Da lag es für Nintendo, die gerade den Launch des neuen Handhelds "Nintendo DS" vorbereiteten nahe, Mario 64 als Remake zum Launch anzubieten, um die Konsole vom Start an ordentlich zu versorgen. Auf der E3 2004 noch als "Super Mario 64 x4" angekündigt, nannte man es letztlich schlicht "Super Mario 64 DS" und schickte es in Europa am 11.03.2005 als Launch-Titel für den DS in die Läden. Weltweit griffen 10,18 Mio Menschen zu. Warum es zunächst "Super Mario 64 x4" heißen sollte, ist leicht erklärt. Mario 64 DS ist nicht nur ein simples Remake, Nintendo EAD hat dem Meilenstein einige Neuerungen spendiert. Neben kleineren neuen Kursen, der Geburt der Silbersterne und 30 neuen Sternen, sodass man insgesamt nun auf 150 kommt, ist es im DS-Remake möglich neben Mario auch seinen Bruder Luigi, Kumpel Yoshi und Vetter Wario zu spielen. Jeder Charakter hat seine Vorzüge und Nachteile bzw. braucht an bestimmten Stellen die Hilfe eines anderen. Im Spiel versteckte Mützen erlauben außerdem eine sofortige Verwandlung in einen anderen Charakter, je nachdem welche Mütze gefunden wurde. Allerdings nur so lange, bis man einen gegnerischen Treffer einsteckt oder den jeweiligen Kurs verlässt. Man bemühte sich das Spiel hübscher als das Original aussehen zu lassen. Das bemerkt man vor allem bei den Schattierungen, den neuen Ideen und dem Feinschliff in der Detailarbeit. Da der Nintendo DS aber nur ein Steuerkreuz besaß, gab es zumindest in der Steuerung hin und wieder mal Frustmomente. Da tröst eine alternative Toluch-Steuerung kaum hinweg.
