MTV, an initialism of Music Television, is an American network based in New York City that launched on August 1, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs.
MTV has had a profound impact on the music industry and popular culture. Slogans such as "I want my MTV" and "MTV is here" were embedded in public thought, the concept of the VJ was popularized, the idea of a dedicated video-based outlet for music was introduced, and both artists and fans found a central location for concert music events, news, and promotion. MTV has also been referenced countless times in popular culture by musicians, other TV channels and television program, films, and books.
MTV has spawned numerous sister channels in the U.S. and affiliated channels internationally, some of which, like the former MTV Tempo now known as TEMPO Networks, have gone independent. MTV's moral influence on young people, including issues related to censorship and social activism, has been a subject of intense debate for years. MTV's choice to focus on non-music programming has also been contested relentlessly since the 1990s, demonstrating the channel's previous impact on popular culture. MTV has since largely departed from music programming and is now known for producing mostly teen-oriented programs.
Cássia Rejane Eller (December 10, 1962 – December 29, 2001) was a Brazilian musician. She performed a fusion of rock and MPB.
After spending most of her adolescence in Brasília, Eller dropped out of high school and returned to her birthplace of Rio de Janeiro, where she began a career as a recording artist. In 1990, she became an underground favorite with the release of her self-titled debut album, which contained the song "Rubens," an ambiguous love song that was censored by the authorities. Her follow-up release, 1992's E.C.T., has been called "a battle cry for sexual freedom."
Eller gave birth to a son, Francisco "Chicão" Eller, in 1993. That same year, she went public with her long-term relationship with Maria Eugênia Vieira Martins. She explained that she came out so that her son could grow up without hearing rumors about his mother. As one of Brazil's most prominent lesbian artists, Eller was sometimes called the "South American Melissa Etheridge."
In addition to her deep and husky singing voice, Eller became known for her brash public image, as she occasionally wore a mohawk and bared her breasts on television shows. She posed nude for the artwork of her breakout release, 1999's Com Você... Meu Mundo Ficaria Completo. The album went gold and earned Eller a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Best Brazilian Rock Album. She received another Latin Grammy Award nomination for her cover of "O Segundo Sol," originally by Nando Reis. The song was included on her 2001 album Acustico MTV, a live recording for MTV Brasil similar to MTV Unplugged, which was also certified gold.
Amit Trivedi (Hindi: अमित त्रिवेदी) is an Indian film composer, musician, singer and lyricist, working in Bollywood. He is a Gujarati. After working as a theater and jingle composer and composing for non-film albums, he debuted as a film composer in the 2008 Hindi film Aamir, and shot to fame in the Hindi film music scene with his critically acclaimed work in the more popular Dev.D (2009), which earned him several accolades, including the 2010 National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Dev.D.
In his younger days, an electronic musical instrument fascinated Trivedi and he was slowly drawn towards music, mainly influenced by classical music. At 19-20, he began composing music. In college days joined the band Om, who performed at local gigs, small shows and live performances. They struck gold when Times Music took notice at one of their shows, and offered to launch their album. The album however did not fare well, due to lack of promotion. Eventually Trivedi went on to compose for theatre (Hindi, English and Gujarati plays), background music for television shows, live performances, dandiya shows, orchestras etc. He also had a brief stint composing advertisement jingles, for brands such as McDonalds and Airtel. After sound engineer and Audio Garage Recording Studio owner Arvind Vishwakarma introduced Trivedi to Sony BMG, he began composing music for non-film albums. As a part of his two year contract, Trivedi composed some tracks for Abhijeet Sawant’s Junoon and one song in Prashant Tamang's debut album. He arranged for many musician including Amartya Rahut for a marathi movie Uttarayan in 2004.
Gilberto Passos Gil Moreira (born June 26, 1942), better known as Gilberto Gil (Portuguese pronunciation: [ʒiɫˈbɛʁtu ʒiɫ]) or (Portuguese pronunciation: [ʒiu̯ˈbɛɾtʊ ʒiu̯]), is a Brazilian singer, guitarist, and songwriter, known for both his musical innovation and political commitment. From 2003 to 2008, he served as Brazil's Minister of Culture in the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Gil's musical style incorporates an eclectic range of influences, including Rock music, Brazilian genres including samba, African music, and reggae.
Gil started to play music as a child and was still a teenager when he joined his first band. He began his career as a bossa nova musician, and then grew to write songs that reflected a focus on political awareness and social activism. He was a key figure in the Música Popular Brasileira and tropicália movements of the 1960s, alongside artists such as longtime collaborator Caetano Veloso. The Brazilian military regime that took power in 1964 saw both Gil and Veloso as a threat, and the two were held for nine months in 1969 before they were told to leave the country. Gil moved to London, but returned to state of Bahia in 1972 and continued his musical career, as well as working as a politician and environmental advocate.
Jorge Ben Jor (born March 22, 1945 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian popular musician. His characteristic style fuses samba, funk, and rock into samba rock, with lyrics that blend humor and satire with often esoteric subject matter.
Born Jorge Duilio Lima Menezes, he first took the stage name Jorge Ben after his mother's name (of Ethiopian origin) but in the 1980s changed it to Jorge Ben Jor (commonly written Benjor), allegedly in response to an incident where some of his royalties accidentally went to American guitarist George Benson.
Jorge Ben obtained his first pandeiro (Brazil's most popular type of tambourine) when he was thirteen, and two years later, was singing in a church choir. He also took part as a pandeiro player in the blocos of Carnival, and from eighteen years of age, he began performing at parties and nightclubs with the guitar his mother gave him.
It was at one of those clubs in which he performed that his musical career took off. In 1963, Jorge came on stage and sang "Mas Que Nada" (or "no way") to a small crowd that happened to include an executive from the recording company, Philips. One week later, Jorge Ben's first single was released.
I was driving through the night
Into an endless tunnel of fog
When it dawned on me something was wrong
I was in a trance, hypnotized
Bored beyond belief, I was listening to the same old song
I know every lick, every word every nuance
I'm on first name terms with the crew
But I'd better get used to this poop du jour
Sure as hell they won't play anything new
Oh yes, I love you really
Classic Rock Radio
Oh, my dear it's time for bed
Time for you to go
Everyone is asleep
The pirates took to the water stole the charts
But sadly that didn't go down well with those upstairs
Who require loyalty, the establishment considered
That the uncontrolled appreciation of music
Was a danger to royalty, the mighty empire roared
As Cash 'n' Everitt on the high seas
Looked like they'd get blown out of the water
They did of course eventually come ashore
As meek as mice or to be more accurate as lambs to the slaughter
Oh yes, I love you really
I stand to attention
Oh, Fanny, I love you dearly
Something else I should mention?
You sweet thing
Let's not talk about MTV
I don't even want to start
I want to take a look at Classic Rock Radio
We're talking about the state of the art
Mr Grover 'n' Mr Gillian
You musta made a million
The night that Frank Zappa caught on fire
Could you tell us all about it
Keep it short and use my version
Or everyone out there'll think I'm a liar
We can speak about bananas for one second
Just because I understand
You have to get them off your chest
But in the meantime while you're talking
Could you do some more of these here ID's
And then this station might maintain some interest
Oh yes, I love you dearly
But why do you exist?
Oh yes, I love you really
And so I know that I have seen the ending of this story,I
see your ideology in technicolor glory.
What can I believe when all I can achieve,
Is leading my own revolution from the four walls built in
side my head?
I can't believe the lies you told me. (I can't believe.)
I can't believe that I believed you. (I can't believe.)
Who will see their soul on MTV?
So take a break today and make yourself at home forever,
The futures better in the past, it must be now or never.
If you take your eyes away from the prize,
You'd better turn the lights out, lock the doors, you
know that you'll be left for dead.
I can't believe the lies you told me. (I can't believe.)
I can't believe that I believed you. (I can't believe.)
Who will see their soul on MTV?
Their soul on MTV.
I can't believe the lies you told me. (Their soul on
MTV.)
I can't believe that I believed you.
Who will see their soul on MTV?
