As a songwriter, she has composed over 3,000 songs, the best known of which include "I Will Always Love You" (a two-time U.S. country chart-topper for Parton, as well an international pop hit for Whitney Houston), "Jolene", "Coat of Many Colors", "9 to 5" and "My Tennessee Mountain Home". As an actress, she starred in the movies 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Steel Magnolias, Straight Talk, Unlikely Angel and Joyful Noise. She is known as "The Queen of Country Music".
She was born in Sevierville, Tennessee, the fourth of twelve children of Avie Lee Parton (née Owens; October 5, 1923 – December 5, 2003) and Robert Lee Parton (March 22, 1921 – November 12, 2000), a tobacco farmer. Her siblings are: Willadeene Parton (born March 24, 1940), David Wilburn Parton (born March 30, 1942), Coy Denver "Denver" Parton (born August 16, 1943), Bobby Lee Parton (born February 18, 1948), Stella Mae Parton (born May 4, 1949), Cassie Nan Parton (February 12, 1951), Randel Huston "Randy" Parton (born December 15, 1953), Larry Gerald Parton (born and died July 6, 1955), Floyd and Frieda Estelle Parton (born June 1, 1957), and Rachel Ann Parton (born August 31, 1959). Her family was, as she has described them, "dirt poor". She outlined her family's lack of money in a number of her early songs, notably "Coat of Many Colors" and "In the Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad)". They lived in a rustic, dilapidated one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, a hamlet just north of the Greenbrier Valley, in the Locust Ridge area of the Great Smoky Mountains in Sevier County, a predominantly Pentecostal area.

There's a picture that I carry
One we made some time ago
When they ask who's in the picture with me
I say just someone I used to know
Just someone I used to spend some time with
Just a flame that's lost its glow
But I don't tell them of the nights I cried without you
I say just someone I used to know
Just someone I used to run around with
Just a friend from long ago
I don't tell them how lost I am without you
I say just someone I used to know
I say just someone I used to know

Hello Dolly
Yes, hello Dolly
Now I'm mighty glad your back
Where you belong, Dolly
Here's a song, Dolly
But if it were up to me I'd send you home
Well it gets worse, Dolly
Another verse, Dolly
Well how many more bad things
Can I say about you, Dolly
Get a clue, Dolly
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Well the holidays were good to you
And you got everything that you wanted to
And now I really hope to God all of your wishes come true
'Cause it's over between me and you
So the next time your around, stay
Next time your around, stay
Next time your around, stay away
Dolly stay away
Dolly stay away
Well hello Dolly

You know I'm ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma, ma

And now I really hope to God all of your wishes come true
'Cause it's over between me and you
I hope all that my wishes come true
Stare at the cracks, when there's nothin' to do

YEAH - YEAH - YEAH
It won't be long now till scientists
Program a soul into the A.I.
Accelerated by tools of war
Our science is religion
To bring you back into this world
I'd break every rule
Machines try to take me to hell
I don't really care - I do it for love
Build a tower tall and strong It will be beautiful
Using our technology Babel will stand anew
A clone created on English soil
Where does her soul come from, I wonder
No need to challenge the Cherubim
The fallacy, God's failure
To bring you back into this world
I'd break every rule
Machines try to take me to hell
I don't really care - I do it for love
Build a tower tall and strong It will be beautiful
Using our technology Babel will stand anew
"My name is Dolly
Why was I made?
Where did my soul come from? Where will it go?
Oh, my creator, please tell me."
I'll take every blow that comes
Commit such unspeakable sins
They won't mean a thing
To bring you back into this world
I'd break every rule
Machines try to take me to hell
I don't really care - I do it for love
Build a tower tall and strong
It will be beautiful
Using our technology
I took my dolly of the shelf her teardrops were dry,
She looked so familiar she made me vomit but she didn't make me cry,
I said get me a cookie cause I really need one
Not choclate chip or mint milano marzipan nipples on her little girl breats
Dolly dolly dolly let me put you on the shelf I don't want to play with you any more
Dolly dolly dolly let me put you on the shelf
Her eyes were to blue and his whiskers hurt my face.
Once I slept in her arms and now I slept in his
He threw me away but now he's back to worship me.
Cause that's what glass dorrs are made for, not lingerie or china cups
That's what glass is made for to hide the dollies i don't wanna play with anymore.
Dolly dolly dolly let me put you on the shelf i don't want to play with you any more
Long time ago, when Dolly was seven
Young Sally Hudson has driven her here
Summer has came to the streets of uptown
Little Dolly was pretty and clear
"Sweetie, I'm getting too old for the moppets
Find someone else to play with", Sally said
She left the doll in a store of her dad
But it wasn't a shop for nymphets
"WHAT DO I DO IN THIS HORRIBLE HALL?
LITTLE GIRLS WHO MIGHT NEED ME DON'T COME HERE AT ALL!
RADIANT EYES AND A SMILE ON MY FACE
NO ONE NEEDS THEM IN THIS SILLY PLACE!"
Sleeping at night on a glass-case of dildos
Watching some horrible clips on TV
Losing the hope Dolly falls in despair
'Cause it's not that she wanted to see
Pink furry handcuffs and orange pillboxes
Strange rubber stuff and some violet creams
Day after day people buy all these things
Forcing Dolly to bury her dreams
"WHAT DO I DO IN THIS HORRIBLE HALL?
LITTLE GIRLS WHO MIGHT NEED ME DON'T COME HERE AT ALL!
RADIANT EYES AND A SMILE ON MY FACE...
WHAT THE HELL DOES A SMILE ON MY FACE?!
(LET HER OUT...)
OH, PLEASE LET ME OUT OF THIS PLACE!"
"Such an odious room! What a sinkhole!
Never thought I could hate it so much!
Twenty one years in latex inferno
Twenty one years without a touch
Sally, I loved you! And what?!
You left me down here to rot!"
Deep in the night Mr. Hudson was roused
Hearing a tinkle of glass in the hall
Silence was broken with sounds of sirens
Someone has stolen the doll
Someone has stolen the doll
