Oliver Ellsworth (April 29, 1745 – November 26, 1807) was an American lawyer and politician, a revolutionary against British rule, a drafter of the United States Constitution, United States Senator from Connecticut, and the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. While at the Federal Convention, Ellsworth moved to strike the word National from the motion made by Edmund Randolph of Virginia. Randolph had moved successfully to call the government the National Government of United States. Ellsworth moved that the government should continue to be called the United States Government.
Ellsworth was born in Windsor, Connecticut, to Capt. David and Jemima (née Leavitt) Ellsworth. He entered Yale in 1762, but transferred to the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) at the end of his second year. He continued to study theology and, while attending, helped found the American Whig–Cliosophic Society along with Aaron Burr and William Paterson. He received his A.B. degree, Phi Beta Kappa after 2 years. Soon afterward, however, Ellsworth turned to the law. After four years of study, he was admitted to the bar in 1771 and later became a successful lawyer and politician.
Ellsworth may refer to:
Named after Lincoln Ellsworth:
The Oliver Ellsworth Homestead, also known as Elmwood, is a historic house museum at 747 Palisado Avenue in Windsor, Connecticut. It was the home of the American lawyer and politician Oliver Ellsworth from 1782 to 1807, and was designated a National Historic Landmark because of this association. Ellsworth (1745–1807) helped draft the United States Constitution, served as the third Chief Justice of the United States, and was a United States Senator from Connecticut.
The Georgian clapboarded house includes a portico with Tuscan columns supporting a gable roof and two brick chimneys near the gable ends of the wood-shinqled roof. The name Elmwood derives from the thirteen elm trees Ellsworth planted in honor of the thirteen colonies.
Elmwood was visited by two sitting Presidents: George Washington (on October 21, 1789) and John Adams (October 3, 1799). The house was occupied by the Ellsworth family until 1903 when it was given to the Connecticut Daughters of the American Revolution, Inc The homestead was restored in the late 1980s and early 1990s and is now a museum and Matthies Hall can be used as a meeting location between May and October.
Oliver is a given name. It is also used as a surname (see Oliver (surname)), in particular of a Scottish sept (see Oliver (Scottish surname)).
It may also refer to:
James William Ellsworth (Hudson, Ohio, October 13, 1849 – June 2, 1925 at Villa Palmieri in Florence, Italy) was an American coal mine owner and banker.
He attended the Western Reserve College and Preparatory School (now known as Western Reserve Academy) and, upon graduation in 1868, he took a job working as a clerk for a wholesale drug company in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 1869 he joined the coal mining firm Ames & Co. of which he acquired ownership interest in 1873. The newly renamed James W. Ellsworth & Co. enjoyed enormous success with mines operating in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia and offices in Chicago, New York City and Pittsburgh.
He served as the president of the Union National Bank of Chicago from 1896 to 1898 during which time he was a signatory of National Bank notes.
Ellsworth owned a number of residences including ones in Chicago, New York City, Hudson, Ohio, Switzerland and Florence, Italy.
Ellsworth was also a member of the famous Jekyll Island Club (aka The Millionaires Club) on Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Here, it is revealed how power is ultimately achieved and maintained in the sociopolitical discourse of human events through the corruption of man's character and desire for moral purpose. Noah Webster, Jr. (October 16, 1758 – May 28, 1843) was an American lexicographer, textbook pioneer, English-language spelling reformer, political writer, editor, and prolific author. He has been called the "Father of American Scholarship and Education". His blue-backed speller books taught five generations of American children how to spell and read, secularizing their education. According to Ellis (1979), he gave Americans "a secular catechism to the nation-state." Webster's name has become synonymous with "dictionary" in the United States, especially the modern Merriam-Webster dictionary that was first published in 1828 as An American Dictionary of the English Language. Webster was born in the Western Division of Hartford (which became West Hartford, Connecticut) to an established fami...

Charles Goodyear (December 18, 1800 – July 1, 1860) was an American self-taught chemist and manufacturing engineer who developed vulcanized rubber, for which he received patent number 3633 from the United States Patent Office on June 15, 1844. Though Goodyear is often credited with the invention of vulcanized rubber, modern evidence has proven that the Mesoamericans used stabilized rubber for balls and other objects as early as 1600 BC.,[4] and Thomas Hancock had a patent pending for a vulcanization process 8 weeks before Goodyear. Goodyear's discovery of the vulcanization process was accidental, after five years of searching for a more stable rubber and stumbling upon the effectiveness of heating after Thomas Hancock. In the year 1852 Goodyear went to Europe, a trip that he had long pl...
