Tish (Hasidic celebration)
A tish (Yiddish: טיש, pl. טישין, tishen, literally, "table"), also spelled tisch, is a gathering of Hasidim around their Rebbe. It may consist of speeches on Torah subjects, singing of melodies known as niggunim (singular niggun) and zemirot ("hymns"), with refreshments being served. Hasidim see it as a moment of great holiness. They are public events that are open to non-Hasidim as well.
Within Hasidic Judaism, a tish refers to any joyous public celebration or gathering or meal by Hasidim at a "table" of their Rebbe. Such a gathering is often referred to in Hebrew as Arichat HaShulchan (עריכת השולחן), the "setting of the table". The term "Shabbos tish" is also sometimes used in Yiddish regarding the Shabbat meal of any Jewish family.
During a tish, the Rebbe sits at the head of the table and the Hasidim gather around the table. In large Hasidic movements, only the Rebbe and his immediate family, plus a few close disciples, partake of the actual meal, but small pieces of bread, fish, meat, poultry, farfel, beans, kugel, or fruit, as well as small cups of kosher wine or other beverages, are distributed to all present as shirayim (שיריים). In such large courts, there are often bleachers, known as parentches (פארענטשעס) in Yiddish, for observers of the tish to stand on. In smaller courts there is usually more food available for observers to partake. Often, in both large and small tishen, the Rebbe will personally distribute shirayim food to individuals. Hasidim believe that the Rebbe will have a personal blessing for each person who partakes of the food he gives them.

Children playing on derelict streets, workers drinking pints after mass layoffs and disaffected youths hanging around wastelands… Tish Murtha's images of working-class life in North East England can be found in the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Britain. She started taking pictures of people in her own community in the West end of Newcastle in the 1970's. Although these days she is feted today as one of the country’s most important social documentary photographers, in her lifetime Murtha struggled to make a living and died penniless a decade ago at the age of 56. Her daughter has now made a film about her mother's life and work with director Paul Sng (Poly Styrene: I Am a cliché). She has been talking to Sharuna Sagar about this labour of love.

The film is a journey of exploration for Ella Murtha as both daughter and custodian of the Tish Murtha archive, a chance to elevate and preserve a legacy that has been lost and to tell the story of an artist and woman outside of the ‘mother’ that existed for her – or the version of Tish claimed within dominant narratives of the 70s and 80s photography – from the people who knew Tish and the images she left behind.

Tish Murtha's Photography made a huge impression on me when I first saw it. Looking at her work, and reading up about her background and process, it was clear she was someone who cared deeply about her subjects, and took the responsibility of telling their stories well very seriously. I think we can all learn a great deal about the art of documentary photography by spending time with her work.

Letitia "Tish" Carberry, an eccentric New England spinster, lives with her nephew, Charlie Sands, and her two cronies, Aggie Pilkington and Lizzie Wilkins, live in a near-by boarding house. Once there, she and her cronies take care of it in a rented cottage and she now claims it is her own. As a result Charlie, not knowing why she makes such a claim, has her put into a sanitarium for mental cases, and he and Katherine take the baby and plan to send it to an orphanage as Katherine does not realize it is her own nephew.

Letitia "Tish" Carberry, an eccentric New England spinster, lives with her nephew, Charlie Sands, and her two cronies, Aggie Pilkington and Lizzie Wilkins, live in a near-by boarding house. Cora Edwards also lives at the boarding house and is in love with Charlie, who, however, loves Katherine "Kit" Bowser, the daughter of Judge Horace Bowser. Tish and her cronies promote a romance between Cora and Charlie, but Cora decides it is Theodore "Ted" Bowser she loves and they are secretly married before Ted leaves for a training school in Toronto, learning to ferry planes to England. Charlie and Katherine also elope secretly. Cora, anxious to join Ted, borrows money from the church organ fund and leaves, telling no one where she is going. Tish takes the blame for the shortage. Cora raises the money to repay Tish and goes to the post office, while Ted is on a flight. Before she mails it, she opens a letter she received from the Canadian government announcing Ted's loss at sea. She faints, is taken to the hospital and gives birth to a boy, and dies. The only clue to her identity is the letter addressed to Tish. She arrives, decides the baby is Charlie's son, declares herself the grandmother and takes it home. Once there, she and her cronies take care of it in a rented cottage and she now claims it is her own. As a result Charlie, not knowing why she makes such a claim, has her put into a sanitarium for mental cases, and he and Katherine take the baby and plan to send it to an orphanage as Katherine does not realize it is her own nephew.

TISH is the story of working-class photographer Tish Murtha, who captured the impact of Thatcherism on the north of England but was unable to escape the poverty and inequality she exposed.
Driven by a commitment to document the impact of deindustrialisation on working class communities in Northeast England in the 1970s and 1980s, Tish Murtha used her camera to expose societal inequality. She felt she had an obligation to the people and problems within her local environment, and that documentary photography could highlight and challenge the social disadvantages that she herself had suffered. However, despite early acclaim for her work, she was unable to make a living from photography and died in poverty.
The film is a journey of exploration for Ella Murtha as both daughter and custodian of the Tish Murtha archive, a chance to elevate and preserve a legacy that has been lost and to tell the story of an artist and woman outside of the ‘mother’ that existed for her – or the version of Tish claimed within dominant narratives of the 70s and 80s photography – from the people who knew Tish and the images she left behind.

Raw-boned, raspy-voiced, sixty-something Letitia "Tish" Carberry (Marjorie Main, who would find her greatest fame in the Ma Kettle film series) comes back to her hometown with a baby in her arms. "I'm a woman. It's a baby. It's mine!" she declares. Three splendid character actresses -- Main, Zasu Pitts and Aline MacMahon -- play three delightful spinsters in Tish, based on stories by Mary Roberts Rinehart. The old dears try their hands at matchmaking, get everything in a dreadful muddle, and end up caring for an orphaned baby they mistakenly believe is illegitimate. This warm comedy is laced with drama and punctuated with plenty of sight gags, including Main roller-skating in her Sunday best and the three stars tangling with a disgruntled bear on a camping trip.

Children playing on derelict streets, workers drinking pints after mass layoffs and disaffected youths hanging around wastelands… Tish Murtha's images of working-class life in North East England can be found in the National Portrait Gallery and Tate Britain. She started taking pictures of people in her own community in the West end of Newcastle in the 1970's. Although these days she is feted today as one of the country’s most important social documentary photographers, in her lifetime Murtha struggled to make a living and died penniless a decade ago at the age of 56. Her daughter has now made a film about her mother's life and work with director Paul Sng (Poly Styrene: I Am a cliché). She has been talking to Sharuna Sagar about this labour of love.

Tish Murtha's Photography made a huge impression on me when I first saw it. Looking at her work, and reading up about her background and process, it was clear she was someone who cared deeply about her subjects, and took the responsibility of telling their stories well very seriously. I think we can all learn a great deal about the art of documentary photography by spending time with her work.

tracks along an empty highway lead to somewhere else
All my past and all my wishes tears reflect on muddy
ditches
My own mind is searching for an answer from the eyes
that look right back
I want to know about the outer reaches
everything that heartbreak teaches
Questions of survival that in every soul exist
what about the endless sky
A child that wants to know just why
the world spins round and people die
And does it hurt well baby, so do I
Walking on the streets I've known a city that I once
called home
A stranger now another time that doesn't want me back
Poems in my native tongue whisper where I used to run
The river brushing by a shore that knew it all along
Here I stood and there I dreamed of future bright as
magazines
Without the shades of sorrow in between
Where we've been and what we've seen, are we taught or
are we teaching
Reaching seeking needing preaching pleading speeding
screeching to a halt
Cattle guards and power lines mark the distance of our
times
Like wheels that roll and bells that toll of hours and
aging wine
Love we gave and love we made gone astray and then
forgave
Naked as a masquerade for truth to figure out
Voices shout and voices sing words slip out and most
stay in
In symphonies that live within the pockets of our soul
Colors of the open sea paint the edges of a dream in
crystal blues
and deeper hues of wind and earth and God's own open
road
