Why I voted Yes on S. 684

I voted Yes on S. 684, to provide for the conveyance of certain parcels of land to the town of Alta, Utah.

S. 684 conveys to the town of Alta, Utah up to two acres from a National Forest in Salt Lake County. Under the bill, no compensation would be required from the town but the town would pay survey and other costs associated with the transfer. The town would only be allowed to use the land for public purposes and the land would revert back to the National Forest System if it was used for other purposes.

The town of Alta is the location of a popular ski area, and none of the land within the municipality is actually owned by the town. Much of the municipal infrastructure is located in the National Forest, but the town operates on this land pursuant to special use permits. This legislation would give the town of Alta greater flexibility and certainty in the maintenance and continued use of its infrastructure by transferring actual ownership to the town.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that the bill would have no significant impact on the federal budget.

S. 684 was approved by a vote of 383 – 3.
