Why I voted Yes on S. 1603

I voted “Yes” on S. 1603, the Gun Lake Trust Land Reaffirmation Act.

This bill would allow the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians to continue operating a casino that has been open for the past three years on a tract of land in Wayland, Michigan.  Further, any lawsuits related to the land that was put in trust with the Department of the Interior would be prohibited.

I supported this bill because it clarifies that the land in question is rightfully held in trust based and it prevents legal uncertainty for a business with more than 800 employees.

S. 1603 passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 359 – 64.
