The Examiner 2015-04-05The Road to Serfdom is a book written by the Austrian-born economist and philosopher Friedrich von Hayek (1899–1992) between 1940–1943, in which he "warned of the danger of tyranny that inevitably results from government control of economic decision-making through central planning," and in which he argues that the abandonment of individualism, classical liberalism, and freedom inevitably leads to socialist or fascist oppression and tyranny and the serfdom of the individual. Significantly, Hayek challenged the general view among British academics that fascism was a capitalist reaction against socialism, instead arguing that fascism and socialism had common roots in central economic planning and the power of the state over the individual.
The Road to Serfdom is among the most influential and popular expositions of market libertarianism and remains a popular and influential work in contemporary discourse, selling over two million copies, and remaining a best-seller.
The Road to Serfdom was to be the popular edition of the second volume of Hayek’s treatise entitled “The Abuse and Decline of Reason,” and the title was inspired by the writings of the 19th century French classical liberal thinker Alexis de Tocqueville on the “road to servitude.” The book was first published in Britain by Routledge in March 1944, during World War II, and was quite popular, leading Hayek to call it “that unobtainable book,” also due in part to wartime paper rationing. It was published in the United States by the University of Chicago Press in September 1944 and achieved great popularity. At the arrangement of editor Max Eastman, the American magazine Reader's Digest published an abridged version in April 1945, enabling The Road to Serfdom to reach a wider popular audience beyond academics.
The Road is a 2006 novel by American writer Cormac McCarthy. It is a post-apocalyptic tale of a journey of a father and his young son over a period of several months, across a landscape blasted by an unspecified cataclysm that has destroyed most of civilization and, in the intervening years, almost all life on Earth. The novel was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Fiction in 2006.
The book was adapted to a film by the same name in 2009, directed by John Hillcoat, starring Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
An unnamed father and his young son journey across a grim post-apocalyptic landscape, some years after a major unexplained cataclysm has destroyed civilization and most life on Earth. The land is filled with ash and devoid of living animals and vegetation. Many of the remaining human survivors have resorted to cannibalism, scavenging the detritus of city and country alike for flesh. The boy's mother, pregnant with him at the time of the disaster, gave up hope and committed suicide some time before the story begins, despite the father's pleas. Much of the book is written in the third person, with references to "the father" and "the son" or to "the man" and "the boy".
Milton Friedman (July 31, 1912 – November 16, 2006) was an American economist, statistician, and author who taught at the University of Chicago for more than three decades. He was a recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, and is known for his research on consumption analysis, monetary history and theory, and the complexity of stabilization policy. As a leader of the Chicago school of economics, he influenced the research agenda of the economics profession. A survey of economists ranked Friedman as the second most popular economist of the twentieth century behind John Maynard Keynes, and The Economist described him as "the most influential economist of the second half of the 20th century…possibly of all of it."
Friedman's challenges to what he later called "naive Keynesian" (as opposed to New Keynesian) theory began with his 1950s reinterpretation of the consumption function, and he became the main advocate opposing activist Keynesian government policies. In the late 1960s he described his own approach (along with all of mainstream economics) as using "Keynesian language and apparatus" yet rejecting its "initial" conclusions. During the 1960s he promoted an alternative macroeconomic policy known as "monetarism". He theorized there existed a "natural" rate of unemployment, and argued that governments could increase employment above this rate (e.g., by increasing aggregate demand) only at the risk of causing inflation to accelerate. He argued that the Phillips curve was not stable and predicted what would come to be known as stagflation. Friedman argued that, given the existence of the Federal Reserve, a constant small expansion of the money supply was the only wise policy.
The road is fuckin' hard,
The road is fuckin' tough-ah,
There's no question that-eh
It is rough, rough stuff.
It's the fuckin' road my friend
But it's the only road I know.
When I'm lunchin' on a tasty boosh
Right after the show.
You g-go go go!
The road is fuckin' hard,
It's also really fuckin' tough,
There's no question that
It don't take no guff.
The road is a be-a-itch my friend
But it's the only fuckin' road I know,
When I'm snackin' on a tasty boosh
Right after the show.
You g-go go go!
I met a tasty baby in Michigan.
We screwed two times then I left.
Sometimes I think of my baby in Michigan.
Why can't I stay in one place
For more than two days.
Why?!
Because I'm talkin' about the road.
There's a road with two yellow lines
They go on for years
And when people there smile and wave
It's not like, back home
In their doorway, where the evening sky
Lights up my room, lights up my room
Lights up my room, lights up my
But times are fierce and times are fine
Yeah, it goes that way
But, down some highway
Yeah, down some lonely road
In that old fashioned way
In the garden, yeah, where the evening sky
Lights up my room, lights up my room
Lights up my room, lights up my
But the darkness let's him see here
All of the people they never knew
So, float into space
Falling through puddles and places I've never been
Will my soul be angry?
When you die do you feel alright?
In the garden, yeah, where the evening sky
Lights up my room, lights up my room
Lights up my room, lights up my
There's a road with two yellow lines
It goes on for years
And when people there smile and wave
Oh, it's not like, back home
In their doorway, where the evening sky
Lights up my room, lights up my room
Before you go
There are some things I should tell you
And prepare you for what you might not have seen
In the dreams you’ve had about this crazy world
We’re living in
Stay out of trouble
Keep your eyes wide open
For a different scene
And who you might meet
Love the road you’re traveling on
And believe not
That everything is clear when it’s all gone
And if there’s one thing
You’re sure you want to leave behind
Let it not be the memory
Of you and me
And if there’s one thing
You’re sure about
Let it be the time
You spent with me
Take it slow
Something might come and lift you from your feet
And if you think you know
Then it’s time to let life show you
A little bit more
Was this the road you were looking for
And have you finally seen it all
The crowded streets
The looser streaks
And an empty soul
With no show
You wanna play a game?
Well, here's how it goes:
You can be a little crazy
As long as you know
That I'm a real man, baby
And I need it rough
You do it like this,
I can't get enough
You don't need a hat to play this game
But you can leave your boots on
It's all the same
Jeans aren't required
And they won't be missed
You can be a bad girl
I promise you this
If you wanna be a cowgirl, get on top
Give me love, give me love, baby don't ever stop
You can ride all night in the rodeo
And if you make it to the morning, baby
Don't you know
You're a cowgirl
Grab on and hold tight
You can use your nails
I got a set of handcuffs
And it never fails
It's gonna get a little harder when I'm almost there
Pardon me girl, when I pull your hair
You wanna talk real dirty while your moving with me
You're doing so good, I can already see
If you wanna be a cowgirl, get on top
Give me love, give me love, baby don't ever stop
You can ride all night in the rodeo
And if you make it to the morning, baby
Don't you know
You're a cowgirl
It gets wild at the rodeo
But we don't clown
Cause I'll be tossing you up
And I'll be licking you down
You're in a hurry
Don't worry
Pull em to the side
Move like I like it
Taking me for a ride
Baby girls being naughty
It's a beautiful thing
I'm gonna smack that ass
And make you sing
If you wanna be a cowgirl, get on top
Give me love, give me love, baby don't ever stop
You can ride all night in the rodeo
And if you make it to the morning, baby
Don't you know
You're a cowgirl
Verse
Everyday I make my way
Through the ups and the downs
I get broken and tired, I lose my way
Then I hear you say
Chorus
When the road is long
And you can’t go on
You can depend on me
I know in my heart
You’ll come back to the start
You can depend on me
Verse
You’ve always been a friend to me
You got me through
And when I am down and don’t understand
I can still hear you say
CHORUS
Bridge
Not a day goes by
I don’t miss your smile
Or the way that you changed my life
But what can I do
I still hear you say
I can still remember every song you played
Long ago when we were younger and we rocked the night away.
How could I see a future then, where you would not grow old?
Such fire in our belly, such a hunger in souls.
I guess I've grown to love you in those words so often tired
Seen that we were traveling under some old lucky sign
I know I didn't say it then and no one was to blame
But the road we shared together once will never be the same.
Hey all along the way
Won't be coming round again. Hey was a song I played. And on the wings of a song, I'll fly away.
I wondered in the wilderness for a while I was so lost.
To everything there is a season and every blessing has it's cost.
So I took what you left to me and put it to some use
When looking for an answer with those three chords and the truth.
I come down from the moutain I come walking in your shoes.
I was taken for a glambler when I had no more to loose
For he put me on that path and how could I refuse.
And I would spend my whole life out here working on the blues.
Hey... Ay Hey. Hey. Ay. Hey. Heeeeeeeeey.
So I carried on, you can't be haunted by the past.
People come people, go and nothing ever lasts.
But I still think about you wonder where you are.
Can you see me from some place up there among the stars?
But down here under heaven there never was a chart
To guide our way accross this crooked highway of the (part?)
And if it's only all about the journy in the end
On that road I'm glad I came to know my old friend.
Hey all along the way
So you keep me glowing in
Any time
Take everything left behind
Getting over inexistance
Vanish world on time
Put on your gears and walk toward the sun
Ignore the stranger feeling in air
Come on, take my hand
Hope for survival
And you will soon get there
Now we take a rest to leave another day
(I wanna wish you fine)
But in many time
You have to let me go
(That is right)
Though the day is dark for you to walk alone
(I wanna wish you fine)
But in many time
You have to let me go
Now you see what's going on
All this time
Ashes covering strings of ground
Getting over inexistance
Vanish world on time
Put on your gears and walk toward the sun
Although we cannot hope for the best
Turning my stone
For you to see the end
And we will soon get there
Now we take a rest to leave another day
(I wanna wish you fine)
But in many time
You have to let me go
(That is right)
Though the day is dark for you to walk alone
(I wanna wish you fine)
But in many time
You have to let me go
Don't...
Now you don't have to say
Please don't
Now you don't have to say
Now we take a rest to leave another day
(I wanna wish you fine)
But in many time
You have to let me go
(That is right)
Though the day is dark for you to walk alone
(I wanna wish you fine)
But in many time
You have to let me go
Don't make me to cry... !
(Now leave me to cry)
Don't make me to cry... !
(Now leave me to cry)
Don't make me to cry... !
(Now leave me to cry)
Don't make me to cry... !
(Now leave me to cry)
Don't...
Now you don't have to say
Please don't
Sometimes I find myself
Traveling a highway
Wondering which way to I ought to go
Roadmap is weary
Road signs are hazy
But my brothers are beside me
On the road
The radio is on
The sun is setting slowly
High wires sing and galaxies explode
And in the growing darkness
We share our stories, share our load
We're a band we're a man
We're on the road
I've traveled on the road and don't know where it goes
I've traveled narrow streets and freeways to the coast
And still we travel on wherever the road goes
We go together we are
Still on the road
Thousands of us, millions of us
Travel on the road
There are many lanes and exits
On the way
Some of us go and some of us stay
Stay traveling on the road
On the road
The number of [Incomprehensible]
And we cling to our tried and true and
You know we're creatures of comfort and
We find our patterns and stick to what we know best
But there's a big wide beautiful world out there
For those that want it, it's out there
Don't talk, don't say nothin'
I've just packed my things and I'm headed for somethin'
Where I'm goin' well I don't really know
The road is callin' so I've got to go
Yes, the road is callin' so I've got to go
We bid farewell as the winds blew like hell
I said, ?We'd meet again like some storybook tale?
But no, we don't talk, we don't say nothin'
I just packed my things and go headed for somethin'
But where I was headed well, I didn't really see
The road was callin' and I was on my way
Yes, the road was callin' and I was on my way
So don't talk, don't say nothin'
I've just grabbed my things and pretend like there's nothin'
Between us no more as I walked out the door
She closed it behind me and cried on the floor
And I couldn't talk, no I couldn't say nothin'
I just closed my eyes and headed blindly towards somethin'
'Cause where I'm goin', well, I don't really know
The road is callin' so I've got to go
I take my time, cause I know where I'm going
I know the sound, cause I've been there before
It's like trying to teach an old dog a brand new set of
tricks
You know your feelings may change, but the patterns
will stay
That's why I keep going down the same road
Then I've been expecting changes
You know I keep going down the same road
Like I don't know where it's taking me
It's the same old road
Don't try to take me where I dont wanna go
I'm tired of breaking, and my spirit's too old
Now I don't wanna let you down with false hope
Cause I feel those things, your young heart dreams,
I've got to let you go
That's why I keep going down the same road
Then I've been expecting changes
You know I keep going down the same road
Like I don't know where it's taking me
It's the same old road
The same old line I can't escape this time
I keep moving on, for something more, this I can't
complete
You know I keep going down the same road
Then I've been expecting changes, changes
I keep going down the same road
Like I don't know where it's taking me
It's the same old road
It's the same thing taking me
I'm going down the same old road, the same thing, and I
can't escape it
I cant run..
I live there, and it's my home I'm never leaving
And it's the same old road, I've been there
And I'm gonna be, what it's making me
It's the same old road, I live here
And I gotta be, what it made me
Far away from home Bound to nothing - a little bit strange
Got no reason to be upset In this jungle you found The key to be - free That's what you wanna be - free That's your philosophy - free Till infinity - free
Choose to go - left home one day Your decision: on the road you'll stay Down the streets - walking along Heading towards the sun
Everybody dreams of a house on a hill
And a prince who ignites with his touch
Everybody dreams it, but no one believes it
Believes they deserve quite so much
Look around the lost and found inside you
It’s all there at your feet, all that you need
Just go. . .’cause oh don’t you know. . .
If it’s cold enough rain turns to snow
And everything starts to just slow down
Don’t give up now you’re so close
You’ve got to just stay on the road
Once upon a time, was it clear in your mind
The path to adventure and gold
Did you start to lose it in stumbles and bruises
Now just when you need it the most
Take the time to look far behind you
Sometimes home, sheds a light that you need as you roam
Take it and go. . .’cause oh don’t you know. . .
If it’s cold enough rain turns to snow
And everything starts to just slow down
Oh don’t turn back now you’re so close
You’ve got to just stay on the road
Dark and muddy paths each way you turn
There’s no light in the distance
All those voices you’ve heard ring mad in your ears
All you feel is resistance
But then it goes quiet and clear
Cause deep down you know
When it’s cold enough rain turns to snow
And everything starts to just flow
Cause somehow life lightens your load
And gives you back all that you know, you know
Destiny shows you the way
You’ve got to just stay . . .
I'm livin' it out on the road
I've got so far to go
The one that I love is at home
she is a part of me
I stare at the road till my eyes turn red
This book in my lap and a thought in my head of you
And all you have done for me
Something keeps drivin' me on
When I just don't want to go
I carry this feeling inside
That nobody wants to know
So why would you choose to be usin' me
I've never been quite what they want to see from you
But it's all I can do
The road is so demanding, Lord
I can't give more than I have
I know how much I need your love
I can't give more than you've given me
And I stand in some corner back stage
And eat what's not good for me
I sleep in another hotel with the radio on
And I dream of my home where I belong
I don't just travel this far for a song or two
But I'll do it for you
Well I know that the number on e thing
Is spendin' my time with you
This road gives me plenty of time
To hear what you have to say
Sometimes you don't speak a word at all
But here I am waiting to answer your call to me
And I hope you can see
The road, the road is a killer
Backed up by devious men
The road, the road is a killer
But you'll always go back again
Twenty percent of my money
It's twenty percent of my soul
You got to understand baby
I live, I don't play this rock'n'roll
Out on the road, on the road
Twisted, wicked highway
Long and lonesome road
You walk on stage and you're blinded
Losing you way in the night
Sixty thousand people are waiting
so you do a crazy dance in the light
In the morning you're back on the highway
Looking for that pot of gold
You started out so young and strongand eage
Oh well, now you're lonely and you're cold
The road, the road is a killer
It sneaks up at you from behind
It makes you a slave in the long run
It takes your body, soul and your mind
Sometimes I wonder how it all began
Sometimes I see myself given up for dead
I got to get back on the highway
And find my dream
Long long and winding
It will make you breakdown and scream
This is the road that never ends
It doesn't curve it never bends
From where we came there is no return
Nothing left but ashes in the wind
Nothing left but ashes in the wind
We walk the line that divides the land
It wasn't drawn it wasn't planned
From this point there is nowhere else to go
Nothing moves but flashes in the night
Nothing moves but flashes in the night
This was a fairground not that long ago
A Ferris wheel and a proper show
Their journey ended here on this barren top
Nothing left but shadows in the rain
Nothing left but shadows in the rain
And Venus cries in fear and shame
As she beholds what we became
The fire leaps from ocean to the sea
Nothing moves but ghosts along the road
You packed your books last night
You break with the past tonight
I hope you find some beach house on the coast
Out there with plenty of light
'Cause I know the road is very long
But in my head I'll always hold your song
And I'll keep a good thought for you
And I'll keep a good thought for you
You left us 'The Best of Frank'
And on the back you signed your name
'One For My Baby'
Was underlined again
Now I know the road is very long
But in my head I'll always hold your song
And I'll keep a good thought for you
(If you're lonely think of me)
And I'll keep a good thought for you
(If you're lonely think of me)
There's a couple you knew quite well
They moved away last spring
And though he can't find suits
They don't miss much of anything
They're raising a baby now
At least that's one gift that this world allows
And I'll keep a good thought for you
And I'll keep a good thought for you
'Cause I know the road is very long
But in my head I'll always hold your song
And I'll keep a good thought for you
(If you're lonely think of me)
And I'll keep a good thought for you
(If you're lonely think of me)
I'm there to greet you when your life begins
You'll start your journey on your knees and hands
I offer many choices an' places you can go
'Cause you must choose 'cause I'm just the road
I'm paved with mem'ries, glory and regrets
I'm lined with broken dreams and cigarettes
You can take all you can hold but if you stumble b'neath your load
Don't blame me; I'm just the road
I'm a million miles before you, I'm a million miles behind
I'll take you straight and narrow, I'll ramble and I'll wind
So curse my broken brimstone or kiss my bricks of gold
I'm not the reason, I'm just the road
Road to riches, the path of righteousness
Through busy cities, or through a mountain mess
I'll take you through the high way or snake you through the low
But it's your call, I'm just the road
I'm a million miles before you, I'm a million miles behind
I'll take you straight and narrow, I'll ramble and I'll wind
So curse my broken brimstone or kiss my bricks of gold
I'm not the reason, I'm just the road
Instrumental interlude
Your last breath is not the death of me
I'll take you on to where your ticket reads
To that place where I hope shinin' angels greet your soul
If they don't, I'm just the road
'Cause I'm a million miles before you, I'm a million miles behind
I'll take you straight and narrow, I'll ramble and I'll wind
So curse my broken brimstone or kiss my bricks of gold
I'm not the reason, I'm just the road
I'm a million miles before you, I'm a million miles behind
I'll take you straight and narrow, I'll ramble and I'll wind
So curse my broken brimstone or kiss my bricks of gold
I'm not the reason, I'm just the road
So don't you thank me don't you blame me
When you're at that judgment throne
(Verse 1)
I couldn't get lost in this town if I tried. I think
I've seen
everything, they might as well make me king. I love all
the familiar faces I
see, the voices joining with me every time that I sing.
My biggest stage is all
of 13 feet, but that's how I want it to be, that's how
I want it to be. Cause
I'm not the king of Hollywood Boulevard, but I've got
my Michigan Ave, and that
is just fine with me.
(Chorus)
If our chances come and go, if we come up
short we'll know: it was never meant to be. But we'll
still be the kings and
queens.
(Verse 2)
Can't lie and say I haven't dreamed of escape when the
spring is in doubt and the sun hides out of our sights.
But I've got a place
that keeps me sheltered and safe, and a love that I'll
cling to with all of my
might. We've got the beat and we'll keep it steady, so
if you're ready then let
me hear you sing, "Oh! Oh!"
(Repeat Chorus)
(Bridge)
We've taken our
share of shots, and we learned that our hearts could
dance even when our legs
could not. When we look back at yesterday, I think it's
easy to say we've come
a long, long way.
(Repeat Chorus)
(Chorus 2)
If our moment never comes,
if we never see the sun. If nobody knows our names,
well we'll still be the
Well, it's headlights and white lights and Black Tar Rivers
They?re dragging me around this country as it withers
The billboards, signposts, standing in the way
Tell of the state of nations, that we find today
We play and we play and we play
To every day, every day, every day
To every day
And in the front rooms in old towns far from the city
With beaten up guitars and hearts full of pity
The people gather 'round they sing songs from everywhere
They?re torn from the nation but left without a care
And they play and they play and they play
To every day, every day, every day
To every day
And we'll rid the bloody world for a moment in a word
Well, we'll rid the bloody world
'Cos the words that you heard when you were young will always stay
The one's that always stay make the world go away
The words that you heard when you were young will always stay
The one's that always stay make the world go away, and go away
Well, out of warm night and clear sky, European town
Outside the bars singing their hearts out to a crowd
With open boots, violin, banjo and a voice
The exiled busker's are happy with their choice
And they play and they play and they play
To every day, every day, every day
To every day
And we'll rid the bloody world for a moment in a word
Well, we'll rid the bloody world
'Cos the words that you heard when you were young will always stay
The one's that always stay make the world go away
The words that you heard when you were young will always stay
The one's that always stay make the world go away, and go away
Well, we play and we play and we play
I have wandered a million miles
Suffered, many times
Felt the weakness when I was strong
Held sweetness when it was wrong
I've touched high and low but wherever I go
The road, always returns to you
My love, it still belongs to you
Seen you crying tears of rain
I know, I caused you pain
Left you shattered on the ground
But what matters is here and now
'Cause all that I know is wherever I go
The road always returns to you
My love, it still belongs to you
All the bridges that I've build are unbroken
All the memories that live come with knowing
Every thing I've never done
Every thing I've ever done
The road always returns to you
And my love, it still belongs to you
Oh, the road always returns to you
Oh, my love, it still belongs all to you
It still belongs to you
Always returns to you
It still belongs to you
Every day I get up from off the floor
I keep on coming back for more and more
So many times I get it in the face
I keep on running ' til my dying day
Rain on the roadway, thunder in the sky
The light of day disappears from sight
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
These wheels are burning up the miles
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind
I drive awake my eyes are on full beam
The wind is screaming into my slipstream
Something keeps pulling me back from sleep
Whatever it is I want to see
These wheels are burning up the road tonight
The fuel is pumping into my mind
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
These wheels are burning up the miles
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind
I'll be there when it all comes down
I'll be there
I'll be there when it all comes down
I'll be there
When it all comes down
Come on, come on
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
These wheels are burning up the miles
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind
The Road
Fuel pumping gasoline in my mind
From the engine to my body
This wheels on fire
The Road
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind
Sitting alone on my hotel
Looking in the mirror wondering, "well,
After all this time you never thought you'd still be out on the road?"
Like a gypsy I was born to roam
Like a wanderer with no fixed abode
I think about the friends I've left behind on the road
Well, the road's been rocky along the way
It's been a long, hard haul on the motorway
But if it gets too smooth it's time to call it a day
(On the road)
The bed and breakfasts and the greasy spoons
(The road)
The loser bars and the noisy rooms
(The road)
The casualties who did too many lines
(The road)
Wasted talent on women and wine
I think of all the friends I've left behind
Whenever it's time to get back out on the road
Started playing blues in a coffee bar
I took a trip down Charing Cross Road
With my imitation Gretsch guitar
And my head full of songs and my eyes full of stars
I saw a band called the Rolling Stones
I thought, "that's it, I'll get a band,
I'm leaving home, I'm out on the road."
The motorways all over this land
(The road)
Far away places like Wigan and Birmingham
(The road)
Didn't have no name, didn't have any fans
(The road)
Didn't have no money so we slept in the van
All those early gigs we ever played
Sometimes we were lucky if we even got paid
On the road
Pete played on the bass guitar
Liked to get around, mixing with all the stars
But Mrs. Avory's child was all fingers and thumbs
But solid as a rock, setting time on the drums
While Dave the Rave hit the rock 'n' roll riffs
Yours truly strummed away with a slightly limp wrist
On the road
Everyday is when I can't get used to it
Everyday is when I can't get away
Another day, another freeway to face
That's the road
Well, life is a road, it's a motorway
And the road gets rocky along the way
But if it gets too smooth it's time to call it a day
(On the road)
Jimi Hendrix, The Who, the Led Zeppelin and Free
They took the road so it's alright by me
Some are survivors, some are debris
If you play in a band that's the road that you take
Living in it, eating in it, sleeping in it
You wake up in the morning, what do you see?
The road
Life is a road, it's a motorway
Lost a lot of good friends along the way
All the families and homes that I've left behind
To the wives and the lovers and friends who had their time
I say, "you take your road and I'll take mine."
(You take your road and I'll take mine)
You take your road and I'll take mine
(You take your road and I'll take mine)
Life is a road, it's a motorway
And the road gets rocky along the way
But if it gets too smooth it's time to call it a day
(On the road)
Observed all the various phases from
Flower power, heavy metal and acid rock
And still all the critics keep saying
"Are they still around? When they gonna stop?"
It's just the dedicated followers of fashion who like putting down
All the well respected men who came dancing and are still on the road
Sometime I get suicidal
Now everyone is a rival
Different cars, different bars and hotels
Corporations, big business and egos
When it all gets too bad I think back
When we were all each other had
When we started out on the road
And there's gas in my tank and I've still got a way to go
Another hotel, it's time to check out soon
As I look around the room
I think of all the friends I've left behind
Driving up the coast
Eyes on the road
Nowhere in particular to go
Eyes on the road
You ask me what's my philosophy
And I say, well there is one thing I know about being happy
It's not about taming your pain and your fear and your enemy
You gotta let them all lose and surrender to lives' uncertainty
Eyes on the road
The road, the road, the road
Eyes on the road
She quoted one of my saddest songs
The day she broke your sacred heart
She said I don't know witch I prefer to stay or go
But I've decided on the road
You ask me what is my advice
And it's true I've been down this road once or twice
And there are things you can't change and defeats you can't deny
And you waste your time and your life and your love if you try
Eyes on the road, the road, the road, the road
The road, the road, the road, the road
These thoughts of you are all I have to pull me through
This fight my heart is strong and true
There's nothing I won't do to show you
I would sacrifice my dying breath for you
No matter how dark the road
You'll light my way
No matter how far my home
I'll find my way
The bridge is burning and there's no returning
To the desert songs of yesterday
These streets are cracked and all the trees have died
But I will not lose faith I will not stray
No matter how dark the road
You'll light my way
No matter how far my home
The road lies in wait
patient as a snake
diamonds down its back
glitters in its eyes
the road waits
all my bones to break
here I go again
don't even wonder why
The road calls
winding round these walls
the mesas' wail
to the bitter land
the canyon cries
I am dry
soon be dust
blown across these trails
The road turns in
to amber light
the mesa's dream
crystal night
the water drifts
the rock is stained
the desert's washed
in tears not rain
There is a road
men walk down
they learn to hurt
everything they found
there is a road
where women cry
where no wind blows
and no birds fly
There is a road
where nothing runs
ancient eyes
still seek the sun
a flutter of wings
they make no sound
above a road
a man walks down
above a road
a man walks down
The road lies in wait
patient as a snake
diamonds down its back
glitters in its eyes
the road waits
all my bones to break
here I go again
don't even wonder why
Never know how long could be the day
Since you've been gone
A blue face to gray
Never know how long could be the night
Without you, it just don't feel right
So, send in the past(?), to whoever's out there
Won't you lift me up so I can see?
The road, it leads me right through your door
Can't live without you anymore
Show me the road
Never know how many tears could fall
More than all the tea in China
Never know how long I had to wait
To hear your footsteps again at my gate
So, send in the past(?), to whoever's out there
Won't you lift me up so I can see?
The road, it leads me right through your door
Can't live without you anymore
Show me the road
Show me, show me the road
I will sail, a melody(?), I will get down on my knees,
but anything, you want to please, show me, show me the
road
It leads me right through your door
Can't live without you anymore
Chorus
To the east, to the east,
The road beneath my feet.
To the west, to the west,
I haven't got there yet.
To the north, to the north,
Never to be caught.
To the south, to the south,
My time is running out.
Ever since my childhood I've been scared I've been afraid
Of being trapped by circumstance and staying in one place
So I always keep a small bag full of clothes carefully stored
Somewhere secret somewhere safe
And somewhere close to the door
Well I've traveled many countries I've washed my feet in many seas
I've drunk with drifters in Vienna and with punks in old dc
And I've driven across deserts driven by the irony
That only being shackled to the the road could ever I be free
Chorus
To the east, to the east,
The road beneath my feet.
To the west, to the west,
I haven't got there yet.
To the north, to the north,
Never to be caught.
To the south, to the south,
My time is running out.
I've felt old before my time but now I keep the age away
By burning up the miles and yeah by filling up my days
And the nights a thousand nights I've played
And a thousand more to go
Before I take a breath and steal myself
For the next one thousand shows
Chorus
To the east, to the east,
The road beneath my feet.
To the west, to the west,
I haven't got there yet.
To the north, to the north,
Never to be caught.
To the south, to the south,
My time is running out.
Yes so saddle up your horses now and keep your powder dry
Cause the truth is you won't be here long
Yeah soon your going to die
To the heart, to the heart there's no time for you to waste
You wont find your precious answers now by staying in one place
Yeah by giving up the chase
Chorus
To the east, to the east,
The road beneath my feet.
To the west, to the west,
I haven't got there yet.
To the north, to the north,
Never to be caught.
To the south, to the south,
My time is running out.
To the south, to the south,
My time is running out.
To the south, to the south,
My time is running out.
I face the horizon everywhere I go
I face the horizon the horizon is my home
I face the horizon everywhere I go
For the way the sun hits your legs at the truckstop bound Berlin
For the creeks that we bathed, Austrian days and I'm deep in
And time and time and time again, oh so far from the sands
Caught us in the kitchen with the maps in our hands
Many regrets, mountains of "leth" wom out walking for a truth
Miles worth of trials, fistful of denials, it's crookes, but it's led me up to you
And more miles than money, dear, more tears than sweat
Momens of satisfaction are all we ever get
Down and up and down we go and w'ell go that way again
Leaving for another friend, leaving for another end
I love you like a song, could play you all night long
and leave all those rats and snakes alone
Call it some good years, distill and swallow tears, 'cause in the end we're
all just on our own
So everybody's talking about who did what with when
Don't you know it's just the tide, only here to fool you, friend
You're smart enough to know, but dumd enough to say
Oh, what will tomorrow bring?
It's easy living for today
(x 2)
Many regrets, mountains of "leth" wom out walking for a truth
(Ted Harris)
Back home the family's eatin' dinner
There's a fire in the fireside warm and bright
But I won't be there today 'cause I've got a debt to pay
And they don't let black sheep stray from the road.
No they don't let black sheep stray from the road.
My throat is out crying for water
Lord, that wind is blowing cold
That guard is watching me like a hawk up in the tree
And I'm longing to be free from the road
Yes, I'm longing to be free from the road.
Every bone inside my body's aching
And that guard don't care if I live or die
He told me yesterday son don't try to get away
For I'll lay you down to stay by the road
Oh, dawn broke
Heavy rains made it hard to load
Is it time for the road?
I don't know, don't know
Father has gone
So let's go hold your baby's head
And I won't let go
Of your hand, child of mine
(Child of mine)
When it's time to let go
Then we'll be up in heaven's ground
Every dream that I dream
Let you have more than mine
Spirits will climb
Into a time of your design
All that I know
Never will be told, oh, child of mine
After the flight
Dead of the night, oh, we'll be peaceful
Sweet laughter calls
All of a sudden, no time for waiting
So I'm off on the road
That I see might be coming
And those dreams that I hold
All for this child of mine
All that I know
Never will it show, sweet child of mine
All that I know
Never will be told, oh, child of mine
Sweet child of mine
Street signs, so many street signs
pass me by every night and
I know tomorrow
I won't recognize the world
Home bound but I want to be home now
Two more months of empty faces standing there screaming up at me
And I don't know why
I wanna go home
I wanna sleep in my own bed
I want a normal life again
Is this the end? Is this the end?
No matter how hard I try
all I know is the road
All I know is the road
Save me, can anyone save me?
I don't know who I am anymore
This was supposed to be the dream
You don't see the pain in my eyes?
You don't hear the pain in my words?
I'm just stuck here cold and alone with no one beside me
And I wanna go home
I wanna go home
I wanna sleep in my own bed
I want a normal life again
Is this the end? Is this the end?
No matter how hard I try, all I know is the road
All I know is the road
And you wonder why I'm out of my mind?
I wanna go home
I wanna sleep in my own bed
I want a normal life again
Is this the end? Is this the end?
No matter how hard I try, all I know is the road
Is it snow or is it rain
Behind the glass
Got no worry feel no pain
Just tired I guess
In the middle of nowhere
By chance by luck
Sip of freshness breath of air
Look down for fate in your coffee cup
Just around the corner the road
Is calling for me to go
It's the way of life and I don't know
What I'll find on the road
Just around the corner the road
Is calling for me to go
It's the way of life and I don't know
What I'll find behind the door
Faces places drinks of beer
And sleepless nights
Winners losers dreams and fears
Dark spots bright lights
In the middle of somewhere
Next place to stop
Sip of freshness breath of air
Well, I've wandered around
And I've seen many places
That I call my home
I climb the largest mountain
And I scream unto the Lord
"Show me where to go!"
The road is long
And the darkness is dense
But still, I hear the call
To show unto the world
The love of life
That's deep within us all
The destiny lies
Within the path
Of the only one who searches
To find the place
That calls to him
Even though the times are uncertain
So admit you're wrong
Before the times evolve
You are awoken
And show to the world
The love of life
Please, speak to the unspoken
So, journey on, my lost soul
To find your home
The place that fills your heart
To everything that leads you
Theh-eh-ere
Yet throws you from the dark
So, breathe
In the air
That has filled
You full of glory
The air
Which, you'll find
May lead
The road stretched out
A hand ready to shake
The hand reached in
To lead me from this place
My house, it yawned for my room
Was fool of waste
So I finally set my pace
Along the road
The road is pulling me
My home is wishing me away
The street-lamps beckoning:
"Come careless, swiftly
And stray,"
But gone, before I'm gone
I'd like for all my friends
To join up with me
In song
When I go
My friends can nod their heads
And say:
"We're glad she's moved on,"
Farewell, old comforts
So long, restful days
I'll carry nothing
For nothing can I claim
I will try not to
But I'll still forget your name
And I'll find another face
Along the road
And gone, when I'm gone
I'd like for all my friends
To raise up their heads
In song
When I go
My friends can nod their heads
And say:
"We're glad she's moved on,"
the road is pulling me
my home is wishing me away
The sidewalks whispering:
"Come careless, swiftly
And stray,"
So swiftly I strayed
But gone, when I'm gone
I'd like for all my friends
To raise up their heads
In song
When I go
My friends can nod their heads
And say:
"We're glad she's moved on,"
The road is pulling me
Gave up the thing you loved
Just to chase the dream
Try not to wake up
Just go back to sleep
I've said quite enough
You say I broke your heart
How can you break what was not there from the start
Can't find the words to tell you
And I know the road is long
But when this is all over
I will carry on
Don't get to comfortable
Make sure I cannot stay
Don't get to distraught
You don't belong here anyway
Miles away from home
Don't think I will return
I've said this all before
I guess I'll never learn
Can't find the words to tell you
And I know the road is long
But when this is all over
I will carry on
I can't find the words to tell you
And I know the road is long
But when this is all over
I will carry on
There's one thing I'm certain
You will return to me
But if you say it's over
Every day I get up from off the floor
I keep on coming back for more and more
So many times I get it in the face
I keep on running ' til my dying day
Rain on the roadway, thunder in the sky
The light of day disappears from sight
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
These wheels are burning up the miles
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind
I drive awake my eyes are on full beam
The wind is screaming into my slipstream
Something keeps pulling me back from sleep
Whatever it is I want to see
These wheels are burning up the road tonight
The fuel is pumping into my mind
As the road opens up in front of my eyes

I'll be there when it all comes down
I'll be there
I'll be there when it all comes down
I'll be there
When it all comes downCome on, come on
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
These wheels are burning up the miles
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind
The Road
Fuel pumping gasoline in my mind
From the engine to my body
This wheels on fire
The Road
As the road opens up in front of my eyes
The only limitation is in my mind
The Road
I was looking for Heaven instead I found hell
I was walking the back streets where angels wont tread
I was searching for love but only found hate
In the eyes of the baptized who chased me away, who chased me away
Chorus:
And I'll keep on walking
And I'll never stop searching
If you ask where I'm going
I'll say looking for Jesus again
A man hoped for forgiveness, all he got was judged
Persecuted by people who longed to see blood
He was thrown in a jail cell he had no home
By a sheriff with a bible who gambled his soul, gambled his soul
Chorus:
And I'll keep on walking
And I'll never stop searching
If you ask where I'm going
I'll say looking for Jesus again
I'll say looking for Jesus again
I'll say looking for Jesus again
Headlights, white lines, black tar rivers
Dragging me around this country as it whithers

CHORUS
As day turn into night, we say our goodbyes cause time has never been on our side.
I trade away 3 hours trade I've placed on hold.
And you wish that I will bring you more attention than I will.
Let me be the road tonight.
Whose gonna lead you trough safely.
Let me be the road to home.
You're headed walking down towards misery.
As days went down the drain.
Thoughts messed with my brain and I felt that my heart was failing.
And I'm all out of words now and I'm sorry for the hurt.
And you wish that I will bring you more attention than I did.
Let me be the road tonight.
Whose gonna lead you trough safely.
Let me be the road to home.
You're headed walking down towards misery.
I know that there's still much going on.
There´s so many roads to walk on.
Well there´s no need to sweat
Cause there´s not one of them
It's not gonna lead you towards misery.
Let me be the road tonight.
Whose gonna lead you trough safely.
Let me be the road to home.
You're headed walking down towards misery.
Let me be the road tonight.
Whose gonna lead you trough safely.
Let me be the road to home.
If you'd like to get together
Then come right over to me
Ooh, We can do anything
That you like to do
If you'd like to give your love
Then please just feel free
Because I may be gone tomorrow
And not even know your name
Now please don't misunderstand my loneliness
Let's never ever talk of time
Cause friends may fade away
And our hopes will say goodnight
And our friendship would be lost
It would be such a waste of time
So let's just
Let's have a good thing girl
And let's not worry
Let's do everything we want
And let's not cry
When it's over
When I leave
Our thing won't die
If you really understand
Then come right over to me
We can play together for a while
And still be free
Highways and dancehalls
A good song takes you far
You write about the moon
And you dream about the stars
Blues in old motel rooms
Girls in daddy's car
You sing about the nights
And you laugh about the scars
Coffee in the morning, cocaine afternoons
You talk about the weather
And you grin about the rooms
Phone calls long distance
To tell you how you've been
You forget about the losses, you exaggerate the wins
And when you stop to let 'em know
You've got it down
It's just another town along the road
The ladies come to see you
If your name still rings a bell
They give you damn near nothin'
And they'll say they knew you well
So you tell 'em you remember
But they know it's just a game
And along the way their faces
All begin to look the same
And when you stop to let 'em know
You got it down
It's just another town along the road
Well it isn't for the money
And it's only for a while
You stalk about the rooms
And you roll away the miles
Gamblers in the neon, clinging to guitars
You're right about the moon
But you're wrong about the stars
'Cause when you stop to let 'em know
You got it down
We've gone a long way
So why don't we stay here?
The hour is late
And this ain't a bad place
So why don't we stay?
The road's an old friend, we've walked it forever
And wandered away
Away...
Got dirt in my eyes
And ran out of water, conversations ran dry
We got lost in the highway
We're stuck in the north now
So why don't we stay?
The road is my friend, but friends are forever
And roads like to bend
Bend...
We've gone a long way...
No radio stations,
No signal to send
The road is my friend
But this is the end
One more sunday morning and I'm on the road againFound
myself the leader of this one man band
Working next to nothing just to get me by
Smokey bars and shouting helps to pass the time
Woahwo Woahwo
Often stay to shortly nothing is my home
Have no other family and this land I'm left to roam
Everynights a mystery some pointless one night stand
Music is my life to me my guitar in hand
Woahwo Woahwo
Chorus
Find the road you go under
Find the road you go down
Could you ask the bartender
To please bring me another round
Head out of New England right outside DC
Tripping over obstacles not big enough to see
Strumming down the southern coast playing show to show
Someday soon you may hear my voice on a tired radio
Woahwo Woahwo
Chorus
Well I found myself a gambler my pocket had a hole
Ran into the Devil you know we bargained for my soul
Said he knew my destiny he knew where I would go
You'll play your music endlessly and never leave the
road
Woahwo Woahwo
So why do you walk alone
When baby it's so cold outside
It's so cold outside
Decide make up your mind
'Cause time is flying way too fast tonight
Too fast tonight
I was born in the snow
And raised by the wolves
And from time to time
My friend [saving?] my soul
Yet I'd die for your kiss
A short little [bliss?]
So make this my own
Like the last pack of smokes
On the road
On the road
You may be too far away
Or I may be too close
There's not a word that you can ever say
Will make me change my thoughts
But don't you worry baby my thoughts are pure
In love with your way
In love with your way
I was born in the snow
And raised by the wolves
And from time to time
My friend [saving?] my soul
Yet I'd die for your kiss
A short little [bliss?miss?]
So make this my own
Like the last pack of smokes
X2
Last pack of smokes
On the road.
There's a road that takes me back
There the light has seen your face
To the place where I belong
There at last where I will wander
By the lake where time stands still.
There's a road I see before me
Made by the man who tells the tale
There's a road that travels all ways.
There's a road that's here I see
In the midst of all creation
There's a road for you and me.
Yesterday I found you, seated alone
Ow girl, why that sad face now?
Your brown eyes shine as a comet that I saw
My honey, we born one for the other
Your ironic complication covered my body
I'm cold as a stone
Don't leave me alone
You didn't need to have shame
Since we arrived here
Your days will never, never to be same
I came from the other side of the world,
For make you happy, I came to see your smile
I left the soldiers they to bleed
Crazy as a secret one adventurous
God blew our roads
Your ironic complication covered my body
I'm cold as a stone
Don't leave me alone
You didn't need to have shame
Since we arrived here
Your days will never, never to be same
Your ironic complication covered my body
I was cold as a stone
Don't leave me alone
We didn't need to have shame
Since we arrived here
