A U.S. official says federal investigators have now connected the Sony Pictures Entertainment Incorporated hacking to North Korea, and are expected to make an announcement in the near future. Until Wednesday, the Obama administration had been saying it was not immediately clear who might have been responsible for the computer break-in. The unidentified hackers had demanded that Sony cancel its upcoming release of the movie The Interview--a comedy that included a gruesome scene depicting the assassination of North Korea's leader. On Wednesday, Sony canceled the Dec. 25th release after the hackers had released sensitive corporate files stolen in the break-in. http://news.yahoo.com/ap-source-us-probe-links-nkorea-sony-hacking-232846816--politics.html http://www.wochit.com

"The blow that the hacking attack has dealt Sony is spreading beyond the entertainment corporation itself to theater chains and movie goers alike. And the financial toll is adding up too. Threats of violence against movie theaters. The New York premiere of "The Interview" canceled. Leaks of thousands more private emails. Lawsuits by former employees that could cost tens of millions in damages. The fallout from the Sony Pictures Entertainment hack that began four weeks ago exploded Tuesday after the shadowy group calling themselves Guardians of Peace escalated their attack beyond corporate espionage and threatened moviegoers with violence reminiscent of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001." Antarctic photo science archive unlocked. Aerial photos from the 1940s and 1950s are being used to probe the climate history of the Antarctic Peninsula. UK scientists are comparing the images with newly acquired data sets to assess the changes that have occurred in some of the region's 400-plus glaciers. The old and modern information has to be very carefully aligned if it is to show up any differences reliably. And that is a big challenge when snow and ice obscure ground features that might otherwise act as visual anchors. But the researchers from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), Newcastle University and University of Gloucestershire believe they are cracking the problem. "We want to use these pictures to work out volume and mass-balance changes in the glaciers through time," explained Dr Lucy Clarke from the University of Gloucestershire. "There are tens of thousands of these historical images, held by the British Antarctic Survey and the US Geological Survey. "So, they've long been around, but it's only now that we've had the capability to extract the 3D data from them." Dr Clarke has been presenting the work at this week's American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting in San Francisco. The Antarctic Peninsula - the northernmost extent of the White Continent which stretches up towards South America - has experienced quite dramatic warming in recent decades. The fronts of many of its glaciers have quite obviously retreated, and several of the marine-terminating ice streams have even seen their floating shelves disintegrate. But getting at the volume and mass changes in the glaciers has been a thorny issue. Satellites are used to track such trends today but their record spans only a few decades. The archive of aerial photos, on the other hand, goes back to the 1940s, and it represents an extraordinary account of the pioneering days of polar exploration. The men who ventured forth in their planes to capture pictures of the peninsula's rugged ice-scape took huge risks, with none of the back-up that modern expeditions can count on. "They had no idea what they were flying into because no-one had ever been there before," said Dr Clarke. "And all the photographs, they would develop using nearby glacial stream water at the base camp they set up," she told BBC News. Dr Pauline Miller from Newcastle University added: "The 1940s were just about flying to see what they could find, but by the 1950s it was much more systematic - for topographic mapping purposes. It was all about staking a claim in Antarctica when nations were becoming more competitive." That these old images still have scientific value in the 21st Century is down to novel techniques that are able to precisely position the pictures using newly created accurate, modern-day elevation models of the peninsula. The team is using the latest optical satellite data to do this, as well as modern aerial photos acquired by BAS planes equipped with GPS. Fundamental to these techniques is finding visual cues in the ice-scape that allow historical and current information to be married up. "These visual cues have got to have some kind of rock; white areas of snow are no good to us because obviously they can change and they're not easy to identify. We need stable areas like mountain peaks," explained Dr Clarke. The team's approach is to use a large number of glaciers spread across the peninsula to try to get some sense of the changes that have occurred through time, as well as pulling out detailed profiles on a small selection of individual glaciers. The project is not yet complete, but already some interesting findings are starting to emerge. These include the observation that many glaciers appear to have thickened at the rear, over higher elevations, even as their fronts have retreated. "You can see there has been widespread glacier retreat across the Antarctic Peninsula; you can see that very easily in the photography. But somewhat surprisingly we're finding accumulation on the upper parts of the glaciers. It's not enough to combat [the mass loss], but it means you do have this kind of dual reaction through time of steepening and accumulation at the rear and dramatic retreat and thinning at the front." Why and how this is occurring will be explored by ice sheet modellers at BAS in the next stage of the project, says Dr Miller. "Together with the patterns we are finding, this will allow us to translate what has happened in the past and use that to calibrate and validate models so that they can in turn forecast the contribution of ice loss from the Antarctic Peninsula with respect to processes such as sea level rise. "We need to understand what's happened in the past, going back over multiple decades, to give us the foundation to anchor these models and, in so doing, reduce the uncertainties associated with them."

At the epicentre of the outbreak is Kailahun, a town where aid workers are risking their lives to deal with the crisis. "We are now going to the house, and the volunteers - the Dead Body Management Team - they will proceed with the burial", explains a Red Cross worker. His boiler suited unit is responding to the unexplained death of a middle aged man. The body must be treated with all the precautions afforded to an Ebola patient. Informing the locals of what is happening to the deceased diffuses tension, and helps to defeat the fear and paranoia spreading among the shocked communities. "There's a lot of beliefs in black magic and those traditional beliefs, so people often explain things through witchcraft and curses", says Dr Richard Broome. It is up to brave volunteers and local medics to educate communities afflicted by the brutal disease. With the number of confirmed deaths increasing, it is important to focus on the few survivors who pull through the virus' 21 day cycle. The individuals and NGOs fighting and dying with their patients are now desperate for a concerted international response. An ultra-high-resolution NASA computer model has given scientists a stunning new look at how carbon dioxide in the atmosphere travels around the globe. Plumes of carbon dioxide in the simulation swirl and shift as winds disperse the greenhouse gas away from its sources. The simulation also illustrates differences in carbon dioxide levels in the northern and southern hemispheres and distinct swings in global carbon dioxide concentrations as the growth cycle of plants and trees changes with the seasons. The carbon dioxide visualization was produced by a computer model called GEOS-5, created by scientists at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office. The visualization is a product of a simulation called a “Nature Run.” The Nature Run ingests real data on atmospheric conditions and the emission of greenhouse gases and both natural and man-made particulates. The model is then left to run on its own and simulate the natural behavior of the Earth’s atmosphere. This Nature Run simulates January 2006 through December 2006. While Goddard scientists worked with a “beta” version of the Nature Run internally for several years, they released this updated, improved version to the scientific community for the first time in the fall of 2014. Al-Qaida-linked Attack on Houthi in Yemen Kills at Least 15
Al-Qaida-linked Attack on Houthi in Yemen Kills at Least 15
  • Order:
  • Duration: 4:18
  • Updated: 28 Sep 2014
A suicide bomber linked to al-Qaida drove a car laden with explosives into a hospital used as a base by Yemen's Shi'ite Muslim Houthi movement on Sunday, killing at least 15 people, various sources said. The attack took place in the town of Majzar in Maarib province, east of the capital Sana’a, militant, tribal and local sources said. Houthi fighters seized Sana’a on September 21 after four days of fighting with soldiers loyal to the Sunni Muslim Islah party. They have since refused to leave the capital, despite an agreement they signed with President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to make them a part of the government. "Dozens of dead and wounded from the rejectionist Houthis in a martyrdom operation by Ansar al-Sharia using a booby-trapped car in Maarib," the militant group, which is the local branch of Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), said in a statement on its Twitter account. Houthi headquarters The group said the target was al-Jafra hospital, which had been turned by the Houthis into a base for their operations in the area. Local tribesmen said at least 15 people were killed in the attack and more than 50 were wounded. There was no immediate word from the Houthi, who are named after a Zaydi tribe based in the city of Saada some 540 kilometers (336 miles) to the north. Earlier Sunday, hundreds of Yemenis demonstrated in Sana'a, demanding that Houthi rebels who had seized control of the capital last week leave, a day after the Shi'ite Muslim fighters attacked the home of the intelligence chief. Witnesses said activists chanted slogans against President Hadi for his apparent weakness before the Houthi fighters. "You Hadi, find a solution, or else turn around and depart," demonstrators chanted. One sign carried by Sunday's protesters called for a "secure capital free of armed militias." On Saturday, Houthi fighters tried to fight their way into the home of Yemen's intelligence chief in Sana'a, in a clash that left one soldier and two tribesmen dead. The incident, which also wounded six soldiers and nine Houthis, showed the fragility of the power-sharing deal. Militant group Ansar al-Sharia had previously carried out numerous attacks on military and civilians installations of the U.S.-allied Yemeni government. But the group, which adheres to an austere brand of Sunni Islam which views Shi'ites as heretics, has turned its attention to the Houthis after they captured Sana’a. Last week, they said they carried out a similar attack on the Houthis in their northern stronghold of Saada province, in which dozens were killed or wounded. The stability of Yemen is a priority for the United States and its Gulf Arab allies because of its position next to Saudi Arabia and shipping lanes which run through the Gulf of Aden. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal told the U.N. General Assembly on Sunday that the situation in Yemen posed a threat to international security, and said the agreement to form a new government had been wrecked by the Houthis' failure to give up control of the capital. The U.S. State Department on Saturday condemned the ongoing violence in Yemen and voiced support for President Hadi as he tries to implement the Peace and National Partnership Agreement. The United States called on all parties to implement all aspects of the peace agreement, in particular the turning over of all medium and heavy weapons to the state. The State Department said the United States is stepping up efforts to work with the international community to pursue sanctions against individuals who are threatening Yemen’s peace, stability, and security, if they do not immediately stop such activities. Houthi background The Houthis captured Sana’a after overrunning an army brigade affiliated to the moderate Isalmist Islah party, making them effectively the power brokers in the country. Their Zaydi Shi'ite sect is related to but separate from the sect the rules Iran. They make up 30 percent of Yemen's population of 25 million and ruled a kingdom there for 1,000 years. But they have complained of being marginalized since their last king in Sana’a was overthrown in a 1962 revolution.

“The report is full of crap!” .Cheney on CIA Torture Report: The Ends Did Justify The Means. Fox News \'Special Report with Bret Baier 12/10/2014.
CIA report a \'terrible piece of work\'. Dick Cheney: ‘I Haven’t Read’ CIA Torture Report but It’s ‘Full of Crap’. “I think it’s a terrible piece of work, basically, it seems to me it’s deeply flawed, they didn’t bother to interview key people involved in the problem,” Cheney told Fox’s Bret Baier. “And I think that it’s sort of a classic example which you see too often in Washington where politicians get together and sort of throw the professionals under the bus.”
BRET BAIER, FOX NEWS: Sir, did the ends justify the means?

FORMER VICE PRESIDENT DICK CHENEY: Absolutely.

BRET BAIER: No doubt in your mind?

DICK CHENEY: No doubt in my mind, i\'m totally comfortable with it. Bret, I think you\'ve got to remember partly what was going on as well too during that period of time, we had reporting that al-Qaeda was trying to get their hands on nuclear weapons, that they had been dealing with Pakistanis who after all had nuclear weapons, we had the anthrax attacks, and we had every reason to expect to have a follow on attack. Our job was to keep the country safe and secure and get those guys who hit us on 9/11. That\'s exactly what we did, and the professionals int he intelligence community, especially at the CIA did one hell of a job.

NASA\'s Kepler spacecraft has discovered Kepler-10b, its first confirmed rocky planet and the smallest transiting exoplanet discovered to date. Kepler-10b is only 1.4 times the size of Earth and has an average density of 8.8 grams per cubic centimeter, similar to that of an iron dumbbell. The planet orbits its star in only 0.84 days and is not in the habitable zone, where liquid water could exist.

Antarctic photo science archive unlocked.
Aerial photos from the 1940s and 1950s are being used to probe the climate history of the Antarctic Peninsula.

UK scientists are comparing the images with newly acquired data sets to assess the changes that have occurred in some of the region\'s 400-plus glaciers.
