Music composed by Albert Hague. Rex Stewart (t) / Mousey Alexander (d) / Leonard Gaskin (b) / Bucky Pizzarelli (g) / John Bunch (p) / Joe Venuto (marimba) From the back cover (spoiler below for you who haven't seen the play from which this music comes): ["February, 1959 was a good month. Especially for a group of charming and talented people who stayed awake all night to read '... a walloping hit.' (Robert Coleman, Mirror) '... best musical comedy of the season.' (Richard Watts, Post) '... firecracker of a musical...' (Walter Kerr, Herald Tribune) '... an excellent plot... good songs, a smartly handsome production... tip-top musical.' (John Chapman, Daily News). This can go on for pages. The theatre, the 46th Street Theatre, New York City. The show, Redhead, starring the magnificent Gwen Verdon and co-starring Richard Kiley. The story is a great comedy with a wonderful mystery or rather a great mystery mixed with a wonderful comedy. It's actually a murder mystery, a romance, a comedy all put together into a musical triumph. Essie Whimple (played by Gwen Verdon) is a rather wistful young lady, very plain who makes wax figures in a London museum. This wax works belongs to her two aunts, the Simpson sisters. Now Essie has a tendency of seeing into the future. Her best vision is about her prince charming, a well set individual, strong, handsome. Richard Kiley comes to life as that man. While she has these visions she also happens to have one of the strangler who is terrifying London at the time. She creates an exhibit of this fiend who has murdered a dancing girl appearing at the Odeon Theatre. Well, everything works out beautifully... she traps the killer and gets her man. The winner... why the audience, of course. Rex Stewart comes into his own on this album. He and his gang just sat right down and played for the fun of it all. Good music is fun and you'll feel a beat going through your toes. The artistry of Rex Stewart comes out for a wonderful sound. Rex has come a long way since he blew trumpet with Duke Ellington. For another enjoyable session with Rex Stewart, we recommend Design DCF-1010 -- The Golden Era of Dixieland Jazz -- Vol. II. A must for any collection."] The propaganda gets even deeper: ["'...A REVOLUTION IN RECORDING...' One of the first Bob Fosse choreographed films, "Damn Yankees" from 1958.
This is a tribute to legendary actress, singer, dancer and Bob Fosse muse Gwen Verdon. Verdon's success was primarily in the 50s and 60s where she won a total of 4 Tony Awards. These were for "Can Can", "Damn Yankees", "New Girl In Town" and "Redhead". Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse were married from 1960 to 1987. Verdon became closely associated with Fosse's unique choreography which he tailored for her. This is a studio recording of "If My Friends Could See Me Now" from the musical "Sweet Charity". Along with this Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields classic are some wonderful pictures of the great Gwen Verdon. Enjoy!! Thanks For Your Comments.

The Examiner 2014-07-20Gwenyth Evelyn “Gwen” Verdon (January 13, 1925 – October 18, 2000) was an actress and dancer who won four Tony awards for her musical comedy performances. With flaming red hair and an endearing quaver in her voice, Verdon was a critically acclaimed dancer on Broadway in the 1950s and 1960s. She is also strongly identified with her second husband, director–choreographer Bob Fosse, remembered as the dancer–collaborator–muse for whom he choreographed much of his work and as the guardian of his legacy after his death.
Verdon was born in Culver City, California, the second child of Gertrude Lilian (née Standring; October 24, 1896 – October 16, 1956) and Joseph William Verdon (December 31, 1896 – June 23, 1978), who were British immigrants to the United States by way of Canada. Her brother was William Farrell Verdon (August 1, 1923 – June 10, 1991). The Verdon family could be described as "showpeople." Her father was an electrician at MGM Studios, and her mother was a former vaudevillian of the Denishawn dance troupe, as well as a dance teacher.
I can't take it, I'm so lonely girl, I need you so
And I can't take it and I wonder why you had to go
And baby, every night I wake up cryin'
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, you on my mind
I remember all the good times we used have before
I remember how my heart, my very soul cries out for more
And baby, every night I wake up cryin'
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, you on my mind
I remember all the good times we used have before
I remember how my heart, my very soul cries out for more
And baby, all your love for me is dying
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, you on my mind
And baby, all your love for me is dying
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, you on my mind
I can't take it, I'm so lonely girl, I need you so
And I can't take it and I wonder why you had to go
And baby, every night I wake up cryin', oh
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, you on my mind
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, you on my mind
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, you on my mind
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, you on my mind
I always wanted my name in the papers
Before Aremus, I used to date this well to do ugly bootlegger
He used to like to take me out and show me off
Ugly guys like to do that
Once it said in the paper
"Gangland's Al Capelli
Seen with cute red-headed Corenne"
That was me, I clipped it out and saved it
Look I'm gonna tell you the truth
Not that the truth really matters
But I'm gonna tell you anyway
The thing is see, I'm older than I ever intended to be
And all my life I wanted to be a dancer
In Vaudeville, ooh yeah
Have my own act, but no, no, no
They always turned me down
It was one big world full of no, life
Then Amus came along, sweet, safe, Amus who never says no
You know, some guys are like mirrors
And when I catch myself in Amus's face
I'm always a kid, you could love a guy like that
Look now I gotta tell you
Now I hope this ain't too crude
In the bed department, Amus was zero
I mean when we went to bed
He made love to me like he was
Fixing a carburator or something
I love ya, honey I love ya
Anyway to make a long story short
I started fooling around
Then I started screwing around
Which is fooling around without dinner
I gave up the Vaudeville idea
Because well, after all those years
He sorta figured opportunities just passed you by
Ooh, it ain't, oh, no, no, no, no, babe, it ain't
If this film guy gets me off
And with all this publicity, now I got me a world full of yes
The name on everybody's lips is gonna be Roxie
The Lady raking in the chips is gonna be Roxie
I'm gonna be a celebrity that means somebody everyone knows
They're gonna recognize my eyes
My hair, my teeth, my boobs, my nose
From just some dumb mechanic's wife
I'm gonna be Roxie
Who says that murder's not an art
And who in case she doesn't hang
Can say she started with a bang
Roxie heart
I gotta get me some boys
I'm gonna get me a whole bunch of boys
They're gonna wait outside in line to get to see Roxie
Think of those autographs outside, good luck to you, Roxie
And I'll appear in a Lavaliere that goes all the way down to my waist
Here a ring, there a ring, everywhere a ring-a-ling
But always in the best of taste
I'm a star and they love me and I love them
And they love me for loving them
And I love them for loving me and we love each other
That's because none of us got enough love in our childhood
And that's showbiz, kid
She's giving up her hum-drum life
I'm gonna be a Roxie
