As promised; my favorite series of all time, a very interesting watch! The fifth episode of: A Glorious Accident - Een schitterend ongeluk This was a 1993 documentary featuring several prominent scientists and philosophers about the ethics in life science, philosophy and what they thought science and all this knowledge had brought us in the end of the 20th century. An excellent 7-part documentary, also for the non-dutch of course. It was presented by a dutch presenter Wim Kayzer (so you do hear some dutch, but most of it is just dutch subbed) You will see respectively: episode 1 - Oliver sacks episode 2 - Rupert Sheldrake episode 3 - Daniel C. Dennett episode 4 - Stephen Toulmin episode 5 - Stephen Jay Gould episode 6 - Freeman Dyson episode 7- The Gathering In the 7th episode these geniuses are all brought together to discuss some of their extraordinary views. Captivating series! My personal favorites are the episodes with Rupert Sheldrake and the one with Daniel C Dennett. Back in 1993, being a 19-yr old student, I sometimes thought their theories were kind of outrageous, to be honest, but I already had great respect for the way they could explain and defend their "out-of-the-box" theories very thoroughly. Nowadays I find myself being drawn right back to the theories of Rupert Sheldrake, especially his "morphic field", morphic resonance theory. This series, all episodes of it, thoroughly influenced my own theory building over the years. Posted for discussion/educational purposes Wim Kayzer's VPRO-serie 'Een schitterend ongeluk', de serie uit 1993, waarin hij zes internationale topwetenschappers samenbracht. Neuroloog en psychiater Oliver Sacks schreef er later over: 'Die dag was wild, vreemd en belangwekkend... Ieder van ons is door die dag veranderd.' Naast Oliver Sacks had Kayzer zoöloog en paleontoloog Stephen Jay Gould uitgenodigd, de wetenschapsfilosoof Stephen Toulmin, de filosoof Daniel C. Dennett, de biochemicus en celbioloog Rupert Sheldrake en de natuurkundige Freeman Dyson. Met elkaar praatten ze over centrale vragen als: Tot waar bent u gekomen in uw begrip over ons denken en doen? En: Waartoe heeft de wetenschap ons eigenlijk gebracht aan het eind van de 20ste eeuw: kennis of begrip?
