The Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe in Māori) is a 13-kilometre-long (8.1 mi) glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It was named in 1872 after a visit by the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, Sir William Fox.
Fed by four alpine glaciers, Fox Glacier falls 2,600 m (8,500 ft) on its 13 km journey from the Southern Alps down to the coast, with it having the distinction of being one of the few glaciers to end among lush rainforest only 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level. Although retreating throughout most of the last 100 years, it has been advancing between 1985 and 2009. In 2006 the average rate of advance was about a metre a week. In January 2009, the terminal face of the glacier was still advancing and had vertical or overhanging faces which were continually collapsing. Since then there has been a significant retreat, with the 2009 high level clearly visible as vegetation line on the southern slope above what is left of the lower glacier today.

A chopper flight over the magnificent Fox glacier in New Zealand, September 2014. Get to the choppa! (as Arnie would say)
It is basically the only thing you can do if you go to Fox: go to the Fox Glacier for a half-day walk or a full-day walk. You can also go to Fox Glacier by helicopter, but where is the fun of it? So we did a Fox Trot with the people of Fox Glacier Tours! In the next "Exploring New Zealand" video we go to Queenstown, which is the last part of our journey in New Zealand: www.youtube.com/diogok
Rated 2nd most scenic skydive in the world (just after mt. Everest) with a rediculous beautiful landscape including mountains, glaciers, rainforest and the tasman sea.
Experience spectacular scenic helicopter flights and incredible glacier landings. The opportunity to view up close and touch the glacier formations, ice caves and pinnacles - makes for a truly memorable experience. Glacier Helicopter flights range from 20 - 40 minutes and can include Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glaciers, Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Southern Alps.
A full day hike of Fox Glacier, New Zealand. We explored crevices and ice tunnels while touring around the glacier with crampons. It makes you marvel at the power of nature, and also makes you a little sad that the glacier is slowly melting, much of which is attributed to global warming. I deliberately chose some dramatic and sad music for this one because the glacier ice levels are at record lows which they attribute mainly to global warming. The fly-in, fly-out helihike combines the excitement of walking on the Fox Glacier with the thrill of helicopter flights. Suitable for children from 9 years old. By flying in you are able to access and explore a part of the glacier where its forces work hardest and often create spectacular ice caves and arches. Equipped with leather boots and other equipment, you board the helicopter for your first flight over the pinnacles of the lower icefall. Here, the ice is in constant motion. Take in views of the dramatic upper icefall and Victoria Falls, which is the melt river of the hidden Victoria glacier, before landing. Your landing site on the ice is a remote and exceptionally beautiful part of the glacier. At this stage, your guide outfits you with crampons, specially designed for these ice...
