Lt. Gen.Mustafa Tlass (Arabic: مصطفى طلاس; born 11 May 1932) is a Syrian politician and a long time minister of defense, now retired.
Tlass was born in the Syrian town of al-Rastan near the city of Homs to a prominent Sunni Muslim family. He joined the Ba'ath Party at the age of 15, and met Hafez al-Assad when studying at the military academy in Homs. The two officers became friends when they were both stationed in Cairo during the 1958-61 United Arab Republic merger between Syria and Egypt: while ardent Pan Arab nationalists, they both worked to break up the union, which they viewed as unfairly balanced in Egypt's favor. When al-Assad was briefly imprisoned by Nasser at the breakup of the union, Tlass fled and rescued his wife and sons to Syria.
During the 1960s al-Assad rose to prominence in the Syrian government through a 1963 coup d'état, backed by the Ba'ath party. He then promoted Tlass (who had not been actively involved in the coup) to high-ranking military and party positions. A 1966 coup by an Alawite-dominated Ba'ath faction further strengthened al-Assad, and by association Tlass. Tensions within the government soon became apparent, however, with al-Assad emerging as the prime proponent of a pragmatist, military-based faction opposed to the ideological radicalism of the dominant ultra-leftists. Syrian defeat in the 1967 Six Day War embarrassed the government, and in 1968 Assad managed to install Tlass as new Chief-of-Staff. After the debacle of an attempted Syrian intervention in the Black September conflict, the power struggle came to open conflict.

Thousands of Palestinians have staged a protest in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
On the day of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's 70th birthday, his people took to the streets to protest against the Syrian defence minister who they say made insulting remarks about Arafat.
Cars plastered with posters depicting Mustafa Tlass as a stripper - referring to his comparison of Arafat to a striptease artist - drove from a refugee camp to the West Bank city of Ramallah on Wednesday.
Palestinians pointed and laughed at the posters, showing the Syrian minister's head on top of a woman's body wearing a black lace bra and pants.

Senior diplomats meeting in Paris on Friday called for new, global sanctions against President Bashar Assad's regime, stepping up the pressure after the defection of a top general dealt a major blow to the Syrian leader.
But Syrian opposition leaders said they were frustrated by what they see as a lack of practical action against the Syrian regime by the international community.
At the Paris meeting, the US and its partners called for pressure on Russia and China to force Assad to step down.
Those two countries have stood by Assad and protected him from sanctions by the United Nations Security Council.

Diplomatic moves have continued throughout the Middle East as the U-N Iraq standoff approaches its twentieth day.
In Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa met with the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister, Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah. Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak talked with Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat.
The Kuwaiti Minister later denounced any U-S military force against Iraq, but said that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein should comply with the Security Council's resolutions.
In Jordan, the hardline Islamic Action Front supported Iraq in calls to attack American interests in the Middle East if the U-S attacked Iraq.

An official from the opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) confirmed reports on Friday that a top Syrian general, Brigadier General Manaf Tlass, had defected, dealing a severe blow to the Assad regime.
Hassan Hashimi, general secretary of the SNC, said Tlass' defection would encourage more generals to follow, as well as those from lower ranks.
Tlass was a member of the elite Republican Guards and a son of a former defence minister.
Hashimi said he wasn't sure of the general's whereabouts but was certain he had abandoned his support for the Syrian leader, President Bashar Assad,
"Our information confirmed that the defection has happened and he was on his way out of Syria. It's still early to confirm where he is right now, but he has defected for sure," he told reporters on Friday.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and other opposition websites claim he has fled to Turkey.
It is arguably the highest profile departure from the Assad regime since the uprising began in March of last year (2011).
Tlass was an influential Sunni figure in Syria's Alawite-dominated regime.
As the son of long-time Defence Minister Mustafa Tlass, the younger Tlass was a member of the Syrian Baath Party aristocracy, part of a privileged class that flourished under the Assad dynasty.
His father and Assad's father, Hafez, had been intimate friends since their days in the Syrian military academy in Homs and became close after they were posted in Cairo in the late 1950s when Egypt and Syria merged into the United Arab Republic, a union that lasted three years.
After Hafez Assad rose to power in the early 1970s, Mustafa Tlass became defence minister and the Syrian president's most trusted lieutenant.
When Hafez died of a heart attack in 2000, Tlass helped engineer Bashar's succession to the presidency and guided the inexperienced young doctor.
Tlass was the chief figure in a coterie of old regime figures that critics blamed for reining in moves to liberalise the Syrian regime.

Mustafa Tlass has acknowledged that he criticised Arafat in a speech in Lebanon but denies using insulting language.
The Syrian Defence Minister, Mustafa Tlass, in a speech marking army day in the Lebanese town of Baalbek, said Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, had been meek on the issue of Jerusalem.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"We never abandoned Palestine but Yasser Arafat is the one who abandoned Palestine and he was the coward. When he was in the White House he should have said that Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian."

Newspaper reports said Tlass also referred to Arafat as a "son of 60,000 whores" and likened the Palestinian leader's concessions to Israel to an ugly striptease.
The alleged verbal attack by Tlass runs counter to recent signs of an improvement in relations between Syria and the Palestinian leader.
Last week, the nephew of President Hafez al-Assad, Sumer al-Assad, met Arafat in Gaza.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"Israel throws test balloons saying (Lebanon first) but they actually mean that Lebanon should be the first to sign. But Syrian and Lebanese tracks are unified and that will not change. The great powers in the world build policies according to Israeli interests."

Tlass continued his speech by saying that the Palestinians had sold out the Jerusalem and Arab nations by poor negotiations in Oslo.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"They want Wye River to be implemented. The Wye River agreement means that the Palestinians should be given 10 percent of the West Bank lands and this whole Palestinian dream is now only represented in 10 percent of the West Bank despite all that the Israeli leaders are playing hard on them because the Palestinians sold Jerusalem and the Arab nations all in Oslo."

On Sunday, Arafat held a reconciliation meeting in Cairo with top officials of the Damascus-based Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which opposes the Israeli-Palestinian Oslo peace deal.
Tension and hostility have characterised Arafat's relationship with the Syrian leadership over the years.
Several showdowns took place between Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organization and the Syrian army during the Lebanese civil war in the 1970s and 1980s.
Syria is the main power broker in Lebanon.
The Syrians also remain angry at Arafat for negotiating separate interim peace agreements with Israel, without coordinating with Damascus.
Last month, when Arafat, with Egyptian help, tried to arrange an Arab summit to coordinate positions ahead of peace negotiations with Israel's new government, Syria torpedoed the idea.
There have also been increasing expectations that peace
negotiations could resume shortly between Syria and Israel after the
coming to power last month of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

Tlass's comments have unleashed a wave of angry protests by Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Thousands of Palestinians were bused to Yasser Arafat's headquarters on Saturday for a raucous demonstration protesting at the Syrian defence minister's insult of the Palestinian leader.
Angry demonstrators waved banners, pictures and flags, chanting slogans in support and praise of the president.
About 50 masked members of Arafat's Fatah group shot their semi-automatic weapons in the air in a show of solidarity.
In a speech in Lebanon last week, Syria's Defence Minister, Mustafa Tlass, accused Arafat of giving up on the Palestinian cause and abandoning Jerusalem by signing the 1993 Oslo peace accord with Israel.
He also accused the Palestinian leader of making concession after concession to Israel, likening him to a stripper removing layers of clothing.
At Saturday's rally, Arafat said that the Palestinian Authority was sticking to the agreement signed in Oslo, and - aiming his comments at the Israeli president, Ehud Barak - reiterated his desire that the agreement be implemented in full.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"We say to Barak, that we want to implement the agreement. We say to Barak that we want to implement the agreement which we signed and which the world witnessed. Yes, we want to implement the agreement according to each and every word and we don't need favours from anyone. We want to implement a true agreement so we can get to Jerusalem."

Arafat's relationship with Syria has been tense and hostile for years.
Arafat, though, insisted that the Palestinian people were fighting the same cause as Syria, and the rest of the Arab world.

"We (the Palestinian people) insist on being in the same trenches as Syria , and Jordan, Egypt and the rest of the Arab world."

But Tlass's remarks have incensed Palestinian officials, who demand a public apology from the minister.
They also want him to be fired.
Some supporters have even called for Tlass's death as punishment for insulting their leader.

Yasser Arafat's advisers demanded Tuesday that Syrian President Hafez Assad fire his defense minister, who reportedly referred to the Palestinian leader in a speech as a "son of 60,000 whores."
The defense minister, Mustafa Tlass, acknowledged that he criticised Arafat in a speech in Lebanon on Monday for making concessions in peace talks with Israel, but denied using insulting language.
Tlass launched a verbal attack on the Palestinian leader about what he says is Arafat's failure to maintain Palestinian rights over Jerusalem.
The Syrian Defence Minister, Mustafa Tlass, in a speech marking army day in the Lebanese town of Baalbek, said Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, had been meek on the issue of Jerusalem.
He accused Arafat of making concession after concession to Israel "like a stripper".
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"Yasser Arafat in his concessions to Israel is like a striptease dancer every time she appears on stage and takes off some of her clothes. But the difference between Yasser Arafat and the striptease dancer is that whenever the dancer takes off layers of her clothes she reveals her beauty while every time Yasser Arafat takes off his
clothes he looks uglier. Please see him on television to believe what I am saying. "

The Syrians also remain angry at Arafat for negotiating separate interim peace agreements with Israel, without coordinating with Damascus.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
We have never in our lives abandoned Palestine but Yasser Arafat is the one who abandoned Palestine and he is the one who was a coward and showed cowardice and gave in at the White House where he should have said that Jerusalem was the unified capital of the coming Palestinian state. But he appeared in the White House like a black dog, a black cat. He did not have the guts to speak one word for Palestine and Jerusalem. Why, you son of 60,000 dogs, you son of 60,000 bitches...why did not you say this in the White House"

Tlass continued his speech by saying that the Palestinians had sold out Arab nations by poor negotiations in Oslo.

In Gaza on Tuesday, Palestinians reacted angrily to Tlass's comments.

Later in the day, buses brought hundreds of protesters from all over the West Bank to Arafat's headquarters in Ramallah for a protest denouncing Tlass.
On Monday, in a speech delivered in Lebanon, Tlass criticised Arafat for concessions to Israel, calling him "the son of 60-thousand whores."
Tlass denied making the comment, but the speech was recorded by a television crew and broadcast all over the Middle East.
Palestinian official Tayyeb Abdul Rahim dismissed Tlass as "a nightclub regular".
On Tuesday, Arafat aides demanded that Syrian President Hafez Assad fire Tlass over the remarks.
Arafat's relationship with the Syria has been tense and hostile for years.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius announced the defection of Brigadier General Manaf Tlass, a member of the elite Republican Guard and a son of a former defence minister.
He is the uprising's highest ranking defector yet, marking a blow to a regime that has largely held together in the face of the uprising.
Even those closest to him "are starting to realise that you cannot support a butcher like Mr. Bashar Assad," Fabius said.
As the son of longtime Defence Minister Mustafa Tlass, the general was a member of the Syrian Baath Party aristocracy, part of a privileged class that flourished under the Assad dynasty.
He also was one of the most important Sunni figures in Syria's Alawite-dominated regime.
The gathering in France's capital aimed to win wider support for a Syrian transition plan unveiled last week by United Nations mediator Kofi
Annan.
Joined by America's allies, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called for "real and immediate consequences for non-compliance, including sanctions," against the Assad regime.
But with neither Moscow nor Beijing in attendance, much remained dependent on persuading the two reluctant UN veto-wielding powers to force Assad into abiding by a cease-fire and the transition strategy.
George Sabra, a spokesperson for the Syrian National Council (SNC) in attendance of the meeting expressed his disappointment.
"We need more than promises. We need funds, real funds to deal with the needs, real needs now in Syria, and for the future, (to) rebuild the country. Because Bashar al-Assad will leave the country broken, destroyed, fully," he said.
Syrian rebels also said sanctions weren't working and expressed a preference for quick military action.
New violence in Syria led many activists to dismiss the importance of the Paris meeting.
Anti-regime activists say Syrian forces have killed at least 25 people, arrested scores more and torched dozens of homes while seizing the northern city of Khan Sheikhoun from rebels.

Syrian rebel groups firing mortars, rockets and gunfire against regime targets in cities across the country.
One clip purported to show rebels from the Homs Liberation Movement launching two mortars in the eastern city of al-Rastan, north of Homs. Later in the video smoke is seen rising from a building said to be owned by former Syrian defence minister and senior military official Mustafa Tlass.
A second clip purported to show Syrian rebel fighters loading and lighting a rocket launcher in the city of al-Shaykh Maskin in the southern governorate of Deraa.
The rocket was then fired, said to hit Syrian army forces causing a large explosion and a grey plume of smoke.
A third amateur video said to be filmed in the same area and uploaded on Monday purportedly showed insurgents from the Ahrar al-Yarmouk rebel brigade firing towards army targets from a small hole in a wall. The footage also shows damaged buildings targeted by the rebels where army forces were said to be based.
A final clip apparently showed rebel fighters from the Mujahdeen Army and the Nour al-Din al-Zinki Movement firing missiles from the rooftops of a building in what is said to be the northern city of Sheikh Najjar in the governorate of Aleppo.
Reuters is unable to independently verify the content of these videos which were obtained from a social media website.
The Syrian conflict, now in its fourth year, has killed around 200,000 people, according to the United Nations.

The meeting between the foreign ministers of Kuwait and Egypt took place in Cairo.
The victim of 1990 in talks with the most powerful Arab state.
Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sabah al-Ahmed Al-Sabah arrived on Saturday for consultations with senior Egyptian leaders on the standoff ahead of a similar visit by Iraq's deputy prime minister Tariq Aziz.
Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah said his country does not support military action against Iraq over the latest standoff with the United Nations.
But be also said that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein should comply with the Security Council's resolutions.
The Kuwaiti Cabinet issued a statement on Sunday urging a diplomatic solution to the problem "so that Iraqi people would not be subjected to more misery and suffering".
Al-Sabah said he delivered a message from Kuwait's emir, Sheik Jaber al-Ahmed al-Sabah, to Mubarak on the crisis. Later he will travel to Damascus to deliver a similar message to Syria's President Hafez Assad.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"We don't agree with any military action against Iraq, but first of all we wonder who is responsible for the start of this conflict. If any military action took place in Iraq it will have a negative effect on the Iraqi people and their neighbours, therefore we hope to reach a solution and implement the Security Council resolutions and watch it from an objective point of view to avoid any military action."

Egypt was a key partner in the US-led international coalition that liberated Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in 1991, and it still has no diplomatic relations with Baghdad.
But recently it signed contracts to sell food to Iraq under the oil-for-food programme.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"President Arafat expressed to Mubarak, his opinion of the American role and US Secretary of State Secretary Madeleine Albright's statement against Iraq, and he is still pessimistic about this situation."

In Jordan, the Islamic Action Front, has spoken out against American involvement in the Middle East.
The political arm of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood Movement, the organisation is part of a coalition of nine Jordanian opposition parties, which include pan-Arab nationalists.
Members of the Islamic Front regard the U-S policy in the Middle East as biased towards Israel and aimed at controlling Arab oil wealth.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"Iraqi-Arab efforts are to defend the Arab land and the Arab interests with all possible means. America is using weapons of mass destruction against Iraq. We are still just talking about mere statements. I agree with the call of the Iraqi press yesterday for the importance of repulsing the American aggression."
SUPER CAPTION: Salem Nahas, Islamic Action Front
Most Arab countries have expressed opposition to using military force against Iraq. Syrian Defence Minister Mustafa Tlas - whose government joined the anti-Iraq coalition in the Gulf War - spoke out against using force in an interview published Sunday in the

Syrian Defence Minister Mustafa Tlas - whose government joined the anti-Iraq coalition in the Gulf War - spoke out against using force in an interview published Sunday in the
Arabic daily Al-Hayat.

Syrian Defence Minister, Mustafa Tlass, has launched a verbal attack on Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, about what he says is Arafat's failure to maintain Palestinian rights over Jerusalem.
Meanwhile Arafat's advisers demanded Tuesday that Syrian President Hafez Assad fire his Defence Minister, who reportedly referred to the Palestinian leader in a speech as a "son of 60,000 whores."
SUPERCAPTION: Mustafa Tlass, Syrian Defence Minister

SUPERCAPTION: Mustafa Tlass, Syrian Defence Minister

Hundreds of Palestinians have rallied in self-ruled Gaza to show support for Yasser Arafat after Syria's defence minister, Mustafa Tlass, launched a vicious verbal attack on him earlier in the week.
In a speech marking Army Day in Syria and Lebanon, the Syrian minister called President Arafat obscene names for making peace with Israel.
SUPER CAPTION: Yasser Arafat, Palestinian President
Arafat's relationship with Syria has been tense and hostile for years.
Arafat, though, insisted that the Palestinian people were fighting the same cause as Syria, and the rest of the Arab world.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"We (the Palestinian people) insist on being in the same trenches as Syria , and Jordan, Egypt and the rest of the Arab world."
SUPER CAPTION: Yasser Arafat, Palestinian President
But Tlass's remarks have incensed Palestinian officials, who demand a public apology from the minister.
They also want him to be fired.
Some supporters have even called for Tlass's death as punishment for insulting their leader.

SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)

Senior diplomats meeting in Paris on Friday called for new, global sanctions against President Bashar Assad's regime, stepping up the pressure after the defection of a top general dealt a major blow to the Syrian leader.
But Syrian opposition leaders said they were frustrated by what they see as a lack of practical action against the Syrian regime by the international community.
At the Paris meeting, the US and its partners called for pressure on Russia and China to force Assad to step down.
Those two countries have stood by Assad and protected him from sanctions by the United Nations Security Council.
