Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity, intended to promote good or improve human quality of life. It is considered as serving the society through own interest, personal skills or learning, which in return produces a feeling of self-worth and respect, instead of money. Volunteering is also famous for the skill development, to socialize and to have fun. It is also intended to make contacts for possible employment or for a variety of other reasons.
Volunteering takes many forms, and can be performed by anyone with own set of skills. Many volunteers are specifically trained in the areas they work in, such as medicine, education, or emergency rescue. Other volunteers serve on an as-needed basis, such as in response to a natural disaster or for a beach-cleanup.
The verb Volunteer was first recorded in 1755, from the noun, in C.1600, "one who offers himself for military service," from M.Fr. Voluntaire. The word in the Non-military sense was first recorded during 1630s. The word Volunteering has a more recent usage, still predominantly military, coinciding with the word Community service.

Plot
In 1920, rural Ireland is the vicious battlefield of republican rebels against the British security forces and Irish Unionist population who oppose them, a recipe for mutual cruelty. Medical graduate Damien O'Donovan always gave priority to his socialist ideals and simply helping people in need. Just when he's leaving Ireland to work in a highly reputed London hospital, witnessing gross abuse of commoners changes his mind. he returns and joins the local IRA brigade, commanded by his brother Teddy, and adopts the merciless logic of civil war, while Teddy mellows by experiencing first-hand endless suffering. When IRA leaders negotiate an autonomous Free State under the British crown, Teddy defends the pragmatic best possible deal at this stage. Damien however joins the large seceding faction which holds nothing less then a socialist republic will do. The result is another civil war, bloodily opposing former Irish comrades in arms, even the brothers.

Teddy: [looking around Hamilton's study] Such a beautiful room, it's hard to imagine a man's scream from here. Ever seen fingernails ripped out with a rusty pliers, Sir John, hmm? All your learning, and you still don't understand.::Sir John Hamilton: Oh, I understand perfectly, Mr. O'Donovan. God preserve Ireland if ever your kind take control.::Damien: [trains his gun on Hamilton] Well, you'd better start getting used to the idea.
Damien: Micheail was killed because he wouldn't say his name in English. That what you call a martyr, is it, Teddy?
Damien: I tried not to get into this war, and did, now I try to get out, and can't.
Damien: The Treaty does not express the will of the people, but the fear of the people.
Damien: And once again, with honourable exception, the Catholic Church sides with the rich.
Damien: Strange creatures we are, even to ourselves.
Teddy: It's not too late, Damien.::Damien: For me or for you?
Damien: [loading revolver] I studied anatomy for five years, Dan. And now i'm going to shoot this man in the head. I've known Chris Reilly since he was a child. I hope this Ireland we're fighting for is worth it.
Chris: Promise me, Damien. Promise me you won't bury me next to him?::[points to Sir John]::Damien: The chapel. Do you remember, on the way up? Do you remember?::Chris: Yeah.::Damien: In there.::Chris: Tell Teddy I'm sorry. I'm scared, Damien.::Damien: [sighs] Have you said your prayers?::Chris: Yeah.::Damien: God protect you.
Damien: [to Teddy] You have wrapped yourself in the fucking Union Jack! The butcher's apron, boy!
Plot
Anne runs for re-election to the town council, shepherded by Matthieu, her fellow candidate and campaign manager. Her husband, Gérard, a businessman and philanderer, hates the campaign and feels vindication when a nasty leaflet circulates about their family history. His son, François, just back from the U.S., is in love with his step-sister Michèle, and she with him, although something is amiss besides their being cousins. Watching it all is their elderly Aunt Line, who has her own haunting memories. A death in World War II and a death on election night collapse time in the perpetual present and bring unexpected expiation. There's a lot to celebrate.

Anne Charpin-Vasseur: You look upset.::Matthieu Lartigue: I imagine I do. Something awkward has cropped up. We should talk in private.
Matthieu Lartigue: [Referring to a nasty political leaflet directed at Anne Charpin-Vasseur and her family] Well, your family's under attack.
Gérard Vasseur: Why should they go to Pyla?::Anne Charpin-Vasseur: We can't talk about it all night! They took her car. Can you drop me off tomorrow?::Gérard Vasseur: At what time?::Anne Charpin-Vasseur: Before ten, if possible.::Gérard Vasseur: [Referring to Matthieu] Can't your "guardian angel" do it?::Anne Charpin-Vasseur: He's kind, but he's not my driver, after all.::Gérard Vasseur: No, he's not. I am!::Anne Charpin-Vasseur: [Smiling coyly] You're my husband.
Aunt Line: [Observing that Marthe is washing the dishes by hand] Why don't you use the dishwasher, Marthe?::Marthe: I work faster than it does. I never asked for it.::Aunt Line: Try to move with the times.::Marthe: Progress isn't all good.
François Vasseur: [Referring to the fresh oysters he's eating at the cafe in Pyla] I'm really enjoying this. They're so bad in America. They rinse them in fresh water and it kills the taste.
Michèle Charpin-Vasseur: A week living like hypocrites.::Aunt Line: Dear, we've been living like hypocrites for years.::François Vasseur: Let's be philosophical. People have lived like hypocrites since the dawn of time. That's what you call "civilisation."
Aunt Line: Are you all right? [repeating the line, louder] Are you all right? Do you feel like crying?::Michèle Charpin-Vasseur: I can't.::Aunt Line: That's good. You must control yourself and help me. Listen to me. You didn't do anything, you hear? You didn't do anything! We're going to carry Gérard to his room. Can you manage that?::Michèle Charpin-Vasseur: I don't know...::Aunt Line: Please, you must help me! I can't carry him alone. Do you trust me?::Michèle Charpin-Vasseur: Of course, Aunt Line.::Aunt Line: Help me then. I'll explain later.
