4th May 1926: General strike of 1.7 million workers begins in the United Kingdom
The origins of the General Strike has its origins in the British coal mining industry, which was facing increasing competition from foreign produces and a strong pound that made exports prohibitively expensive. To address these challenges to their profitability, mine owners proposed wage cuts and changes to working conditions, prompting outrage among coal miners and their trade unions.
On May 1, 1926, negotiations with the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain failed to reach an agreement, leading the owners to lock over a million coal miners out of their mines. The Trades Union Congress (TUC), which represented millions of workers in other industries subsequently called for a nationwide walkout in support of the coal miners’ demands.

The 1926 General Strike
In this talk from Revolution Festival 2019, James Kilby of the Socialist Appeal editorial board discusses the lessons of the British General Strike of 1926.
The 1926 general strike remains one of the greatest moments in the history of the British labour movement. It was the biggest - and most revolutionary - strike that these islands have ever seen.
During the nine days that it lasted, the strike went from strength to strength. ‘Councils of action’ sprang up all over the country, with local working class activists elected to coordinate the movement. These bodies represented the embryo of workers' power. If linked up, they could have formed the basis for a revolutionary workers’ state.
In this talk, James Kilby looks back at this radical episode in British history and asks: if the strike...

As the strike began, essential services such as transportation, utilities, and communication networks were severely disrupted. Trains came to a halt, factories closed their doors, and newspapers ceased publication. The impact of the strike was felt across the country, causing widespread disruption to daily life and economic activity.
In response the Conservative government, led by Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, declared a state of emergency and mobilised troops to maintain order and provide essential services. Volunteer workers were also recruited and trained to keep key industries operational.
The General Strike continued for nine days. On May 12, the TUC called off the strike without achieving a single one of its objectives. While the strike demonstrated the strength of solidarity among workers and their ability to disrupt the economy, it also strengthened the resolve of employers to resist union demands.

In this talk, James Kilby looks back at this radical episode in British history and asks: if the strike was so strong, why was it defeated after only nine days? What was the role of the workers’ leadership in this struggle? And what lessons does the strike hold for us now, in this latest epoch of intense political radicalisation?

And it this shows that me personally and NATO focus a lot further the ratification process both for Sweden and Finland. I will move on to English and I will say Q & A in Scandinavian.

Sweden and Finland joining NATO would be tough for Russia, top U.S. general says
Finland and Sweden joining NATO would put Russia in a difficult military position in the Baltic Sea, top U.S. General Mark Milley said on Saturday (June 4) during a visit to Stockholm ahead of a military exercise.
The two Nordic neighbours, which both have long borders on the Baltic Sea, applied last month to join the military alliance amid security concerns after Russia invaded Ukraine in February, although they face objections from Turkey.

Right-wing bloc has razor-thin lead in Sweden's general election | DW News
In Sweden's election, a right-wing bloc has a razor-thin lead over the left-leaning governing coaltion, as almost 95 percent of votes are counted. Sweden's Social Democratic Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson says the result is too close to call. The leader of the conservatives says the result is unlikey to be known until Wednesday. If the conservative bloc wins, the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats could become part of the government for the first time.

Thank you, Prime Minister Kristersson,

It is always good to come to Stockholm, especially today. We could discuss Sweden's road towards NATO. And there was a period of opportunity for me to meet the representatives of the different political parties in the Swedish parliament. This has been very fruitful to me.
And it this shows that me personally and NATO focus a lot further the ratification process both for Sweden and Finland. I will move on to English and I will say Q & A in Scandinavian.
We meet at a critical time for our security.
President Putin’s war against Ukraine grinds on.
He is not preparing for peace.
He is preparing for more war.
Launching new offensives. Mobilising more forces. And reaching out to other authoritarian regimes for more weapons.
So today we discussed the urgent need to step up and sustain our support for Ukraine.
For Ukraine’s sake, and also for our own security.
I welcome the significant financial, humanitarian and military assistance Sweden is providing to Ukraine.
This includes training, artillery ammunition, and soon, Main Battle Tanks.
Sweden is also playing a leading role through your Presidency in the European Union.
Coordinating more support for Ukraine and more sanctions on Russia.
More than a year since Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine stands defiant.
NATO is united and our Alliance is stronger than ever – and will soon be larger.
Today we discussed finalising Sweden and Finland’s accession to NATO.
This is a top priority.
And we are making progress.
Türkiye has legitimate security concerns.
No NATO Ally has suffered as many terrorist attacks.
I welcome that Sweden has stepped up in the fight against terrorism, including the PKK, by introducing new terrorism legislation, and strengthening counter-terrorism cooperation with Ankara.
I also welcome that Sweden is ensuring that there are no restrictions on arms exports to Türkiye.
Sweden has delivered on its commitments under the Trilateral Memorandum.
And the time has come to finalise the ratification process.
I recently met with President Erdoğan.
And I am glad that he agreed to restart meetings of the Permanent Joint Mechanism.
I have convened another meeting of Türkiye, Finland, and Sweden at NATO Headquarters on Thursday.
I also welcome that the Hungarian Parliament has started discussions on ratification.
And I expect the process to be completed shortly.
Sweden and Finland’s membership will make our Alliance stronger.
With highly capable forces, an advanced defence industry.
And years of experience training and operating together with NATO Allies.
Sweden and Finland’s applications have already strengthened your security.
You are sitting around the NATO table, integrating into our political and military structures.
And exercising more with Allied forces.
NATO has increased its presence in the Nordic region. And many Allies have extended security assurances to Sweden and Finland.
So it is inconceivable that NATO would not act if your security was threatened.
Your invitation to join the Alliance has demonstrated once again that our door remains open.
President Putin wanted less NATO.
He is getting the exact opposite – more NATO.
Dear Ulf,
Thank you again for an excellent meeting, for your personal leadership, and for Sweden’s strong commitment to NATO.
I look forward to welcoming Sweden and Finland as full members of the Alliance in the very near future. Thank you.

Their joining would mean the Baltic Sea's coastline would, bar short strips around Russian cities Kaliningrad and St Petersburg, be encircled by NATO members.
"So from a Russian perspective that will be very problematic for them, militarily speaking, and it would be very advantageous to NATO," said Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
"The Baltic (Sea is) very strategically important, it's one of the great seaways of the world," Milley added.

Andrea Mitchell spoke with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the opening of the NATO Public Forum in Vilnius about the state of the alliance, the on-going conflict in Ukraine, the U.S. decision to supply cluster munitions to Ukraine and Turkey’s agreement to allow Sweden’s entry into NATO. “Sweden will become a full fledged member of this alliance. That's good for Sweden. It's good for Turkey and it's good for all of NATO,” says Stoltenberg.

NATO Secretary General with Prime Minister of Sweden 🇸🇪 Ulf Kristersson, 11 MAR 2024

Joint press statements by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with the Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, 11 March 2024.
🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
Prime Minister Kristersson, dear Ulf. It is an honour to welcome you to today to the NATO Headquarters because this is truly an historic day.
In a few moments, we will raise the Swedish flag here at the NATO Headquarters, and all over the Alliance, and welcome your country as the thirty-second member of NATO.
Sweden has taken its rightful place at NATO’s table under the shield of Article 5 protection - the ultimate guarantee of our freedom and security. All for one and one for all.
Joining NATO is good for Sweden, good for stability in the North and good for the security of our whole Alliance.
Sweden has long been a partner. Now you are an Ally with all the benefits and responsibilities that this brings.
Sweden has cutting-edge capabilities, first-class armed forces and defence industry, and spends more than 2 percent of GDP on defence.
As we speak, Swedish troops are taking part in Steadfast Defender - NATO’s biggest military exercise since the Cold War. A demonstration of our unity and our resolve.
In response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, NATO has substantially increased our presence across the Alliance and Sweden’s membership enhances this even further.
When President Putin launched his full-scale invasion two years ago, he wanted less NATO and more control over his neighbours. He wanted to destroy Ukraine as a sovereign state. But he failed.
NATO is bigger and stronger. Ukraine is closer to NATO membership than ever before and as the brave Ukrainians continue to fight for their freedom, we stand by their side.
Allies continue to announce billions of dollars in new aid including Sweden’s largest package yet – covering ammunition, air defences, and combat boats.
Our support to Ukraine saves lives and it must continue.
President Putin started this war and he could end it today but Ukraine does not have this option. Surrender is not peace.
We must continue to strengthen Ukraine to show President Putin that he will not get what he wants on the battlefield but must sit down and negotiate a solution where Ukraine is recognised and prevails as a sovereign, independent nation.
So Prime Minister Kristersson, thank you for your personal leadership.
Broad support across the political spectrum in Sweden has made this day possible.
After more than 200 years of neutrality, you are joining the strongest and most successful military alliance in history.
So welcome to NATO, it’s great to have you here.
