Here’s news that could bode well for Universal next year, as statistics show that the trailer for the studio’s Fifty Shades of Grey was the most-watched teaser reel of 2014, putting it ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Here’s the full list of the Top 10 most viewed trailers:

1. Fifty Shades of Grey
2. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
3. The Avengers: Age of Ultron
4. Jurassic World
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
6. Furious 7
7. Minions
8. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
9. Dumb and Dumber To
10. Interstellar

Why’s everyone so heated up about Fifty Shades of Grey? Check out the reason below:

THR reports that the trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey tallied 93 million YouTube views since its release on July 24, making it the most-watched trailer on the site in 2014. Having several additional months on Star Wars: The Force Awakens had to help, for even though J.J. Abrams’ teaser didn’t arrive until Nov. 28, it still amassed 81 million YouTube views. Here’s why. Millennium Falcon time!

Still gives me chills. It goes without saying that if the trailer for The Force Awakens came out in July as opposed to November, it easily would have surpassed Fifty Shades of Grey as the year’s most-watched clip. And it probably goes without saying that the next chapter in the Star Wars saga is the most anticipated movie of 2015. But the rest of the top five trailers according to YouTube round out the remaining movies audiences are most excited about, starting with Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron:

THR claims that the fourth and fifth spots on the chart belonged to Jurassic World

… and, perhaps surprisingly, the trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:

The question might be, "Will this translate into big box office tallies in 2015?" For Star Wars and Avengers, this goes without saying. For Fifty Shades of Grey, the prediction is a bit murkier. Watching the steamy clip in the comfort of your own home is one thing. Paying to see it in theaters is another. But director Sam Taylor-Johnson has to feel better about her film's chances in light of this data. We’ll see what happens on February 13.
