Sique Sique Sputnik – 21st Century Boy (12″)

sigueyplayedMore silly stuff from 1986 and the follow up to the Number One smash of “Love Missile..” Trashy, manufactured , sampled , glam and stolen. This pre empted “Pop Idol” and “X Factor” as manufactured Pop, albeit if Elvis had got into samplers. Such a fun 12″ mix and so inventive with the legend of Giorgio Moroder on production. The B-side uses exactly the same bass line and ingredients , long live SSS!

Eartha Kitt And Bronski Beat – Cha Cha Heels (12″)

earthakittcov From 1989 and more silliness with the late, legendary Eartha Kitt going all Hi NRG with a song originally intended for Divine, who had died the previous year. Camp and cheesy with a slightly Stock, Aiken and Waterman production to it. Both the 7″ and 12″ mixes are here plus an amazing slice of jazz swing with the B-side “My Discarded Men”

Half Man Half Biscuit With Margi Clarke – No Regrets (12″)

More silly stuff with a cover of the classic Edif Piaf song by a bunch of scousers. From 1991 and featuring the quite good voice of actress Margi Clark and Liverpool band Half Man Half Biscuit, this seems a bit of a tribute to the late Sid Vicious and his solo material, punked up classics. It shouldn’t work but does and I loved hearing it again. The long version has extra swirling and singalong bits. “1966 And All That” , a live track has some wry lyrics “Brown Anorak” eat your heart out Nick Cave!

Doctor & The Medics – Burn E.P. (12″)

doctored It will soon be the silly season as Christmas parties get underway so here is a brief series of slightly silly records. Putting the fun back into glam, albeit still labelled one hit wonders we have Doctor & The Medics and the 4 track “Burn” E.P. from 1986. The follow up to their massive hit “Spirit In The Sky” this was itself minor hit and jangles along with 60 ‘s psychedelia and female backing vocals (by the Anadin Brothers) . The grand father of The Darkness Mr Clive Jackson was more of a live event and this contains a splendid, thrashy version of Sabbath’s “Paranoid” played at a 120 miles an hour. Other tracks include a piratey “Captain Frazer” and the epic “Love Peace And Bananas” which has a bit of The Doors thrown in.

a-ha – Stay On These Roads (12″)

a-hahaha From 1988 (didn’t know it was that late) and the huge electro ballad from Norway’s finest Pop exports, a-ha. Off their same named 3rd album this was their last Top 5 hit in the UK.

Anorak fact from Wiki “A Roland D-50 was used on this song—the sound patch is called “Staccato Heaven”—the wind sound during the instrumental was made on either a Roland Juno 60 or Juno 106 synthesizer.” and I have the same synth knocking about at home !

John Hudson (Visage, Ultravox ) mixed the 12″ version giving it a much fuller sound. B-side , “Soft Rains Of April” is an earlier, synthier,  stripped down version of an earlier album track, “Scoundrel Days”

Dexy’s Midnight Runners – Celtic Soul Brothers (12″)

dexydex The main aim of the blog was to never post the obvious, e.g. the stuff that gets regurgitated on those 80’s compilations that lots of people who buy them think that was just all the 80’s music that ever came out, “Come On Eileen” or “Geno” would be your only exposure to Dexy’s , but there was so much more to them. I was not a massive fan, too much fiddly dee for my liking, but you have to admire Kevin Rowland and his unique voice and off kilter song-writing. This was from the rerelease from 1983 and off a pristine 12″, it’s short and jaunty with a motown swing to it and probably a certain Robert Smith was listening (Lovecats by The Cure anyone ?) As usual the B-sides are included with a rip roaring, live version of “Show Me” with the amazing brass section and the decidedly odd “Reminisce Part One” with spoken lyrics reflecting the time and the immortal words “Ken Livingstone is a folk hero!”

The Christians – What’s In A Word (12″)

christianedSomeone mentioned they would like to see some Christians up on here, seeing that it’s Sunday I acquired this little gem released in 1992. Smooth and soulful, ideal for a Sunday afternoon chill. This was taken from their 3rd Album, “Happy In Hell” , which is also included. The thing I liked about them was they always some interesting electronics going on in the background, it wasn’t just harmonized soul over a traditional backing, “Forgotten Town” being a fine example of this mix of technology and soul. This was produced by Martyn Phillips and in places reminds me of Propaganda’s “Heaven Give Me Words”  Here in the definitive , full length version with all its electro bubbling’s. Additionally, “Happy In Hell” showcases those famous harmonies with a rerecorded, older B-side, “You Never Know” that has some interesting , spoken word samples in it.

Sisters Of Mercy – Dominion (12″)

sisterly No one can write about the apocalypse better than Andrew Eldritch. Doom and gloom from 1988 with the bizarre involvement of a certain Jim Steinman (the man who produced Meatloaf’s Bat Out Of Hell) This is just the single version without the “Mother Russia” added bit, as ground breaking as the more well known “This Corrision.” This sees Eldritch finally define himself as the anti-rock star he always wanted to be , helped by his then partner the vampish , Patricia Morrison.

The other tracks comprise of “Untitled” , a slowed down instrumental that uses parts of “Dominion”, “Sandstorm”, a short saxophone led track that appears at the start of the video and the wonderful, passionate cover version “Emma”. This track was originally recorded by Hot Chocolate in 1974 and was co-written by Errol Brown, it is slightly different to the original, that is all I am saying!

Death Cult – God’s Zoo (12″)

deathculty My 700th Post (TAAADAAAA!!!)

After much enquiry and deliberation I made the decision on a recommendation by my mate Hairy Al a long time Death Cult/Cult fan who put me onto this beauty. From 1983 and sounding like Bloc Party had a lot to answer for! B-side is a brings out the bassline and has the sinister spoken word ending, “We Are All Flies” , “Thieving Hands” very appropriate seeing the pure greed of Black Friday.

It’s full on Indie dance with Duffy’s guitar making it’s usual jagged shapes.

Ward Brothers – Cross That Bridge (12″)

crossbridgecov From 1986 and the weird combination of legendary producer Don Was (of Was (Not Was)) and three brothers from Barnsley, Yorkshire. This is classic 80’s pop/rock with some added electronics. Big drums, solid bassline and some atmospheric guitar work and that annoyingly catchy riff. Suitably extended with a very effective dub mix on the flip.
