DENVER — Raw video from the Denver officer-involved shooting. In the video, an unidentified man takes a woman and uses her as a shield while police yell for the man to surrender.
WARNING: This video may not be appropriate for some viewers.
As the man tries to take the woman back inside the store, an officer opens fire hitting the man. He falls to the ground, the hostage runs away and officers swarm the area.
The man was taken to Denver Health Medical Center for treatment and was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.
(DenverChannel) DENVER - Denver Police have identified the suspect who allegedly took hostages inside a 7-Eleven Monday. Police said 34-year-old Blas Leroux was shot in the shoulder as he tried to use one of the hostages as a human shield.
The standoff began at 8:30 a.m., after witnesses saw the suspect running from police.
"He dropped his coat," said Dino Gallegos, who was exiting the store as Leroux ran in, "and the officer picked it up. The suspect ran around the corner and into 7-Eleven."
Police Chief Robert White said negotiators tried for nearly an hour to get him to surrender. He refused and instead used one of the three hostages as a shield in an attempt to escape.
"The officers demanded that he let her go, at which time he attempted to pull her back into the store," White said. "So out of fear for her safety, one of the officers fired a shot striking the individual."
Leroux was taken to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The hostage was not injured.
A Colorado Bureau of Investigation report shows Leroux has used several other names. He has a lengthy criminal record including convictions for trespass, motor vehicle theft, assault, burglary, child abuse, escape and harassment.

Hostage
A hostage is a person or entity which is held by one of two belligerent parties to the other or seized as security for the carrying out of an agreement, or as a preventive measure against war. However, in contemporary usage, it means someone who is seized by a criminal abductor in order to compel another party such as a relative, employer, law enforcement, or government to act, or refrain from acting, in a particular way, often under threat of serious physical harm to the hostage(s) after expiration of an ultimatum.
A person who seizes one or more hostages is known as a hostage-taker; if the hostages are present voluntarily, then the receiver is known as a host.
Historical hostage practices
The English word "hostage" derives from French ostage, modern otage, from Late Latin obsidaticum (Medieval Latin ostaticum, ostagium), the state of being an obses (plural obsides), "hostage", from Latin obsideō ("I haunt / frequent / blockade / besiege"), but an etymological connection was later supposed with Latin hostis ("stranger," later "enemy"). This long history of political and military use indicates that political authorities or generals would legally agree to hand over one or usually several hostages in the custody of the other side, as guarantee of good faith in the observance of obligations. These obligations would be in the form of signing of a peace treaty, in the hands of the victor, or even exchange hostages as mutual assurance in cases such as an armistice. Major powers, such as Ancient Rome and the British who had colonial vassals, would especially receive many such political hostages, often offspring of the elite, even princes or princesses who were generally treated according to their rank and put to a subtle long-term use where they would be given an elitist education or possibly even a religious conversion. This would eventually influence them culturally and open the way for an amicable political line if they ascended to power after release.

Halla Bol
Halla Bol (Raise Your Voice) is a Hindi drama film released on 11 January 2008, and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Halla Bol stars Ajay Devgan and Vidya Balan in pivotal roles and a number of celebrities from the Hindi film industry appear as themselves. Produced by Samee Siddiqui, the film's score and soundtrack was composed by Sukhwinder Singh, while Nataraja Subramanian and Steven Bernard were the cinematographer and editor respectively.
The film touches upon the Jessica Lall murder case, Aamir Khan's involvement with the Narmada Bachao Andolan, the Right to Information Act, and public participation in fighting corruption. It also references the theatre group Jan Natya Manch, whose leader, theatre activist Safdar Hashmi, was killed by political rivals while performing a street play by the same name, Halla Bol!, in 1989.
Plot
Ashfaque (Ajay Devgn) is a small town boy aspiring to be a film star in the Hindi film industry. He joins a street theatre group run by a reformed dacoit Sidhu (Pankaj Kapoor), who uses street theatre as a medium to bring about an awakening in the masses. Ashfaque struggles to give a creative vent to the actor in him in order to realise his dreams. Ashfaque's determined struggle pays off and he gets a break in films. He gets a new screen name – Sameer Khan. With the passage of time, he moves up the success ladder in a very short time.

DENVER — Raw video from the Denver officer-involved shooting. In the video, an unidentified man takes a woman and uses her as a shield while police yell for the man to surrender.

As the man tries to take the woman back inside the store, an officer opens fire hitting the man. He falls to the ground, the hostage runs away and officers swarm the area.
The man was taken to Denver Health Medical Center for treatment and was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.
(DenverChannel) DENVER - Denver Police have identified the suspect who allegedly took hostages inside a 7-Eleven Monday. Police said 34-year-old Blas Leroux was shot in the shoulder as he tried to use one of the hostages as a human shield.
The standoff began at 8:30 a.m., after witnesses saw the suspect running from police.
"He dropped his coat," said Dino Gallegos, who was exiting the store as Leroux ran in, "and the officer picked it up. The suspect ran around the corner and into 7-Eleven."
Police Chief Robert White said negotiators tried for nearly an hour to get him to surrender. He refused and instead used one of the three hostages as a shield in an attempt to escape.
"The officers demanded that he let her go, at which time he attempted to pull her back into the store," White said. "So out of fear for her safety, one of the officers fired a shot striking the individual."
Leroux was taken to a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The hostage was not injured.
A Colorado Bureau of Investigation report shows Leroux has used several other names. He has a lengthy criminal record including convictions for trespass, motor vehicle theft, assault, burglary, child abuse, escape and harassment.
