Year 1969 (MCMLXIX) was a common year starting on Wednesday (link will display the full calendar) of the Gregorian calendar. The year is associated with the first manned landing on the Moon (Apollo 11).
John William "Johnny" Carson (October 23, 1925 – January 23, 2005) was an American television host and comedian, known for thirty years as host of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962–1992). Carson received six Emmy Awards, the Governor Award, and a 1985 Peabody Award. He was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1987. Johnny Carson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992 and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 1993.
Although his show was already successful by the end of the 1960s, during the 1970s Carson became an American icon and remained so until his retirement in 1992. He adopted a casual, conversational approach with extensive interaction with guests, an approach pioneered by Arthur Godfrey and previous Tonight Show hosts Steve Allen and Jack Paar. Late night hosts David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, Craig Ferguson, and Jimmy Fallon have all cited Carson's influence on their late-night talk shows, which resemble his in format and tone.
Carson was born in Corning, Iowa, in the year 1925, to Homer Lloyd "Kit" Carson, a power company manager, and Ruth Hook Carson, who was of Irish descent. He grew up in the nearby towns of Avoca, Clarinda, and Red Oak in southwest Iowa before moving to Norfolk, Nebraska, at the age of eight. At the age of twelve, Carson found a book on magic at a friend's house and immediately purchased a mail-order magician's kit. He debuted as "The Great Carsoni" at fourteen and was paid $3; many other performances at local picnics and country fairs followed.
Richard Burton, CBE (10 November 1925 – 5 August 1984) was a Welsh actor. He was nominated seven times for an Academy Award, six of which were for Best Actor in a Leading Role (without ever winning), and was a recipient of BAFTA, Golden Globe and Tony Awards for Best Actor. Although never trained as an actor, Burton was, at one time, the highest-paid actor in Hollywood. He remains closely associated in the public consciousness with his second wife, actress Elizabeth Taylor; the couple's turbulent relationship was rarely out of the news.
Richard Burton was born Richard Walter Jenkins in the village of Pontrhydyfen, Neath Port Talbot, Wales. He grew up in a working class, Welsh-speaking household, the twelfth of thirteen children. His father, Richard Walter Jenkins, was a short, robust coal miner, a "twelve-pints-a-day man" who sometimes went off on drinking and gambling sprees for weeks. Burton later claimed, by family telling, that "He looked very much like me...That is, he was pockmarked, devious, and smiled a great deal when he was in trouble. He was, also, a man of extraordinary eloquence, tremendous passion, great violence."
Sir Reginald Carey "Rex" Harrison (5 March 1908 – 2 June 1990) was an English actor of stage and screen. One of Harrison's best remembered film roles was that of Professor Henry Higgins in the stage and film versions of My Fair Lady. The role earned him a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award and Best Actor Oscar.
Harrison was born in Huyton, Lancashire, and educated at Liverpool College. After a bout of childhood measles, Harrison lost most of the sight in his left eye, which on one occasion caused some on-stage difficulty. He first appeared on the stage in 1924 in Liverpool. Harrison's acting career was interrupted during World War II while serving in the Royal Air Force, reaching the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He acted in various stage productions until 11 May 1990. He acted in the West End of London when he was young, appearing in the Terence Rattigan play French Without Tears, which proved to be his breakthrough role.
Julius Henry "Groucho" Marx (October 2, 1890 – August 19, 1977) was an American comedian and film and television star. He is known as a master of quick wit and widely considered one of the best comedians of the modern era. His rapid-fire, often impromptu delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers and imitators. He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers, of whom he was the third-born. He also had a successful solo career, most notably as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as an exaggerated stooped posture, glasses, cigar, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows. These exaggerated features resulted in the creation of one of the world's most ubiquitous and recognizable novelty disguises, known as "Groucho glasses", a one-piece mask consisting of horn-rimmed glasses, large plastic nose, bushy eyebrows and mustache.
In a 1950 radio episode of You Bet Your Life, Groucho stated that he was born in a room above a butcher's shop on 78th Street in New York City.
Plot
George Smith, an architect in San Francisco, is feeling "a bit flat" after completing his latest, less-than-fulfilling project: designing a warehouse for a commercial complex. George's wife, Alice, tries to cheer him up by taking him to a party of artists, but it turns out to be a gaudy, pretentious affair that leaves both of them dispirited. After a restless night, George wakes up to find himself gazing with newfound fascination at the Picasso reproductions that adorn the walls of their apartment. Overcome with admiration for a truly brilliant artist, George impulsively proposes that he and Alice fly off to the south of France to track down Picasso and thank him in person. Alice agrees, thinking the trip will prove a delightful lark. But George's desire to find Picasso turns into an obsession that starts to take a toll on their seemingly ideal marriage.
Well alright
Well it's 1969 okay

There's nothing here for me and you
We're just sitting here with nothing to do
Well, there's nothing here for me and you
Another year with nothing to do
Now, last year I was 21
I didn't have a lot of fun
Now, I'm gonna be 22
So, oh my, I'll boohoo

Its 1969 in my head
I just wanna have no place to go
Livin thru the sound of the dead
I'm gonna get stoned look round at my soul
I'm hearin voices in the trees
And seein footsteps in the rain
I just wanna die before I loose my dol
I have been cryin in my sleep
Cause I dont kno where i've been
I just wanna live to see another day
Hey hey hey hey
When I get my buick six
I'll see my life drop in that whirlpool
If I get to see you again
You're the only one I know
Here we go
There I stand
I'm a seed
Of a man
Dare I go
Dare I stare
I'm a seed
Its 1969 in my head
I just wanna have no place to go
Livin thru the sound of the dead
I'm gonna get stoned look round at my soul
I'm hearin voices in the trees
And seein footsteps in the rain
I just wanna die before I loose my dol
I have been cryin in my sleep
Cause I dont kno where i've been
I just wanna live to see another day
Hey hey hey hey [x8]
When I get my buick six
I'll see my life drop in that whirlpool
If I get to see you again
You're the only one I know
Here we go
There I stand
I'm a seed
Of a man
Dare I go
Dare I stare
I'm a seed
of a man
I remember sixty eight
Though I was a sperm
I had so much left to learn
So many different future heartburns
I came out in '69
Thought the world was fine but
I grew up a different guy
Since 1969
Even if I know I'm not
The melancholy kind
If I'd known what I'd find
I'd've gotten back in and stayed behind
For now I think I've seen too much
Too much to forget to
Take me back to where it's at
To 1969
Sitting in a Paris bar
I saw the Concorde crash
We were born the very same day
We were bound to fly much faster
Oh my little steely bird
Come to meet your end and
Fly me back from where we came
To 1969
No, I don't think I regret
Any single year
It's so easy to look back
I've been there and I've done that so now
Stop the custom Cadillac
Light the flashy tails and
Drive me back in style and grace
Well it's 1969 okay
All across the USA
It's another year
For me and you
Another year
With nothin' to do
Nothing here
For me and you
Nothin' here
With nothin' to do
Now last year I was 21
I didn't have a lot of fun
And now I'm gonna be 22
I say oh my and boo hoo
I said now I'm gonna be 22
Oh my and boo hoo hoo
It's 1969 okay
All across the USA
It's another year
For me and you
Another year
With nothin' to do
1969
It's 1969
It's 1969
Well it's 1969 okay
All across the USA
It's another year

Another year

Last year I was 21

I ain't got no money, but my love is real
I'm gonna drop some acid, I wanna smoke some weed
I wanna fuck you like it's 1969.
She's got them go-go boots, she's a flower child
We could go all the way, but first you wait a while
I wanna party like it's 1969.
[Dirt Nasty:]
'69 Summer of Love, 1980 summer of drugs
Man, I shoulda been a hippie, dropped the acid with Janice and Jimmy
Do me while I hit the doobie
Flower in her ear, natural boobies
Coochie bushy as fuck, free love and the V Dub Bus
Woodstock here I come, with a bag of 'shrooms
And my loaded love gun, so huh, just relax, kick back and hit this hash
Thumbs up on the shoulder pads, you know the rules: ass, grass or cash. Stay high, stay lude, say goodbye to my bottle of Quelude.
I ain't got no money, but my love is real
I'm gonna drop some acid, I wanna smoke some weed
I wanna fuck you like it's 1969.
She's got them go-go boots, she's a flower child
We could go all the way, but first you wait a while
I wanna party like it's 1969.
[Too Short:]
Everybody's poppin bottles and dreamin about goin out with models
I spend a lot on a round of shots, I get drunk and I clown a lot
But I wish I could go back in time, back to 1969
Maybe hit a few orgies, y'all, and have unsafe sex with gorgeous broads
Yea, that's what's up, I could use my dick to express my love
Because I love you baby, that was 40 years ago I must be crazy
You wanna get your hype with me, then go far away from society
I just know want to fuck you now, let's drop out and make a love child.
I ain't got no money, but my love is real
I'm gonna drop some acid, I wanna smoke some weed
I wanna fuck you like it's 1969.
She's got them go-go boots, she's a flower child
We could go all the way, but first you wait a while
Well it's 1969 okay
All across the USA
It's another year
For me and you
Another year

And now I'm gonna be 22

All across the USA
It's another year
For me and you
Another year
With nothing to do
Another year
With nothing to do
It's 1969
[Verse 1:]
Hippies, politicals, hippies to sexual revolution
Led Zeppelin, Woodstock plastics, innocence
Jimmy Hendrix, free love and indeed sunshine of your mind
The peace movement took Chicago late
And they took four dead in Ohio
The nakedness awakening a riot
Monte Python was flying in the circus
Bliss concerts, you know the doors are open
And the Vietnam War, Bob Dylan, Electric Kool-Aid, Acid tests once more
Soul Shakedown, [?], Bob Marley, Weather The Storm
King Keezy, Jamaica and the shores
Alistair Crowley, Blowfly records
From Rocksteady to hardcore
The Gutter Punks that rock and roll adored
[Chorus:]
Every memory all around me
Every energy comes flowing to the show
It was all in me back in 1969
With my mother and my father's seeds
[?] to discovery
From the moments that I couldn't have even I began to breathe
Back in 1969
[Verse 2:]
Ska and reggae with the buddhism, good ism
This is space oddity and David Bowie listen
With the mushrooms that Terence McKenna do
The nudist colonies, never fearing [?]
Syphilites and peyote
And the play called heroin
We were noticed [?]
Women's rights, votes wagon buses
Bra burning, militant discussions
Faithful Grateful Dead and ganja
Crystal energies, something strong for the head
And lots of drugs, goo goo's and rainbows
San Francisco styles of [?]
Haight-Ashbury, Venice Beach
Janice Joplin [?]
Aldus Huxley LSD
Free speech, Timothy Leary
Doors of perception are appearing
[Chorus]
[Verse 3:]
Black and white connection, Miles Davis in collection
Indian spirits resurrections
James Brown getting down
Onto country joe, the cointelpro file
Counterculture know how
The trip over racial violence, we can liberate from this
Give back to the land, earth, day
And announce that it works this way
And then I heard a darker sound
I turned around
But it was gone
They glide across the endless day
As if to say
The time has come
The world had died
And no-one saw
And no-one tried
To see what for
And dipping thru the heavy sky
I caught its eye
It had to smile
And say I shouldn't really mind
They managed fine
For quite a while
I tried to stand
Sank to the floor
A Chinese band
Marched by in fours
They tore the flowers from my hand
And then they ran
To look for more
Hey I hate the picture 1969
Lord I hate the picture 1969
And then I heard the songs they sung
A hundred tongues
Began to shout
And then a panic in the hall
I heard them call
We can't get out
The world had died
They meant it too
And no-one cried
For no-one knew
I took a photo of the night
In black and white
In colours too
Hey I hate the picture 1969
Lord I hate the picture 1969
sundress and flowers
i got her on my mind
she gave me free sweet love
aquarius was her sign
back in nineteen
back in nineteen
nineteen sixty-nine
did you ever hear him play?
he opened up my eyes
what a glorious moment
when he kissed the sky
back in nineteen
back in nineteen
nineteen sixty-nine
did you think the world would change?
that the war would end
and freedom sing?
did you take the magic carpet ride
following a dream?
did i see you there at woodstock
or on the dock of the bay
on purple haze?
back in nineteen sixty-nine
back in nineteen
back in nineteen
do you remember nineteen sixty-nine?
back in nineteen
back in nineteen
do you remember nineteen sixty-nine
do you remember all of the magic?
it was like following a dream
back in nineteen sixty-nine
back in nineteen
back in nineteen
