Europa (mythology)

In Greek mythology Europa (/jʊˈroʊpə, jə-/; Greek: Εὐρώπη Eurṓpē) was the mother of King Minos of Crete, a woman with Phoenician origin of high lineage, and for whom the continent Europe was named. The story of her abduction by Zeus in the form of a white bull was a Cretan story; as Kerényi points out "most of the love-stories concerning Zeus originated from more ancient tales describing his marriages with goddesses. This can especially be said of the story of Europa".

Europa's earliest literary reference is in the Iliad, which is commonly dated to the 8th century B.C. Another early reference to her is in a fragment of the Hesiodic Catalogue of Women, discovered at Oxyrhynchus. The earliest vase-painting securely identifiable as Europa, dates from mid-7th century B.C.

Etymology

The etymology of her Greek name (εὐρύς eurys "wide" or "broad" and ὤψ ops "eye(s)" or "face") suggests that Europa as a divine spirit represented the wide-faced cow Hathor, at least on some symbolic level. Metaphorically, at a later date her name could be construed as the intelligent or open-minded, analogous to glaukopis (γλαυκῶπις) attributed to Athena. However, Ernest Klein and Giovanni Semerano suggest a possible Semitic origin in Akkadian erebu "to go down, set" (in reference to the sun) which would parallel occident.

Europe 2009

Europe 2009 is a live album and video release by the Dave Matthews Band from several 2009 concerts in Italy and London. The concert on the three CDs was held in Piazza Napoleone in Lucca, Italy, on July 5, 2009. The concert featured on the DVD was at Brixton Academy in London, on June 26, 2009. Tim Reynolds, who resumed touring with the band in 2008, appears on both the audio discs and the DVD.

Europe '72 (Live), released in 1997, is a compilation album of live performances by British jazz-rock group If. It features material from their first four LPs that was recorded live on tour and before studio audiences. The extensive liner notes, giving an exhaustive background on the band, were written by UK music critic Chris Welch.

MTV Plus

MTV Plus was a digital entertainment television channel available in Greece and an Italian version also aired until it was replaced with MTV Music on March 1, 2011.

MTV Plus in Greece

The channel was launched in Greece on October 18, 2009. The launch party was held in "Vogue" Club in Thessaloniki 17 December 2009, with a guest appearance from British dance band Freemasons, as well as Greek band as C Real, Stavento and other Greek acts. MTV+ is available in Thessaloniki, in northern Greece. Its programming is similar to its sister channel MTV Greece. MTV+ utilizes MTV's current global branding. The Greek version has closed on December 12, 2011, replaced by Nickelodeon Plus.

MTV+ in Italy

The channel launched Free-to-air in Italian DTT in May 2010 and on Sky Italia on October 18, 2010. The Italian version has closed on March 1, 2011, replaced by MTV Music.

MTV (Canada)

MTV is a Canadian English language Category A cable and satellite specialty channel that is owned by Bell Media with the name and branding used under a licensing agreement with the Viacom Media Networks division of Viacom. The channel is devoted to talk, lifestyle and documentary programming, and also airs some scripted series.

The channel launched as talktv in 2000, but was not as widely available prior to its relaunch in March 2006. Unlike MTV channels in the U.S. and elsewhere, the channel is restricted in its ability to carry music videos and other music programming due to conditions in the channel's licence issued by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), thus it never used the tagline "Music Television" as did its international counterparts prior to 2010. MuchMusic, now a sister channel of the Canadian MTV channel, had been launched in 1984 as the Canadian channel dedicated to mainstream music.

History

MTV in Canada before 2006

CHUM Limited launched Canadian music channel MuchMusic in 1984, inspired by the success of MTV in the United States. CRTC genre exclusivity restrictions prevented MTV from either bringing its U.S. channel directly into Canada or launching a homegrown competitor. As a result, MTV was initially content to sell Canadian rights to its programming for rebroadcast on MuchMusic. However, relations between the two channels were strained in the mid-1990s when CHUM (in partnership with Cablevision's Rainbow Media) launched an American version of MuchMusic (later fully sold to Rainbow; now the Madison Square Garden, Inc.-owned Fuse) in direct competition with MTV.

MTV Netherlands

MTV Netherlands is a television channel broadcasting to the Dutch speaking markets in the Netherlands and Flanders. It started in September 2000. Before the start of country-specific channels, the Netherlands viewed the pan-European MTV - MTV Europe.

The channel is broadcast from the MTV Networks Benelux headquarters in Amsterdam.

History

MTV began its services in Europe on August 1, 1987. Under the name of MTV Europe. At the end of the 90s MTV Europe began to regionalize its MTV feeds. In September 2000 the localized MTV Netherlands started.

On May 14, 2009 MTV launched its first HD channel in the Netherlands. MTVN HD started on the CAIW cable network and on CanalDigitaal satellite TV. In 2010 followed by the larger cable network UPC Netherlands (May 3). The N stood for Nickelodeon. The channel combined the programs of MTV and Nickelodeon.

On July 1, 2011 MTVN HD changed into MTV Live HD, dropping the programs of Nickelodeon because in many European countries a separate HD-simulcast of Nickelodeon began. In September of that same year Ziggo added MTV Live HD to its line-up.

Music (Erick Sermon and Marvin Gaye song)

"Music" is a 2001 hit single by Erick Sermon featuring archived vocals from Marvin Gaye.

The song was thought of by Sermon after buying a copy of Gaye's Midnight Love and the Sexual Healing Sessions album, which overlook some of the original album's earlier mixes. After listening to an outtake of Gaye's 1982 album track, "Turn On Some Music" (titled "I've Got My Music" in its initial version), Sermon decided to mix the vocals (done in a cappella) and add it into his own song. The result was similar to Natalie Cole's interpolation of her father, jazz great Nat "King" Cole's hit, "Unforgettable" revisioned as a duet. The hip hop and soul duet featuring the two veteran performers was released as the leading song of the soundtrack to the Martin Lawrence & Danny DeVito comedy, "What's the Worst That Could Happen?" The song became a runaway success rising to #2 on Billboard's R&B chart and was #1 on the rap charts. It also registered at #21 pop giving Sermon his highest-charted single on the pop charts as a solo artist and giving Gaye his first posthumous hit in 10 years following 1991's R&B-charted single, "My Last Chance" also bringing Gaye his 41st top 40 pop hit. There is also a version that's played on Adult R&B stations that removes Erick Sermon's rap verses. The song was featured in the 2011 Matthew McConaughey film The Lincoln Lawyer.
