In a one-hour documentary scheduled for broadcast this December, WUGA-TV showcases a current exhibition on Russian art at the Georgia Museum of Art. In the program, "Two Powerful Women: The Collectors of Russian Art," WUGA-TV news anchor Alexia Ridley guides viewers through works of decorative art that were once commissioned for Catherine the Great's use or given as gifts in her court.
The documentary shares stories behind such centerpiece items as a solid gold chalice decorated with dazzling diamonds and cameos or a famous Wedgwood Green Frog Service. Video recorded in Russia this summer is an exclusive peek at Catherine the Great's museum, the Hermitage, in St. Petersburg.
The documentary also captures music performed at UGA's Performing Arts Center that was once played in the court of Catherine the Great and reveals how she used music to move her political and artistic ambitions forward in the 1700s.
The documentary presents a clear historical picture of the empress and reveals why the exhibition "Exuberance of Meaning: The Art Patronage of Catherine the Great (1762-1796)" is important for both students and art patrons on the UGA campus. The exhibition runs through Jan. 5.
The exhibition features pieces purchased in Russia in the 1930s by Marjorie Merriweather Post, the sole heir to the multimillion-dollar Post Cereal Company. Post's purchases formed Hillwood's Russian collection.
The initial telecast of "Two Powerful Women" is scheduled for Dec. 11 at 9 p.m. with 15 additional broadcasts scheduled at various dates and times during the month. Broadcast details are available at wugatv.org.
"Two Powerful Women" is produced by Melissa Jackson, a producer/director at WUGA-TV, with guidance from Asen Kirin, curator and the exhibition and associate professor of art and associate director of UGA's Lamar Dodd School of Art, along with production support from students in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

The great-granddaughter of General Foods founder and heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post has been found slain at her luxury spa resort on the Caribbean island of Roatan, Honduras police said Friday.
Roatan police chief Alex Madrid said Nedenia Post Dye, 46, was found stabbed in her room on December 22. He said police had arrested a local singer whom Dye was helping quit drugs.
'She was a good woman who worked with young people at risk, drug addicts and alcoholics,' Madrid said.

The suspect, Lenin Roberto Arana, 25, told police that he and Dye had been romantically involved, Madrid said. Arana, who used the stage name 'The Canary,' told local reporters that he was innocent.
Madrid said Dye had been living for 15 years on Roatan, where she ran the Baan Suerte luxury spa.

Dye, of Santa Monica, California, told an alumni publication of her alma mater, George Washington University, last year that she shared a love of risk-taking and adventure with her great-grandmother, who inherited the cereal company that she eventually turned into General Foods Inc.
'My friend and I had an idea to start a business,' Dye told the alumni magazine. 'I wanted to go to Asia but she said "No, Central America is closer. If (the business) fails, we can swim home."'
Madrid said Arana had been captured wearing blood-soaked clothing as he tried to flee in Dye's car.
'I'm innocent,' Arana told local reporters. 'Nedenia was like a mother to me. She protected me.'
Police said Dye appeared to have been stabbed many times in the back.

'He allegedly killed her because he wanted to get crack. It was apparent he was under the influence of drugs. He has been charged with her murder. Her body has been transferred to the mainland for an autopsy.'
Other reports call Arana Dye's husband.
Roatan is an island renowned for its scenic beaches, scuba diving, luxury resorts and vacation homes.

Marjorie Merriweather Post
Marjorie Merriweather Post (March 15, 1887 – September 12, 1973 in Springfield, Illinois) was a leading American socialite and the founder of General Foods, Inc.
She was the daughter of C. W. Post and Ella Letitia Merriweather. At age 27, when her father died, she became the owner of the rapidly growing Postum Cereal Company, founded in 1895. She was subsequently the wealthiest woman in the United States, with a fortune worth about US$250 million.
Education
She attended the Mount Vernon College for Women (now the George Washington University Mount Vernon Campus). Post maintained a close lifelong relationship with her alma mater and served as the first alumna trustee of Mount Vernon Seminary and College. Today, a collection of her papers, including correspondence, photographs, invitations, and memorabilia, is maintained by GWU's Special Collections Research Center.
Marriages
Post married four times. In 1905, she married investment banker Edward Bennett Close of Greenwich, Connecticut, and they divorced in 1919. Their eldest daughter, Adelaide, married three times, to Thomas Wells Durant, Merrall MacNeille, and Augustus Riggs. Their second daughter, Eleanor Post Close, later known in the media as Eleanor Post Hutton, married six times, to film director Preston Sturges, Etienne Marie Robert Gautier, George Curtis Rand, Hans Habe, Owen D. Johnson (son of author Owen Johnson), and orchestral conductor Leon Barzin. (Via his second marriage, Edward Bennett Close would become the paternal grandfather of actress Glenn Close.)

The documentary presents a clear historical picture of the empress and reveals why the exhibition "Exuberance of Meaning: The Art Patronage of Catherine the Great (1762-1796)" is important for both students and art patrons on the UGA campus. The exhibition runs through Jan. 5.
The exhibition features pieces purchased in Russia in the 1930s by Marjorie Merriweather Post, the sole heir to the multimillion-dollar Post Cereal Company. Post's purchases formed Hillwood's Russian collection.
The initial telecast of "Two Powerful Women" is scheduled for Dec. 11 at 9 p.m. with 15 additional broadcasts scheduled at various dates and times during the month. Broadcast details are available at wugatv.org.
"Two Powerful Women" is produced by Melissa Jackson, a producer/director at WUGA-TV, with guidance from Asen Kirin, curator and the exhibition and associate professor of art and associate director of UGA's Lamar Dodd School of Art, along with production support from students in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

'My friend and I had an idea to start a business,' Dye told the alumni magazine. 'I wanted to go to Asia but she said "No, Central America is closer. If (the business) fails, we can swim home."'
Madrid said Arana had been captured wearing blood-soaked clothing as he tried to flee in Dye's car.
'I'm innocent,' Arana told local reporters. 'Nedenia was like a mother to me. She protected me.'
Police said Dye appeared to have been stabbed many times in the back.
