The Palme d'Or (English: Golden Palm) is the highest prize awarded at the Cannes Film Festival and is presented to the director of the best feature film of the official competition. It was introduced in 1955 by the organising committee. From 1939 to 1954, the highest prize was the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film. From 1964 to 1974, it was replaced once again, by the Grand Prix du Festival.
Through 1954, the Jury of the Festival de Cannes awarded a "Grand Prix of the International Film Festival", with a new design each year from a contemporary artist. At the end of 1954, the Festival's Board of Directors invited several jewellers to submit designs for a palm, in tribute to the coat of arms of the City of Cannes. The original design by the jeweller Lucienne Lazon had the bevelled lower extremity of the stalk forming a heart, and the pedestal a sculpture in terracotta by the artist Sébastien.
In 1955, the first Palme d'Or was awarded to Delbert Mann for Marty, and it remained the highest award until 1964, when copyright issues with the Palme led the Festival to return to the Grand Prix. In 1975 the Palme d'Or was reintroduced and has since remained the symbol of the Cannes Film Festival, awarded every year to the director of the Best Feature Film of the Official Competition, and presented in a case of pure red Morocco leather lined with white suede.

Abdellatif Kechiche (Arabic: عبد اللطيف كشيش, born December 7, 1960 in Tunis, Tunisia) is an actor, movie director and screenwriter. He made his directorial debut in 2000 with La Faute à Voltaire (Blame it on Voltaire), aka Poetical Refugee, which he also wrote. He also directed L'Esquive, which won a César Award for Best Film and Best Director. He has presented recently his last film La Graine et le Mulet on 64th Mostra del Cinema at Venezia for which he was awarded the Special Jury Prize, the FIPRESCI Prize, such as later the Louis Delluc Prize and others César Awards for Best Film and Best Director.
As an actor, his introduction to most English-speaking audiences was starring as Ashade the taxi driver in the 2005 psychological thriller "Sorry, Haters", an "official selection" in both the Toronto and American Film Institute's film festivals.

David Keith Lynch (born January 20, 1946) is an American filmmaker, television director, visual artist, comic book artist, musician and occasional actor. Known for his surrealist films, he has developed his own unique cinematic style, which has been dubbed "Lynchian", and which is characterized by its dream imagery, and meticulous sound design. The surreal, and in many cases violent, elements to his films have earned them the reputation that they "disturb, offend or mystify" their audiences.
Born to a middle class family in Missoula, Montana, Lynch spent his childhood traveling around the United States, before going on to study painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he first made the transition to producing short films. Deciding to devote himself more fully to this medium, he moved to Los Angeles, where he produced his first motion picture, the surrealist horror Eraserhead (1977). After Eraserhead became a cult classic on the midnight movie circuit, Lynch was employed to direct The Elephant Man (1980), from which he gained mainstream success. Then being employed by the De Laurentiis Entertainment Group, he proceeded to make two films: the science-fiction epic Dune (1984), which proved to be a critical and commercial failure, and then a neo-noir crime film, Blue Velvet (1986), which was highly critically acclaimed.

Steven Allan Spielberg (born December 18, 1946) is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, video game designer, and studio entrepreneur. In a career of more than four decades, Spielberg's films have covered many themes and genres. Spielberg's early science-fiction and adventure films were seen as archetypes of modern Hollywood blockbuster filmmaking. In later years, his films began addressing such issues as the Holocaust, slavery, war and terrorism. He is considered one of the most popular and influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. He is also one of the co-founders of DreamWorks movie studio.
Spielberg won the Academy Award for Best Director for Schindler's List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Three of Spielberg's films—Jaws (1975), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic Park (1993)—achieved box office records, each becoming the highest-grossing film made at the time. To date, the unadjusted gross of all Spielberg-directed films exceeds $8.5 billion worldwide. Forbes puts Spielberg's wealth at $3.0 billion.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkish pronunciation: [ˈnuːri ˈbilɡe ˈdʒejlan]; born 26 January 1959 in Istanbul) is a Turkish photographer and film director. He is married to the filmmaker, photographer, and actress Ebru Ceylan, his co-star in İklimler (Climates).
Ceylan learned photography at age 15, and developed an interest in film at 22. While Ceylan study at Bogazici University, he participated cinema and photography clubs and he took passport-style photos to make pocket money. After graduating from university with a BSC degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, he went to London and Kathmandu to decide what he should do in life. Then he went to Ankara back to do military service. When he was in the army, he found out how to give shape to the rest of his life 'cinema'. Ceylan's first short film Koza (Cocoon) was screened in the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. He received many awards with his debut feature Kasaba (Small Town). His third feature Uzak (Distant) received many awards including the Grand Jury Prize and the Best Actor Prize at Cannes, and was praised internationally. His 2006 film Iklimler (Climates) won the FIPRESCI Movie Critics' Award at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and received international praise by critics and experts. The film won 5 awards at the 2006 Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, bringing him the "Best Director" title. During the preparation of this movie, Ceylan turned his attentions to photography again. From this point on, he began devoting his time to both cinema and photography. "Turkey Cinemascope" is a book of Panoramic Photographs of Turkey by Nuri Bilge Ceylan between the years 2003 and 2009. He won the best director award in the 2008 Cannes Film Festival for Üç Maymun (Three Monkeys). At the end of his speech, Ceylan stated, "I dedicate this award to my beautiful and lonely country, which I love passionately."

Au cas où je n'aurais pas la palme d'or (2011)
Plot
Since his directorial debut 10 years ago, Simon, a forty something filmmaker, nowadays spends more time shooting the breeze than shooting films. Following a silly bet he makes with an actor friend, he shaves his head and discovers a huge bizarre hump in the middle of his skull. Sick with worry, he consults a plethora of doctors, none can reassure him. Is it a fatal disease? Is he dying? How long does he have? As he anxiously waits for results, he decides to make a quick, no budget film about his life; perhaps his very last.

Winner of the coveted Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the new film from Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan (ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA) is an immersive and provocative drama.
Set in the picturesque and striking landscape of Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, Winter Sleep focuses on a small village, half-empty, in the wintry off-season. The film follows a local celebrity, Aydin (Haluk Bilginer), an actor who runs a small hotel with his wife, writes a column for the local newspaper, and is toying with the idea of producing a book on Turkish theatre.
Like all the villagers, Aydin has time on his hands, but as Ceylan’s film progresses, the director carefully strips away the veneer that surrounds this self-satisfied and insular man. Through some magnificent set pieces, beautifully written and performed, we get a close look at Aydin’s interactions with his wife, his recently divorced sister, and a family of locals who are tenants of one of his properties.

Candidat sérieux à la Palme d'or 2012 et deux ans seulement après le triomphe d'Un prophète, De rouille et d'os a définitivement inscrit Jacques Audiard dans la catégorie des grands réalisateurs français. Une histoire rebutante et magnifique, à voir ou à revoir ce soir sur France 2.
Fuyant chômage et pauvreté, Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts, à l'affiche depuis le 12 novembre de Quand vient la nuit) quitte le nord de la France, son fils de 5 ans sous le bras, et trouve refuge chez sa soeur, caissière sur la Côte d'Azur. Ce n'est pas la panacée, mais l'accueil y est familial et chaleureux. Il y fait également la connaissance de la belle Stéphanie (Marion Cotillard), dresseuse d'orques. Cette dernière l'appelle un soir: victime d'un accident du travail, elle vient de perdre ses deux jambes. Comment leur relation va-t-elle évoluer? C'est ce à quoi s'attache minutieusement De rouille et d'os. Le récit de l'histoire d'amour née entre Ali, dans le rôle du colosse, ou plutôt de la brute épaisse, et Stéphanie, dans celui de la beauté amputée.
«Chaque film produit son antidote, dira Jacques Audiard. Après Un prophète, film d'hommes, enfermé, sans lumière, sans amour, je me suis retrouvé très naturellement avec le désir de faire un film avec de la lumière, un champ plus large, une femme et une histoire d'amour.» En effet. Inspiré d'un recueil de nouvelles de l'écrivain canadien Craig Davidson, le film, qualifié par les uns de «romance estropiée» et les autres de «grands corps malades», joue avec génie de la sensibilité du spectateur et de son rejet quasi instinctif du handicap ou de la déformation. Sauf qu'il n'y a chez Audiard ni volonté sensationnaliste, ni voyeurisme, ni facilité scénaristique, ni dégoulinade dramatique. Même les scènes de combat, de désespoir ou de sexe, pourtant très crues, sont belles.

Chronique évenementielle de l'histoire de l'Algérie de 1939 a 1954, date du déclenchement de la lutte armée. Le film s'articule autour de deux axes fondamentaux : l'expropriation des terres et la déculturation. Il montre en quoi le 1er novembre 1954 est l'aboutissement de la lutte multiforme du peuple algérien pour résister à la colonisation, depuis ses débuts. Palme d'or, Cannes 1975.
Film en six volets:
1. LES ANNEES DE CENDRE. Algérie, 1939. Ahmed, paysan pauvre, vit avec sa famille dans une réserve. La sécheresse sévit et les tribus s'affrontent pour l'eau monopolisée par les colons. Ahmed travaille dans une carrière mais se heurte au contremaitre et à la police. Il s'exile en ville avec sa famille et y rencontre Miloud, vieux sage et devin.
2. L'ANNEE DE LA CHARRETTE. Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, les privations déclenchent une épidémie de typhus qui emporte la famille d'Ahmed. Seul rescapé avec son jeune fils Smaïl, Ahmed retourne au bled.
3. LES ANNEES DE BRAISE. Les tribus s'unissent face à la richesse des colons. Ahmed est mobilisé. En 1945, il rentre et participe aux premières révoltes pour l'indépendance, menées par Si Larbi, et subit la répression.
4. L'ANNEE DE LA CHARGE. Lors des élections de 1947, la révolte gronde et face aux nationalistes modérés, La résistance s'organise. Larbi est tué et Ahmed envoyé au bagne.
5. LES ANNEES DE FEU. Miloud et Smaïl entraînent le peuple à la révolte. Ahmed et ses amis se sont évadés et entrent dans la résistance, devenant des symboles populaires. Lors d'une répression sanglante Ahmed est tué.
6. 11 NOVEMBRE 1954. La révolte populaire a éclaté au grand jour et Smaïl a repris le flambeau, parcourant la montagne.

On disc & digital March 20 http://www.madman.com.au Winner of the coveted Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the new film from Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan (ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA) is an immersive and provocative drama. Set in the picturesque and striking landscape of Cappadocia in Central Anatolia, Winter Sleep focuses on a small village, half-empty, in the wintry off-season. The film follows a local celebrity, Aydin (Haluk Bilginer), an actor who runs a small hotel with his wife, writes a column for the local newspaper, and is toying with the idea of producing a book on Turkish theatre. Like all the villagers, Aydin has time on his hands, but as Ceylan’s film progresses, the director carefully strips away the veneer that surrounds this self-satisfied and insular man. Through some magnificent set pieces, beautifully written and performed, we get a close look at Aydin’s interactions with his wife, his recently divorced sister, and a family of locals who are tenants of one of his properties. De rouille et d'os, l'amour à corps perdus Candidat sérieux à la Palme d'or 2012 et deux ans seulement après le triomphe d'Un prophète, De rouille et d'os a définitivement inscrit Jacques Audiard dans la catégorie des grands réalisateurs français. Une histoire rebutante et magnifique, à voir ou à revoir ce soir sur France 2. Fuyant chômage et pauvreté, Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts, à l'affiche depuis le 12 novembre de Quand vient la nuit) quitte le nord de la France, son fils de 5 ans sous le bras, et trouve refuge chez sa soeur, caissière sur la Côte d'Azur. Ce n'est pas la panacée, mais l'accueil y est familial et chaleureux. Il y fait également la connaissance de la belle Stéphanie (Marion Cotillard), dresseuse d'orques. Cette dernière l'appelle un soir: victime d'un accident du travail, elle vient de perdre ses deux jambes. Comment leur relation va-t-elle évoluer? C'est ce à quoi s'attache minutieusement De rouille et d'os. Le récit de l'histoire d'amour née entre Ali, dans le rôle du colosse, ou plutôt de la brute épaisse, et Stéphanie, dans celui de la beauté amputée. «Chaque film produit son antidote, dira Jacques Audiard. Après Un prophète, film d'hommes, enfermé, sans lumière, sans amour, je me suis retrouvé très naturellement avec le désir de faire un film avec de la lumière, un champ plus large, une femme et une histoire d'amour.» En effet. Inspiré d'un recueil de nouvelles de l'écrivain canadien Craig Davidson, le film, qualifié par les uns de «romance estropiée» et les autres de «grands corps malades», joue avec génie de la sensibilité du spectateur et de son rejet quasi instinctif du handicap ou de la déformation. Sauf qu'il n'y a chez Audiard ni volonté sensationnaliste, ni voyeurisme, ni facilité scénaristique, ni dégoulinade dramatique. Chronique évenementielle de l'histoire de l'Algérie de 1939 a 1954, date du déclenchement de la lutte armée. Le film s'articule autour de deux axes fondamentaux : l'expropriation des terres et la déculturation. Il montre en quoi le 1er novembre 1954 est l'aboutissement de la lutte multiforme du peuple algérien pour résister à la colonisation, depuis ses débuts. Palme d'or, Cannes 1975. Film en six volets: 1. LES ANNEES DE CENDRE. Algérie, 1939. Ahmed, paysan pauvre, vit avec sa famille dans une réserve. La sécheresse sévit et les tribus s'affrontent pour l'eau monopolisée par les colons. Ahmed travaille dans une carrière mais se heurte au contremaitre et à la police. Il s'exile en ville avec sa famille et y rencontre Miloud, vieux sage et devin. 2. L'ANNEE DE LA CHARRETTE. Pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, les privations déclenchent une épidémie de typhus qui emporte la famille d'Ahmed. Seul rescapé avec son jeune fils Smaïl, Ahmed retourne au bled. 3. LES ANNEES DE BRAISE. Les tribus s'unissent face à la richesse des colons. Ahmed est mobilisé. En 1945, il rentre et participe aux premières révoltes pour l'indépendance, menées par Si Larbi, et subit la répression. 4. L'ANNEE DE LA CHARGE. Lors des élections de 1947, la révolte gronde et face aux nationalistes modérés, La résistance s'organise. Larbi est tué et Ahmed envoyé au bagne. 5. LES ANNEES DE FEU. Miloud et Smaïl entraînent le peuple à la révolte. Ahmed et ses amis se sont évadés et entrent dans la résistance, devenant des symboles populaires. Lors d'une répression sanglante Ahmed est tué. 6. 11 NOVEMBRE 1954. La révolte populaire a éclaté au grand jour et Smaïl a repris le flambeau, parcourant la montagne.- published: 26 Nov 2014
