NSW Cups Vodafone Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks
NSW Cups Vodafone Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks
HISTORY will be witnessed by a crowd of around 3000 when the Vodafone Warriors meet Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in a NSW Cup league match at Rugby Park tomorrow. The "home" team will also be keen for history to be repeated after thumping the defending champions 44-6 in April. Water tends to flow quickly under the bridge when it comes to league, and victory will be the Warriors' priority. The Rohan Smith-coached team have been riding a rollercoaster when it comes to results this year. Heading into tomorrow's 3pm round 14 clash at Gisborne's home of rugby union, the Warriors are sitting sixth on the 13-team table. With a record of seven wins, five losses and a draw, they are on 17 points, just one ahead of Cronulla and five behind leaders Penrith Panthers. The Warriors and Cronulla suffered defeats last weekend — the Sharks squandering a 22-4 lead to lose 23-22 to Illawarra Cutters, the Warriors upset 28-0 by a Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs side sitting second from the bottom. The NSW Cup features reserve grade or clubs affiliated to NRL clubs. It is the stepping stone to an NRL career for many of the rising young stars of the game. Tomorrow's line-ups for the first NSW Cup match to be played in Gisborne will feature a multitude of players with NRL experience. The Warriors will boast eight players who have played first-grade league — rookie Kiwis hooker Siliva Havili, outstanding halfback Tuimoala Lolohea, former Queensland State of Origin representative Dane Nielsen, fellow centre Dominique Peyroux, standoff Carlos Tuimavave, props Upu Poching and Charlie Gubb and loose forward John Palavi. Havili got limited time for the Warriors' NRL side in their loss to Souths in Perth last weekend while Gubb was 18th man and Lolohea was also brought into the top side as cover. Their return will be a huge boost to the side who are seen as one of the most potent attacking units in the competition. The Warriors also welcome back powerhouse forward Sam Lousi, who has been out since April 26 with a broken hand. There is a local connection to the side. Captain and fullback Steve Waetford grew up in Ruatoria and attended Makarika School where his parents Warren and Rona were teachers. Cronulla also have players with NRL experience with the Sharks and Storm, including Samoan international halfback Penani Manumalealii. Like their NRL team, the Warriors have the disadvantage of a lot more travel than other sides — Gisborne will be their 10th trip so far this season — but coach Smith said that was not an issue. "We've done pretty well away from home," Smith said. "The travel doesn't seem to bother the boys too much. It's a good chance to bond together and enjoy each other's company." Gisborne mayor Meng Foon, who spearheaded the successful campaign to get the Warriors here, said it was "a tremendous opportunity" and encouraged locals to get behind it. "It's a real honour for us to be hosting a game of this calibre," said Foon, a New Zealand Rugby League board member. "It's important for our community to show up in force as other national sporting organisations are looking at Gisborne and eyeing up more provincial games and events." Warriors general manager football and Kiwis great Dean Bell — the captain of the inaugural Warriors team in 1995 — said they had jumped at the chance of taking a NSW Cup game outside Auckland for the first time. He reiterated that Gisborne's bid to host the game had been "by far the best". "It's something the New South Wales Rugby League and the NRL were keen on and it's part of how we want to spread the game around the country." Both teams fly into Gisborne tomorrow morning. There is a curtain-raiser between Gisborne-Tairawhiti club sides the Stallions and the Falcons at 10am, followed by kids' games. Comments- published: 14 Jun 2014

MARK MEXICO INTERVIEW - CRONULLA SHARKS
MARK MEXICO INTERVIEW - CRONULLA SHARKS
He runs hard and tackles hard, both strong attributes for a rugby league front rower, with Mark Mexico doing all the right things in his quest to one day become an NRL player. Brought to the Sharks via the PNG Hunters who now compete in the Queensland Cup competition, maybe coincidently, maybe not, Mexico has played a part in three consecutive wins for the Sharks NSW Cup team since arriving at Cronulla, victories which have the team back in the top eight after a slow start to their 2014 campaign. He now has his sights set on the NRL and with determination in his eyes, there is every chance he will ultimately achieve his goal. Sharks TV caught up with Mexico for this week's first instalment of Friday 'Face to Face' discussing his background, his desire to play at the highest level and how he is settling into life in the 'big smoke'. Already a fan favourite, see what Mexico had to say on Friday 'Face to Face, now playing on Sharks TV.- published: 10 May 2014
