The firing party he bravely did face,
Then the order rang out: "Present arms, fire,"
James Connolly fell into a ready made grave.
The black flag they hoisted, their cruel deed was over,
Gone was a man who loved Ireland so well,
There was many a sad heart in Dublin that morning,
When they murdered James Connolly, the Irish Rebel.
Many years have rolled by since that Easter rebellion,
When the guns of Britannia they loudly did speak.
And our bold Irish soldiers fought shoulder to shoulder
And the blood from their bodies flowed down Sackville Street
The Four Courts of Dublin the enemy bombarded,
The spirit of freedom they tried hard to quell,
When above all the noise came a voice "No Surrender",
'T was the voice of James Connolly, the Irish Rebel.

TG4 - Seachtar na Cásca, a documentary about the True Story of the 1916 Easter Rising and those that were involved.
James Connolly (Séamas Ó Conghaile) was born in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh, Scotland, to Irish immigrant parents. At aged 11 he left school to start work as street cleaner before at the age of 14 enlisting in the British Army. It was here that he developed a deep hatred for the British Army that would last his entire life and when he heard that his regiment was being deployed to India he deserted. He met a young woman called Lellie Reynolds in which he would marry in 1890. He established a small cobblers business in 1895 but it never lasted. He had become heavily involved in Scottish Trade Unionism and Socialism and by now was becoming a well known figure head of Scottish Socialism. He moved to Dublin in 1895 after he heard that the Dublin Socialist was looking for a full time Secretary. At his instigation, the club quickly evolved into the Irish Socialist Republican Party (ISRP).
In 1903 Connolly moved to the United States where he became involved in Socialism around the shipyards and industrial centres around New York. But he always felt that his work was to be done in Ireland and in 1910 returned to Ireland. On his return to Ireland in 1910 he was right-hand man to fellow-syndicalist James Larkin in the Irish Transport and General Workers Union. And by 1913 both him an Larkin were listed as instigators of the strike during the Lockout in Dublin. Following the 1913 Lockout Connolly, along with an ex-British officer, Jack White, founded the Irish Citizen Army (ICA). He also founded the Irish Labour Party as the political wing of the Irish Trade Union Congress in 1912.
Connolly stood aloof from the leadership of the Irish Volunteers. He considered them too bourgeois and unconcerned with Ireland's economic independence. In 1916, thinking they were merely posturing and unwilling to take decisive action against Britain, he attempted to goad them into action by threatening to send the ICA against the British Empire alone, if necessary. This alarmed the members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, who had already infiltrated the Volunteers and had plans for an insurrection that very year. In order to talk Connolly out of any such rash action, the IRB leaders, including Tom Clarke and Patrick Pearse, met with Connolly to see if an agreement could be reached. During the meeting, the IRB and the ICA agreed to act together at Easter of that year.
When the Easter Rising occurred on 24 April 1916, Connolly was Commandant of the Dublin Brigade. As the Dublin Brigade had the most substantial role in the rising, he was de facto commander-in-chief. Following the surrender, he said to other prisoners: "Don't worry. Those of us that signed the proclamation will be shot. But the rest of you will be set free." James Connolly was executed on the 12th May 1916 in Kilmainham Gaol.

A tribute to my hero, James Connolly, The Scotsman who was instrumental in Ireland's fight for a free, socialist republic. This video features pictures of Connolly's home in Edinburgh's Cowgate, but mostly features iconic images from 1916 in Ireland, and a couple of Hibs pics, as Connolly was an original Hibs fan, present as a small boy On Friday 6th August 1875 at a meeting held in ‘The Catholic Institute’ in St. Mary’s Street, Edinburgh (Now St. Mary’s Street Halls), when Hibs were formed - Hibernian FC's 1st 'celebrity' fan. He later carried Hibs' kit hamper to matches and often went into long bouts of depression whenever his beloved Hibs lost. Connolly's writings home from his time in America are full of questions about how Hibs are getting on.
A good soldier, a great revolutionary, a committed socialist and a bloody good Hibby.
Socialism or death!
Audio is track 9 'irish citizen army' from the album 'marching down Sackville Street' by The Blarney Pilgrims and features Connolly's last statement before he was executed.
NOT A FOOTBALL VIDEO!! we don't sing stuff like this at Hibs games by the way.

Black 47 anthemic tribute to James Connolly - socialist union leader, one of those who led the Easter 1916 uprising and were subsequently executed by the British. Black 47 recaptures the working class spirit and passion of James Connolly in their song.
Larry Kirwan, lead singer of the band who wrote the song explains:
With [1916 Irish socialist hero] James Connolly, I hated the old standard song "The Ballad of James Connolly." As a socialist myself, I resented that he had been railroaded by tears-in-the-beer nationalism. I thought that Connolly would have resented that, too. I always have to find a way to enter [the person's] spirit, as it were. With Connolly, it was quite simple. What must he have felt-knowing that he was going to be executed-about leaving his family fatherless and penniless? Once I found that chink in the armor, the rest was just a matter of diligent and knowledgeable songwriting.

The Ballad Of James Connolly - The Irish Rebel:- " Connolly, a forlorn figure was propped up in the chair to prevent him falling off. As he was being blindfolded, Father Aloysius thought how brave and calm Connolly was. The firing squad was marched in and stood to attention. Some of the soldiers in the firing squad were visibly upset and shocked to see the terrible condition of the man they were about to shoot. Father Aloysius said to Connolly: " Will you pray for these men who are about to shoot you?" Connolly replied: " I will pray for all brave men who do their duty." Words which for Father Aloysius seemed to echo The Lord's own prayer as He hung on the Cross - " Father, forgive them for they know what they do." Father Aloysius then took his place behind the firing squad. All the priests in attendance stood side by side as Connolly seemed to lift himself a little in the chair and straighten in preparation for the end. The firing squad aimed and fired. Connolly slumped in the chair against the ropes which bound him there, his body twitching.
The British officer next to the priests stepped forward quietly, softly and with an innate dignity, his pistol raised. The final bullet exploded in Connolly's brain and shattered forever the last of the chains that had bound Ireland."

All that copy right that no one care about
lyrics in description as well
A great crowd had gathered, outside of Kilmainham,
Their heads all uncovered, they knelt to the ground.
For inside that grim prison lay a brave Irish solider,
His life for his country about to lay down
[2]
He went to his death like a true son of Ireland,
The firing party he bravely did face.
Then the order ran out, present arms and fire,
James Connolly fell into a ready made grave.
[3]
The black flag was hoisted, the cruel deed was over.
Gone was a man, who loved Ireland so well,
There was many a sad heart, in Dublin that morning,
When they murdered James Connelly, the Irish rebel
[4]
God's curse on you England, you cruel hearted monster.
Your deeds they would shame all the devils in hand
There were no flowers blooming but the shamrock was growing
At the grave of James Connelly, the Irish rebel
[5]
The four courts of Dublin, the English bombarded,
The spirit of freedom they tried hard to quell,
But above all the dim came the cry no surrender,
T'was the voice of James Connelly, the Irish rebel.

Behan discusses James Connolly and the 1916 rebellion in Dublin - pausing only to ramble about Chinese socialism - while performing a couple of personal compositions, including his haunting prison ballad (The Auld Triangle) and another song recounting his involvement in an IRA operation at the tender age of 14 (Bonfire on the Border).
The recording was apparently aimed at an American audience and Behan clearly relishes talking of Lenin in connection with the Rising: "I hope the record is not smashed at the point of mentioning his name," he quips.
Perhaps this comment was only half in jest as it was released during the 1950s at the height of the anti-communist hysteria in the US.
I was disappointed to find such a dearth of Behan material on YouTube, so decided to put something together. Hope you enjoy it although it was Brendan who did the hard work, so here's to his memory and an Phoblacht abu!

Gerry Regan http://www.thenewwildgeese.com interviews historian and playwright Ann Matthews, who discusses her play "Lockout," now at The New Theatre in Dublin. Featuring characters James Larkin, James Connolly and her granny Ellen Byrne, Matthews' "Lockout" explores the impact of the nearly five-month-long conflict between Dublin's bosses and its beleaguered working class. And let us all know if you have some inspiring story in your own family's 'labor' history.

Directed and edited by Marcus Howard. A 15 minute selection of interviews with relatives and concerned people about why Moore Street needs to be saved. Moore Street was the last stand for the Volunteers who escaped from the burning GPO. Yet Moore Street is at risk of being sold to the highest bidder under Nama and is at risk of having the terrace demolished for yet another shopping centre. Many interviewed highlight how this generation does not have the right to throw this history away for future generations. The Save Moore Street From Demolition campaign have been out for over 42 weeks collecting over 10,000 signatures every Saturday to prevent it's demolition.
Interviews with 1916 relatives of John Stokes, James Connolly, The O'Rahilly, Ned Lyons, Mick Lyons, Martin Kelly, John Halpin, Willie Halpin, Elizabeth O'Farrell, Thomas MacDonagh, Harry Boland and from many concerned citizens.
