Marv Johnson sings "Come To Me", a single from 1959 and featured on his 1960 album, 'Marvelous Marv Johnson'.

Ah...Marvellous Marv Johnson. He was the very first artist to launch the entire Motown record company. His first single, "Come To Me", was the very first record on the Tamla label, in 1958, Tamla 101. Berry Gordy had no money to distribute it, so Berry and Marv went all round Detroit themselves, and sold the singles from out of their car boots. It started to create a local buzz in Detroit, and they couldn't afford to press and promote it, so they sold the rights to United Artists. The rest is history. This remake of Marv's huge UK Motown hit from 1968, "I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose", was one of the first things we cut for the Motorcity Project. Anyway, back in the late 1950s, Marv's second single, after "Come To Me", was "You Got What It Takes", which made number one in the pop charts. Of course Berry had done a ridiculous deal, and they earned a mere pittance, but what pittance there was earned, was used to found the entire Motown operation, and for Berry's fiancee, Raynoma, to buy the house in West Grand Boulevard, which became Hitsville USA. It took Berry five years before he could get Marv away from United Artists, by which time, with huge hits from The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, Barrett Strong, and of course The Miracles, Marv got left behind and his career neglected. By the mid to late sixties, he was still recording at Motown, but to earn his keep, he'd been relegated to the job of janitor, a tragedy considering there would have been no Motown without Marv,. Marv lived to sing, loved to record for Motorcity, and out of all 108 former Motown artists that we recorded, he had to be the most loyal and the most grateful of all of them. He stayed at my house so many times, he did so many shows for us, both in England and in Detroit, and he was always so proud of having a career again in the limelight. "I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose" was one of his very first recordings for Motorcity, and we eventually did enough for two albums. Marv was always a gentleman, and always so appreciative for anything you might do for him. He was so excited to go on the Joan Rivers Show, the one with all the old Motown artists, and on it, he not only mentioned me, but particularly he thanked my Mother for all her support to keep Motorcity going. Then in 1993, Marv was on stage in Carolina with the Drifters, and he staggered oddly while on stage, fumbled his way to the side of the stage, and dropped dead of a burst blood vessel in his brain. He was singing one minute and dead the next. But if he could have chosen any way in the world to go, there is no way he would rather have gone than singing and performing live to an appreciative audience, right up to his last minute on this Earth.

Marv Johnson (October 15, 1938 – May 16, 1993) was an American R&B and soul singer, most notable for performing on the first record to be issued from what became Motown.
Marvin Earl Johnson was born in Detroit, Michigan. He began his career singing with a doo-wop group called the Serenaders in the mid 1950s. With budding talents not only as a singer but as a songwriter and pianist, he was discovered by Berry Gordy while Johnson performed at a carnival. Gordy had already decided to form his first record label, Tamla, and Johnson's recording of their song "Come to Me" became the label's first single in May 1959. The fledgling label did not have national distribution and so the song was released by United Artists, and reached #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Johnson would co-write another four songs with Gordy.
Between 1959 and 1961, Johnson would issue nine Billboard Hot 100 singles including two Top 10s. The first of them was "You Got What It Takes", which reached #10 in the US and #7 in the UK Singles Chart. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. "I Love The Way You Love" reached #9. He scored his final US Top 40 single in 1960 with "(You've Got To) Move Two Mountains". It also sold a million copies, giving Johnson his second gold disc.

This is a part of the huge Motorcity Reunion that I put together between 1987 and 1992, recording 108 former artists of Motown across a massive eight hundred and fifty songs. Ah...Marvellous Marv Johnson. He was the very first artist to launch the entire Motown record company. His first single, "Come To Me", was the very first record on the Tamla label, in 1958, Tamla 101. Berry Gordy had no money to distribute it, so Berry and Marv went all round Detroit themselves, and sold the singles from out of their car boots. It started to create a local buzz in Detroit, and they couldn't afford to press and promote it, so they sold the rights to United Artists. The rest is history. Marv lived to sing, loved to record for Motorcity, and out of all 108 former Motown artists that we recorded, he had to be the most loyal and the most grateful of all of them. He stayed at my house so many times, he did so many shows for us, both in England and in Detroit, and he was always so proud of having a career again in the limelight. "I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose" was one of his very first recordings for Motorcity, and we eventually did enough for two albums. Marv was always a gentleman, and always so appreciative for anything you might do for him. He was so excited to go on the Joan Rivers Show, the one with all the old Motown artists, and on it, he not only mentioned me, but particularly he thanked my Mother for all her support to keep Motorcity going. Then in 1993, Marv was on stage in Carolina with the Drifters, and he staggered oddly while on stage, fumbled his way to the side of the stage, and dropped dead of a burst blood vessel in his brain. He was singing one minute and dead the next. But if he could have chosen any way in the world to go, there is no way he would rather have gone than singing and performing live to an appreciative audience, right up to his last minute on this Earth.

For the second time in this Marv Johnson biography, the soul singer joined Motown in 1965 after United Artists let him go. It was apt that he issued one song called, "I Miss You Baby." That single did okay. More significantly, 1966's "I'll Pick a Rose for My Rose" renewed his popularity in the U.K. in 1968. The end of that decade, however, also marked his last original recordings. Instead of giving up on Motown altogether, Johnson refreshed his relationship to it by working in sales. Despite his loyalty, that community disregarded his musical contributions in 1983's Motown 25 special. Another dismissal by old supporters.
Fortunately, he wasn't quite history. After lying dormant into the late 1980s, the performance bug bit him once more. He sang live on Motown oldies tours, and under producer Ian Levine's guidance, re-cut tracks from his and other artists' repertoires. He kept going until May 16, 1993. A stroke during a Columbia, South Carolina show gave him no further chances to remind audiences of his talents.

marv johnson was another one those artists on motown's famed "2nd tier." the amazing thing about these artists is that they weren't on that 2nd level because of lack of talent- could be just the fact that the company simply had an overabundance of a good thing and there were some who'd get the short end of the stick.
marv had the chops to make a hit- he was one of those people who could sing just about anything and make it rock and here on "i miss you baby," he certainly doesn't give anything less than 100% pure pleasure!

-The morning after (Friday) at 2am-4am (CT) and 6am-10am (CT) on NBATV, an American Cable Specialty Channel, not the original broadcast channel TNT, which is a American Cable Standard Channel.
-The majority of people in the United States don’t have Specialty Channels (b/c it cost more $$$) and on top of that, these rerun times are very inconvenient to almost all individuals with any type of responsibility (School, Work, etc.) especially seeing as they re-air early Friday mornings, a weekday.
-This show does air very late and most people have jobs, school, etc. and aren’t able to stay up and watch the original airing as well.
-This program also has fans outside the US, and they can’t enjoy the show anymore either b/c the Full Episode Website has been taken down.
-With that being said, as discussed by word of mouth and on many forums, blogs, comments, etc. the absence of the Full Episode Website put all of the shows fans at a great disadvantage and were at risk of not enjoying this Popular Emmy awarded show of 15+ years at all.

Marvin Watson Jr. (born March 19, 1976),[1] better known by his stage name Messy Marv, is an American rapper who grew up in the Fillmore district of San Francisco, California. He is the cousin of San Quinn, Stevie Johnson, and Ya Boy.
On November 2, 2007, Messy Marv was released from jail after serving twelve months on weapons charges. In the spring of 2012, Messy Marv released the hit mixtape, Da Frank Lucas Dat Neva Wore Da Mink Coat and released the hit single, "You Gotta Pay Me". In 2013, he announced the release of his newest LP "Playboy Gangsta" under his new moniker LilPaperdupMess, and released 3 singles as promotionals for the album: "We Killas", "Beautiful Kalifornia", & "A Girlfriend Ain't What I Need". Marv confirmed via Twitter a release date of July 23, 2013 for the LP.
