In a debate moderated by TIMES NOW's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, panelists -- Dr Chandan Mitra, Editor-in-Chief, The Pioneer & MP, Rajya Sabha, BJP; Sanjay Jha, Spokesperson, Congress; Gaurav Bhatia, Spokesperson and Natl President, Legal Wing, SP; Saba Naqvi, Political Editor, Outlook; Kumar Ketkar, Sr Journalist; R Rajagopalan, Senior Journalist; and Jayanto Ghoshal, Editor, Ananda Bazar Patrika -- discuss the issue of Oppn parties protesting in Parliament over blackmoney, reconversion and whether the battle of egos is holding the Parliament to ransom.
Opposition parties today (Dec 22, 2014) staged protests in the Parliament complex, cornering the government over blackmoney and reconversion issues. The TMC staged protest over the blackmoney issue, in front of the Gandhi statue in the complex, while the Samajwadi Party joined by the JD(U) demonstrated at the same venue, accusing the government of not fulfilling the promises made before the Lok Sabha elections. The conversion heat, which has been paralysing Rajya Sabha since last week, reached the Lok Sabha with opposition trying to corner the government which asserted that neither it nor BJP has anything to do with conversions. Raising the issue in the wake of media report about conversion of 30 Dalit Christians to Hinduism in Kerala, the opposition demanded that only Prime Minister should respond to the concerns over it because "only his writ runs in the country" and he is the "commanding authority" who "holds the master key". Rejecting the demand, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said the government does not support conversion or re-conversion and if any individuals are violating the law, state governments are empowered to take action. Opposition and Treasury benches indulged in slanging match repeatedly leading to two adjournments. Several parties, including Congress, TMC, Left, RJD, JD-U and JD-S, staged a walkout expressing unhappiness over rejection of their demand. The issue of conversion, which has led to stalling of Rajya Sabha for almost entire last week, was raised by Congress member K C Venugopal. He was supported by other members of Congress and opposition parties. Pitching for larger Opposition unity, six constituents of the erstwhile Janata Parivar shared dais at a "Mahadharna" slamming BJP's "divisive" politics and accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of "telling lies" and "not fulfilling" poll promises on black money. Leaders of the splinter groups including SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad and JD(U)'s Nitish Kumar called for "sinking old prejudices" and promised to "script a new story" in the Indian politics by ousting BJP.
