.
You're the last stop and everything I know,
That I always go home.
Instrumental break.
I'm not the sleeper who waits for a kiss.
But who is the God who designed me to love you like this?
An' if I break in two and fall to my knees,
An' tell you the truth, would you then believe you have been this to me.
The last stop before home,
An' I always go home.
You're the last stop and everything I know,
That I always go home.
You're the last stop before home,
I love you till I just can't feel
I need you till it makes me numb
We hang on a noose of subtle abuse
Like there's nothing to fear
Livin' in the land of nightmares
The ocean's calm outside my door
The storm rages inside my head
In perfect control so no one could know
I smile but I'm not even there
Livin' in the land of nightmares
A vision full of sound and light
I think, she's holdin' back all night
With bitter desire, she stoops to conspire
She is the reason I'm here
Lock all the doors an' turn out the lights.
Work this thing through till we get it right.
But if I seem angry an' cold,
Or I don't speak at all,
It's just that old fear,
'Cause baby, I'm closer than I appear.
An' here are the facts, as much as I know.
We've got to turn back if we can't let it go.
You know your heart an' your mind.
An' I'm just three steps behind,
But I feel those tears,
'Cause baby, I'm closer than I appear.
Yeah, baby, I'm closer than I appear.
'Cause somewhere inside, I'm reachin' out for you.
Somewhere inside, we both know the truth.
But I learned lots of rules 'bout what a man's made of,
An' I got to rethink what I know about love.
Hey, I'm willin' to change.
If I still seem the same, well it's just them old fears.
An', baby, I'm closer than I appear.
If I was born to stand here, an' give you nothing but love,
To fill up these years,
Then, baby, I'm closer than I appear.
Yeah, baby, I'm closer than I appear.
Well, come closer, an' I'll come closer.
Baptize her with bitter tears till she knows your pain is real
Next time you see her on her knees, don't try to make a deal
Don't stare her into silence with frozen point of view
'Cause she's got 44 stories, she wants to tell them all to you
Welcome her to all your fears and trust that she will cope
Give her one day of satisfaction for a thousand years of hope
Don't turn to dry your eyes and lose your chance to look
'Cause she's got 44 stories, she wants to write them in a book
Wait until your memory clears then welcome her to Rome
The desert of your misspent years that led you to her home
Don't hold her up to sunlight, she'll melt into the blue
Don't make her shout through static if you want hear the truth
'Cause she's got 44 stories, she's got 44 stories
Do you wanna be honest, or do you wanna win?
You could have it all if you could gracefully give in.
Like when a martyr go sees a martyr.
Lookin' in the mirror makes you cry harder,
'Bout your glitterin' ball and chain.
In love, in love with your beautiful pain.
Excuses and all theories peak themelves and die.
Even when they don't hold water, you try to keep them safe and dry.
An' trade your moan for a positive tone,
Reassured by ads about things you own,
And so we go through this again,
In love, in love with your beautiful pain.
If everything went runnin' smoothly,
You'd soon lose who you were.
Oh, the pain and hurt, for that's your real,
So go on, go back to her.
Instrumental Break.
You packed up all your troubles, you let me play the bars.
An' hiked out to the meadows and lay down on the fragrant moss.
Put down your own tree, then meticulously,
Built a cross right there and stared back at me.
An' climbed up on it again:
In love, in love with your beautiful
In love, in love with your beautiful
In love, in love with your beautiful pain.
(Rosanne Cash)
I'm staying in your house
I'm sleeping in your bed
I'm walking through your dreams
I'm dancing through your head
I'm calling from the streets
I'm crying like the wind
'Cause you are there
And I am here
And you won't let me in
Well I'm changing like a girl
On the threshold of her life
In love with the whole world
But staring down each night
You're everything I need
A love I can't defend
But you are there
And I am here
And you won't let me in
You are there
And I am here
And you won't let me in
No time for kisses
No time to laugh
No way that I can see
To crawl out of our past
Well I'm falling to my knees
But I'm flying like a bird
I follow where you lead
I hang on every word
I can't control the wind
I don't care who you've been
But you are there
And I am here
And you won't let me in
You are there
And I am here
And you won't let me
You are there
I am here
And you won't let me in
You are there
And I am here
And you won't let me in
I keep on callin'
I keep on callin'
Clouds so swift
Rain won't lift
Gate won't close
Railings froze
Get your mind off wintertime
You ain't goin' nowhere
CHORUS:
Whoo-ee! Ride me high
Tomorrow's the day
My bride's gonna come
Oh, oh, are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair!
I don't care
How many letters they sent
Morning came and morning went
Pick up your money
And pack up your tent
You ain't goin' nowhere
CHORUS
Buy me a flute
And a gun that shoots
Tailgates and substitutes
Strap yourself
To the tree with roots
You ain't goin' nowhere
CHORUS
Genghis Khan
He could not keep
All his kings
Supplied with sleep
We'll climb that hill no matter how steep
I wish I was a christian, knew what to believe
I could learn a lot of rules to put my mind at ease
I wish I had the money to live just like a queen
With Demerols and Cashmere and every little thing
I wish the ones who loved me would never go away
Would've had to have my company every single day
But who do I believe in this world without sound
Who do I believe once they put you in the ground
Who do I believe when the night's fallin' down
I wish I lived in Paris and dreamed in French each night
And had a dozen children and raised them up just right
I wish I was John Lennon, free as a bird
And all of you who sit and stare and hang on every word
I wish I had the future tied up with a string
Then I would never feel the blows the revolution brings
But who do I believe in this world without sound
Who do I believe once they put you in the ground
Who do I believe when the night's fallin' down
I wish I was a christian, but I cannot believe
Bare me up on wings of Angels
Let me hear the choir sing
Let me see
The facets of the chair of Him
Lift me up on wings of Angels
Three or four or more
And place me in my weakness
Perfect at your door
Jesus, I'm tryin' to get to You
Jesus, I'm tryin' to come home
Bare me up on wings of Angels
Lest I cast my foot against a stone
Well, the world keeps flyin' around
And I'm almost outta sight
I keep slippin' into Hell
I can't seem to get it right
Bare me up on wings of Angels
I might make it, I might not
But Jesus
I'm givin' it all I've got
Jesus, I'm tryin' to get to You
Jesus, I'm tryin' to come home
Bare me up on wings of Angels
How long was I alseep?
When did we plan to meet?
Have you been waiting long for me?
When did the sky turn black?
Do you still want me back?
I'll pick it all up piece by piece.
And the wheel goes round and round.
And the flame in our souls will never burn out.
And the wheel, and the wheel goes round.
I am a river with a voice.
I came into your life by choice.
And none can judge just how that feels.
You are a messenger from God.
You are the angel I forgot.
And who's to say that it isn't real?
And the wheel goes round and round.
And the flame in our souls will never burn out.
And the wheel, and the wheel goes round.
I'm not looking for the answers.
Oh, darling don't you see
That just to know the question
Is good enough for me.
Take up the hearts you came to heal.
Put down your dagger and your shield.
You need fear nothing now from me.
I see the essence of the man.
I stand before you as a friend.
The truth moves through us even when we sleep.
And the wheel goes round and round.
And the flame in our souls will never burn out.
(Rosanne Cash)
If I don't make promises will you stay around
I won't let you hurt me
I know better by now
It's hard to control it
It hurts to decide if we trust in tomorrow
We can do what we like
You're a poet by nature, a drifter by heart
A change from the old ways
A love in the dark
It might be my conscience
It's hurting your pride
We may get pass heartache
We can do what we like
You can close the last door on my past
My eyes are set forward
My charts are in order
My hands are tied behind my back
I would not deny you or catch you off guard
For old souls with young minds can take things so hard
While we practise the distance I keep you in sight
After the snow clears
Three steps down below the city streets
In our private room, the color all runs out
An' not a sound, the smoke curls in the air
And I can feel a sliding peace, come over me tonight
Dead or dancin', 'cross the room
The candles burn and shadows loom
I hide below it all or heaven's underground
The clouds are fallin' at our feet
Three steps down below the street
So comin' down, it's like water after wine
Oh, comin' down a long hard line
And I know better's gettin' harder all the time
From three steps down, from three steps down
Dead or dancin', 'cross the room
The candles burn and shadows loom
I hide below it all or heaven's underground
The clouds are fallin' at our feet
Three steps down below the street
Three steps down below the city streets
In our private room, the color all runs out
The color all runs out, the color all runs out
(Bashan - Neale)
From the train I watch the tracks go by
They look the same mile after mile from my pain
I watch the time go by
Things seen to change
Though I'd loved you all this while
My love is like a mountain in a storm
Surviving like a bumper through a wall
With all the things you said and done
You tried to tear it down
But nothing seen to make me come around
You were mine, it happened to be Spring
It was a time for letting new things grow
I was shy to come beneath your wings
I left behind what I chosen not to know
You are gone like all my loves before
Your very name still shakes me to the core
I was wrong to love you so much more
(Russell Smith)
Sittin' at a tiny table in a ritzy restaurant
She was satrin' at her coffee cup
He was tryin' to keep his courage up
By applyin' booze
Talk was small, if they talked at all
They both knew what they wanted
There was no need to talk about it
They were old enough to know about it
And keep it loose
She said,"You don't look like my type
But I guess you'll do"
Third rate romance, low rent rendezvous
He said,"I'll even tell you that I love you
If you want me to"
Third rate romance, low rent rendezvous
When they left the bar they got in his car
And they drove away
They drove to the family inn
She didn't even have to pretend
She didn't know what for
Then he went to the desk
And he made his request
While she waited outside
Then he came back with the key
And she said,"Give it to me,
I'll unlock the door"
She kept saying,"I've never really done this kind of thing before, have you?"
Third rate romance, low rent rendezvous
He said,"Yes I have,
But only a time or two"
I'm the sparrow on the roof
I'm the list of everyone I have to lose
I'm the rainbow in the dart
I am who I was and how much I can hurt
So I will look for you in stories of hurricans
Westward leading, still proceeding
To the world unseen
I'm the mirror in the hall
From your empty room I can hear it fall
Now that we must live apart
I have a lock of hair and one-half of my heart
So I will look for you
Between the grooves of songs we sing
Westward leading, still proceeding
To the world unseen
There are no gifts that will be found
Wrapped in winter, laid beneath the ground
You must be somewhere in the stars
'Cause from a distance comes the sound of your guitar
And I will look for you in Memphis and the miles between
I will look for you in morphine and in dreams
I will look for you in the rhythm of my bloodstream
Westward leading, still proceeding
Just one more kiss she'll have to miss this night with you
Now you're guilty of this secret love as I am too
You'll get used to telling lies feeling sorry when she cries
Now that the strings aren't attached you'll catch on we've done our part
Oh this is the way we make a broken heart
Lesson number one we've just begun to hurt her so
And with lesson two she'll long for you when lights are low
And when we get to lesson three when she gets down on her knees
And begs you to stop at the door just before she comes apart
Oh this is the way we make a broken heart
Now we've made a trail of tears for her to follow
And we've thought of every line that she might swallow
And with lesson four there will be no more for her to bear
And on some dark night we'll dim the lights on this affair
Then she'll find somebody new and he'll likely hurt her too
Cause there must be millions just like you and me practiced in the art
Oh and this is the way we make a broken heart
Oh and this is the way we make a broken heart
Ay yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi
This is the way we make a broken heart
Ay yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi
This is the way, this is the way, this is the way, this is the way
I know the truth about you babe
Know the stories you tell
I can feel your heart locked up inside you
Swear I know you so well
When the wind blows out across the water
and we stand here in this light
all our secrets fall like raindrops between us
and i know the truth tonight
know the truth about you babe
i can feel it through your hands
i can touch it when i'm sleeping
i can love it when you can
if our ships sail on to distant places
and our memories burn and fade
i might say i loved a man just like you
and i know the truth today
i know the truth bout you babe
where you fall and where you stand
where your walls still come between us
Take these chains from my heart and set me free
You're grow cold and no longer care for me
All my faith in you is gone but the heartaches linger on
Take these chains from my heart and set me free
Take these tears from my eyes and let me see
Just a spark of the love that use to be
If you love somebody new let me me find a new love too
Take these chains from my heart and set me free
Give my heart just a word of sympathy
Be as fair to my heart as you can be
Then if you no longer care for the love being there
Take these chains from my heart and set me free
Take these chains from my heart and set me free
You're grow cold and no longer care for me
All my faith in you is gone but the heartaches linger on
(Keith Sykes)
Take me, take me in your heart tonight
And make me think these things I say are right
In the morning I ignore the dawn
With a bag of dreams to a cold hard town
Take me, take me in your heart tonight
It's a easy thing to say you're leaving
I Know I've done it everywhere I've been
In the morning we'll know the truth
And it makes me want to shout out what's the use
So take me, take me in your heart tonight
Make me feel like I'll see you again
Let's pretend we're happy like old friends
Make believe there's nothing wrong
Though the time's too short for a love so strong
(Rosanne Cash)
Halfway 'round the planet
And the telephone won't do
I'm starin' up at midnight
But lookin' just for you
If you're aching in the starlight
And looking for me too
Then, gazing at the same sight
Might I not see you?
We'll rendezvous on Venus
And dance on Saturn's rings
We'll drink a little moonlight
And ride the old man's wings
I do believe you love me
I wish with all my might
Somewhere in the stars
I'll be meeting you tonight
With feet on terra firma
And heart in Milky Way
We'll ask the the old timekeeper
To look the other way
We'll rendezvous on Venus
Dance on Saturn's wings
We'll drink a little moonlight
And ride the old man's wings
I do believe you love me
I wish with all my might
Somewhere in the stars
(Gribble)
So fine, so fine, so fine yeah
My baby is so doggone fine
He sends cold chills up and down my spine
Whoa whoa yeah yeah so fine
Thrills me, thrills me
He thrills me
He sends cold chills up and down my spine
Whoa whoa yeah yeah so fine
I know he loves me so
Yes I know
For my baby sure tells me so
I'll send the angels to watch over you tonight
And you send them right back to me
A lonely road is a bodyguard
If we really want it to be
There's fascination behind every window
But I know you really care for me
And soon we'll be sleeping in Paris
And we can set those angels free
No one sees behind the mask
No one knows I'm sinking fast
But soon we'll be sleeping in Paris
And we can set those angels free
Love is just a lunar slave
It's tied to the ebb and flow
Generations get glued to the waves
Just to see which way they'll go
There's desperation on wild street corners
But I think you're just waiting for me
And soon we'll be sleeping in Paris
And we can set those wild ones free
No one sees behind the door
But every day it's one step forward
And soon we'll be sleeping in Paris
And we can set those wild ones free
All those nights I laid with my eyes closed
But not sleeping at all, those nights
I thought I knew which way the wind blows
But now it's blowing me back to you
And the wind speaks French too
No one sees and no one knows
But every day I'm letting go
And soon we'll be sleeping in Paris
Soon we'll be sleeping in Paris
The world keeps getting smaller
'Till it closes 'round my room
And everything I feel now
Is hard and fast and true
My window is a spotlight
On the madness down below
It takes a silent figure
To make this place a home
And now the candles burn all night without you
And the moon hangs out of sight, so blue
On Seventh Avenue
I gave you what you wanted
And it took so many years
Now I'm just a part of
The traffic and the tears
I am not a lighthouse
Not the answer or the truth
But the love that I held onto
Is safe inside this room
Now the candles burn all night without you
And the moon hangs out of sight, so blue
On Seventh Avenue
Now the candles burn all night without you
And the moon hangs out of sight, so blue
On Seventh Avenue
All of the stories from all of our lives
RUNAWAY TRAIN
I'm worried about you
I'm worried about me
The curves around midnight
Aren't easy to see
Flashing red warnings
Unseen in the rain
This thing has turned into
A runaway train
Long-distance phone calls
A voice on the line
Electrical miles
That soften the time
The dynamite too
Is hooked on the wire
And so are the rails
Of American Flyers
Blind boys and gamblers
They invented the blues
Will pay up in blood
When this marker comes due
To try and get off now
It's about as insane
As those who wave lanterns
At runaway trains
Steel rails and hard lives
Are always in twos
I have been here before this
And now it's with you
I'm worried about you
I'm worried about me
We're lighting the fuses
And counting to three
And what are the choices
For those who remain
The sign of the cross
On a runaway train
This thing has turned into
A runaway train
This thing has turned into
A runaway train
Our love has turned into
(Rosanne Cash)
I throw your roses in the fire
To make the flames a little higher
I watch your roses turn to dust
I know no man that I can trust
I throw your roses in the fire
'Cause I burn up with pity and desire
I'll be your vision dressed in black
Who won't be back
Another woman's on the phone
Pick it up
Tell her you're home
I see your face turn into broken glass
Talking slow
Thinking fast
I throw your roses in the fire
No one could say I didn't try
I watch your roses fall like tears
I've crawled this path for all these years
I throw your roses in the fire
To burn away the old desire
We were a desperate pair of souls
So let me go
Another woman has her point of view
Let her talk
Now that we're through
I see your face retreat behind the glass
Listening slow
Sinking fast
Oh I'll kill you if we can't be friends
I'll bleed like diamonds running through your hands
I'll be a bitter taste you can't forget
And I won't leave this world until you relent
I throw your roses in the fire
To burn away the old desire
I watch your roses turn to dust
I know no man that I can trust
I throw your roses in the fire
To make the flames a little higher
I'll be your vision dressed in black
Who won't be back
I won't be back
RIGHT OR WRONG
(Keith Sykes)
You don't ever worry where I've gone
When I'm not at home
I'm the lonely one
You don't talk about it
In the way what you use to say
Couldn't be undone
Is it right or wrong
Baby I can't tell
Alot of people do it
And they do it so well
Right or wrong
Baby I don't know
It's the only thing I think about
Wherever I go
You don't ever ask me where I've been
When I'm coming in
You're not concerned
I could be sleeping all around
All over town
I think it's time I learned
Is it right or wrong
Baby I can't tell
Alot of people do it
And they do it so well
Right or wrong
Baby I don't know
It's the only thing I think about
Wherever I go
Is it right or wrong
Baby I can't tell
Alot of people do it
And they do it so well
You don't love me
And I tag along
Baby can you tell me
Is it right or wrong
Is it right or wrong
Baby I can't tell
Alot of people do it
And they do it so well
Right or wrong
Baby I don't know
It's the only thing I think about
Wherever I go
Right or wrong
Right or wrong
Radio operator, in a tiny foreign room
We can hear you now and later
Calling out and coming through
Radio operator, you're a voice so far from home
With a signal like a heartbeat
Not afraid but so alone
Where are the messages for me?
The secret codes for parts unknown
I'll ride the signal to the world
And to the girl in San Antone
Radio operator, do you ever think of me?
'Cause I'm a gleam on some horizon
Just too far away to see
Radio operator, there are still messages to send
From the future, from the present
And it never has to end
Where are the messages for me?
The secret codes for parts unknown
I'll ride the signal to the world
And to the girl in San Antone
Radio operator, I am calling like a friend
From my future, from your memory
And it never has to end
Standing on the edge of tonight
Don't know if I'll fall or fly
But that's the price you pay for temptation
There's no other way through temptation
That's the price you pay
Well, I'll let the rivers cry through my eyes
And watch myself go crazy with desire
But that's the price you pay for temptation
There's no other way through temptation
That's the price you pay
God says, ?Here's a lesson and a kiss
You can walk though fire or crawl through this?
But that's the price you pay for temptation
There's no other way through temptation
She paints her fingernails forbidden tones
She wants nervous youth on the telephone
He don't call, she sticks another pin in her doll
And puts it next to her stuffed animals
She got the tube top, she got the French heels
She got the blow dry, she got her eyes peeled
She got the tight jeans, seventeen magazine
She got it all, she got it all, she got it all in her pink bedroom
She thinks all her boyfriends are so dumb
She drinks Coca-Cola with Valium
Mother calls, she sticks another pin in her doll
And lets those fingers talk her into it
She got the lip gloss, she got the short shorts
She got her records and they're all imports
She got her good looks, she got her yearbook
She got it all, she got it all, she got it all in her pink bedroom
They say they got her future down at the desk
Now they're drawing blood for the grown-up test
Something crawls beneath her lily skin
And her doll is so relieved, she's lost her innocence
It was a teen game now we're serious
It's all customized, don't get curious
She got her pension and your attention
(Rosanne Cash)
I picked up the phone, you were both on the line
Your words to each other froze me in time
A lifetime between us just burnt on the wires
Dissolved in a dial tone, consumed in your fires
Your footsteps beside me, the phone in my hand
I can't move
I can't stand
Our faces in pieces, facades on the floor
The pretense between us for a moment destroyed
I don't want to go on with these words in my heart
But the ghost of your anger will tear us apart
How my little world just went up in smoke
I'm too young
I'm too old
One day soon I'll know
One day soon I'll just let it go
I run from the bedroom with legs paralyzed
I carve out my future part prophet, part blind
It's nobody's business, no one is to blame
We'll meet in the distance, new numbers new names
I've lifted the veil, I've walked through the fire
I'll move on
On the surface everything seems right no one notices the dimness of the light
For the world outside our door our smiles are oh so bright
On the surface everything's all right
We have the grace of actors on the stage
We orchestrate the moves that complement the play
But the things that we believe in we just throw them away
On the surface everything's okay
[ guitar ]
We say goodnight and then we close our eyes
To drift in different worlds far from each other's sight
Dreaming of yesterday when we held each other tight
And on the surface everything's all right
What are you thinking tonight I don't know you (I don't know you)
My words disappear in the night and there's no one there to notice
Maybe our lives will never be the same
But we can face tomorrow if we can just get through today
I'm holding back the tears while you're pushing me away
We crawled night and day through the tears and debries
Now I'm reaching out to you but I'm keeping my hands clean
The tables are turning the tempo slows down
And we're gettin' off this misery-go-round
It's a brand new world baby now things have changed
A brand new picture in a brand new frame
A turn of the page with a blink of your eye
Our two steps in rhythm our hearts beatin' time
On the inside it all happened on the inside it all went down on the inside
A critical moment I know you'd agree both of us separate but neither one free
We traded our papers for new walking shoes
But I had no idea how I'd feel without you
We watched it unravel we heard it unwind imprisoned by anger embittered by time
No one could tell me we'd be standing here today
Steeled by the fire and sealed by the pain
On the inside it all happened on the inside it all went down on the inside
I'm holding on to you and I know you're holding on to me too
We gave it one more chance and found the key to romance
Now none of it happens like we think it should be
Hey it'd all be disaster if left up to me
By the power of love and protection divine
We found we hold hands through the darkness and then there was light
On the inside it all happened on the inside it all went down on the inside
(Susanna Clark - John Reid)
Rain, rain
Lord watch it rain
Wash away the dirt
Can't wash away the pain
I feel as empty
As a paper cup
Gonna take that thing
Gonna fill it up
Oh yes I can
Anytime I want to
Oh yes I can
Baby and I think that I'm going to
Break my heart
This one's on me
I ain't lookin' for
Any sympathy
I feel like fallin'
For some old worn out line
Oh don't you know
I can get it anywhere
Anytime
Oh yes I can
Anytime I want to
Oh yes I can
Baby and I think that I'm going to
Night is calling
And I want to answer
Got to move in closer
Baby cause I'm a dancer
Got to play it louder
Got to make it stronger
Got to dance my heart out
(Rosanne Cash)
You give me no reason to cry but I do
You tell me you don't tell me lies, is that true?
I can't stand your strange emotion
I don't like your meek devotion
Just send my old heart in motion
So you can't hurt me anymore
It ain't ever gonna hurt anymore
You tell me I got out of line and I did
You think I'll never survive but I'll live
Let's break up that bound together
I'll use all my drastic measures
And leave while I still feel clever
So you can't hurt me anymore
It ain't ever gonna hurt anymore
Well I think you've lost your youth
And you think I play too loose
But I'll tell you what the truth is
You can't hurt me anymore
So let go of old emotions
Get someone's new devotion
You think I'm only jokin'
But you can't hurt me anymore
Take a look at my eyes
It's been a long, long time
I used to feel so strong
When I knew you were mine
But since you let me down
I'm hard to be around
I don't know what I'm gonna do
He could never be you
He could never be you
I guess it all comes around
Baby, please don't cry
Love is gonna be a little reckless
Oh, lovers all have to stand trial
Since you let me go
There's nothing going on
I don't know what I'm gonna do
He could never be you
He could never be you
He could never be you
He knows the rules
And he plays the part
But he only has me
He don't have my heart
He could never be you
So, take a look at my eyes
No you can't hide the truth
No you don't get by on pride
It'll run over you
Since you let me down
I'm hard to be around
I don't know what I'm gonna do
He could never be you
He could never be you
He could never be you
He could never be you
You were like a lost kid looking for home
You found what you wanted right in my arms
If you walk out on me, just leave your memory
Just take my sympathy and go
I love you so you're never alone
If you find another one turns your head
And you can't understand why it hurts so bad
If you walk out on me, just leave your memory
Just take my sympathy and go
I love you so you're never alone
Ain`t no need to talk about it
I can learn to live without it
Just leave your heart right here with me
If you walk out on me, just leave your memory
Just take my sympathy and go
If you walk out on me, just leave your memory
Just take my sympathy and go
I love you so you're never alone
(Rosanne Cash)
The old man is laughing tonight
He's young beyond his fears
But then the smile drops from his eyes
And we all wind up in tears
The old man's crying tonight
'Cause it all happened so fast
He's frightened by the future
Embarrassed by the past
So let him be who he wants to be
'Cause he ain't ever gonna be young again
And let him see who he needs to see
'Cause he never had too many friends
And ask him how he remembers me
'Cause I want to know where I stand
How I love my old man
The old man's restless tonight
Just trying to kill his pain
He believes what he says he believes
But that don't make him a saint
The old man's lonesome tonight
And he just wants to go home
All those fools who stand in his way
Why can't they leave him alone
So let him be who he wants to be
'Cause he ain't ever gonna be young again
And let him see who he needs to see
'Cause he never had too many friends
And ask how he remembers me
'Cause I want to know where I stand
(K. Radio)
Let us put men and women together
To see which one is smarter
Some say men I say no
Women got the men like a puppet show
It ain't me
It's the people that say
Men are leading the women astray
But I say
It's the women today
Smarter than a man in every way
That's right
The women are smarter
That's right
The women are smarter
That's right
The women are smarter
Smarter than a man in every way
Little boy sat down and cried
An old man stopped to ask him why
He said I cam't do what the big boys do
Old man sat down and he cried too
It's three a.m. in the morning
The train whistle is blowin'
It sounds like some lonesome song got in my soul, in my soul
My baby split blank and he won't be back no more
My baby thinks he's a train
He makes his whistle stop, then he's gone again
Sometimes it's hard on a poor girl's brain, a poor girl's brain
I'm tellin' you, boys, my baby thinks he's a train
Locomotion's the way he moves
He drags me 'round just like an old caboose
I'm tellin' you, girls, that man's insane
My baby thinks he's a train
Choo, choo rages on, train sound
It's the noise that you hear when my baby hits town
With his long hair flyin', man, he's hard to take
What you s'posed to do when your baby thinks he's a train?
He eats money like a train eats coal
He burns it up and leaves you in the smoke
If you wanna catch a ride, you wait 'til he unwinds
He's just like a train, he always gives some tramp a ride
Locomotion's the way he moves
He drags me 'round just like an old caboose
I'm tellin' you, girls, that man's insane
I'm groing tired of the big city lights
Tired of the glamour, tired of the size
I'm alway dreaming of roaming once more
Back to my home on the old river shore
Days are dark and dreary everwhere I roam
How I long for Mississippi and you
Nothing seems to cheer me under heaven's door
How I miss the Mississippi and you
Roaming the wide world over
Always alone and blue, so blue
I am sad and weary, longing to go home
Yes, I miss the Mississippi and you
(Break)
Mockingbirds are singing 'round the cabindoor
While I dream of Mississippi and you
And my memories are bringing happy days of yore
I have spent in Mississippi with you
Roaming the wide world over
Always alone and blue, so blue
Longing for my homeland on that muddy watershore
Yes, I miss the Mississippi and you
I think, I understand
The reason you won't stay with me
You think a ring upon your hand
Will solve your insecurity
So go ahead and play your games
If that's what you must do
Nothing here remains the same
But the way I feel for you
I can watch you walk away
And I know that I'll get by
And I know just what to say
But honey, I can't tell a lie
Figure out what you must do
Because you think you're so damn clever
You can marry anytime you want
But a lover is forever
I can watch you walk away
And I know that I'll get by
And I know just what to say
But honey, I can't tell a lie
Figure out what you must do
Because you think you're so damn clever
You can marry anytime you want
But a lover is forever
You can marry anytime you want
The priest is prayin' for your soul
And the doctor for your heart
Someone tell me how to live
Now that we must live apart
Once we had a mother
But that's all over now
So wish her well and let her go
Just as soon as you know how
It's a strange new world we live in
Where the church leads you to hell
And the lawyers get the money
For the lives they divide and sell
And the only truth believed in
Is the one upon the screen
So we live our lives like fugitives
And we were born to live like queens
Once we all were daughters
Now we'll never hear thy name
I never think I could have learned
I just turned into the game
Don't send me no more letters
With your ignorance and rage
I don't want your tired religion
Not a soul you need to save
It's a strange new world we live in
Where the church leads you to hell
And the lawyers get the money
For the lives they divide and sell
It's a strange new world we live in
Where the church sends you to hell
And the lawyers get the money
For the lives they divide and sell
And the only truth believed in
Is the one upon the screen
So we live our lives like fugitives
My memory is filling with smoke
Such a relief not to know
Except for the body and soul
There's nothing here I want to own
But I gave my love and it rolls like a wave
Back through my history on past the grave
My taxi is waiting outside
Sure we'll begin right on time
Now you are still writing your lines
But I will not open my eyes
But I gave my love and it rolls like a wave
Back through my history on past the grave
But I gave my love and it rolls like a wave
(George Jones)
I've come here to tell you boys
I'm ragged, but I'm right
I'm a tramp and a gambler
I stay out late at night
Got a porterhouse steak
Three times a day for my board
That's more than any loafer
In this big town can afford
I got a big electric fan
To keep me cool while I sleep
Little baby boy playing around at my feet
I'm a rambler and a gambler
And I lead a dirty life
I tell you boys I'm ragged, but I'm alright
When I got married I knew I'd settle down
Build a little love nest
Right here in my hometown
Now I've got a family
One that I'm proud of
I know that we'll be happy
If you change your mind
And leave the past behind
You know where you'll always find me
And if she breaks your heart
And tears your world apart
You can always count on me
And when your heart's in doubt
And things aren't working out
I can be the one who makes you happy
Call me on the telephone
Darling, I'm always home
If you ever change your mind
When the time is right
I can hold you tight
You know I can wait forever
And time is on our side
And we can surely find
All the love we'll ever need
And take a chance on this
Seal it with a kiss
I can be the one who makes you happy
Call me on the telephone
Darling, I'm always home
If you ever change your mind
All I have is love to give you
Baby, I could be there with you
If you ever change your mind
Call me on the telephone
Darling, I am always home
(Rosanne Cash)
I walk through the wind, the snow and the rain
And no one is there when I fall
The sound of my heartbeat
Is all I have left me
But you know I once I had it all
The prayers of a fool are spoken in haste
And I'm just the one who would know
But I'm sending signals
'Cause I'm falling deeper
Than I thought I could go
Chorus
If there's a God on my side
Why don't she show her face?
If there's a God on my side
Could she live in this place?
If there's a God on my side
Is she inside these walls?
If there's a God on my side
Could she not hear me call?
The tears of the damned
Are falling on me
And mine are the first to go by
The moon starts to spinning
O'm standing frozen
When once I was alive
Chorus
And I keep on calling
Oh I keep on calling
Repeat First Verse
That big eight-wheeler rollin' down the track
Means your true-lovin' daddy ain't comin' back
'Cause I'm movin' on I'll soon be gone
You were flyin' too high for my little old sky
So I'm movin' on
That big loud whistle as it blew and blew
Said hello to the southland we're comin' to you
When we're movin' on oh hear my song
I'll change for you
I'll change for you
I'll change for you
I'll turn night into day
An' I'll change for you
(I don't care what the books say)
I'll change for you
(I don't care what my friends say
I'll change for you
An' I won't make you pay
'Cause everything reminds me of you
A baby's feet, an old man's smile
Silent scream and lover's cry
Till I can't do nothing
But change for you
(An' all the rules that were lies)
I'll change for you
(I sit an' watch while they burn)
I'll change for you
I'll be all that you need
'Cause everything reminds me of you
A baby's feet, an old man's smile
Silent scream and lover's cry
Till I can't do nothing
But change for you
I'll lie by your side an' whisper your name
I'll clock all your dreams and knock over rails
I'll let go my past, write your name in my skin
I'll travel through time to love you again
An' I'll change for you
(I'll just wait for you wherever)
I'll change for you
(An' watch you lean back too much)
I'll change for you
I'll turn night into day
I'll change for you
(An' I'll give it my best)
I'll change for you
(An' I won't stop till you rest)
I'll change for you
Every time I'm near you
My heart jumps all about
My mind can't figure out what to do
But I've been disillusioned
Enough by love turned blue
Your love may be true but I wonder
Am I supposed to think
That your love will be true
And deny the part of me
That says you'd leave me too
'Cause yesterday reminds me
That what I've lost is gone
Your love may linger on but I wonder
Am I supposed to think
That your love will be true
And deny the part of me
That says you'd leave me too
'Cause yesterday reminds me
That what I've lost is gone
Your love may linger on but I wonder
I wonder
I wonder
I Was Watching You Rosanne Cash
Headlights on a Texas road
Hank Williams on the radio
Church wedding, they spent all they had
Now the deal is done to become Mom and Dad
And I was watching you from above
Cause long before life, there was love
See those little girls dressed like china dolls
All for one, then one by one they fall
High on a hill while the world passes by
You never came back, but I know you tried
Cause I was watching you from above
When it all falls apart, there is love
All those years to prove how much I care
I didnt know it, but you were always there
Till September when you slipped away
In the middle of my life on the longest day
Now I hear you say
Ill be watching you from above
Cause long after life, there is love
Baby Ill be watching you from above
(Rosanne Cash)
Distance makes the heart start wondering
Absence makes the anger grow
The world may just be spinning through us
And seperation lets it show
I walk away the fear and anger
I'm talking through the tears each day
I push myself to points of danger
But nothing makes it go away
Chorus
I want a cure
A mental, geographical cure
A physical, chemical cure
Sugar or shopping
Drinking or dropping
The emotional highs
Of my life in disguise
There's one thing for sure
I want a cure
Love seems like a fancy theory
Fame a substitute for friends
Those who love can't get near me
Those who don't are moving in
A heart is like a broken window
Pain depends on point of view
The world may just be slowly stopping
And no one knows but me and you
Chorus
Where no one can see me
No one knows how I'm feeling
It's the right time you know I feel fine tonight (I don't why you don't want me)
It's the right place I've got my new face tonight (I don't why you don't want me)
I'm in the right mood I've got my new shoes tonight (I don't why you don't want me)
I've got a new dress I couldn't care less tonight (I don't why you don't want me)
Somebody told you I was so cold and mean (who was that talking)
Somebody wants you and don't want me in between (she better start walkin')
Somebody hurt you but baby she wasn't me
Let's find a new name for such a old game tonight (I don't why you don't want me)
I'll show you how long that I can go on tonight (I don't why you don't want me)
I don't know why you don't want me
Just when I think that I can make it without you
You come round and say you want me now
You tell me don't leave and I want to believe you
Why can't you see just how much I need you
Somebody told you I was so cold and mean (who was that talking)
Somebody wants you and don't want me in between (she better start walkin')
Somebody hurt you but baby she wasn't me
It's the last chance for a romance tonight (I don't why you don't want me)
There'll be no next time if you won't be mine tonight (I don't why you don't want me)
Well, I miss the sounds of Tennessee
And the smell of heavy rain
The roses in the garden
Laugh before the pain
But I hear his voice close in my ear
I see her smile and wave
I blink and while my eyes are closed
They both have gone away
Blue bare room, the wood and nails
There's nothing left to take
But love and years are not for sale
In our old house on the lake
Well, I'm going down to New Orleans
'Cause we both are sinking fast
And I'll stare into the Bourbon moon
We'll see how long we last
But I hear his voice
I follow down the velvet undertow
Back to the place where I was born
Back to my southern home
Blue bare room, the wood and nails
There's nothing left to take
But love and years are not for sale
In our old house on the lake
In our old house on the lake
It's all coming back to me now
But try as I have to keep
The taste of you off of my tongue
Your face from my fitful sleep
An' I wait and hope against hope like before
An' I wait an' hope that I won't anymore
An' this won't stop till I do
Until I learn to kill the thought
Of everything I could have said
Of everything I wished I'd not
An' I wait, hope against hope like before
An' I wait, hope that I won't anymore
Show rises up from the street
An' a crowd rises up to it's feet
I followed blind after you
I might know better if I'd ever wanted to
The painting here is still not dry
An' I can smell it from the door
It covers every mark you made
The countin' days are keepin' score
An' I wait, hope against hope like before
An' I wait, an' hope that I won't anymore
An' I wait, hope against hope like before
(Rosanne Cash)
I don't have to carry this load alone
Someday I'll stop crying and it won't be long
My eyes to the distance, baby
My hands on the wheel
And I'm gonna rise from the ashes
That's how I feel, I feel
I'm gonna rise from the ashes
I feel inspiration when all may be lost
I claim resurrection no matter the cost
My moment of waking, darlin'
Is so close at hand
And I'm gonna rise from the ashes
I know I can, I can
I'm gonna rise from the ashes
Just give me one more moment
Just give me one night
I'll be all right
You know I will
I will
I hold onto faith inside my fear
I know someone hears me when no one is near
My heart is my compass
My soul is my guide
And I'm gonna rise from the ashes
Be alive, so alive
I'm gonna rise from the ashes
I'm gonna rise from the ashes
If you want to keep a woman like me, you got to hold on
If you want to see how good it can be, baby, hold on
All my friends think that I'm a fool
I tell you something honey, they're not that cool
If you want to keep a woman like me, you better hold on
If you want to know how far we can go, you got to hold on
If you take it slow then I got something to show you
Baby, hold on
All those girls with their empty heads
Can't fill 'em up with the lies they've been fed
If you want to know how far I can go, you got to hold on
She'll give you reasons for her kind
You might believe it, but I'm not that blind
If you think you need a woman like me, you better hold on
If you want to find what I've got on my mind, baby, hold on
All this small talk that keeps us apart
Is only hiding how we feel in our hearts
(Rosanne Cash)
The summer was the killer
Between our hearts and minds
Every day a drama
Dragging by in quarter time
By summer it was over
I couldn't see it through
Trying not to lose my mind
While I was leaving you
Our friends are in the halfway house
You're still on the mend
Don't know if I've changed at all
But I'm in love with you again
We're all in the halfway house
Or so it sometimes seems
Trying to find the truth inside
Instead of getting by on dreams
In summer we were blinded
We thought it couldn't last
Crying 'bout the future
And fighting 'bout the past
The summer was no bargain
And look at us today
Running from the memory of
The price we had to pay
Our friends are in the halfway house
You're still on the mend
Don't know if I've changed at all
But I'm In love with you again
We're all in the halfway house
Or so it sometimes seems
Trying to find the truth inside
Instead of getting by on dreams
We're all in the halfway house
Or so it sometimes seems
Trying to find the truth inside
Instead of getting by on dreams
We're all in the halfway house
I guess I always knew
You could give up on yourself
I sailed in on the good intent
With all intentions clear
A man without a mystery
A vision brought me here
The ocean gave me room to roam
But the shore is calling out
So I will marry, built a home
And see what that's about
Children came by the dozens then
Drifting south like rain
I worked the soil, I used the gun
The waves have to turned to grain
I tried to love this Arkansas
With black and bleeding hands
But I will not survive this life
But I'll become a man
My brother sold my mother's house
I never shed a tear
I could watch the world in smoke
There's nothin' for me here
I've seen behind the darkened vail
That's all I want to know
So I'll sail off on the good intent
To my true happy home
Yes, I sail off on the good intent
God is in the roses
The petals and the thorns
Storms out on the oceans
The souls who will be born
And every drop of rain that falls
Falls for those who mourn
God is in the roses and the thorns
The sun is on the cemetery
Leaves are on the stones
There never was a place on earth
That felt so much like home
We're falling like the velvet petals
We're bleeding and we're torn
But God is in the roses and the thorns
I love you like a brother
A father and a son
It may not last forever and ever
But it never will be done
My whole world fits inside the moment
I saw you be reborn
God is in the roses
And that day was filled with roses
If you're traveling to north country fair
Where the winds hits heavy on borderline
Remember me to the one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine
Hope you see her hairs hanging long
It flows and rolls all down her breast
Please see for me that if her hair is hanging long
Ohh that is the way I remember her best
If you go when the snowflakes fall
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
See for me she has a coat so warm
To keep her from the howling winds
So if you're travelin' in the north country fair
Where the winds hits heavy on the borderline
Remember me the one who loves that
(Rosanne Cash - John Leventhal)
We are awakened, restored and renewed
The bounds of desire have led me to you
The heat of the questions that linger and stir
Is the fire that enfolds us, a place to be cured
Salvation and rescue
And the one thing of which I am sure
Your hand on my heart
And it's beating in time
To the sound of your voice
And the look in your eyes
The moment you touch me
All down inside
Is the fire of the newly alive
The passion of old is a children's quick game
Now it's sound of the thunder and feel of the flames
You leave a message so deep in my skin
Where you stop is where I begin
Your hand on my heart
And it's beating in time
To the sound of your voice
And the look in your eyes
The moment you touch me
All down inside
Is the fire
I'm on fire
You are the reason, the time and the face
I am dissolving in oceans of grace
I'd give up a lifetime to keep you from harm
Be your salvation and rescue
And burn bridges to lie in your arms
Your hand on my heart
And it's beating in time
To the sound of your voice
And the look in your eyes
The moment you touch me
All down inside
Is the fire of the newly alive
Your hand on my heart
And it's beating in time
To the sound of your voice
And the look in your eyes
The moment you touch me
All down inside
Is the fire
The waves are breaking on the wall
The queen of roses
Spreads her arms to fly, shed falls
If I had wings I'd cut them down
Live without these dreams
So I could learn to love the ground
'Cause I wanna live inside the world
I wanna act like a real girl
I wanna know I'm not alone
And the dreams are not my home
The future's like a ringing bell
The road to good intentions
Wanders all the way through hell
The note that hangs in the gilded hall
The clanging of my empty rooms
Yeah, I could learn to love them all
'Cause I wanna live inside the world
I wanna act like a real girl
I wanna know I'm not alone
And the dreams are not my home
The waves are breaking like they do
The spiral of churches
Are the last place to enjoy the view
If I had wings I'd use them now
I could follow you
Then hope someone would pull me down
'Cause I wanna live inside the world
I wanna act like a real girl
I wanna know I'm not alone
And the dreams are not my
Dreams are not my
Dreams are not my home
Our little boy is four years old and quite a little man
So we spell out the words we don't want him to understand
Like T-O-Y or maybe S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E
But the words we're hiding from him now
Tear the heart right out of me
Our D-I-V-O-R-C-E becomes final today
Me and little J-O-E will be goin' away
I love you both and this will be pure H-E double L for me
Oh, I wish that we could stop this D-I-V-O-R-C-E
Watch him smile, he thinks it's Christmas
Or his 5th Birthday and he thinks C-U-S-T-O-D-Y spells fun or play
I spell out all the hurtin' words and turn my head when I speak
'Cause I can't spell away this hurt that's drippin' down my cheek
Our D-I-V-O-R-C-E becomes final today
Me and little J-O-E will be goin' away
I love you both and this will be pure H-E double L for me
(Rosanne Cash)
I was a fool to say it was over
I was concerned with my pride
The words are crazy and fall out of place
From this heartache I can't hide
I hear your name in slow conversation
I see your face in the crowd
My heart desires so many things
That my pride just can't allow
I'd close down this heart tonight
Leave without a fight
Say goodbye to your sweet memory
If I can lie in your arms tonight
If I can lie in your arms tonight
Was I the fool to think you would see me
When all I wanted was you
Then I saw your eyes go through those changes
And wondered how you knew
I hear your name in slow conversation
I close my eyes and knew
I'd never find a way to deceive you
I just can't let you go
I'd close down this heart tonight
Leave without a fight
Say goodbye to your sweet memory
If I can lie in your arms tonight
If I can lie in your arms tonight
In the middle of my life
When my fate was sealed and tied
The heavens rain down fire
The earth and moon conspire
To open up my eyes
Make me face my lies
I crawl through an abyss
I struggle and resist
Somehow I break free
Someone becomes me
And when I stand upright
I'm filled with a new light
I'm given one more chance
So I change partners
In this new dance
The moon stays on a course
No mortal will force
The courage to go deep
Is gathered while we sleep
I'm purified by fire
Renewed by my desire
Nothings left to chance
So I change partners
In this new dance
I change partners
In this new dance
(Rosanne Cash)
You showed up on my doorstep late last night
Said he didn't want to fight no more
But going back is near impossible I cried
You should had thought of this before
He said that he was sorry, changed his mind
Would I considered his amends
It's far too late your love has struck me blind
And now I can't go back to him
Now the love I believed in is all but slipped away
But a dream that has no chance will not come true
Even though like children we're caught in our own lies
Darling, can I still believe in you
Memories are easy when they're new
They turn the sorrow to romance
Easier to live with than the truth
Well my heart is sad and I am lonesome
For the only one I love
When shall we meet?
Oh no never till we meet in heaven above
So bury me underneath the willow
Under the weeping willow tree
So that he may know where I am sleeping
And perhaps he'll weep for me
Well he told me that he dearly loved me
Oh how could it be untrue?
Until the angels softly whispered
He will prove untrue to you?
So bury me underneath the willow
Under the weeping willow tree
So that he may know where I am sleeping
And perhaps he?ll weep for me
Well tomorrow was to be our wedding day
But oh my god where can he be?
He's out a courting with another
And no longer cares for me
So bury me underneath the willow
Under the weeping willow tree
So that he may know where I am sleeping
The hills are burning, fields turn to steel
The big house is haunted with what we don't feel
All the streets are empty, no one ever comes around
So you know they won't make a sound
Burn down this town
My lungs are blackened with smoke and sobs
So just be a man and finish the job
And I'll watch you from this distant place I've found
Oh, you know I won't make a sound
Burn down this town
The clapper jail and the co-op board
The garden club and the bedroom door
Sprinkled lawn and the mirrored hall
The Christmas tree, just burn it all
The sky is falling with the ash and mud
They gotta make a promise, yeah, blood to blood
So shut the door and then slowly turn around
And now you know you can't make a sound
Burn down this town
The clapper jail and the co-op board
The garden club and the bedroom door
Sprinkled lawn and the mirrored hall
The Christmas tree, just burn it all
Burn down this town
Do you wanna be honest
Or do you wanna win?
You could have it all
If you could gracefully give in
Like when a martyr go sees a martyr
Lookin' in the mirror makes you cry harder
'Bout your glitterin' ball and chain
In love, in love with your beautiful pain
Excuses and all theories
Peak themselves and die
Even when they don't hold water
You try to keep them safe and dry
An' trade your moan for a positive tone
Reassured by ads about things you own
And so we go through this again
In love, in love with your beautiful pain
If everything went runnin' smoothly
You'd soon lose who you were
Oh, the pain and hurt, for that's your real
So go on, go back to her
You packed up all your troubles
You let me play the bars
An' hiked out to the meadows
And lay down on the fragrant moss
Put down your own tree
Then meticulously built a cross right there
And stared back at me
An climbed up on it again
In love, in love with your beautiful
In love, in love with your beautiful
(Rosanne Cash)
Sometimes it's hard to find words
And sometimes the words seem too hard
Maybe we're feeling insecure
Vecause we're still not used to our parts
But if I sound self-assured
I tell you I know where I stand
That's only something I've learnt
You got to say it again
Say baby, we can be friends
And then tell me something like this
Say darling I loved you on sight
I won't let you be lonesome tonight
You think you're taking a chance
And I'm not so sure I agree
But I'll pretend I understand
If you'll just explain it to me
I don't want to make these demands
I don't want to limit your style
But I wish that you misunderstand
(Rodney Crowell)
In this modern world we're livin' in
The rules ain't like they've ever been
Speakin' of spreading it thin
That's what you do, flashing your soul
That ain't no way to treat your lover
Ain't no way to act with feelings
Baby, better start turnin' 'em down
Now it's a brave new wave we're roarin' in
Hanging out, out on the rock'n'roll fringe
Speaking of running around
All over town, lettin' it show
That ain't no way to treat your lover
Ain't no way to act in public
Baby, you better start turnin' 'em down
Start to sturnin' down
Sire is clear ain't nothin' easy any more
Sure gets cloudy when I look in all directions
Sure is rainin' like this feeling in my heart
Sure is crazy how you're acting
In this latest craze or current trent
Burnin' money every way that you can
Speakin' of going for broke
That's how it is and lettin' it show
That ain't no way to treat your lover
Ain't no way to act with strangers
Baby, you better start turnin' 'em down
Start to turnin' down
Baby, better start turnin'
Baby, better start turnin'
(Rodney Crowell)
I treat him like a stallion
I treat him like a lamb
I treat him like a pot of gold
He treats me like a clown
It's daggers when he looks at me
Bullets when he speaks
Evil how he calls on me
Pretending that he's so weak
He'll be anybody's darling
He'll be anything but mine
He's got all new friends, Hollywood has him
Better off than other people in this world
There are fools to follow him, rearrange him
Changing everything I hoped that I might save
Always just another rainy day away
He needs me but only to hold his hand
Don't like being alone
He holds me but not like a lover can
He wants me but not like I am
He's clever, such a chosen face
Striking at even a glance
So gracious but only with what he wants
Someone was 'round here asking questions
About somebody who looks like you
I said I don't know where you are
Sounded like he was gonna be back someday
So I told her where you are
She's making it all come true this time
She's making it all come true this time
She's making it all come true this time
Got to find the brightness in the soul
Not look outside to find out where we are
Oh, you won't be satisfied, yeah
Until you make possessions of the stars
She's making it all come true this time
She's making it all come true this time
She's making it all come true this time
Someone was 'round here asking questions
About somebody who looks like you
I said I don't know where you are
She said she was gonna be back someday
So I told her where you are
She's making it all come true this time
She's making it all come true this time
She's making it all come true this time
She's making it all come true this time
She's making it all come true this time
AIN'T NO MONEY
(Rodney Crowell)
Everyday now I hear people say
My ship is sailin' could be any day
Any day now it might not feel so blue
My baby tells me stop and look around
If you ain't careful, Hon, you're trouble bound
Run home for cover and you might not find none there
He say there ain't no money in this runnin' around
Can't make money stayin' at home
And there ain't no future in the way that it feels today
Baby there ain't no money
Baby there ain't no money
Baby there ain't no money in the ones that you really love
I try and tell 'em, baby, straight and true
No love or money tells you what to do
You're born to ramble baby that's what I was too
Just breakin' even even if I lose
Ol' lucky seven put his hold on you
I got your number baby any way you move
Baby there ain't no money and that's for sure
Ain't no money behind no doors
And there ain't no trouble that a poor boy won't go through
Baby there ain't no money
Baby there ain't no money
Baby there ain't no money in the ones you really love
If you miss the train I'm on you will know that I am gone
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
A hundred miles a hundred miles a hundred miles a hundred
miles
You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles
Lord I'm one lord I'm two lord I'm three lord I'm four
Lord I'm 500 miles from my home
500 miles 500 miles 500 miles 500 miles
Lord I'm five hundred miles from my home
Not a shirt on my back not a penny to my name
Lord I can't go a-home this a-way
This a-away this a-way this a-way this a-way
Lord I can't go a-home this a-way
If you miss the train I'm on you will know that I am gone
Ten years ago on a cold dark night,
Someone was killed 'neath the town hall lights.
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed,
That the slayer who ran looked a lot like me.
Chorus
She walks these hills, in a long black veil.
She visits my grave, when the night winds wail.
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows, but me
The Judge said son, what is your alibi,
If you were somewhere else, then you won't have to die.
I spoke not a word, though it meant my life,
For I'd been in the arms of my best friends wife.
Chorus
Now the scaffold is high, and eternity's near.
She stood in the crowd, and she'd not a tear.
But some times at night, when the cold wind moans
In a long black veil, she cries over my bones
Chorus
She walks these hills, in a long black veil.
When the cold winds blow, and the night winds wail.
No body knows, no body sees.
We tried to make ourselves pay
For something we've never done
We threw the best parts of life away
On street talk strangers and drugs
And what we really want is love
What we really need is love
I wanna call out your name
I wanna hold out my hand
A woman silent in the mirror tonight
Wants to talk to your mirror man
And what they really want is love
And what they really need is love
We are ships in the night
The water is deep in between
There is reason and we can't find the light
So we sail off into our dreams
And what we really dream is love
And what we really need is love
What we want is love
What we need is love
We tried to make it feel right
In someone else's world
We sat and looked out my window last night
And knew that things had changed with this girl
'Cause what I really found was love
What we really need is love
What we really want is love
What we really need is love
What we want is love
(John R. Cash)
Don't call my name out your window when I'm leaving
I won't even turn my head
Don't send your kinfolk to give me no talking
I'll be gone like I said
Now you've been saying the same old things
That you've been saying all along
Just lay there in your bed
Keep your mouth shut until I'm gone
Don't give me that old familiar cryin' cussin' morning
Understand your man, understand your man
You can give my other suit to the Salvation Army
And anything else I leave behind
I ain't takin' nothin' thay'll slow down my travellin'
While I'm untangling my mind
Now I ain't gonna repat what I said anymore
While I'm breathing air that ain't been breathe before
I'll be gone as a wild goose in winter
Then you'll understand your man
I read about this baby she got beat up by her dad
She was nine months old and he was a full grown man
She may have been learning how to crawl and he put a fist in her face
And the doctor said this baby's gone she can't be replaced
Now you read a lot of things in the daily news
But I'm laying awake at nights wondering what to do
I pray the Lord her soul to keep cause all down here are fast asleep
But I want to say this baby belongs to me and you
So we gotta wake up this baby belongs to me and you
[ guitar ]
Everyday when I wake up in this world and it's spinning out of control
Who's at the wheel seems no one knows
We're all just like a baby frightened and so sad
Feeling beat up by someone who looks like dad
Now you read a lot of things...
That was the summer that followed the spring
The sad anniversary of a thousand old things
I was letting them go
The words of Collette and a strange new perfume
The drenching my senses and filling the room
The heat from my body is the light in our eyes
Word is surrender and then we can fly
We were letting it go
We are blinded to the beauty in our own lives
But hours taken are all that I could get
For five or six hours in the month of July
The summer I read Collette
The time were align and we learnt how to crawl
The bones were prison and memory of old
A word from the past I feel nothing at all
And now I'm letting it go
It's more than survival the lesson, I have learnt
When I found salvation's quite a surprise
Now that was the summer that followed the spring
A new way of feeling a million and one things
We are blinded to the beauty in our own lives
But hours taken are all that I could get
For five or six hours in the month of July
The summer I read Collette
And I found Paris a hundred years late
Calling it sleeping in [Incomprehensible]
My ear to the stone I can hear her sing
[Incomprehensible]
Well, I sold my silver to get myself there
To a room with a candle up three flights of stairs
That was the summer, I let it all go
Filling my body with my heart and my soul
We are blinded to the beauty in our own lives
I was taking all I could get
For five or six hours in the month of July
(Tom T. Hall)
If you love somebody enough
You'll follow wherever they go
That's how I got to Memphis
That's how I got to Memphis
If you love somebody enough
You'll go where your heart wants to go
That's how I got to Memphis
That's how I got to Memphis
I know if you've seen him
You'd tell me cause you're my friend
I've got to find him
And find out the trouble he's in
And if you tell me he's not here
You can follow the trail of my tears
That's how I got to Memphis
That's how I got to Memphis
He'd get mad and he used to say
He'd go back and find her someday
That's how I got to Memphis
That's how I got to Memphis
I haven't eaten a bite
Or slept for three days and nights
That's how I got to Memphis
In a little cabaret in a South Texas border town
Sat a boy and his guitar, and the people came from all
around
And all the girls from there to Austin
Were slippin' away from home and puttin' jewelery in
hock
To take the trip, to go and listen
To the little dark haired boy who played the Tennessee
flat top box
And he would play
Well, he couldn't ride or wrangle, and he never cared
to make a dime
But give him his guitar, and he'd be happy all the time
And all the girls from nine to ninety
Were snapping fingers, tapping toes, and begging him,
don't stop
And hypnotized and fascinated
By the little dark haired boy who played the Tennessee
flat top box
And he would play
And one day he was gone, and no one ever saw him 'round
He'd vanished like the breeze, they forgot him in the
little town
But all the girls still dreamed about him
And hung around the cabaret until the doors were locked
And then one day on the hit parade
Was a little dark haired boy who played the Tennessee
flat top box
(Rosanne Cash - John Leventhal)
It's the ghost of a dream
That awakens me
In the night
When no one's around
But I don't hear the sound
Of those tears falling down
And it's the breath of a kiss
And so much tenderness
That drives my knees to the ground
But we don't hear the sound
Of those tears falling down
There's a river that won't forget
And a wind that gives us breath
But in the cradle of our fears
We sleep without tears
And it's your eyes close to mine
That lets in the light
That shows me where love can be found
But we don't hear the sound
Of those tears falling down
There's a river that won't forget
And a wind that takes our breath
But in the cradle of our fears
We sleep without tears
And it's your eyes close to mine
That lets in the light
That shows me where love can be found
But we don't hear the sound
Of those tears falling down
No we don't hear the sound
Of those tears falling down
You act like you were just born tonight
Face down in a memory but feeling all right
So who does your past belong to today?
Baby, you don't say nothing when you're feeling this way
The girls in the bars thinking, "who is this guy?"
But they don't think nothing when they're telling you lies
You look so careless when they're shooting that bull
Don't you know heartaches are heroes when their pockets are full
Tell me you're trying to cure a seven-year ache
See what else your old heart can take
The boys say, "when is he gonna give us some room"
The girls say, "god I hope he comes back soon"
Everybody's talking but you don't hear a thing
You're still uptown on your downhill swing
Boulevard's empty, why don't you come around?
Baby, what is so great about sleeping downtown?
Plenty of dives to be someone you're not
You say you're looking for something you might've forgot
Don't bother calling to say you're leaving alone
'Cause there's a fool on every corner when you're trying to get home
Just tell 'em you're trying to cure a seven-year ache
See what else your old heart can take
The boys say, "when is he gonna give us some room"
The girls say, "god I hope he comes back soon"
Tell me you're trying to cure a seven-year ache
See what else your old heart can take
The boys say, "when is he gonna give us some room"
There's a cross above the baby's bed, a savior in her dreams
But she was not delivered then, and the baby became me
There's a light inside the darkened room, a footstep on the stair
A door that I forever close, to leave those memories there
So when the shadows link them into an evening sun
Well, first there's summer, then I'll let you in, September, when it comes
I plan to crawl outside these walls, close my eyes and see
And fall into the heart and arms of those who wait for me
I cannot move a mountain now, I can no longer run
I cannot be who I was then, in a way, I never was
Watch the clouds go sailing, I watch the clock and sun
Oh, I watch myself, depending on, September, when it comes
When the shadows link them and burn away the clouds
They will fly me, like an angel, to a place where I can rest
SECOND TO NO ONE
(Rosanne Cash)
I don't want to be the sole survivor
I don't want to close it down
I don't want to know what goes on between you
Whenever I ain't around
I don't want to be the last to hear it
And I don't want to live apart
But I don't want to wear your diamond ring
If you won't give me your heart
I don't think you know how bad you treat me
But I can't live like a whore
She thinks she's got the key to your heart
Now I've got to wait by the door
If I could only learn to make you love me
I'll make you love me like I love you
If I could give what I want to give you
I'd want to give you a heart that's true
I don't want to know how long you're leaving
And I don't want to know why
If I can't lie in your arms this evening
I'll just stay home and cry
I don't want to be second to no one
I don't want to let it be
I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow
But tonight you belong here with me
I don't know if this can last forever
Cause I don't know what I can stand
I can love you like a man should be loved
But I can't love half a man
If I could only learn to make you love me
I'd make you love me like I love you
If I could give you what I want to give you
Don't want to be a star
I don't want to talk through glass
I don't want to check my appearance
In your eyes
I don't need a million bucks
And baby, it don't take much
I don't need to play the princess
All the time
I want to be a real woman
Changin' every day
I want to be a real woman
Real in every way
I want to be a real woman
I don't want to be admired
I don't want to fake my smile
I don't want to use my charm
To disarm you
You don't have to spin your wheels
Oh baby, I know how that feels
You don't have to pass some test
Just to impress me
I want to be a real woman
Changin' every day
I want to be a real woman
Real in every way
I want to be a real woman
Real is how I deal with
What I deal with
Real is how I feel when
I know how I'm feelin'
I don't want to be a man
I just want to be what I am
I don't want to hide my light
So yours keeps shinin'
If you don't want to face the truth
Then you're not gonna like what I do
But you're not gonna make or break me
So don't start tryin'
I want to be a real woman
Changin' every day
I want to be a real woman
Real in every way
This is the place where I made my best mistakes
This is the place even angels don't understand
I've seen the disappointment in her face
And the collection of engagement rings on her right hand
She sits alone apart from the crowd
In a white dress she wears like a question mark
Friends speak of her fondly
Enemies just think out loud
You think you're man enough to please her
And you're fool enough to start
But you're not gonna do a thing to our little angel
There's nothing you're thinkin' tonight that tomorrow won't change
Now the cabaret is frozen
And the laughter comes in cans
And the lonely hearts club clientele
Don't know what to do with their hands
You think that you'll be sweet to her but everybody knows
That you're the marshmallow valentine that got stuck on her clothes
And you're not goinna do a thing to our little angel
There's nothing you're thinkin' tonight that tomorrow won't change
So you mix your drinks and words
You make bad jokes, you make bad time
The floors are there to walk over
The walls are there to climb
You swear you'll never go back again once you're inside
You're never the bridegroom she's always the bride
You're not gonna do a thing to our little angel
There's nothing you're thinkin' tonight that tomorrow won't change
You'll come in a sweetheart and you'll go out a stranger
Well, you try to love her but she's so contrary
Like a chainsaw running through a dictionary
So get your mind off the sweet behind of our little angel
You're not gonna do a thing
You're not gonna do a thing
In the shadow of my Empire
In the dimness of my realm
I am rolling like the heavy thunder
And tolling like a bell
This is how I live outside the body
This is feeling without heart
I am bound to the voice who whispers
Well, this is who you are...
So with pencil and knife
I carve and design
The truth and the crimes
Of My Secret Life
In the shadows where I linger
In the kingdom I command
There is less than you imagine
But more than I can stand
Saints and angels
run for cover
and I am standing here alone
like a newborn on a rolling freight train
And a stranger in our home
So with pencil and knife
The tools true and tried
I carve and describe
My Secret Life
Nothing else is going to satisfy me
Like the way I disappear
Send a messenger to come and find me
So I can get to you from here
with pencil and knife
the tools true and tried
to carve and describe
my secret life
In the shadow of my empire
down a path I can't define
Are the signs to direct you
to my secret life
A cold night and the wind keeps blowin' a cold heart here but no one knows it
I look at you and I see myself down that lonely road
A woman frozen and a man still on fire the crime of fear and the pain and desire
You and me and the mirror between us that begs to explode
No one feels better now no one really tries no one gets to the truth past these eyes
[ dobro ]
Old memories linger still a cup of coffee and a dollar bill
Lay on the table like a fortune waiting for us to read
But no news seeps in today the old blues decide to stay
No passion breaks this train running through my mind
No one feels better now no one really cares no one takes time to look they just stare
No one feels better now no one makes it through
(Rosanne Cash - Rodney Crowell)
Trouble when you're searching
And you ain't so very young
You don't fit into table talk
But you can't hold back your tongue
You have what they all desire
So you must want it too
I'm looking for a corner
To back my heart into
Trouble when they know you
Your face or just your name
They count the times you stumble
When you barely know the game
You know you never asked for this
Someone who looks like you
I'm looking for a corner
To back my heart into
I just want to find while there's still time
Some peace of mind that I can hold on to
I ain't lookin' for no magic door
Then waiting for someone to push me through
Trouble when the ones you love
Don't know how to love you back
You're forever climbing icy walls
Forever falling back
You're not even lying
And they don't believe it's true
I'm looking for a corner
To back my heart into
Trouble when the heartaches
Don't hurt you anymore
There's nothing like the passion
That you felt so long before
You have what they all desire
But you want it to
I'm looking for a corner
Na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
Na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
I sit and count the tears
I have counted everyday since you've been away
It seems like a thousand years
And at na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
Na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
I sit and count the tears
And I have counted all your lies, all your alibis
Now, I'm a girl, believes just what she hears
And at na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
Na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
I sit and count the tears
He's gone and found somebody new
She may be happy now but soon
She'll be counting everyday that he's been away
And it will seem like a thousand years
And at na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
Na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
She'll sit and count the tears
She'll sit and count the tears
She'll sit and count the tears
Na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
Na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
Na, na, na, na, na, na, late at night
Baby can't wait, baby gotta go
Got to do a number on the late, late show
Do a little song, do a little dance
Want some make the best of her big chance
Don't really matter
If she don't or if she do
She's tryin' to make the best of
The hometown blues
I got a friend, got a little girl
Said, she's the best in the whole wide world
Sounds so good, it sounds unreal
It might not last but it's no big deal
Don't really matter
If she don't or if she do
She's tryin' to make the best of
The hometown blues, ooh, ooh, ooh
Baby, save me, save me, save me
Your sweet smile
Honey, I really need for you
To help me kill a little bit o' time
All of the girl rules run with the crowd
They go wild when the lights go down
They got a little money, they live in a dream
They wanna be the queen of every little scene
Don't really matter
If they don't or if they do
Just tryin' to make the best of
The hometown blues, ooh, ooh
Baby, save me, save me, save me
Your sweet smile
Honey, I really need for you
To help me kill a little bit o' time
All of the girl rules run with the crowd
They go wild when the lights go down
They got a little money, they live in a dream
Wanna be the queen of every little scene
Don't really matter
If they don't or if they do
Just tryin' to make the best of
The hometown blues, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh
(J. Fogarty)
Hey look over yonder out in the rain
Soaking wet, fever in my brain
I ain't certain which way to go
But I got to move for sure
Feelin' blue, blue, blue, blue, blue
Feelin' blue, blue, blue, blue, blue
Feelin' blue, blue, blue, blue, blue
I'm feelin' blue, I'm feelin' blue
Hey look over yonder, behind the wall
They're closing in, I'm about to fall
I ain't no coward but I ain't no fool
I'm feeling that in my bones my book is due
Hey look over yonder up in the tree
There's a rope hanging just for me
Without a warning, without a warning
Things are piling up to break me down
Hey look over yonder out in the street
People laughing by walking wasy
I ain't no sinner but I ain't no saint
DOWN ON LOVE
(Gordon Payne - Don White)
You say you like my lovin'
You say you like my style
But you're too quick with your fast talk
And you're too quick with your smile
I don't know what your plan is
Or what you're thinkin' of
I just know you're high on lovin' baby
But you're down on love
You know I like your lovin'
But lovin' ain't enough
I'm the kind that likes to feel it
Not that near love stuff
I don't know what your plan is
Or what you're thinkin' of
I just know you're high on lovin'
But you're down on love
You're down on love
Yes I know the reason why
You're the passin' through type, baby
And I'm just not that kind
I don't know what your plan is
Or what you're thinkin' of
I just know you're high on lovin', baby
But you're down on love
You're down on love
You say you like my lovin'
You said you like my style
But you're too quick with your fast talk
And you're too quick with your smile
I don't know what your plan is
Or what you're thinkin' of
I just know you're high on lovin', baby
But you're down on love
I said I don't know what your plan is
But I don't like givin' up
I just know you're high on something, baby
But you're down on love
In every woman and man lies the seed of the fear
Of just how alone are all who live here
Denying the fear is the name of the game
To stare at the fear is going insane
Forgiving the fear is one up on Cane
Is to dance with the tiger
And laugh at the rain
Don't give me your life, I have one of my own
It was a brilliant idea inventing the home
Creatures of habit, American fools
Reaching for stars while we're standing on stools
Letting it go is jumping the train
Is to dance with the tiger
Letting it go though we won't be the same
Is to dance with the tiger
Letting it go is the name of the game
Is to dance with the tiger
Rosanna, baby come on
It was a black Cadillac drove you away
Everybody's talkin' but they don't have much to say
It was a black sky of rain none of it fell
One of us gets to go to heaven, one has to stay here in hell
Now it's a lonely world
Guess it always was
Minus you
And minus blood, my blood
It was a black Cadillac like one you used to drive
Now you were always rollin' but those wheels burn up your life
Oh, it's a black heart of pain that I'm wearin', suits me just fine
Oh, there was nothin' I could do for you when you were still alive
Yeah, it's a lonely world
Just a numbers game
Well, a hundred years
Will find me feelin' just the same
Yeah, it's a lonely world
I guess it always was
Minus you
There are no lyrics to this track. It is intentionally blank, with each of the 71 seconds representing one of the years that the artist's father, John R. "Johnny" Cash, lived. Has no one else figured this out yet?
I'd give a lifetime baby
To see you smile
If you could give your troubles over
For just a little while
And look at the truth
It's right here staring at you
Oh, angels bow when you walk by
And the rest of us here have always known why
[Chorus:]
Cause the soul takes it's blows and it does not re-veal
And the heart opens slow and it takes time to heal
But you can let go, It'll all turn to gold
My sweet child of steel
And I watch you walk through fire
When clear water runs near
I watch your heart break open wide
A heart I hold so dear
But look at the truth
It could burn a hole right through you
Oh, angels bow and cover their eyes
And the rest of us here could just break down and cry
Oooh, my life is in black and white Like an old-time picture show Yes in my life is just like The plot you never know-oh-oh
But I have seen the rainbow That's why you feel so grey Yeah I have seen that's how I know That the scenes and shades change day-by-day
Oooh, my life is in black and white But the focus out of view Well my life is just like A scene without a cue
But I have seen the rainbow That's why you feel so grey Yeah I have seen that's how I know That the scenes from life change day-by-day
I've got your picture, you gave to me
And it's signed, "With love" just like it used to be
Only thing different, only thing new
I've got your picture, she's got you
I've got the records we used to share
And they still sound the same when you were here
Only thing different, only thing new
I've got your records, he's got you
I've got your memory or has it got me
Really don't know but I know it won't let me be
Won't let me be
I've got your memory or has it got me
Really don't know but I know it won't let me be
Won't let me be
I've got your class ring that proves you care
And it still looks the same as when you gave it, dear
Only thing different, only thing new
I've got your class ring, he's got you
Only thing different, only thing new
I've got your picture, who's got you
Who's got you, who's got you, who's got you, who's got you?
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know, who's got you?
He or she? Gender bender to me
I have seen the morning burning golden on the mountain in the skies Aching with the feeling of the freedom of an eagle when she flies Turning on the world, the way she smiled upon my soul as I lay dying Healing as the colors in the sunshine and the shadows of her eyes
Loving her was easier than anything I'll ever do again Coming close together With a feeling that I'd never known before in my time She ain't ashamed to be a woman or afraid to be a friend I don't know the answer to the easy way she opened every door in my mind But dreaming was as easy as believing it was never gonna end Loving her was easier than anything I'll ever do again
Fancy meeting you here, tonight
It's such a small world, New York ain't my town
I don't come around, but once in a while
This is such a surprise to see you
Girl, your looking so good; it's been a long time
Since you've crossed my mind
Just one night on the town,
I came looking around for something to do
Just a change of my plans on leaving,
And I stay around and I run into you
Which just goes to prove it's such a small world
I've lived alone for awhile
It feels like I've gone out of style
You and me will always be
Just looking for something that's already happened
Years go by but you and I don't have to look beyond today
Maybe just for tonight
We can turn out the light
Lay your heart on the line
Let go of your mind
You know just what to say
You know just what to do
You still look like the day when I first met you
I'll be gone once again come morning
Like I've always done
But to see you tonight
Makes everything right, it's such a small world
I'm coming home today, to hear the trucks roar,
And lock my front door, and stare into your face.
Coming home today, to sleep in my bed,
And clear round my head and wander round this place.
[Chorus:]
So don't put my love on your list of burdens,
When I'm bringing it home to you.
Don't put my love on your list of burdens,
'Cos I'm bringing it home to you.
I walked around this world, bathed in neon,
And needing no one, empty and disturbed.
You ran around this world. It nearly killed me,
But you can fill me till I cry like a little girl.
[Chorus]
If I can just get there,
Lay the whole damn world at your feet.
I'd do anything to please you baby,
To save yourself for me.
[Chorus]
[Instrumental]
Heartache number one was when you left me
I never knew that I could hurt this way
Heartache number two was when you come back again
You came back and never meant to stay
Now I've got heartaches by the number, troubles by the score
Everyday you love me less, each day I love you more
Yes, I've got heartaches by the number, a love that I can't win
But the day that I stop counting that's the day my world will end
Heartache number three was when you called me
And said that you were coming back to stay
With hopeful heart I waited for your knock on the door
I waited but you must have lost your way
Now I've got heartaches by the number, troubles by the score
And everyday you love me less, each day I love you more
Yes, I've got heartaches by the number, a love that I can't win
But the day that I stop counting that's the day my world will end
Motherless children have a hard time
When the mother is gone
Motherless children have a hard time
When the mother is gone
Motherless children have a hard time
There's all that weeping and all that crying
Motherless children have a hard time
When the mother is gone
Father will do the best he can
When the mother is gone
Father will do the best he can
When the mother is gone
Father will do the best he can
But there are so many things he just don't understand
Motherless children have a hard time
When the mother is gone
People say a sister will do
When the mother is gone
People say a sister will do
When the mother is gone
People say a sister will do
But she'll get married, turn her back on you
Motherless children have a hard time
When the mother is gone
Friends will treat you like your mother will
When your mother is gone
Friends will treat you like your mother will
When your mother is gone
Friends will tell you what to do
Then they'll turn their back on you
Motherless children have a hard time
Everything was mine
But it's long stripped away
I stand here naked as the stars
And silent as a grave
If you see who I really am
Or you still wana stay
There's a danger in this love
And I wana be that grave
Bells and roses
A sign of departure
But I love them just the same
Bells and roses
A sign of survival
On the door into this pain
Now I'll go
And if you say I must
But I rather let it go
The people I will never trust
And the things that I can't know
Kiss you until we turn to stone
I'll fight you till we're blind
But you love me when you're left alone
And it makes me wana die
Bells and roses
If they wake up the senses to
Remind me who I am
Bells and roses
The gifts of the spirit shall not be squandered on one man
Everything was mine
But it's long stripped away
Will you love me if I'm naked
Or I'm silent as a grave
You don't have to answer now
But you might learn to pray
And I'll step down off this cross
Into a life that I can change
Bells and roses
They fill up the silence
In the place where he once laid
Bells and roses
A sign of survival
And the price I had to pay
Bells and roses
Silver wings shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight
They're taking you away and leaving me lonely
Silver wings slowly fading from sight
Don't leave me, I cried
Don't take that airplane ride
Then you locked me out of your life
Left me standing here behind
Silver wings shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight
They're taking you away and leaving me lonely
Silver wings slowly fading from sight
Don't leave me, I cried
Don't take that airplane ride
Then you locked me out of your life
Left me standing here behind
Silver wings shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines headed somewhere in flight
They're taking you away and leaving me lonely
Silver wings slowly fading from sight
I don't want to
Spoil the party, so I'll go
I would hate my
Disappointment to show
There's nothing for me here
So I will disappear
If he turns up while I'm gone
Please let me know
I've had a drink or two
And I don't care
There's no fun in what I do
If he's not there
I wonder what went wrong
I've waited far too long
I think I'll take a walk
And look for him
Though tonight he's made me sad
I still love him
If I find him, I'll be glad
I still love him
I don't want to
Spoil the party, so I'll go
I would hate my
Disappointment to show
There's nothing for me here
So I will disappear
If he turns up while I'm gone
Please let me know
Though tonight he's made me sad
I still love him
If I find him, I'll be glad
I still love jim
I've had a drink or two
And I don't care
There's no fun in what I do
If he's not there
I wonder what went wrong
I've waited far too long
I think I'll take a walk
You don't know me,
You can only say my name
Pictures of me paint,
I can not say
I'm only till business to you
Some sort of silly fool
Fool that I am, I forgive you
Because I love you
Cause I don't know where to begin
To say the words you need me to say
You don't know me,
Not like you think that you do
Not thinking of me,
I'm thinking of you
So just let me say these few words
From the very pit of my heart
Troublesome faith that we are
You know that I love you
From the moment I laid eyes on you
Can't we find a new á¹—lace to start
You don't know me, that's all I have to say
As my understanding drifts away
Because I love you
Belly to belly and skin to skin
My heart is open
Now won't you please come in
You don't know me
You don't know me
You don't know me
Blue moon out my window, guess this means goodnight
And you come in and start right in not treating me right
Misery is a ball and all its company
I'll play the victim for you honey, but not for free
I run into that heartache just like a wall
And act like nothing happened to me, nothing at all
Lately I'm amazed at how blind we can be
Lately even dreaming feels like old reality
What would I give to be a diamond in your eyes again
What would I give to bring back those old times
What did I say to make your cold heart bleed this way
Maybe I'll just go away today
And I don't care who's waiting at my front door
You know that life don't hold no glamour anymore
Oh, how can it all look so right and feel so wrong
I'll play the victim for you honey, but not for long
What would I give to be a diamond in your eyes again
What would I give to bring back those old times
What did I say to make your past turn out this way
Maybe I'll just go away today
Maybe I'll just go away
Maybe I'll just go away
Maybe I'll just go away to stay
Maybe I'll just go away
Maybe I'll just go away
I don't know what you feel no more when you look in my eyes
I know I'm the same girl who walked out that door,
But I'm brand new inside,
Maybe what I'm sayin' ain't true after all,
I take it a minute at a time,
Maybe all I want is to hold you right now with no compromise,
This is the real me, breakin' down at last,
Hey, it's the real me, crawlin' out of my past,
Baby, the real me, wants the real you, so bad
The numbness overcomes me now like alcohol and fear,
And I want to crawl inside you, baby, but I don't want you near,
A woman's her own mystery, not a shadow of her man,
But I'm not a queen inside a mirror no more,
I'm not a guard to hold hand,
This is the real me, breakin' down at last,
Hey, it's the real me, crawlin' out of my past,
Baby, the real me, wants the real you, so bad
Well, I've got no answers now,
And I don't expect them of you
Thank God for second chances, baby,
Cause there's something I can give to you,
And it's the real me, breakin' down at last,
Hey, it's the real me, crawlin' out of my past,
Baby, the real me, wants the real you, so bad,

If she'd only knew what was in my head
Why can't she see my heart is breaking
If she'd only knew what I was thinking
She'd be mine if it weren't for him.
Still I can't learn to live without
So many times I dreamed I had her
See your face would be my destiny
I call her name when I lay down
Her jealous heart is all I found.
Now I won't take what you can give to me
If it weren't for him then you'd be mine.
--- Instrumental ---
This lonely place is all I hope to find
If he'd only knew what I was thinking
If he'd only knew what was in my head
Why can't he see my heart is breaking
He'd be mine if it weren't for him.
Driving down in highway sixteen I thought I heard a lover scream There was something on the windshield couldn't see a thing That's when I heard the siren sing
And there's time to wonder what she said Green, yellow, yellow to red Time to count those voices in your head Green, yellow, yellow to red She's got cups for the blood and butter for the bread Green, yellow, yellow to red So don't drive so fast these brakes are bad
In through the outside out through the in Around the curve into a spin I went over the edge at Leopard's Bend Who's gonna help you now my friend
What kinda girl am I really am? I love some turkey but I don't eat lamb No sweet potato but I do like ham What kinda girl am I really am?
What kinda girl am I really I? I kept my jacket but I lost my tie I'll tell ya truly that I sometimes lie What kinda girl am I really I?
What kinda girl am I really who? Don't wear pajamas and I don't sniff glue I'm Mississippi, got the New York blues What kinda girl am I really who?
What kinda girl am I really what? I might be leavin' but the door ain't shut I'm here for lovin' but I ain't no slut What kinda girl am I really what?
What kinda girl am I really am? I love some turkey but I don't eat lamb No sweet potato but I do like ham What kinda girl am I? Am I really am?
At my door the leaves are falling
The cold wild wind will come
Sweethearts walk by together
And I still miss someone
I go out on a party and look for a little fun but I find the darkened corner
Cause I Still Miss Someone
Though I never got over those blue eye's
I see them everywhere
I miss those arms that me
when all the love was there
I wonder if she's sorry for leaving what she begun there's someone for me somewhere And I Still Miss Someone
though I never got over those blue eyes
I see them everywhere I miss those arms
when all the love was there
Come on, people, come on, children Come on down to the glory river. Gonna wash you up, and wash you down, Gonna lay the devil down, gonna lay that devil down. I got fury in my soul, fury's gonna take me to the glory goal In my mind I can't study war no more. Save the people, save the children, save the country now
Come on, people come on, children Come on down to the glory river Gonna wash you up and wash you down Gonna lay the devil down, gonna lay that devil down
Come on people! Sons and mothers Keep the dream of the two young brothers Gonna take that dream and ride that dove
We could build the dream with love, I know, We could build the dream with love, I know, We could build a dream with love, children, We could build the dream with love, oh people, We could build the dream with love, I know, We could build the dream with love.
Come on, people! Come on, children! There's a king at the glory river
Oh give to me a winding stream It must not be too wide Where waving leaves from maple trees Do meet from either side The water must be deep enough To float a small canoe With no one else but you
Do not disturb my waking dream The splendor of that winding stream Flower in my canoe, his eyes they looked me through That someone there with golden hair Is very much like you
The sparkling trout beneath the bank Does leave his hiding place Kingfisher from the bough above So eager to give to chase The spreading branches over head The sunlight peeping through Reminding me of you
Come all ye fair and tender ladies Take warning how you court your men They're like a star a summer morning They first appear and then they're gone
They'll tell to you some loving story And they'll make you think that they love you well And away they'll go and court some other And leave you there in grief to dwell
I wish I was on some tall mountain Where the ivy rocks were black as ink I'd write a letter to my false true lover Whose cheeks are like the morning pink
I wish I was a little sparrow And I had wings to fly so high I'd fly to the arms of my false true lover And when he'd ask, I would deny
We speak but the words we say mean nothing.
We smile but the smiles we give are wanting.
We look upon each other's eyes, no spark
No glow, no real signs, but we both know
This is all for show
Until that sometime, somewhere,
We could show the world we have each other
Sometime, somewhere we need not hide out feelings,
We just keep on believing that we both have the time together
Sometime and somewhere, our lips would be free at last
You say the words we've hungered to say
And we won't have to worry, we smile we won't say sorry
One look and we have cast our fears aside.
Sometime, that sometime will turn to forever, for all time.
Somewhere, our somewhere would not be just one place,
But everywhere
Until that sometime, somewhere,
We just have to be content with stealing glances
Somehow, content with saying nothing, smiles that are
Always wanting. Though deep inside it hurts
Because we know that our love, like love,
Is what it is, it's what we got
Our love, like love will have to wait
If I were a man. I'd be so sweet. I'd give me everything I need. I'd be so glad to go this deep, If I were a man.
If I were the moon, I'd hang so low. I'd bring sweet love to all below. I wouldn't change and hurt you so, If I were the moon.
Well it goes on and on forever, and there's just no way to know. I can change just like the weather, I'm solid as a stone.
If I were the wind, I'd blow and shout. I'd clean our souls and bodies out. I'd shake the memories from this house, If I were the wind.
If I were God, I guess I'd know. I guess my friend's would tell me so. It would be a heavy line to tow, If I were God.
Well, it goes on and on forever, and there's just no way to know. I can change just like the weather. I'm as solid as a stone.
Repeat last verse.
If I were a man, I'd be so sweet. I'd give me everything I need. I'd be so glad to this deep. I'd change the way the whole world thinks.
I stand here by the Western Wall
maybe a little of that wall
stands inside of us all
I shove my prayers in the cracks
I got nothing to lose
No one to answer back
All these years I've brought up for review
I wasn't taught this, but I learned something new
I had to answer a distant call
At the Western Wall
I've got a heart full of fear
and I offer it up
on this altar of tears
Red dust settles deep in my skin
I don't know where it stops
and where I begin
It's a crumbling pile of broken stones
it ain't much but it might be home
if I ever loved a place at all
it's the Western Wall
I don't know if God was ever a man
But if She was, I think I understand
Why He found a place to break his fall
You don't want no more heartaches
And I don't want no teardrops
What else is love to talk about
Cause I ain't yours you ain't mine
The song don't fit and the words don't rhyme
Old memories keep standing in the way
You lost her I lost him
Two old hearts just won't love again
We don't need no memories hanging round
Since she's gone it don't seem right
Better off left alone at night
I ain't faking feelings far away
The days just come and dissapear
You can't talk when I don't hear
It don't make no difference anyway
I lost her, you lost him
Two old hearts just won't love again
I don't need no memories hanging 'round
I want her you need him
Two old fires won't burn again
We don't need no memories hanging 'round
I'm on your new wave length
I know what you must think
I've never felt like this
I can't resist, Knowing love like this
I can't resist
In from the outside at last
I've lived alone in your past
I've known no love like this
I can't resist, Knowing love like this
I cant resist (I love the way you cast your spell)
I can't resist (No other ever looked so good)
I can't resist (The tender way you show your charm)
I can't resist
This heart no longer my own
Without no neutral zone
Within your sweet caress
I cant resist, Knowing love like this
I can't resist, knowing love like this
The lights in the harbor don't shine for me
I'm like a lost ship adrift on the sea
Sea of heartbreak, lost love, loneliness
Memories of your caress so divine
I wish you were mine again my dear on this sea of tears
Sea of heartbreak
How did I lose you? Oh, where did I fail?
Why did you leave me always to sail?
Sea of heartbreak, lost love, loneliness
Memories of your caress so divine
I wish you were mine again my dear on this sea of tears
Sea of heartbreak
Oh, what I'd give to sail back to shore
Back to your arms once more
Come to my rescue, oh, come here to me
Take me and keep me away from the sea
Sea of heartbreak, lost love, loneliness
Memories of your caress so divine
I wish you were mine again my dear on this sea of tears
Sea of heartbreak
Sea of heartbreak, lost love, loneliness
Memories of your caress so divine
I wish you were mine again my dear on this sea of tears
Sea of heartbreak, sea of heartbreak
If I was stoned and on my own maybe I could take it When you leave me all alone But you know I’m only human and it hurts me when you’re gone
If my heart was like a diamond, just as cold as ice When I see you with another, you know I might not be surprised But you know I’m only human and I’ve got to pay the price
Oh the blue sky reminds me of the place you put me in You know I’m only human time and time again
If I could make it any better I would be no matter what I stay inside alone and suffer and give up everything I’ve got But you know I’m only human and you treat me like I’m not
Oh the blue sky reminds...
