Margaret is a 2011 drama film written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. The film stars Anna Paquin, Matt Damon, Mark Ruffalo, Kieran Culkin, Olivia Thirlby, and Rosemarie DeWitt. Margaret originally was scheduled for release in 2007 by Fox Searchlight Pictures, but was repeatedly delayed while Lonergan struggled to create a final cut he was satisfied with, resulting in multiple lawsuits.
While the studio insisted the film's running time could not exceed 150 minutes, Lonergan's preferred version was closer to three hours. Eventually, Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker contributed to editing a 150-minute cut which Lonergan approved, and Fox Searchlight Pictures released the film limitedly in the United States on September 30, 2011.
17-year-old Manhattan student Lisa Cohen, while shopping on the Upper West Side, distracts a bus driver, Jason Berstone, leading to a fatal accident in which a pedestrian is run over and dies in Lisa's arms. In collaboration with the victim's best friend and cousin, Lisa ultimately becomes involved in a lawsuit against the driver. Meanwhile, Lisa flirts with her maths teacher, Aaron Caije, and argues about politics and terrorism with her classmates.

Sweet Ma- Ma- Ma- Ma- Margaret!
Thank you Edinburgh, good night, we shall de-fi-nite-ly return
Margaret
You're such a magical child
I found that
The first time you smiled
And the more i get to know you
The more I am amazed
To find in someone
Such tender loving ways
And just like everybody sings
When the sunshine makes them high
I sing this gentle love song
From a flower to a butterfly
From a flower
Margaret came to me was all he said
before she know my name she was in my bed
she was only sweet sixteen
20,000 days younger than me
Margaret feels the world beneath her feel
shaking like a leaf falls from the tree
she don't care he's ten years older than me
as long as they're together happily
"marry me" she said I don't reply
"daddy said you better, or you'll die"
she wants a house and fifteen kids I guess
and I can't find a state we're legal in
Margaret came to me was all he said
Before she knew my name she was in my bed
She was only sweet sixteen
Twenty thousand days younger than me
Marry me she said, I don't reply
Daddy said, "You'd better, or you'll die"
She wants a house and fifteen kids I guess
She does my love
And I can't find a state we're legal in
Margaret
Margaret
Margaret
Margaret
Margaret feels the world beneath her feet
Shakin' like a leaf falls from the tree
She don't care he's ten years older than me
As long as they're together happily
She says, "Stay away"
Marry me she said, I don't reply
Daddy said, "You'd better, or you'll die"
She wants a house and fifteen kids I guess
She does my love
And I can't find a state we're legal in
Margaret
Margaret
Margaret
Margaret
(She's gonna sing, and you're gonna listen!
One, two, one two three four...)
Margaret, back in junior high
Margaret, all yellow curled
She was the most popular girl
Margaret, she was beautiful
Margaret developed first
We all thought she had all the luck in the word
She never noticed me, what could I give her
I knew someday I would have to forgive her
Ooo Margaret, Dear Margaret
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo (etc)
Such a lucky girl
Doo, doo, doo (etc)
How could I, ever forget, Margaret
Meanwhile, ten years later
Margaret moved to West Hollywood
We all thought she could make it if anyone could
Margaret, she missed the reunion
Margaret, we never heard
What became of St Mary's glamorous girl?
Until the day at the video center
A man held a tape with a girl on the cover
In bad lingerie on a Cadillac fender
Ooh Margaret, Dear Margaret
Doo, doo, doo (etc)
Such a lucky girl
Doo, doo, doo (etc)
Our St Mary's girl
Doo, doo, doo (etc)
How could I ever forget,
Hearing her voice
was like hearing the future
So I covered my ears
'cause I didn't want to hear her
And just the same her words
come spilling out of my mouth
Looking at her is like
looking in the mirror
So I closed my eyes
'cause I didn't want to see her
And just the same
my body moves with hers
You see I wanted to go down where the water would wash it away
Where I could make my own tracks
You are your mother's daughter they say and I say
Tell me something I don't know
See she'd done some things
I didn't want to repeat
So I thought if I closed her out
I'd come away clean
So I told her my worries
that I'd marry twice
And never learn to love right
And she said what you have learned from me is your self respect
What I hope you've learned is when to leave a burning building
You see I wanted to go down where the water would wash it away
Where I could make my own tracks
You are your mother's daughter they say and I say
Tell me something I don't know
So the card said
'I have news for you
You aren't me and I'm not you
Just 'cause we lose things
and we tell the truth
It doesn't mean anything
'Cause above all
you have always been you'
Now I only hope
that one day I can fill her shoes
And I'll be who I'll be
by using her tools
She knew what would hurt her so she chose to move on
Life is too short, she said, to love Mr. Wrong
He's wrong
She wanted to go down where the water would wash it away
Where she could make
her own tracks
You are your mother's daughter they say and I say
