In this meeting I will be discussing a topic that may get you some extra credit on your next science exam, Occam's Razor. Occam's razor is a problem solving technique that has helped detectives and scientists alike deduce solutions to the unknown with far more certainty. At first glance, this tool can seem very complex and hard to understand, but by learning a few clever rules, you can not only start seeing through poorly constructed theories - but start making better theories yourself!

Forbes 2015-02-11WIN: ... They ignored Occam's razor - the problem-solving principle in which the simplest explanation is the most plausible one.
Philadelphia Daily News 2015-02-03Occam's razor (also written as Ockham's razor, Latin lex parsimoniae) is the law of parsimony, economy or succinctness. It is a principle urging one to select among competing hypotheses that which makes the fewest assumptions and thereby offers the simplest explanation of the effect.
The principle is often incorrectly summarized as "other things being equal, a simpler explanation is better than a more complex one." In practice, the application of the principle often shifts the burden of proof in a discussion. The razor asserts that one should proceed to simpler theories until simplicity can be traded for greater explanatory power. The simplest available theory need not be most accurate. Philosophers point out also that the exact meaning of simplest may be nuanced.
Bertrand Russell offers a particular version of Occam's Razor: "Whenever possible, substitute constructions out of known entities for inferences to unknown entities."
Occam's razor is attributed to the 14th-century English logician, theologian and Franciscan friar Father William of Ockham (d'Okham), although the principle was known earlier.Ptolemy stated "We consider it a good principle to explain the phenomena by the simplest hypothesis possible", while phrases such as "It is vain to do with more what can be done with fewer" and "A plurality is not to be posited without necessity" were commonplace in 13th-century scholastic writing. The words attributed to Occam, entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem (entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity), are absent in his extant works. Indeed, Ockham's contribution seems to be to restrict the operation of this principle in matters pertaining to miracles and God's power: so, in the Eucharist, a plurality of miracles is possible, simply because it pleases God.
Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American composer, singer-songwriter, electric guitarist, recording engineer, record producer and film director. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa wrote rock, jazz, orchestral and musique concrète works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. Zappa produced almost all of the more than 60 albums he released with the band The Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist. While in his teens, he acquired a taste for percussion-based avant-garde composers such as Edgard Varèse and 1950s rhythm and blues music. He began writing classical music in high school, while at the same time playing drums in rhythm and blues bands; he later switched to electric guitar.
He was a self-taught composer and performer, and his diverse musical influences led him to create music that was often impossible to categorize. His 1966 debut album with The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, combined songs in conventional rock and roll format with collective improvisations and studio-generated sound collages. His later albums shared this eclectic and experimental approach, irrespective of whether the fundamental format was one of rock, jazz or classical. His lyrics—often humorously—reflected his iconoclastic view of established social and political processes, structures and movements. He was a strident critic of mainstream education and organized religion, and a forthright and passionate advocate for freedom of speech, self-education, political participation and the abolition of censorship.
This is alright
Will you ever know
Just how far you'd go?
Will you ever say to me...
This is alright
Will you take your turn?
Is your lesson learned?
Will you ever think to yourself...
This is alright
To much antidote
Just open your throat
Will you ever know you're alright
This is alright
Will you ever know
Just how far you'd go?
Holy roller
It's your reality
I've seen the people that they've branded
They always come out open handed
Come to the mother-ship -- it's landing
They're going to give us what we want
Open your eyes
Push yourself inside
Contemplate all of your senses
Tell them what you want to lose
They'll just spit in your face
Push you back in your place
Concentrate all of your answers
Tell them what you think you know
100 million miles they chased us
A paragon of nameless faces
Some say they see the coming changes
They're going to give us what we want
Open your eyes
Push yourself inside
Contemplate all of your senses
Tell them what you want to lose
They'll just spit in your face
Push you back in your place
Concentrate all of your answers
Tell them what you think you know
They're going to give us what we want
Holy roller, it's your reality
Are you tied down and in locks?
Held up and face fact
Holy roller, it's your reality
Can you taste this, the spaces?
Embrace the sexes
Have you seen what's inside your mind?
Have you been fucking your own kind?
Have you been writing on the wall?
Have you seen anything at all?
Open your eyes
Push yourself inside
Contemplate all of your senses
Tell them what you want to lose
They'll just spit in your face
Push you back in your place
Concentrate all of your answers
Tell them what you think you know
Under the sun
Under your self
Under the sightings of your side
Under your cross
Under the gun
Under the meaning of your life
