The musical tribute was in celebration of the Library of Congress Gershin Prize for Popular Song award being presented to Sir Paul by President Obama. Among the special tributes by performers including Elvis Costello, Dave Grohl, Jack White, Faith Hill and The Jonas Brothers, was a special performance by Stevie Wonder. Stevie first performed his own version of "We Can Work It Out" and then later was joined by Paul onstage to sing their 1980s hit "Ebony and Ivory." The song was originally released in 1982 and spent seven weeks at number one on the Billboard charts according to Wikipedia. Almost 30 years later, the song about racial harmony had even more significance as McCartney and Wonder performed it at the White House before the first African-American President in the United States. McCartney commented in an interview with the AP: "One of the highs was singing 'Ebony and Ivory' with Stevie because we'd never done it live together, so that was great. To sing it live together for the very first time with the first black president there, it suddenly gave a great significance to the song....To sing it with Stevie in front of President Obama was very emotional." When accepting the award, McCartney said: "This is such a fantastic evening for me. I mean, getting this prize would just be good enough, but getting it from this president..." which resulted in cheers and applause from the audience. Paul McCartney's girlfriend, Nancy, accompanied him to the show and McCartney's children, Stella, Mary and James were sitting in the second row behind their father. As they gathered to present the annual award for extraordinary contributions to American music and culture, in his remarks, the President took a moment to address the challenges Americans face and the value of music in tough times: We've gone through a difficult year and a half, and right now our thoughts and our prayers are with friends in another part of the country that is so rich in musical heritage -- the people of the Gulf Coast who are dealing with something that we simply had not seen before. And it's heartbreaking. And we reaffirm, I think together, our commitment to see to it that their lives and their communities are made whole again. But part of what gets us through tough times is music, the arts, the ability to capture that essential kernel of ourselves, that part of us that sings even when times are hard. And it's fitting that the Library has chosen to present this year's Gershwin Prize for Popular Song to a man whose father played Gershwin compositions for him on the piano; a man who grew up to become the most successful songwriter in history --- Sir Paul McCartney. In the East Room of the White House. June 2, 2010.

What I have to say about Macca, in short, is that the "cute" Beatle in real life is not exactly "cute." Sir Paul {Oh, that 'Sir' bit makes me gag!} has become a bit of a monster: "The Great Walking Ego." He was arrogant, turning up late for the meeting with Brian Epstein that would seal their future, and soon considered himself a cut above the others. Macca really broke up The Beatles. He was the first one to sue. He hated that the other three wanted Allen Klein to be their manager - he wanted the Eastman family to represent them, Linda's family - so he simply sued for dissolution of "Beatles Inc." Macca drove Wings to a very bitchy end. He mis-treated his bandmates, insisting on having his own way over every note, every single stage movement, even every stage costume. He was notorious for not paying the band on time, or in amounts of $$ promised, or not paying at all. (He refused to sign contracts establishing exact remuneration band members would be paid.) He played favourites with pay packages, creating an atmosphere of sycophancy: Be nice to Himself, maybe you'll get paid more than the others. He has recorded so many desultory, awful solo albums that went nowhere, unlike his fellow Beatles who usually at least got their records on the charts. (Even Ringo) He has hidden behind a carefully cultivated PR image of blokeish normality, but ultimately his phalanx of PR hacks fail to disguise a man who has lost touch with everyday reality, buying land, houses, cars and horses as we shop for groceries. A music-business manager is quoted in "Fab": rock stars are never like the rest of us - they only pretend to be. It's clearly evident that Macca has one MASSIVE EGO, and he's a Control Freak! He is, however, a talented actor and uses his personal charm to seduce "friends" and fans. I think his seductive charm - his charisma - was the quality of his that first pulled him into John Lennon's orbit. Didn't Lennon sour on him after many years, saying that Paul was a person he loved-and-hated? There you have it: Macca is a "difficult" personality. Yes, he's hugely talented, ambitious and charismatic. But everywhere he goes he tends to leave a few enemies behind. It's so easy for fans to raise a talent like Macca to god-like status. But he's just a human being. Not much different from you, or me! His knighthood is no big deal - everybody and his brother in the UK gets one for doing anything impressive. His vast wealth allows him to insulate himself from the real world, our world where people have to give a bit to take a bit, and get along with one another. No, he Gets Everything He Wants! Not so Cute!

noodls 2015-04-19Sir James Paul McCartney, MBE, Hon RAM, FRCM (born 18 June 1942) is an English musician, singer-songwriter and composer. Formerly of the Beatles (1960–1970) and Wings (1971–1981), he has been described by Guinness World Records as "The Most Successful Composer and Recording Artist of All Time", with 60 gold discs and sales of over 100 million albums and 100 million singles. With John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, he gained worldwide fame as a member of the Beatles, and with Lennon formed one of the most celebrated songwriting partnerships of the 20th century. After leaving the Beatles, he began a solo career and later formed the band Wings with his first wife, Linda Eastman, and singer-songwriter Denny Laine.
According to the BBC, his Beatles song "Yesterday" has been covered by over 2,200 artists—more than any other song. Wings' 1977 release, "Mull of Kintyre", became one of the best-selling singles ever in the UK, and he is "the most successful songwriter" in UK chart history, according to Guinness. As a songwriter or co-writer, he is included on thirty-one number one titles on the Billboard Hot 100, and as of 2012 he has sold over 15.5 million RIAA certified units in the United States.

"The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.[1]

The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [2][dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.
It was also used as a term for a drug dealer in the 1950s and 1960s and can be seen in such media as Curtis Mayfield's "No Thing On Me", William Burroughs's novel Naked Lunch, and in the Velvet Underground song "I'm Waiting for the Man", in which Lou Reed sings about going to Uptown Manhattan, specifically Lexington Avenue and 125th Street, to buy heroin.
The use of this term was expanded to counterculture groups and their battles against authority, such as the Yippies, which, according to a May 19, 1969 article in U.S. News and World Report, had the "avowed aim ... to destroy 'The Man', their term for the present system of government". The term eventually found its way into humorous usage, such as in a December 1979 motorcycle ad from the magazine Easyriders which featured the tagline, "California residents: Add 6% sales tax for The Man."
In present day, the phrase has been popularized in commercials and cinema, featuring particularly prominently as a recurring motif in the 2003 film School of Rock.[3][4][5][6]
The term has also been used as an approbation or form of praise. This may refer to the recipient's status as the leader or authority within a particular context, or it might be assumed to be a shortened form of a phrase like "He is the man (who is in charge)." One example of this usage dates to 1879 when Otto von Bismarck commented, referring to Benjamin Disraeli's pre-eminent position at the Congress of Berlin, "The old Jew, he is the man."[7][dubious – discuss]
In more modern usage, it can be a superlative compliment ("you da man!") indicating that the subject is currently standing out amongst his peers even though they have no special designation or rank, such as a basketball player who is performing better than the other players on the court. It can also be used as a genuine compliment with an implied, slightly exaggerated or sarcastic tone, usually indicating that the person has indeed impressed the speaker but by doing something relatively trivial.
