"Eumaeus" for James Joyce, from the Ulysses-cycle of 18 wooden sculptures

German and English annotations: Die Holzskulpturen Jede Olivenholzskulptur bezieht sich auf eine Episode von Ulysses, sei es auf Joyces Text selbst, sei es auf die Odyssee von Homer, die der irische Modernist zur Strukturierung seines Textes nutzte – und außerdem jeweils auf ein ausgewähltes Zitat aus Joyces Episoden. Die bildhauerischen Analogien erschöpfen sich jedoch nicht darin, erzählerische Inhalte nachzubilden. So wie Joyces Text sich aus Abfolgen von Sprachelementen zusammensetzt (Sätzen, Überschriften, Gedankenfetzen, Ausrufen, Fragen, Zitaten etc.), entstehen die Skulpturen aus räumlichen Elementen wie – zuvorderst – Linien, der Entsprechung des Satzes, aber auch aus Falten, Flächen, Rinnen, Höhlungen, Rundungen, Drehungen, Volumina oder Zuschneidungen ebenso wie aus Maserungen, Texturen, Rauheiten (wegen des bewussten Verzichts auf Schliff), Verwitterungsmerkmalen und anderen Holzcharakteristika. Diese bleiben auch in Abgüssen, etwa in Bronze, erhalten. The Wooden Sculptures Each olive sculpture is related to one episode of Ulysses, be it to Joyce’s text itself, be it to the Odyssey by Homer, which the Irish Modernist used to structure his texts – and also to one quotation selected from each of Joyce’s episodes. But the sculptural analogies are not limited to the depiction of narrative contents. Just as Joyce’s text is constituted by successions of linguistic elements (sentences, headlines, disjointed thoughts, exclamations, questions, quotations, etc.) so do the sculptures emerge from spatial elements such as, primarily, lines – the sentence equivalent –, but also from folds, gutters, cavings, planes, curves, turnings, volumes or cuttings, and, additionally, from grains, textures, coarsenesses (due to the deliberate abstention from grinding), characteristics of weathering and other wooden traits. To a large extent these are preserved also in casts such as in bronze. Xylotomische Palimpseste: Die Bedeutung des Zyklus So besitzt der „Ulysses-Zyklus -- 18 Skulpturen für Joyce“ seine Einheit im gemeinsamen Ausgangsmaterial, im gemeinsamen Geruch, in der Vielfalt der eingesetzten Elemente und in der identischen Schnitztechnik, ohne Schnitzeisen, mit verschiedenen Schnitzscheiben, Kettensäge und anderen Sägen. Dabei finden die vielfältig organisch gewachsenen und teils aus Verwitterung hervorgegangenen Charakteristika des Holzes respektierten Eingang in das Werk. Diese Eigenschaften, die dem semiotisch reichen, geschichtlichen Abgrund jedes eigentümlichen Stückes Holz entspringen, liefern das Fundament des späteren Eingriffs. Während des Schnitzens und im Schnitt in das jeweils spezifische Holz, in der Xylotomy, entstehen Palimpseste, in denen sich dies vorgefundene Material in seiner Textur mit der Gestaltung überlagert, so dass im Bezug zu Homer und Joyce daraus neue Möglichkeiten und Bedeutungen hervorbrechen, ohne die im Holz schon angefachte Bedeutungsflamme auszulöschen. Für den Betrachter oder die Betrachterin trägt all dies gemeinsam mit dem je eigenen Bewusstseins- und Erfahrungshorizont zur Modulierung der Bedeutungen der Einzelskulpturen und des gesamten Zyklus bei. Xylotomic palimpsests: The meaning of the cycle Therefore, the unity of the “Ulysses Cycle – 18 Olive Sculptures for Joyce“ consists in the common material at the outset, the common scent, in the multiplicity of elements mobilized, and in the identical carving technique, without carving knives, but with various carving discs, chain saw and other saws. In the course of this work the manifold, organically grown characteristics of the wood, having partly emerged from weathering, are respected to enter the work. These qualities, emerging from the semiotically rich abyss of history of each individual piece of wood, supply the foundation basis for the later intervention. During the carving and in the course of cutting into each peculiar piece of wood, in xylotomy, palimpsests emerge, in which, the textured material found overlaps with design so that, with reference to Joyce and Homer new possibilities and meanings break forward, without completely extinguishing the flame of meaning already stoked up in the wood. For the viewer all this, together with his or her individual horizon of consciousness and experience contributes to the modulation of the meanings of the individual sculptures and the full cycle.
