The militants seized Wanat-Waygal following two days of intense fighting with government forces. The terrorists have also taken over 16 security check points surrounding the district. Local officials say Afghan forces had to retreat from the area after receiving no reinforcement. There are reports of casualties among security forces but the exact figure is still unknown. The district has long been a hotbed of fighting, and changed hands several times in the past couple of years. The Taliban have stepped up their attacks in the country’s east, north eastern and northern parts since the beginning of their so-called spring offensive in late April.

STORYLINE:
Six U.S. troops were killed when insurgents ambushed their foot patrol in the high mountains of eastern Afghanistan, officials said on Saturday.
The attack, the most lethal against US forces this year, made 2007 the deadliest for U.S. troops in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion.
Three Afghan national army soldiers were also killed.
The troops were returning from a meeting with village elders late on Friday afternoon in Nuristan province when militants attacked them with rocket propelled grenades and gunfire, Lt. Col. David Accetta told The Associated Press.
"Eight ISAF and 11 ANA (Afghan National Army) soldiers were also wounded," General Carlos Branco, a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force said at a news conference in Kabul.
Violence in Afghanistan this year has been the deadliest since the Taliban's ouster.
More than 5,800 people, mostly militants, have died so far this year in insurgency-related violence, according to an Associated Press count based on figures from Afghan and Western officials.
Fighter aircraft and troops using artillery or mortars at nearby outposts fired on the militants' positions, Accetta said.
It wasn't immediately clear how many militants were involved in the ambush, he said.
Mohammad Daoud Nadim, Nuristan deputy police chief, said the ambush happened in the remote province's Waygal district, about 60 kilometres (40 miles) from the border with Pakistan, which militants are known to use as a sanctuary.
Nadim said he had no information on any casualties among the militants.
Arabs and other foreign fighters from Chechnya and Uzbekistan are known to operate in the Nuristan region, but the region's governor, Tamin Nuristani, blamed the attack on Taliban militants.
Nuristani said the combined troops searched two houses after the meeting with village elders and were ambushed after while walking to their base afterward.
Nuristan province has seen heavy fighting in recent months.

STORYLINE
The US military said airstrikes by its attack helicopters hit two vehicles carrying insurgents on Friday in eastern Afghanistan.
The province's governor said 22 civilians, including a woman and a child, were killed.
First Lieutenant Nathan Perry, a spokesman for the US-led coalition, said the airstrikes in Nuristan province hit militants who had earlier attacked a US military base with mortars.
He said he had no report of noncombatant injuries.
The helicopters identified the militants' firing positions, tracked them down and destroyed the vehicles that they were travelling in, he said.
Nuristan's Governor Tamim Nuristani said, however, that 22 civilians were killed in the airstrike in the Waygal district of Nuristan province.
Two civilian vehicles were hit by airstrikes on Friday afternoon, he said over the phone.
His account was confirmed by one of those injured in the airstrike.
"We were driving in two vehicles," Abdul Fahim told AP Television from a hospital bed.
"We were driving in vehicles when the helicopters came and bombed us, most of the people in the vehicles were killed and some were wounded," he said.
Among those killed were a woman and a child.
All 22 dead bodies were brought to a provincial hospital, Nuristani said.
Seven people were also wounded, he said. However, a relative of one of the victims said three people were injured.
"There were not any Taliban or any enemy when they (the Americans) bombarded. Around 25 people were driving in these vehicles only three were wounded and the rest were dead," Sayed Manan told AP Television.
The military base is some nine kilometres (six miles) away from the place where the airstrike happened, Nuristani said.
A provincial police official, said over a dozen people were killed or wounded in the strike, which he described as hitting two civilian vehicles in a
remote mountainous area.
It was impossible to independently verify any of the claims because of the remoteness of the area.
Overall, more than eight thousand people were killed in insurgency-related attacks in Afghanistan last year - the most since the 2001 US-led invasion.
Violence has claimed more than 2,100 lives so far this year.
