This is the terrifying sound of a Russian bomber sending coded messages back to base – as it flies near CORNWALL. The RAF scrambled Typhoon fighter jets to escort the two Russian Bear bombers who flew terrifyingly close to England as they passed up the Celtic Sea on Wednesday evening. The planes are believed to have flown around Ireland, in international airspace, before flying close to Cornwall and the English Channel. In a statement the Ministry of Defence said: "RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighter aircraft were launched after Russian aircraft were identified flying close to UK airspace. -

An MoD spokesman said RAF Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon fighter aircraft were launched yesterday after Russian aircraft were identified flying close to UK airspace.' The spokesman added 'The Russian planes were escorted by the RAF until they were out of the UK area of interest. At no time did the Russian military aircraft cross into UK sovereign airspace.' The move came on the day Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said that Nato is getting ready to fight back against Russian aggression as it poses a real and present danger' to the Baltic States. He told of the threat to Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia as Vladimir Putin continues to 'test us' by deploying submarines and warplanes near British territory It comes after a similar approach by two identical Russian planes last month off the coast of Bournemouth. Experts said then that the manoeuvre could have been designed to ‘probe the RAF speed of reaction’ raising fears that the Russians were looking for weaknesses in the British fighter force. Russia is said to have stepped up military manoeuvres as Britain joins the chorus of international condemnation of Vladimir Putins support and alleged arming of rebels in Ukraine During the similar incident last month the Typhoons were so close to the Russian planes roughly 1,000ft away that they could signal to the pilots. Earlier this week a Russian warship was intercepted by the Royal Navy as it strayed close to the UK while passing through the English Channel The vessel – equipped with missiles anti aircraft guns and torpedoes was monitored and escorted by a heavily armed British frigate HMS Argyll Britain summoned the Russian ambassador for a dressing down after long-range bombers flew over the Channel close to UK airspace last month, disrupting civil aviation and prompting Britain, like today, to scramble two Typhoon jets. Fears have been raised that a Russian military plane could crash with an airliner after a near miss in the skies over a Sweden last year when a spy-plane switched off its transponders, making it invisible to commercial radar. More than 100 Russian aircraft were intercepted last year three times more than during the whole of 2013.

The Federal Reserve just came out and said that it was going to be “patient” when normalizing the monetary policy. I know Wall Street is jubilant and the stock market spiked on the news, but I think this is really ominous and it is nothing to be celebrated. To me, that means don’t expect the Fed to raise interest rates anytime soon because the economy is much worse than what they are telling you. Why else would Fed Head Janet Yellen come out and say the Fed was going to keep the easy money policies for a “considerable time.” If we did have a so called “recovery,” wouldn’t you be raising rates and pulling back on the juice? Falling oil prices may be a joy at the pump here, but for Russia, it is a nightmare. There is talk of China bailing out Russia. There are rumors of bank runs in Russia despite a new 17% interest rate. Russia’s currency, the ruble, has had its buying power cut in half in a matter of months. It is crystal clear the U.S. and Russia are at economic war, and Vladimir Putin gave a speech this week to essentially say the Russian Bear is not going to roll over. I also think reopening relations with Cuba was a very bad deal because the U.S. did not get much in return. Democrats like Senator Robert Menendez say it “vindicates the brutal behavior” of the Cuban government. Republican Senator Marco Rubio says President Obama “betrayed” Cubans fighting for freedom. The Russian Defense Ministry's TV channel has released video footage taken from a Tu-95 strategic bomber as it was shadowed by RAF Fighter Typhoon jets. The video features engines that appear to be stalling. The clip published on Wednesday by the Zvezda channel was shot from one of the Tupolev Tu-95 “Bear” bombers as it was flying on a mission in international airspace close to the United Kingdom. The turboprop bomber is seen being escorted closely by several NATO fighter jets scrambled to intercept it. One is easily identified by its tail code “FB” as an RAF Eurofigher Typhoon from the Lossiemouth airbase.

The Russian Bear is a widespread symbol for Russia, used in cartoons, articles and dramatic plays at least since the 17th century, and relating alike to Tsarist Russia, the Soviet Union and the present-day Russian Federation.
It often was and is used by Westerners, to begin with especially in Britain and later also in the US, and not always in a flattering context — on occasion used to imply that Russia is "big, brutal and clumsy" (see 19th century cartoon below).
The bear image was, however, on various occasions (especially in the 20th century) also taken up by Russians themselves. Having the teddy bear "Misha" as the mascot of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games — boycotted by numerous countries due to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan — was evidently intended to counter the "big and brutal Russian Bear" image with a small, cuddly and smiling bear.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, there was some support in the Russian Parliament for having a bear as the new Russian coat of arms — with the proposers pointing out that "Russia is anyway identified in the world with the Bear" — though eventually it was the Tsarist coat of arms of the Double-headed eagle that was restored.
