Dinah Washington, born Ruth Lee Jones (August 29, 1924 -- December 14, 1963), was an American singer and pianist, who has been cited as "the most popular black female recording artist of the '50s".
"All of Me" is a popular song and jazz standard written by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons in 1931. First performed by Belle Baker over the radio and recorded in December 1931 by Ruth Etting with Composition by Gerald Mark & Seymour Simons. It has become one of the most recorded songs of its era. Dinah's accompanied by Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul West (bass), Urbie Green (trombone), Max Roach (drums), Don Elliott (mellophone), Blue Mitchell (trumpet) and Terry Gibbs (vibraphone). Recorded in Newport, Rhode Island, Recorded July 6, 1958. (EmArcy Records) Dinah Washington, born Ruth Lee Jones (August 29, 1924 -- December 14, 1963), was an American singer and pianist, who has been cited as "the most popular black female recording artist of the '50s". Primarily a jazz vocalist, she performed and recorded in a wide variety of styles including blues, R&B;, and traditional pop music, and gave herself the title of "Queen of the Blues". She is a 1986 inductee of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Ruth Lee Jones was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and moved to Chicago as a child. She became deeply involved in gospel and played piano for the choir in St. Luke's Baptist Church while still in elementary school. She made her recording debut for the Keynote label that December with "Evil Gal Blues", written by Leonard Feather and backed by Hampton and musicians from his band, including Joe Morris (trumpet) and Milt Buckner (piano). Both that record and its follow-up, "Salty Papa Blues", made Billboard's "Harlem Hit Parade" in 1944. "[She] was at once one of the most beloved and controversial singers of the mid-20th century - beloved to her fans, devotees, and fellow singers; controversial to critics who still accuse her of selling out her art to commerce and bad taste. Her principal sin, apparently, was to cultivate a distinctive vocal style that was at home in all kinds of music, be it R&B;, blues, jazz, middle of the road pop - and she probably would have made a fine gospel or country singer had she the time. Hers was a gritty, salty, high-pitched voice, marked by absolute clarity of diction and clipped, bluesy phrasing..." Washington was married seven times. Her husbands were John Young (1942--43), George Jenkins (1946), Robert Grayson (1947), bassist and bandleader Walter Buchanan (1950), saxophonist Eddie Chamblee (1957), Rafael Campos (1961), and pro-football player Dick "Night Train" Lane (1963). She had two sons: George Kenneth Jenkins and Robert Grayson. Early on the morning of December 14, 1963, Washington's seventh husband Lane went to sleep with his wife, and awoke later to find her slumped over and not responsive. Doctor B. C. Ross came to the scene to pronounce her dead. An autopsy later showed a lethal combination of secobarbital and amobarbital, which contributed to her death at the age of 39. She is buried in the Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois. Jazz on a Summer's Day (1960) is a documentary film set at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island, co-filmed and co-directed by commercial and fashion photographer Bert Stern and director Aram Avakian, who also edited the movie. It was written by Albert D'Annibale and Arnold Perl. The Columbia Records jazz producer, George Avakian, was the musical director of the film. The film mixes images of water and the city with the performers and audience at the festival. It also features scenes of the 1958 America's Cup yacht races. The film is largely without dialog or narration (except for periodic announcements by emcee Willis Conover). The film features performances by Jimmy Giuffre, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Stitt, Anita O'Day, Dinah Washington, Gerry Mulligan, Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong, and Jack Teagarden. Also appearing are Buck Clayton, Jo Jones, Armando Peraza, and Eli's Chosen Six, the Yale College student ensemble that included trombonist Roswell Rudd, shown driving around Newport in a convertible jalopy, playing Dixieland. Many performances ran so long that the last act, Mahalia Jackson, did not appear on stage until after midnight, performing The Lord's Prayer. In 1999, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". All of me, why not take all of me Can't you see I'm no good without you Well take my lips 'Cause I want to loose them Well take my arms 'Cause I'll never use them Well your good-bye left me with eyes that cry How can I go on dear without you Say you took the part that once was my heart So I suggest baby that you come and get the rest of me (bridge) Well your good-bye left me with eyes that cry How do you expect me to go on dear without you Since you took the best Why don't you rush back and support the rest Come on baby, come on daddy And get all of me Yea come on baby, come on daddy and get All of me

Introduced in the 1937 film "Melody for Two" by James Melton.
Dinah Washington, original name Ruth Lee Jones (born August 29th 1924, Tuscaloosa, Alasca, U.S and died December 14th 1963, Detroit, Michigan). Black American blues singer noted for her excellent voice control and unique gospel-influenced delivery. As a child, Ruth Jones moved with her family to Chicago. Dinah won a talent contest at Chicago Regal Theater in 1938; sang in gospel circuit in 1943. She left religious field to perform in Chicago area nightclubs. About 1942/43 she adopted the stage name Dinah Washington. Joined Lionel Hampton's orchestra in 1943 and recorded on Keynote label, recorded on Apollo label in Los Angeles in 1945 and embarked on solo career 1946, signed contract with Mercury Records in 1948, and over the next decade recorded over three hundred sides. In 1958 appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1959 toured Europe and signed with the Roulette label in 1962 and owned a Detroit restaurant; performed with Count Basie and Duke Ellington in 1963. During the period from 1949 to 1955, her recordings were consistently among the Top 10 hits of the rhythm & blues charts. Even after she crossed over to the popular (pop) music market, in which she had her greatest commercial success, Washington retained many of her earlier fans because of her passionate, supple style. ----- All of me Why not take all of me Can't you see I'm no good without you Take my lips I want to loose them Take my arms I'll never use them Your goodbye left me with eyes that cry How can I go on dear without you You took the part that once was my heart So why not take all of me [Lyrics by Gerald Marks and Seymour Simons] ----------------------------------------- Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Baby, if you love me
Then show me that you care
Yes, baby, if you love me
Then please show me that you care
'Cause every time I need you
You make darn sure that you're not there
Don't drift too far, daddy
Stick around so that you'll be near
Please don't drift too far, daddy
Stick around so that you'll be near
You don't need to go out for anything
'Cause I've got everything you need right here
Yes, understandin' is somethin'
That makes everything just fine
Yes, understandin' is somethin'
That makes everything just fine
No, I'll never be contented
Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but
Blue skies
Do I see
Bluebirds
Singing a song
Nothing but
Bluebirds
All day long
Never saw the sun
Shining so bright
Never saw things
Going so right
Noticing the days
Hurryng by
When you're in love
My how they fly
Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but
Blue skies
If you can't say that you still love me
Don't tell me no lies when you call
If you can't say that you still need me
Then why say anything at all
If you can't say that you're sorry
For all the tears you've caused before
If you can't tell my heart is breakin'
Then why say anything at all
It's better not to speak a word
If those crumbs of tongue cause you pain
It's better not to let it be heard
Those lies you tell in vain
So if you can't say, I'm still your baby
Then all you say on deaf ears fall
Just walk away without a word, dear
And don't say nothin' at all
Well, cheat on, have your fun
But to your own self, the most damage is done
When your cheatin' days are over
Don't come runnin', don't come runnin' back to me
You've hurt my heart a lot of it's true
But I'm not angry, I just feel sorry for you
So when your cheatin' days are over
I don't want you to come runnin', don't come runnin' back to me
You're gonna be sorry, just you wait and see
Oh, one day you'll wake up and cry out, yeah, for me
Then you'll have a chance to meet life face to face
And search for peace of mind but find that it's no place
I still love you I confess but I've got to think of my own happiness
So when you're cheatin' days are over
Don't come runnin' back to me
I said don't come runnin'
When I looked around I felt so low down
To find you in someone else's arms
Well, what could I do or what could I say?
But do you really want it that way?
If being untrue meant that much to you
I'm certain our love has lost its charm
Oh, how could you be unfair to me?
Do you really want it that way?
My love was so blind, my heart lost its smile
How hopeless it all seem to be
You nearly destroyed the love we enjoyed
Why should this happen to me?
If you only knew what I meant to you
My skies would never be so gray
Why must I say, "We've had a lovely day"
Come and take a trip in my rocket ship
We'll have a lovely afternoon
Kiss the world goodbye and away we fly
Destination moon
Travel fast as light 'til we're lost from sight
The earth is like a toy balloon
What a thrill you get ridin' on a jet
Destination moon
We'll go up up up up
Straight to the moon we two
High in the starry blue
I'll be out of this world with you
So away we steal in a spacemobile
A supersonic honeymoon
Leave your cares below, pull the switch, let's go!
Destination moon
There once was a time when the colorful thing to do
Was to call for a date on a bicycle built for two
But cars and trains and even planes
All have had their day
Now the time is due to call for you
In the modern atomic way
We'll go up up up up
Straight to the moon we two
High in the starry blue
I'll be out of this world with you
So away we steal in a spacemobile
A supersonic honeymoon
Leave your cares below, pull the switch, let's go!
Now you say you're lonely
Said you cried the whole night through
Well you can cry me a river
Cry me a river
'Cause I cried a river over you
Oohhh
Now you say you're sorry
For being so untrue
So what?
Just cry me a river
Cry me a river
I cried a river over you
You drove me
(Bye-bye, my love)
You nearly drove me out of my head
(Bye-bye, my love)
While you never shed a tear
Remember?
I remember all you said
Told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me
And now you say you love me
Well, just to prove you do
Go on and cry me a river
I'd like to see you cry me a river
'Cause I'm tired of crying over
I'm gonna love you like nobodys loved you come rain or
come shine
High as a mountain and deep as a river come rain or
come shine
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things
But don't ever bet me cause I'm gonna be true if you
let me
You're gonna love me like nobodys loved me come rain or
come shine
Happy together unhappy together, now won't it be fine?
Days may be cloudy or sunny
We're in or we're out of the money
But I'm with you always, I'm with you rain or shine
I'm gonna love you like nobodys loved you come rain or
come shine
High as a mountain deep as a river come rain or come
shine
I guess when you met me it was just one of those things
But don't ever bet me cause I'm gonna be true if you
let me
You're gonna love me like nobodys loved me come rain or
come shine
Happy together unhappy together and won't it be fine?
Days may be cloudy or sunny
We're in or we're out of the money.
Heaven sends
A song through its doors
Just as if it seems to know
I'm exclusively yours
Knowing this
I feel but one way
You will understand too
In these words that I say
I'll close my eyes
To everyone but you
And when I do
I'll see you standing there
I'll lock my heart
To any other caress
I'll never say yes
To a new love affair
Then I'll close my eyes
To everything that's gay
If you are not there
Oh, to share each lovely day
And through the years
In those moments
When we're far apart
Don't you know I'll close my eyes
My mama done tol' me
When I was in pigtails
My mama done tol' me
A man's gonna sweet-talk and give you the big eyes
But when the sweet-talking's done
A man is a two-face, a worrisome thing
Who'll leave you to sing the blues in the night
Now the rain's a-fallin?
Hear the train a-callin, "whoo-ee!"
My mama done tol' me
Hear that lonesome whistle blowin ?cross the trestle,
"whoo-ee!"
My mama done tol? me
A-whooee-ah-whooee ol clickety-clack's
A-echoin' back th? blues in the night
The evenin? breeze?ll start the trees to cryin?
And the moon?ll hide it?s light
When you get the blues in the night
Take my word, the mockingbird'll sing the saddest kind
o song
He knows things are wrong, and he?s right
From Natchez to mobile,
From Memphis to St. Joe
Wherever the four winds blow
I been in some big towns
An? heard me some big talk
But there is one thing I know
A man's a two-face, a worrisome thing
Who?ll leave you to sing the blues in the night
The evenin breeze?ll start the trees to cryin?
And the moon?ll hide it?s light
When you get the blues in the night
Take my word, the mockingbird'll sing the saddest kind
o song
He knows things are wrong, and he?s right
From Natchez to mobile,
From Memphis to St. Joe
Wherever the four winds blow
I been in some big towns
An heard me some big talk
But there is one thing I know
A man's a two-face, a worrisome thing
Who'll leave ya to sing the blues in the night
Relax, Max
Your nerves are just like jumpin' jacks, Max
Your heart is thumpin' with a crazy sound
Hear it pound
Bumpin', bumpin', bumpin'
Jumpin' up and down
Stay cool, fool
Just take it easy
That's the rule, fool
The evenin' hasn't even started yet
So, my pet
Control yourself, control yourself
Don't get upset
Don't think I'm cold if I say you're too bold
I've been fooled by that moon up above
I want your kiss just as you want my kiss
But a kiss is no kiss without love
So relax, Max
I hate to stop you in your tracks, Max
But first you gotta prove your love to me
When you do
I'll love you, love you, love you
Like you want me to
Don't think I'm cold if I say you're too bold
I've been fooled by that moon up above
I want your kiss just as you want my kiss
But a kiss is no kiss without love
So relax, Max
I hate to stop you in your tracks, Max
But first you gotta prove your love to me
When you do
I'll love you, love you, love you
Like you want me to
Ah, come on, relax, Max
Your nerves are kinda bad there, boy
Hold it
Down, boy
Take it easy, fool
Relax yourself
The evening's young yet
Mmm, come on and relax, Max
Call me irresponsible
Call me unreliable
Go on and throw in,
Undependable too
Well, do my foolish alibies
Bore you
Well I'm not clever
Baby I just adore you
Go on and call me unpredictable
Tell me I'm inpractical
Rainbows I'm inclined to pursue
Ooh go on and call me irresponsible
Yes I'm unreliable
but it's undeniably, it's undeniably true
Birds do it,
Bees do it,
Even educated fleas do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love
In Spain the best upper sets do it,
Lithuanians and Letts do it,
Let's do it, let's fall in love
The Dutch in old Amsterdam do it,
Not to mention the Finns,
Folks in Siam do it,
Think of Siamese Twins
Some argentines without means do it
People say in Boston even beans do it
Come on let's fall in love
Electric eels, I might add, do it
Though it shocks them, I know
Why ask if shads do it?
Say, waiter, bring me shad roe
In shallow shoals English soles do it
Goldfish in the privacy of bowls do it
Now you say you're lonely
Said, you cried the whole night through
Well, you can cry me a river
Cry me a river
Cause I cried the river over you
And now you say you're sorry
For being so untrue
So what; just cry me a river
Cry me river
I cried the river over you
You drove me, nearly drove me out of my head
Why you never shared a tear
Remember, I remember all you said
Told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me
And now you say, you love me
Well, just proof you do!
Go on and cry me river
I'd like to see you cry a river
Cause I'm tired of crying over you
Should I worry about you baby, or forget you were ever on my mind?
Yes, should I worry about you baby, or forget you were ever on my mind?
I can get another man just as easy, and one that will treat me just as kind.
Should I go out and look for you baby, when I know that you're for ever gone?
Should I look for you baby, when I know you're for ever gone?
I'd be more contented if I knew you were all alone.
If you cared about me daddy, you'd come home early every night,
Yes, if you cared about me daddy, you'd come home early every night,
But you don't come home in the mornin's till you're sure it's broad daylight!
Yes, if you wanna get together baby, yes that's still okay with me,
If you wanna get together baby, that's still okay with me,
I'm always open for propositions, that I know you can plainly see!
A certain measure of innocence
Willing to appear naive
A certain degree of imagination
A measure of make-believe
A certain degree of surrender
To the forces of light and heat
A shot of satisfaction
In a willingness to risk defeat
Celebrate the moment
As it turns into one more
Another chance at victory
Another chance to score
The measure of the moment
In a difference of degree
Just one little victory
A spirit breaking free
One little victory
The greatest act can be
One little victory
A certain measure of righteousness
A certain amount of force
A certain degree of determination
Daring on a different course
A certain amount of resistance
To the forces of the light and love
A certain measure of tolerance
A willingness to rise above
A cigarette that bears a lipsticks traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words
That told you what my heart meant
A fairground's painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you
You came, you saw, you conquered me
When you did that to me
I knew somehow that this had to be
The winds of March that make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings but who's to answer
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things remind me of you
You came and you saw
Are you conquered me
When you did that to me
Don't you know I knew somehow it had to be
The winds of March that make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings but who's to answer
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things
These foolish things remind me of you
This cant be love, because I feel so well,
No sobs, no sorrows, no sighs.
This cant be love; I get no dizzy spells,
My head is not in the skies.
My heart does not stand still, just hear it beat.
This is too sweet to be love.
This cant be love, because I feel so well,
But still I love to look in your eyes.
(instrumental interlude)
My heart does not stand still, just hear it beat.
This is too sweet to be love.
This cant be love, because I feel so well,
But still I love to look in your eyes.
Time after time
I tell myself that I'm
So lucky to be loving you.
So Lucky to be
The one you run to see
In the evening
when the day is through.
Laud I only know
What I know
The passing years willl show
You kept my love so young
So new.
And time after time
You'll hear me say that I'm
So lucky
So lucky
Trouble in mind, I'm blue
But I won't be blue always,
'Cause the sun's gonna shine
In my backdoor some day.
I'm all alone at midnight
And my lamp is burnin' low
Ain't never had so much
Trouble in my life before.
Trouble in mind, that's true
I have almost lost my mind,
Life ain't worth livin,
Sometimes I feel like dyin'.
Goin' down to the river
Gonna take my ol' rockin' chair
And if the blues don't leave me
I'll rock away from there.
You been a hard-hearted mama
Great God! You been unkind
Gonna be a cold, cold papa
Cause you to lose your mind.
I'm gonna lay my head down
On some lonesome railroad line
And let the two nineteen
Pacify my mind.
Well it's trouble, oh trouble
Trouble on my worried mind,
When you see me laughin'
I saw you last night and got that old feeling
When you came in sight, I got that old feeling
The moment that you danced by, I felt a thrill
And when you caught my eye, my heart stood still
Once again I seemed to feel that old yearning
Then I knew the spark of love was still burning
There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
'cause that old feeling is still in my heart
There'll be no new romance for me, it's foolish to start
To spend one night with you
In our old rendezvous
And reminisce with you
That's my desire
To meet where gypsies play
Down in that dim café
And dance till break of day
That's my desire
We'll sip a little glass of wine
And I'll gaze into your eyes divine
I'll feel the touch of your lips
Pressing on mine
To hear you whisper low
Just when it's time to go
"Cherie, I love you so"
"You're my desire"
To hear you whisper low

He always knows the proper thing to share
He makes your blue night seem a holiday
He lies in such a fascinating way
That's why a woman loves a heel
You know that he's a phony more or less
But when he meets a lady in distress
He handles everything with such finesse
That's why a woman loves a heel
You'll meet a fellow who is on the square with you
And you ignore him, have no time for him
Or he will say, ?Let's go? and set your heart aglow
You're a won completely by a no good, so and so
He knows just how to get beneath your skin
He holds the aces, you can't win
He gets a lot of goodness out of scene
That's why a woman loves a heel
He knows just how to get beneath your skin
He always holds the aces, you can't win
He gets a lot of goodness out of scene
There is no greater love
Than what I feel for you
No greater love
Nor height so true
There is no greater thrill
Than what you bring to me
No sweeter song
Than what you sing to me
You're the sweetest thing
I've ever known
And to think that
you are mine alone
There is no greater love
in all the world, it's true
No greater love
Unforgettable, that's what you are
Unforgettable though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thought of you does things to me
Never before has someone been more
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
Unforgettable in every way
And forever more, that's how you'll stay
That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
The leaves of brown came tumblin' down, remember
In September in the rain
The sun went out just like a dying ember
That September in the rain
To every word of love I heard you whisper
The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain
Though spring is here, to me it's still September
That September in the rain
To every word of love I heard you whisper
The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain
Though spring is here, to me it's still September
That September in the rain
Summertime
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich
And your mamma's good lookin'
So hush little baby
Don't you cry
One of these mornings
You're going to rise up singing
Then you'll spread your wings
And you'll take to the sky
But till that morning
There's a'nothing can harm you
With daddy and mamma standing by
Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich
And your mamma's good lookin'
So hush little baby
If you wanna have fun come home with me
You can stay all night and play with my TV
TV is the thing this year, this year
TV is the thing this year
Radio was great, now, it's out of date
TV is the thing this year
Last night, I was watchin' old Tom Nix
My TV broke, I was in a fix
I got on the phone and called my man
Said, get here daddy as fast as you can
TV is the thing this year, oh
TV is the thing this year
Radio was great but now it's out of date
And TV is the thing this year
Now he turned my dial to channel one
I knew that this was gonna be fun
He turned my dial to channel two
That station thrilled me through and through
He moved one notch to channel three
I said, ?Oh, how I love what you're doin' to me?
He said, ?Wait a minute, let's try channel four?
Just about that time someone knocked on the door
TV is the thing this year, oh yes
TV is the thing this year
Radio was great but now it's out of date
TV is the thing this year
The way he eased into channel five
That man musta had fluid drive
He moved once more to channel six
Then he opened up his bag of tricks
On channel seven the show was late
But we got our kicks on channel eight
He turned my dial to channel nine
Said, ?Baby, your set is fine?
He moved on up to channel ten
Then we started all over again
He finally hit channel eleven
I cried mama, he treats your daughter good
TV is the thing this year
Yes, radio was great but now it's out of date
TV is the thing this year
Baby, my set will need fixin'
Was it in Tahiti? Were we on the Nile?
Long ago, say an hour or so,
I recall that I saw you smile.
And, I remember you.
Youre the one who made my dreams come true,
a few kisses ago.
I remember you.
Youre the one who said "I love you, too.
I do. Didnt you know?"
I remember, too,
a distant bell and the stars that fell
like rain out of the blue.
Well, when my life is through
and the angels ask me to recall
the thrill of them all, yeah,
My old flame, I can't even think of his name but it's
funny now and then
How my thoughts go flashing back again to my old flame
My old flame, my new lovers all seem so tame
For I haven't met a gent so magnificent or elegant as my
old flame
I've met so many who had fascinating ways
A fascinating gaze in their eyes, some who took me up to
the skies
But their attempts at love were only imitations of my old
flame
I can't even think of his name but I'll never be the same
Until I discover what became of my old flame
I've met so many who had fascinating ways
A fascinating gaze in their eyes, some who took me up to
the skies
But their attempts at love were only imitations of my old
flame
I can't even think of his name but I'll never be the same
Mad about the boy
I know it's stupid to be mad about the boy
I'm so ashamed of it but must admit the sleepless nights
I've had
About the boy
On the silverscreen
He melts my foolish heart in every single scene
Although I'm quite aware that here and there are traces
of the cad
About the boy
Lord knows I'm not a fool girl
I really shouldn't care
Lord knows I'm not a school girl
In the fury of her first affair
Will it ever cloy
This odd diversity of misery and joy
I'm feeling quite insane and young again
And all because I'm mad about the boy
So if I could employ
A little magic that will finally destroy
This dream that pains me and enchains me
But I can't because I'm mad...
I'm mad about the boy
What kind of fool am I
Who never fell in love
It seems that I'm the only one
that I have been thinking of
What kind of man is this?
An empty shell-
A lonely cell in which
an empty heart must dwell
What kind of lips are these
That lied with every kiss
That whispered empty words of love
that left me alone like this
Why can't I fall in love
Like any other man
And maybe then I'll know what kind of fool I am.
What kind of clown am I?
What do I know of life?
Why can't I cast away the mask of play
and live my life?
Why can't I fall in love
Till I don't give a damn
And maybe then
I'll know what kind of fool I am
This bitter earth
What fruit it bears
What good is love
That no one shares
And if my life is like the dust
That hides the glow of a rose
What good am I
Heaven only knows
This bitter Earth
Can it be so cold
Today you're young
Too soon your old
But while a voice
Within me cries
I'm sure someone
May answer my call
And this bitter earth
I got a man who's always late, any time we have a date,
But I love him, yes I love him,
I'm gonna walk right up to his gate and see if I can get
it straight,
'Cause I want him, I'm gonna ask him.
Say Is you is or is you ain't my baby?
The way you're actin' lately makes me doubt
Yous is still my baby, baby -
I guess my baby's found somebody new
I got a man who's always late, any time we have a date,
But I love him, yes I love him,
I'm gonna walk right up to his gate and see if I can get
it straight,
'Cause I want him, and I'm gonna ask him.
Say Is you is or is you ain't my baby?
The way you're actin' lately makes me doubt
Yous is still my baby, baby -
Did you see that I've got a lot to learn?
Well don't think I'm trying not to learn,
Since this is the perfect spot to learn -
Oooh, teach me tonight!
Let's start with the ABC of it,
Roll right down to the XYZ of it
Help me solve the mystery of it,
Teach me tonight!
The sky's a blackboard high above you,
If a shooting star goes by,
I'll use that star, to write I love you,
A thousand times across the sky.
One thing isn't very clear my love,
Should the teacher stand so near my love?
Graduation's almost here my love,
Come on and teach me tonight.
I'll use that star to write I love you,
A thousand times across the sky,
One thing isn't very clear my love
Should the teacher stand so near my love,
Graduation's almost here my love,
I got a man who's always late, any time we have a date,
But I love him, yes I love him,
I'm gonna walk right up to his gate and see if I can get
it straight,
'Cause I want him, I'm gonna ask him.
Yous is still my baby, baby -
I guess my baby's found somebody new
was a stranger in the city
Out of town were the people I knew
I had that feeling of self-pity
What to do? What to do? What to do?
The outlook was decidedly blue
But as I walked through the foggy streets alone
It turned out to be the luckiest day I've known
CHORUS
A foggy day in London Town
Had me low and had me down
I viewed the morning with alarm
The British Museum had lost its charm
How long, I wondered, could this thing last?
But the age of miracles hadn't passed,
For, suddenly, I saw you there
And through foggy London Town
The sun was shining everywhere.
This must be somethin' fine
'Cause nothin' else shakes this way
Yes, this must be somethin' fine
'Cause nothin' else shakes this way
I want to love you, Daddy
Till the night has turned to day
You say you been around
And you had a lot o' chicks
But tell me, Daddy
Have you ever got so many kicks
Yes, I may not be a doctor
But I got this thing for you
Please promise me, lovin' Papa
That you always will be true
Now, I know you're not a jockey
But I like the way you ride
I want you all the time
Right here by my side
Why don't you get it
Yes, just get your kicks
And when it gets you, Daddy
Gonna show you some new tricks
I'll have to see a mechanic
For it seems my motor won't stop
Yes, I'll have to see a mechanic
For it seems my motor won't stop
C'mon and knock me out, Papa
And we'll go around the block
If they ask me, I could write a book
About the way you walk and whisper and look
I could write a preface on how we met
So the world would never forget
And the simple secret of the plot
Is just to tell them that I love you, a lot
Then the world discovers as my book ends
How to make two lovers of friends
If they ask me, I could write a book
About the way you walk and whisper and look
I could write a preface on how we met
So the world would never forget, never, never forget
And the simple secret of the plot
Is just to tell them that I love you, allot
Then the world discovers as my book ends
How to make two lovers of friends
Take me in your arms,
Before you take your love away,
Take me in your arms
Before we part.
Let me thrill again
To your carres of yesterday,
Let me fill again
My hungry heart.
One hour of gladness
That we knew in the past,
One moment's madness,
Although it be the last, hold me fast.
Blind me with your charms,
With all the stardust in the sky,
Take me in your arms,
And then goodbye.
Well, you're a sweetheart
If there ever was one
If there ever was one
Baby, it's you
Don't you know life without you
Was an incomplete dream
You are every sweet dream
Come true
My search was such a blind one
And I was all at sea
I never thought I'd find one
Quite so perfect for me
Yes, you're a sweetheart
If there ever was one
If there ever was one
Daddy, it's you
Oh, you're a sweetheart
If there ever was one
If there ever was one
It's you
Oh, oh, baby, it's you
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Baby, it's you
Got the cut-est lit-tle way,
Like to watch you all the day,
And it cer-tain-ly seems fine
Just to think that you'll be mine.
When I see your pret-ty smile
Makes the liv-ing worth the while,
So I've got to run a-round
Tell-ing peo-ple what I've found.
And when I told them
How beau-ti-ful you are
They did-n't be-lieve me!
They did-n't be-lieve me!
Your lips, your eyes, your cheeks,
Your hair are in a class be-yond com-pare,
You're the lov-li-est girl that one could see!
And when I tell them,
And I cert-n'ly am goin' to tell them,
That I'm the man whose wife one day you'll be.
They'll nev-er be-lieve me,
They'll nev-er be-lieve me,
That from this great big world
You've cho-sen me!
Don't know how it hap-pen'd quite,
May have been the sum-mer night,
May have been, well, who can say!
Things just hap-pen an-y way.
All I know is I said "Yes!"
Hes-i-tat-ing more or less,
And you kissed me where I stood,
Just like an-y fel-low would.
And when I told them how won-der-ful you are
They did-n't be-lieve me! They did-n't be-lieve me!
Your lips, your eyes, your cur-ly hair
Are in a class be-yond com-pare,
You're the lov-li-est thing that one could see!
And when I tell them,
And I cert-n'ly am goin' to tell them,
That I'm the girl whose boy one day you'll be,
They'll nev-er be-lieve me,
They'll nev-er be-lieve me,
That from this great big world
You've cho-sen me!
I remember other days how I used to weep
Over things you said to me; I couldn't even sleep
You forgot your promises, every single vow
All you did was laugh at me, but things are different now
I cried for you; now it's your turn to cry over me
Every road has a turning
That's one thing you're learning
I cried for you; what a fool I used to be
Now I found two eyes just a little bit bluer
I found a heart just a little bit truer
I cried for you; now it's your turn to cry over me
How can I forget the hours that I worried through
Wondering the live long day just what next thing to do?
In those days you never thought anything of me
But the slave that was all yours and now at last is free
I cried for you; now it's your turn to cry over me
Every road has a turning
That's one thing you're learning
I cried for you; what a fool I used to be
Now I found two eyes just a little bit bluer
I found a heart just a little bit truer
I cried for you; now it's your turn to cry over me
I've got you under my skin
I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart
You're really a part of me
I've got you under my skin
I tried so not to give in
I said to myself this affair
Never will go so well
So why should I try to resist
When baby I know so well
That I've got you under my skin
I'd sacrifice anything
Come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of a warning voice
That comes in the night
And repeats and repeats in my ear
Don't you know little fool
You never can win
Use your mentality
Wake up to reality
But each time that I do
Just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
'Cause I've got you under my skin
I'd sacrifice anything
Come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of the warning voice
That comes in the night
And repeats how it yells, in my ear
Don't you know little fool
You never can win
Why not use your mentality
Wake up to reality
Well each time that I do
Just the thought of you
Makes me stop before I begin
'Cause I've got you under my skin
In the dark, it's just you and I
There's not a sound and there's not one sigh
Just the beat of my poor heart
In the dark
Now, in the dark I get such a thrill
Well, well, when he places his fingertips upon my lips
And he begs me, "Please be still
In the dark"
But soon this dance will be ending
And you're gonna, you're gonna be missed
Gee, but I'm not pretending
'Cause I swear it's fun, it's fun to be kissed
In the dark, in the dark
Now we will find
Oh, what the rest, what the rest have left behind
Just let them dance 'cause we're gonna find romance
Now listen honey while I say
How can you fix your mind to say you're going away
Don't say that we must part
Don't break my aching heart
You know you love me
Through for many years
Love u night and day
Can't you see my tears
How can you leave me
Listen while I say
After you've gone and left me crying,
After you've gone there's no denying,
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad,
You'll miss the dearest pal you ever had.
There'll come a time, don't you forget it,
There'll come a time when you'll regret it.
Some day when you grow lonely,
Your heart will break like mine and you'll want me
only,
After you've gone, after you've gone away
After you've gone and left me crying,
After you've gone there's no denying,
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad,
You'll miss the dearest pal you ever had.
There'll come a time, don't you forget it,
There'll come a time when you'll regret it.
Some day when you grow lonely,
Your heart will break like mine and you'll want me
only,
After you've gone, after you've gone away
Oh yeah
Mad about the boy
I know it's stupid to be mad about the boy
I'm so ashamed of it but must admit the sleepless nights
I've had
About the boy
On the silverscreen
He melts my foolish heart in every single scene
Although I'm quite aware that here and there are traces
of the cad
About the boy
Lord knows I'm not a fool girl
I really shouldn't care
Lord knows I'm not a school girl
In the fury of her first affair
Will it ever cloy
This odd diversity of misery and joy
I'm feeling quite insane and young again
And all because I'm mad about the boy
So if I could employ
A little magic that will finally destroy
This dream that pains me and enchains me
But I can't because I'm mad...
Don't know why but I'm feeling so sad
I long to try something that I've never had
I've never had no kissin', oh, what I've been missin'
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
Oh, the night is so cold and I'm so all alone
I'd give my soul just to call you my own
Got a moon above me, oh, nobody to love me
Lover man, where can you be?
I've heard it said that the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
You'll make love to me
Strange as it seems
Someday, someday we'll meet
You'll dry all my tears and you'll whisper
Sweet little things in my ear
Hugging and kissing
Oh, what I've been missing
Lover man, where can you be?
I've heard it said that the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems
Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears then you'll whisper
Sweet little things in my ear
Oh, hugging and kissing
Ohh, what I've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
Lover man, oh lover man, where can you be?
Another bride
Another june
Another sunny
Honeymoon
Another season
Another reason
For Makin' Whoopee.
A lot of shoes
A lot of rice
The groom is nervous
He answers twice
It's really killin'
That he's so willin'
to make whoopee!
Picture a little love-nest,
Down where the roses cling,
Picture the same sweet lovenest,
Think what a year can bring.
He's washing dishes
And baby clothes
He's so ambitious
He even sews
But don't forget, folks
That's what you get, folks,
for Makin' Whoopee!
Another year
Or maybe less
What's this I hear?
Well, can't you guess?
She feels neglected
And he's suspected
Of Makin' Whoopee!
She sits alone
'Most every night
He doesn't 'phone her
He doesn't write
He says he's "busy"
But she says "is he?"
He's Makin' Whoopee!
He doesn't make much money
Only a five-thousand per
Some judge, who thinks he's funny
Told him he got to pay six to her
He says: "Now judge, suppose I fail."
The judge says: "Budge, right into jail!
You'd better keep her,
I think it's cheaper
I must try to make the man love me
Make the man love me now
By and by, I will make the man happy
I know how
He must see how badly I want him
Want him just as he is
And may I say that should the man ask me
I’ll be his
Can I tell the man
Just how dearly blessed we would be?
All the beauty I see so clearly
Oh, why can’t he?
So I pray to heaven above me
Pray until day grows dim
For I wait to make the man love me
As I love him
For I wait to make the man love me
Stay away from me 'cause I'm in my sin.
Stay away from me 'cause I'm in my sin.
If this place gets raided, it's just me and my gin.
Don't try me nobody, oh, you will never win.
Don't try me nobody 'cause you will never win.
I'll fight the army, navy just me and my gin.
Any bootlegger sure is a pal of mine.
Any bootlegger sure is a pal of mine.
'Cause a good ol' bottle o' gin will get it all the time.
When I'm feeling high ain't nothing I won't do.
When I'm feeling high ain't nothing I won't do.
Get me full of liquor and I'll sure be nice to you.
I don't want no pork and I don't need no beer.
I don't want no pork and I don't need no beer.
We'll have Manhattan
The Bronx and Staten Island too
It's lovely going through the Zoo
It's very fancy
On old Delancey Street, you know
The subway charmes us so
When balmy breezes blow
To and fro
And tell me what street
Compares with Mott Street in July
Sweet push carts gently gliding by
The great big city's a wond'rous toy
Just made for a girl and boy
We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy
We'll go to Yonkers
Where true love conquers in the wilds
And starve together, dear in Childs'
We'll go to Coney
And eat bologny on a roll
In Central Park, we'll stroll
Where our first kiss we stole
Soul to soul
And tell me what street
Compares with Mott Street in July
Sweet push carts gently gliding by
The great big city's a wond'rous toy
Just made for a girl and boy
We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy!
The city's bustle cannot destroy
The dreams of a girl and boy
We'll turn Manhattan
Miss you since you went away dear
Miss you more than I can say dear
Day time night time nothing I do
Can make me forget that I still love you
Kiss you, in my dreams I kiss you
Whisp’ring darling how I miss you.
Tell me do you ever miss me
As I miss you.
(Orchestral Interlude)
Miss you since you went away dear
Miss you more than I can say dear
Day time night time nothing I do
Can make me forget that I still love you
Kiss you, in my dreams I kiss you
Whisp’ring darling how I miss you.
Tell me do you ever miss me
Now I'm mean and evil, don't you mess around with me,
Yes I'm mean and evil, don't you mess around with me,
'Cause I'll mess you up with a bang, a dozen sticks of
TNT!
First thing each mornin', I breaks me a lookin' glass,
Then I goes out on the corner, waits for a black cat to
pass.
Can't sleep while there's a howlin' dog 'neath my window
each night,
And nothin' sends me like a good bloody fight!
Yes I'm mean and evil,
But you no-good men made me that way!
Yes I'm mean and evil, even rain don't fall on me,
Yes I'm so mean and evil, even rain don't fall on me,
And I'm gonna stay that way till I find a man that's
My devotion
Is endless and deep as the ocean
And like a star shining from afar
Remains forever the same
Oh, my devotion
Is not just a sudden emotion
It will be constantly burning
And your love will kindle the flame
What a sweet beginning
To the dream I had planned
All I own is yours alone
Your wish is my command
And this sensation
Was never a mere fascination
Here in my heart, one sweet day, it started
Then with time improved my devotion to you
Here in my heart, one sweet day, it started
More than you know
More than you know
Man of my heart, I love you so
Lately Ive found you on my mind
More than you know
Whether youre right
Whether youre wrong
Man of my heart, Ill string along
I need you so
More than youll ever know
Loving you the way that I do
Theres nothing I can do about it
Loving may be all you can give
But darling, I cant live without it
Oh, how Id cry
How Id sigh
If you got tired and said goodbye
More than I show
Where are you
Where have you gone without me
I thought you cared about me
Where are you
Wheres my heart
Where is the dream we started
I cant believe were parted
Where are you
Ahhha, When we said good-bye love
Was it just a game
When I gave you my love
Was it all in vain
Ohh, All life through
Must I go on pretending
Where is my happy ending
Where are you
Please tell me where
I ask you Where
All of me, why not take all
Can't you see I'm no good without you?
Take these arms, I want to lose them
Take these lips, I'll never use them
Go, goodbye left me with eyes
How can I go on to without you?
You took the best so why not take the rest?
Why not take all of me?
All of me, why not take all of me
Can't you see I'm no good without you?
Take these arms, I want to lose them
Take these lips, I'll never use them
Go, goodbye, left me with eyes to cry
How can I go on to without
You took the part that once was my hart.
Why not take all of me?
All of me, why not take all
Can't you see I'm no good without you?
Take these arms, I want to lose them
Take these lips, I'll never use them
Go, goodbye left me with eyes
How can I go on to without you?
You took the best so why not take the rest?
Why not take all of me?
All of me, why not take all of me
Can't you see I'm no good without you?
Take these arms, I want to lose them
Take these lips, I'll never use them
Go, goodbye, left me with eyes to cry
How can I go on to without
You took the part that once was my hart.
Am I blue
Am I blue
Aint these tears, in these eyes telling you
How can you ask me am I blue
Why, wouldnt you be too
If each plan
With your man
Done fell through
There was a time
When I was his only one
But now im
The sad and lonely one...lonely
Was I gay
Untill today
Now hes gone, and were through
Our love affair is a wondrous thing
That we'll rejoice in remembering
Our love was born with our first embrace
And a page was torn out of time and space
Our love affair, may it always be
A flame to burn through eternity
So take my hand with a fervent prayer
That we may live and we may share
Well good morning baby, hmm welcome back to town.
Well good morning baby, welcome back to town.
You doing so much travellin', never know when you'll be
round.
Yes you a fine mella' fella, but you stubbord as a mule.
You love me like an angel, but you treat me like a fool.
Oh face it daddy, don't wanna have me no double cross,
'cos any time i'm ready, i can tell you baby get lost.
Yeah you're cheating on the outside, doing anything you
choose,
better come back on the inside, cos you got too much to
loose.
Don't want no trouble, i got to be the boss
hmm and if you can't play it my way, well now baby get
lost.
I could try an' stop you cheating but i just don't have
the time;
i got so many men that they all standing in line.
Oh papa you'll have to come across
(My heart cries for you)
(Sighs for you, dies for you)
(And my arms long for you)
(Please come back to me)
If you're in Arizona, I'll follow you
If you're in Minnesota, I'll be there too
You'll have a million chances to start anew
Because my love is endless for you
My heart cries for you
Sighs for you, dies for you
And my arms long for you
Please come back to me
An unimportant quarrel was what we had
We have to learn to live with the good and bad
Together we were happy, apart we're sad
This loneliness is driving me mad
My heart cries for you
Sighs for you, dies for you
And my arms long for you
Please come back to me
Please come back to me
Please come back
Well, now, it takes more than a robin to make the
winter go
And it takes two lips of fire to melt away the snow
Well, it takes two hearts a-cookin' to make a fire grow
And baby you've got what it takes
You know it takes a lot of kissin'
SPOKEN (Tell me about it)
to make a romance sweet
Ooh, it takes a lot of lovin' to make my life complete
Mmm, and it takes a lot of woman to knock me off my
feet
and baby, you've got what it takes.
I said,
mm, mm, mm. uh-huh, mm, mm, mm
Ah, ah, hah
mm, mm
You know you've got just what it takes!
Because it takes more than an effort to stay away from
It'd take more than a lifetime to prove that I'll be
true
But it takes somebody special to make me say, "I do."
SPOKEN "Oh, yeah"
And baby, you've got what it takes.
Ah, ah, hah
mm, mm, uh-huh, mm, mm, mm
You know you've got just what it takes
Because it takes oh yeah
SPOKEN **" You're back in my spot again, honey"**
SPOKEN **"I like your spot"**
To stay away from you
SPOKEN "I can't stay away from you"
It takes more than a lifetime, daddy, to prove that
I'll be true
SPOKEN "NOW it's you"
But, it takes somebody special
SPOKEN "Like me, baby"
to make me say, "I do."
And baby you've got what it takes
SPOKEN "C'mon, let's play it again, huh?"
SPOKEN "C'mon, let's do it one more time, all right?"
And baby you've got what it takes
SPOKEN "One more time, Brook"
SPOKEN "Ah-ha, OK, Ah-ha"
I'm used to misfortune, baby
Used to the bitter end
I'm used to trials and troubles
'Cause I never had a friend, a bad luck
Well, well, bad luck
Well, I'm used to trials and troubles
And bad luck don't bother me
I'm used to takin' beatings
Used to being alone
Used to being mistreated
With nobody to call my own, bad luck
Lord, Lord, Lord, Lord, bad luck
Yes, I'm used to being mistreated
And bad luck don't bother me
I'm used to being broke
Used to being sad
I'm used to lousy folks
And I'm used to being mad
A bad luck, yeah yeah yeah bad luck
Oh bad luck and lousy people
No, no, no, they don't bother me
I've been taken for a fool
I've been taken for a square
Been used for a tool
And I've been told that I'm nowhere
Bad luck, oh oh bad luck, yeah yeah bad luck, bad luck
No, no, it don't bother me
Right now I'm just a cool little fool
Blue gardenia
now I'm alone with you
and I am also blue.
He has tossed us aside
and like you, gardenia,
once I was near his heart.
After the tear drops start,
where are tear drops to hide?
I lived for an hour,
what more can I tell?
Love bloomed like a flower
then the petals fell.
Blue gardenia,
thrown to a passing breeze,
but pressed,
yes, there pressed in my book of memories.
I lived for an hour,
what more can I tell?
Love bloomed like a flower
and then the petals fell.
Blue gardenia,
thrown to a passing breeze,
but pressed
in my book of memo-ries,
but pressed
Now if I owned the Aladdin's lamp
I'd make all your dreams come true
'Cause nothing in the world
Could make me love you more than I do
And if I owned a magic clock
Then I'd keep our love brand new
But nothing in the world
Ooh, could make me love you more than I do
Don't ever doubt my feelings
My love, yes, my love is real
My darling, I'm revealing
Exactly how I feel
And if I owned a magic wand
I'd wave it for no one but you
Daddy, 'cause nothing in the world
Could make me love you more than I do
Well, if I owned a magic wand
I'd wave it for no one but you
'Cause nothing in the world
It's very clear, our love is here to stay
Not for a year but ever and a day
The radio and the telephone and the movies that we know
May just be passing fancies and in time may go
But oh, my dear, our love is here to stay
Together we're going a long, long way
In time the rockies may crumble, gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay
But our love is here to stay
*instrumental interlude*
In time the rockies may crumble, gibraltar may tumble
They're only made of clay
Love me much too much
If you let me go
Life will loseits touch
What woul I be without you?
There's no place for me without you
Never let me go
I'd be so lost if you went away
Thered be a thousand hours in a day without you
I know
Because of one caress my world was overturned
at the very start
All my bridges burned by my flming heart
You'd never leave me would you?
You couldn't hurt me could you?
Never let me go
I've got bad news baby, and you're the first to know
Yes I've got bad news baby, and you're the first to know
Well I discovered this morning that my wig is about to blow
Well I've been rocking on my feet and I've been talking all out of my head
Yes I've been rocking on my feet and I've been talking all out of my head
And when I get through talking, I can't remember a thing I've said
Now I used to be a sharpie
All dressed in the latest styles
But now I'm walking down Broadway
Wearing nothing but a smile
I see all kinds of little men
Although they're never there
I tried to push a subway train
And poured whiskey in my hair
I'm a gal who blew a fuse, I've got those blowtop blues
Last night I was five feet tall, Today I'm eight feet ten
Every time I fall downstairs, I float right up again
When someone turned the lights on me it like to drove me blind
I woke up this morning in Bellevue but I've left my mind behind
I'm a gal you can't excuse, cause I've got those blowtop blues
Well I got high last night, and I took my man to his wife's front door
Yes I got juiced last night and I took my man to his wife's front door
I've got a man, he treats me like a rat,
I said I've got a man, he treats me like a rat,
He gets me so worried I don't know where I'm at!
Papa, why are you so salty, why do you bring me down?
Mmm I said papa, why are you so salty, why do you bring
me down?
There's no complaints when my other man comes round!
When I give you all my lovin', you say I wear you out,
When I give you none at all you say you can't do without!
I ain't the gal for you, you need a different kind,
Go get a fortune tellin' woman who knows how to read your
Judge you wanna hear my plea
Before you open up your court
But I don't want no sympathy
'Cause I done cut my good man's throat
I caught him whith a trifling Jane
I warned him 'bout before
I had my knife and went insane
And the rest you ought to know
Judge, judge, please mister judge,
Send me to the 'lectric chair
Judge, judge, good mister judge,
Let me go away from here
I wanna take a journey
To the devil down below
I done killed my man
I wanna reap just what I sow
Oh judge, judge, lordy lordy judge
Send me to the 'lectric chair
Judge, judge, hear me judge
Send me to the 'lectric chair
I love him so dear
I cut him with my barlow (?)
I kicked him in the side
I stood here laughing o'r him
While he wallowed around and died
Oh judge, judge, lordy judge
Send me to the 'lectric chair
Judge, judge, sweet mister judge
Send me to the 'lectric chair
Judge, judge, good kind judge
Burn me 'cause I don't care
I don't want no one good mayor
To go my bail
I don't want to spend no
Ninety-nine years in jail
So judge, judge, good kind judge
Oh, every time it rains
It rains
Pennies from heaven
Don't you know
Each cloud contains
Pennies from heaven
You'll find your fortune fallin'
All over town
Be sure that your umbrella
Is upside down
Trade them for a package of
Sunshine and flowers
If you want the things you love
You must have showers
So when you hear it thunder
Don't run under a tree
There'll be pennies from heaven
NO ONE TO TALK WITH,
ALL BY MYSELF,
NO ONE TO WALK WITH,
BUT I`M HAPPY ON THE SHELF,
AIN`T MISBEHAVIN`,
I`M SAVIN` MY LOVE FOR YOU.
I KNOW FOR CERTAIN
THE ONE I LOVE,
I`M THRU WITH FLIRTIN`,
IT`S JUST YOU I`M THINKIN` OF,
AIN`T MISBEHAVIN`,
I`M SAVIN` MY LOVE FOR YOU.
LIKE JACK HORNER
IN THE CORNER,
DON`T GO NOWHERE,
WHAT DO I CARE,
YOUR KISSES ARE WORTH WAITIN` FOR,
BELIEVE ME.
I DON`T STAY OUT LATE,
DON`T CARE TO GO,
I`M HOME ABOUT EIGHT,
JUST ME AND MY RADIO,
AIN`T MISBEHAVIN,
Baby won't you please come home?
'Cause your daddy's all alone
I have tried in vain
Never no more to call your name
When you left you broke my heart
Because I never thought we'd part
Every hour in the day you will hear me say
"Baby come home"
Baby won't you please come home?
Because your daddy's so alone
I have tried in vain
Never no more to ever call your name
When you left you broke my heart
Because I never thought we'd part
Every hour in the day you will hear me say
"Baby come on home", daddy needs baby
What can I say, dear
After I say I'm sorry
What can I do
To prove it to you that I'm sorry
I didn't mean
To ever be mean to you
If I didn't care
I wouldn't feel like I do
I was all wrong, right or wrong
I don't blame you
Why should I take somebody like you
And shame you
I know that I made you cry
And I'm so sorry, dear
So what can I say, dear
After I say I'm sorry
Baby I'm so doggone I'm sorry
Got to prove that I'm so sorry
I made you cry and I'm so sorry, dear
What can I say, dear? What can I do?
What can I say? What can I do
After I say I'm sorry
Where are you
Where have you gone without me
I thought you cared about me
Where are you
Wheres my heart
Where is the dream we started
I cant believe were parted
Where are you
Ahhha, When we said good-bye love
Was it just a game
When I gave you my love
Was it all in vain
Ohh, All life through
Must I go on pretending
Where is my happy ending
Where are you
Please tell me where
I ask you Where
Are you
Where are you
Where have you gone without me
I thought you cared about me
Where are you
Where's my heart
Where is the dream we started
I can't believe we're parted
Where are you
When we said good-bye love
What had we to gain
When I gave you my love
Was it all in vain
All life through
Must I go on pretending
Where is my happy ending
Where are you
When we said good-bye love
What had we to gain
When I gave you my love
Was it all in vain
All life through
Must I go on pretending
Where is that happy ending
Where are you
I took a trip on a train
And I thought about you
I passed a shadowy lane
And I thought about you
Two or three cars arked under the stars
A winding stream
Moon shining down on some little town
And with each beam, the same old dream.
At every stop that we made, I thought about you
But when I pulled down the shade I really felt blue
I peeked through the crack, looked at the track
The one going back to you
Then what did I do? I thought about you.
I thought about you.
I really felt blue.
I peeked through the crack, looked at the track
The one going back to you
I gave my heart to you, the one that I trusted.
You brought it back to me all broken and busted
I sold my heart to the junkman
and I'll never fall in love again.
You took my heart because you thought you could use it.
Just like a little toy you battered and bruised it
so I sold my heart to the junkman
and I'll never fall in love again.
Like a melodrama, in a simple manner,
love played the leading part.
We had planned a happy ending.
But I'm left with a broken heart.
I'll throw away my pride and say we'll be friends, dear.
Teardrops I just can't hide 'cause this is the end, dear.
I sold my heart to the junkman
and I'll never fall in love again.
I'll throw away my pride and say we'll be friends, dear.
Teardrops I just can't hide 'cause this is the end, dear.
I sold my heart to the junkman
I wish I knew the name of the boy in my dreams,
so I could say his name is mine
I walked down every street with the sun's bright
hoping to meet to wanna hold his night
all this night
(missing text)
(missing text)
I know his tender lips, I know his sweet caress, but gosh
darn it all, I don't know his address
I wish I knew the name of the boy in my dreams,
Don't know why but I'm feeling so sad
I long to try something that I've never had
I've never had no kissin', oh, what I've been missin'
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
Oh, the night is so cold and I'm so all alone
I'd give my soul just to call you my own
Got a moon above me, oh, nobody to love me
Lover man, where can you be?
I've heard it said that the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
You'll make love to me
Strange as it seems
Someday, someday we'll meet
You'll dry all my tears and you'll whisper
Sweet little things in my ear
Hugging and kissing
Oh, what I've been missing
Lover man, where can you be?
I've heard it said that the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems
Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears then you'll whisper
Sweet little things in my ear
Oh, hugging and kissing
Ohh, what I've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be?
Lover man, oh lover man, where can you be?
Lover man, lover man, where can you be?
If they ask me, I could write a book
About the way you walk and whisper and look
I could write a preface on how we met
So the world would never forget
And the simple secret of the plot
Is just to tell them that I love you, a lot
Then the world discovers as my book ends
How to make two lovers of friends
If they ask me, I could write a book
About the way you walk and whisper and look
I could write a preface on how we met
So the world would never forget, never, never forget
And the simple secret of the plot
Is just to tell them that I love you, allot
Then the world discovers as my book ends
Whenever skies look gray to me and trouble begins to brew
Whenever the winter winds become too strong
I concentrate on you
When fortune cries nay, nay to me
And people declare youre through
Whenever the blues become my only songs
I concentrate on you
On your smile, so sweet, so tender
When at first my kiss you do decline
On the light in your eyes when you surrender
And once again our arms intertwine
And so when wise men say to me
That loves young dream never comes true
To prove that even the wise men can be wrong
The loveliness of Paris
Seems somehow sadly gay
The glory that was Rome
Is of another day
I've been terribly alone
And forgotten in Manhattan
I'm going home to my city by the bay.
I left my heart in San Francisco
High on a hill, it calls to me.
To be where little cable cars
Climb halfway to the stars!
The morning fog may chill the air
I don't care!
My love waits there in San Francisco
Above the blue and windy sea
When I come home to you, San Francisco,
Now, I'm flying high but I've got a feeling I'm falling
Falling for nobody else but you
Mama, you caught my eye and I've got a feeling I'm
falling
Show me the ring and I'll jump right through
I used to trave single-o, we chanced to mingle-o
Now I'm tingle over you
Hey, Mister Parson stand by, but I've got a feeling I'm
falling
Falling for nobody else but you
Breeze, stop moaning those wit melodies
My man has left me so I can't face the music
Without singing the blues
Rain, your rhythm on my window pane
Drives me insane because I can't face the music
Without singing the blues
My heart is so broken
I've spoken to the Lord for a little sympathy
And if He don't help me, so help me
It's the bottom of the deep blue sea for me
I'm gonna end this misery, I'm almost crazy
'Cause I can't face the music
Without singing the blues
My heart is so broken
I've spoken to the Lord for just a little sympathy
And if He don't help me, so help me
Gonna jump to the bottom of the deep blue sea for me
I'm going to end this misery, I'm going crazy
'Cause I can't face the music
Without singing the blues
Tell you I'm almost crazy, baby
I'm holding on your rope,
Got me ten feet off the ground
I'm hearin what you say but I just can't make a sound
You tell me that you need me
Then you go and cut me down, but wait
You tell me that you're sorry
Didn't think I'd turn around, and say...
It's too late to apologize, it's too late
I said it's too late to apologize, it's too late
I'd take another chance, take a fall
Take a shot for you
And I need you like a heart needs a beat
But it's nothin new
I loved you with a fire red-
Now it's turning blue, and you say...
"Sorry" like the angel heaven let me think was you
But I'm afraid...
It's too late to apologize, it's too late
I said it's too late to apologize, it's too late
Bridge (guitar/piano)
It's too late to apologize, it's too late
I said it's too late to apologize, it's too late
It's too late to apologize, yeah
I said it's too late to apologize, yeah-
I'm holdin on your rope, got me ten feet off the
When I fall in love
It will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love
in a restless world like this is
Love's ended before it's began
And the too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warm of the sun
Ohh when I give my heart
Believe, it will be completely
Or I'll never give my heart
And the moment I can feel
that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love
What kind of fool am I
Who never fell in love
It seems that I'm the only one
that I have been thinking of
What kind of man is this?
An empty shell-
A lonely cell in which
an empty heart must dwell
What kind of lips are these
That lied with every kiss
That whispered empty words of love
that left me alone like this
Why can't I fall in love
Like any other man
And maybe then I'll know what kind of fool I am.
What kind of clown am I?
What do I know of life?
Why can't I cast away the mask of play
and live my life?
Why can't I fall in love
Till I don't give a damn
And maybe then
You go to my head
You go to my head,
And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne.
You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two.
The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought
To my plea casts a spell over me
Still I say to myself: get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it can never be?
You go to my head
With smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Tho I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance,
You don't know what love is
Until you’ve learned the meaning of the blues
Until you've loved the love you’ve had to lose
You don't know what love is
You don't know how lips hurt
Until you've kissed and had to pay the cost
Until you've flipped your heart and you have lost
You don't know what love is
Do you know how a lost heart feels
The thought of reminiscing
And how lips lips that taste of tears
They lose their taste for kissing
You don't know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies
Until you've faced each dawn with sleepless eyes
You don't know what love is
Do you know how a lost heart feels
The thought of reminiscing
And how lips lips that taste of tears
They lose their taste for kissing
You don't know how hearts burn
For love that cannot live yet never dies
Until you've faced each dawn with sleepless eyes
Well You're nobody
untill somebody loves you
You're nobody untill somebody cares
You might be king, you might possess,
the world and its gold
But gold won't bring you happiness,
that is when you're growing old
Well the world is the same
You'll never change it
As sure as the stars shine above
I said you're nobody
untill somebody loves you
So find yourself somebody,
Now let me tell you, baby, [Incomprehensible]
Yes, let me tell you, baby, [Incomprehensible]
Don't forget pretty daddy
That this world is full of old men
I'm not going to be your servant
I told you time and time again
No, I'm not going to be your servant
I told you time and time again
Try to find yourself another woman
'Cause I've got myself another man
So leave me alone, baby
You're not going to worry my mind
Yes, leave me alone, baby
You're not going to worry my mind
Before I keep you, papa
I'll take any kind of man I can find
You had me once, daddy
You could have kept me all to yourself
Yes, you had me once, daddy
You could have kept me all to yourself
But now I'm sorry, baby
Willow weep for me
Willow weep for me
Bend your branches green along the stream that runs to
Listen to my plea
Hear me willow and weep for me
Gone my lovers dream
Lovely summer dream
Gone and left me here to weep my tears into the stream
Sad as I can be
Hear me willow and weep for me
Whisper to the wind and say that love has sinned
Left my heart a-breaking, and making a moan
Murmur to the night to hide its starry light
So none will see me sighing and crying all alone
Weeping willow tree
Weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down along the ground and cover me
When the shadows fall, hear me willow and weep for me
Oh, Weeping willow tree
Weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down along the ground and cover me
Though you, though you say we're through
I'll always love you
And you can depend on me
Though someone, someone that you've met
Has made you forget
Honey, you know you can count on me
Well, I wish, I wish you success
And loads of happiness
But darlin', I have to confess
I will be lonely
If you ever, oh, if you ever need a friend
I'll be yours until the end
And you can depend on me
Well, I wish, I wish you success
And loads of, loads of happiness
But, darlin', I have to confess
I will be lonely
If you ever, oh, if you ever need a friend
I'll be yours until the end
And you can depend on me
Without a song, the day would never end
Without a song, the road would never have been
When things go wrong, a man aint got a friend
Without a song
That field of corn, would never see a plow
That field of corn, would be deserted now
A man is born, but hes no good no how
Without a song
Ive got my trouble and woe, but sure as I know
The jordan will roll
Ill get along, as long as a song
Is strung in my soul
Ill never know, what makes the rain to fall
Ill never know, what makes the grass so tall
I only know, there aint no love at all
I saw the harbor lights
They only told me we were parting
The same old harbor lights that once brought you to me
I watched the harbor lights
How could I help if tears were starting
Goodbye to tender nights beside the silv'ry sea
I long to hold you near and kiss you just once more
But you were on the ship and I was on the shore
Now I know lonely nights
For all the while my heart is whisp'ring
Some other harbor lights will steal your love from me
I long to hold you near and kiss you just once more
But you were on the ship and I was on the shore
Now I know lonely nights
For all the while my heart is whisp'ring
Well, he's my guy, I don't care what he does
'Cause he's my guy, I guess he always was
He's careless about me, sometimes I don't think he tries
But once in a while he'll hug me and smile
Then I can see me in his eyes
Oh, he's my guy, I know, he'll always be
And I will try to keep that guy loving me
However he wants me, I'm his until I die
For nobody knows, better than I
That he's, yeah, he's my guy
He's my guy, I know he'll always be
And I will try, try to keep him loving me
However if he wants me, I might be his until I die
'Cause nobody knows, better than I
For all we know we may never meet again
Before you go make this moment sweet again
We wont say good night until the last minute
Ill hold out my hand and my heart will be in it
For all we know this may only be a dream
We come and go like a ripple on a stream
So love me tonight; tomorrow was made for some
Tomorrow may never come for all we know
So love me tonight; tomorrow was made for some
Good morning heartache
You old gloomy sight
Good morning heartache
Thought we said goodbye last night
I turned and tossed until it seems you heve gone
But here you are with the dawn
Wish I forget you, but youre here to stay
It seems I met you
When my love went away
Now everyday I stop Im saying to you
Good morning heartache whats new
Stop haunting me now
Cant shake you nohow
Just leave me alone
Ive got those monday blues
Straight to sunday blues
Good morning heartache
Here we go again
Good morning heartache
Youre the one
Who knows me well
Might as well get use to you hanging around
Good morning heartache
I'm an evil gal don't you bother with me, no
I said I'm an evil gal don't you mess around with me,
mmhmm
Well I'll empty your pockets and fill you with misery,
yes I will!
If you tell me good mornin'
I'm gon' tell you that's a lie
If you say hello baby I'ma give you the evil eye
I'ma evil gal don't you mess around with me, Mmhmm
I'm gonna empty your pockets and fill you with misery,
yes I will
I want caviar for breakfast, champagne every night,
I want a midnight snack for every man that I invite
I'm an evil gal don't you mess around with me, no
So goodbye baby I'm gonna set you free
Whoaaaa if you wanna be happy honey don't you mess
around with me
I said if you wanna be happy don't you mess around with
me, no
Cause I'll empty your pockets and fill you with misery
Yeah- yeah oh I'm evil
-Harmonica-
Oh if you wanna be happy don't you hang out with me, no
more
I said if you wanna be happy, honey, don't you hang out
with me
You'd better not
Cause I'll empty your pockets and I'll set you free
Fly me to the moon
And let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars
In other words hold my hand
In other words darling kiss me
Fill my life with song
And let me sing forevermore
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words please be true
In other words I love you
Embrace me
My sweet embraceable you
Embrace me
My irreplaceable you
Just to look at you
My heart grows tipsy in me
You and you alone
Bring out the gypsy in me
I love all
The many charms about you
Above all
I want my arms about you
Don't be naughty baby
Come to me
Come to me do
My sweet embraceable you
I love all
The many charms about you
Above all
I want my arms about you
Don't be naughty baby
Come to me
Come to me do
Ev'ry time we say goodbye I die a little
Ev'ry time we say goodbye I wonder why a little
Why the Gods above me who must be in the know
Think so little of me, they allow you to go
And when you're near there's such an air of spring about
I can hear a lark somewhere begin to sing about it
There's no love song finer but how strange the change
from major to minor
Ev'ry time we say goodbye
Why the Gods above me who must be in the know
Think so little of me, they allow you to go
And when you're near there's such an air of spring about
I can hear a lark somewhere begin to sing about it
There's no love song finer but how strange the change
from major to minor
Ev'ry time we say goodbye, ev'ry time we say goodbye
Ev'ry time we say goodbye, ev'ry time we say goodbye
Drinking again and thinking of when, when you loved me
I'm having a few and wishing that you were here
Making the rounds, accepting a round from a strangers
Being a fool just hoping that you'll appear
Sure, I can borrow a smoke
Maybe tell some joker a bad joke
But nobody laughs
They don't laugh at a broken heart
Oh yeah, I'm drinking again
It's always the same, that same old story
After the kicks, there's little old mixed up me
Tryin' to lose a dream that used to be
Look at me, I'm drinking again
Drinking all over town
Living for you is easy living
It's easy to live when you're in love
And I'm so in love
There is nothing in life but you
I never regret the years that I'm giving
They're easy to give when you're in love
I'm happy to do whatever I do for you
For you maybe I'm a fool
But it's fun
People say you rule me with one wave of your hand
Darling, it's grand
They just don't understand
Living for you is easy living
It's easy to live when you're in love
And I'm so in love
When it rains five days and the skies turn dark as night
When it rains five days and the skies turn dark as night
Then trouble's takin' place in the lowlands at night
I woke up this mornin', can't even get out of my door
I woke up this mornin', can't even get out of my door
There's been enough trouble to make a poor girl wonder
where she want to go
Then they rowed a little boat about five miles 'cross the
pond
Then they rowed a little boat about five miles 'cross the
pond
I packed all my clothes, throwed them in and they rowed
me along
When it thunders and lightnin' and when the wind begins
to blow
When it thunders and lightnin' and the wind begins to
blow
There's thousands of people ain't got no place to go
Then I went and stood upon some high old lonesome hill
Then I went and stood upon some high old lonesome hill
Then looked down on the house were I used to live
Backwater
blues done call me to pack my things and go
Backwater blues done call me to pack my things and go
'Cause my house fell down and I can't live there no more
Mmm, I can't move no more
Mmm, I can't move no more
There ain't no place for a poor old girl to go
How glad the many millions of annabelles and lillians
Would be to capture me
But you had such persistence, you wore down my resistance
I fell and it was swell
Im your big and brave and handsome romeo
How I won you I shall never never know
Its not that youre attractive
But, oh, my heart grew active
When you came into view
Ive got a crush on you, sweetie pie
All the day and night-time give me sigh
I never had the least notion that
I could fall with so much emotion
Could you coo, could you care
For a cunning cottage we could share
The world will pardon my mush
cause I have got a crush on you
Could you coo, could you care
For a cunning cottage
That we could share
The world will pardon my mush
The leaves of brown came tumblin' down, remember
In September in the rain
The sun went out just like a dying ember
That September in the rain
To every word of love I heard you whisper
The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain
Though spring is here, to me it's still September
That September in the rain
------ harmonica solo ------
To every word of love I heard you whisper
The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain
Though spring is here, to me it's still September
That September in the rain
That September in the rain

Someday he'll come along, The man I love
And he'll be big and strong, The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay
He'll look at me and smile, I'll understand
Then in a little while, He'll take my hand
And though it seems absurd
I know we both won't say a word
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday,
Maybe Monday, maybe not
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
We'll build a little home, That's meant for two
From which I'll never roam, Who would, would you
And so all else above
I'm dreaming of the man I love
Alone, alone with a sky of romance above
I'm alone, alone on a night that was meant for love
There must be someone waiting, Lord, who feels the way I
do
Whoever you are, please tell me are you, are you alone?
Alone on this night that we two could share alone
Alone with your kiss that could make me care
And when you come I'll promise to be your very own, yeah,
alone
Alone with a heart that was meant for you, alone
Ask me how do I feel,
Now that we're all cosy and clinging?
Well sir all I can say
Is if I were a bell I'd be ringing!
From the moment we kissed goodnight
That's the way I just gotta behave,
And if I were lamp I'd light
Or if I were a banner I'd wave.
Ask me how do I feel,
Little me with the quiet upbringing?
Well sir all I can say
Is if I were a gate I'd be swinging.
And if I were a watch I'd start popping my spring
And if I were a bell
Don't even go to a movie show
If you're not by my side,
I stay home by my radio,
But I'm satisfied!
All my flirtin' days are gone,
On the level from now on!
Don't go for any excitement now,
Books are my best company.
All my opinions have changed somehow,
Old-fashioned as can be!
When you really learn to care,
There's a thrill in solitaire!
Keepin' ou of mischief now,
Really am in love, and how!
I'm through playing with fire,
It's you whom I desire!
All the world can plainly see
You're the only one for me!
I've told them in advance
They can't break up our romance!
Living up to every vow,
I'm keepin' out of mischief now!
All the world can plainly see
That you're the only one for me!
Say I've told them, told them in advance
That they can't break up our romance!
Living up to every vow,
I'm keepin', keepin' out of mischief now!
The sky may be starless,
The night may be moonless.
But deep in my heart,
I know that you love me,
You love me, because you told me so.
Love letters straight from your heart
Keep us so near while we're apart.
I'm not alone in the night
When I can have all the love you write.
I memorize every line,
I kiss the name that you sign.
And darling, then I read again
Right from the start,
Love letters straight from your heart.
I memorize every line,
I kiss the name that you sign.
And darling, then I read again
Right from the start,
Love letters straight from your heart.
Like one more time if our love ever grows cold
And this new thrill somehow grows old
Oh, when forever for us is no more
Don't tell our friends, baby
Let me be the first to know
When you no longer care
When my dreams, you no longer share
Tell me before it starts to show
You don't have to be ashamed
Just let me be the first to know
You love me now, I feel kind of sure
Kind of sure somehow
But in this game of romance
Forever, forever is a million to one chance
Ooh Lord, when my kiss becomes an everyday thing
And my voice becomes just a busy ring
Let me put on my disguise before you go break my heart
But leave my pride
I said, please, please, please
Lord, Lord, Lord, please, yeah, yeah, yeah
You sigh, a song begins,
You speak and I hear violins
It's magic
Well the stars desert the skies
And rush to nestle in your eyes
It's magic
Without a golden wand
Or mystic charms,
Fantastic things begin
When I am in your arms
When we walk hand in hand
The world becomes a wonderland
It's magic
Well, how else can I explain
Those rainbows when there is no rain
It's magic...
Why do I tell myself
These things that happen are all really true
When in my heart I know
It isn't fair for you to taunt me
How can you make me care this way
It isn't fair for you to want me
If it's just for a day
It isn't fair for you to thrill me
Why do you do the things you do
It isn't fair for you to fill me
With those dreams that can't come true, Dear
Why is it you came into my life
And made it complete
You gave me just a taste of high life
If this is love then I repeat
It isn't fair for you to taunt me
How can you make me care this way
It isn't fair for you to want me
If it's just for today
Hide your heart from sight
Lock your dreams at night
'Cause it could happen to you
Don't count stars
Or you might stumble
For someone will drops a sigh,
And down down down, down you tumble
So keep an eye on spring
Run when church bells ring
'Cause it could happen to you
All I did was wonder
How your arms would be
You went away
I let you
We broke the ties that bind
I wanted to forget you
And leave the past behind
Still, the magic of the night I met you
Seems to stay forever in my mind
The sky was blue
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be
You came at last
Love had its day
That day is past
You've gone away
This aching heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I'm so lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing
You used to do
I grow lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely
The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I'm waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Love for sale
Appetizing young love for sale
Love that’s fresh and stiII unspoiled
Love that’s only slightly soiled
Love for sale
Who will buy? Come on now
Who would like to sample my supply?
Who’s prepared to pay the price?
For a trip to paradise?
Love for sale
Let the poets pipe off love
In their childish way
You know, I know every type of love
Better far than they
If you want the thrill of love
I’ve been through the mill of love
Old love, new love, every love but true love
Love for sale
Appetizing young, young love for sale
If you want to buy my wares
Follow me, climb the stairs
Love for sale
Love, love, love for sale
Love, love, love for sale
Love, love, love for sale
On the day I was born, said my father, said he
"I've an elegant legacy waiting for ye"
'Tis wine for your lips and a song for your heart
To sing it whenever the world falls apart
Look, look, look to the rainbow
Follow it over the hills and the streams
Look, look, look to the rainbow
Follow the fellow who follows a dream
So I bundled my heart and I roam the world free
To the east with a lark, to the west with the sea
And I searched all the earth and I scanned all the skies
And I found it at last in my own true love's eyes
Look, look, look to the rainbow
Follow it over the hills and the streams
Look, look, look to the rainbow
Follow the fellow who follows a dream
Follow the fellow, follow the fellow
Come to me without more speculation
Have no fear, give me your hand, my dear...
Trust in me in all you do
Have the faith I have in you
Love will see us through
If only you trust in me
Come to me when things go wrong
Cling to me and I'll be strong
We can get along
As long as you trust in me
While there's a moon on high
While there's a bird to fly
While there's a you and I
You can be sure I love you
Stand beside me all the while
Face the future with a smile
Trust in me and
I'll be worthy of you
*Brook*
If you're gonna give me good kissin' like that
Honey, don'tcha know I'm gonna give 'em right back to
That's a kissin' good way (that's a kissin' good way)
Ahh, that's a kissin' good way (that's a kissin' good
way)
Now, that's a kissin' good way to mess around and fall
in love
(Don't mess around, don't mess around)
*Dinah*
If you're gonna start out by huggin' me tight
Don't mess around, just a-hug me right
'cause that's a huggin' good way (that's a huggin' good
way)
That's a huggin' good way (that's a huggin' good way)
That's a huggin' good way to mess around and fall in
love
(Don't mess around, don't mess around)
*Brook*
Ya know you called me on the phone
And just because I was alone
Yes, you came around wooin'
Ahh, you'd better ask somebody if you don't know what
you're doin'
*Dinah*
Now you kissed me and you rocked my soul
And don't come around knockin' rock'n'roll
'cause that's a rockin' good way (that's a rockin' good
way)
Yes, that's a rockin' good way (that's a rockin' good
way)
That's a rockin' good way ah ah to mess around and fall
in love
(Don't mess around, don't mess around)
*Dinah*
Well, ya know you called me on the phone
And just because I was alone
You came around a-wooin'
You gotta ask somebody if you don't know what you're
doin'
*Brook*
Mmm, now that you've kissed me
and rocked my soul
Don't come around knockin' rock'n'roll
That's a rockin' good way (that's a rockin' good way)
Dinah, that's a rockin' good way (that's a rockin' good
way)
That's a rockin' good way to mess around and fall in
love
SPOKEN:
*Dinah* It's a rockin' good way
*Brook* I love to rock, how 'bout you?
*Dinah* Ahh, baby, you got what it takes
was a stranger in the city
Out of town were the people I knew
I had that feeling of self-pity
What to do? What to do? What to do?
The outlook was decidedly blue
But as I walked through the foggy streets alone
It turned out to be the luckiest day I've known
CHORUS
A foggy day in London Town
Had me low and had me down
I viewed the morning with alarm
The British Museum had lost its charm
How long, I wondered, could this thing last?
But the age of miracles hadn't passed,
For, suddenly, I saw you there
And through foggy London Town
I want a Sunday kind of love
A love to last past Saturday night
And I'd like to know it's more than love at first sight
And I want a Sunday kind of love
Oh yeah yeah
I want a a love that's on the square
Can't seem to find somebody
Someone to care
And I'm on a lonely road that leads to no where
I need a Sunday kind of love
I do my Sunday dreaming
And all my Sunday scheming
Every minute, every hour, every day
Oh I'm hoping to discover
A certain kind of lover
Who will show me the way
My arms need someone to enfold
A love to keep me warm
When Mondays are cold
A love for all my life to have and to hold
I'd like a Sunday kind of...
Where are you?
I want a Sunday kind of
I’m a Slick Chick
On a solid kick always lookin ready
Man, I’m on the mellow side
I’m a sharp queen
I make the hep cats scream
Know just how to send them
Man, I’m on the mellow side
Now when I start to jivin
Beneath a groovy moon
Jack, you’ll holler murder
And swoon, swoon, swoon
I’m a slick chick
I know that’s the lick
Gee, I’m a killer
Man, I’m on the mellow side
(Break)
Always lookin ready
Man, I’m on the mellow side
Yeah I know just how to send' em
Man, I’m on the mellow side
Ooh when I start to jivin
Beneath a groovy moon
Jack, you’ll holler murder
And swoon, swoon, swoon
I’m a Slick Chick
Don’t you know that’s the lick
Gee, but I’m a killer
Now listen honey while I say
How can you fix your mind to say you're going away
Don't say that we must part
Don't break my aching heart
You know you love me
Through for many years
Love u night and day
Can't you see my tears
How can you leave me
Listen while I say
After you've gone and left me crying,
After you've gone there's no denying,
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad,
You'll miss the dearest pal you ever had.
There'll come a time, don't you forget it,
There'll come a time when you'll regret it.
Some day when you grow lonely,
Your heart will break like mine and you'll want me
only,
After you've gone, after you've gone away
After you've gone and left me crying,
After you've gone there's no denying,
You'll feel blue, you'll feel sad,
You'll miss the dearest pal you ever had.
There'll come a time, don't you forget it,
There'll come a time when you'll regret it.
Some day when you grow lonely,
Your heart will break like mine and you'll want me
only,
After you've gone, after you've gone away
Oh yeah
After you've gone, after you've gone away
I won't cry anymore, now that you've left me
I won't cry anymore, now that you're gone
I've shed a million tears since we're apart
But tears can never mend a broken heart
I won't sigh anymore, I'll just forget you
And I'm closing the door of memories
Though you're the one love that my arms are longin' for
This is goodbye, I won't cry anymore
I won't sigh anymore, I'll just forget you
And I'm closing the door of memories
Though you're the one love that my arms are longin' for
I want to cry
When I hear your name,
Though time goes by,
I still feel the same!
I want to cry
For dreams we might have shared,
Though I know
You never have cared!
Since you went away,
I've been lonely and blue;
I spend each lonesome day
Just crying for you!
I want to cry,
for what else can I do
When I know
I'll never stop loving you?
Since you've gone away, dear,
I've been so lonesome and blue;
I spend each lonesome day
Just crying for you!
I want to cry,
for what else can I do
When I know
Now, I'm flying high but I've got a feeling I'm falling
Falling for nobody else but you
Mama, you caught my eye and I've got a feeling I'm
falling
Show me the ring and I'll jump right through
I used to trave single-o, we chanced to mingle-o
Now I'm tingle over you
Hey, Mister Parson stand by, but I've got a feeling I'm
falling
If you can't say that you still love me
Don't tell me no lies when you call
If you can't say that you still need me
Then why say anything at all
If you can't say that you're sorry
For all the tears you've caused before
If you can't tell my heart is breakin'
Then why say anything at all
It's better not to speak a word
If those crumbs of tongue cause you pain
It's better not to let it be heard
Those lies you tell in vain
So if you can't say, I'm still your baby
Then all you say on deaf ears fall
Just walk away without a word, dear
And don't say nothin' at all
Please, don't say nothin' at all
I could show the world how to smile
I could be glad all of the while
I could change the grey skies to blues
If I had you
I could leave the old days behind
Leave all my pals, I'd never mind
I could start my life all a new
If I had you
I could climb the snow capped mountains
Sail the mighty ocean wide
I could cross the burning desert
If I had you by my side
I could be a king, dear, uncrowned
Humble or poor, rich or renowned
There is nothing I couldn't do
If I had you
I could show the world how to smile
I could be glad all of the while
I could change the grey skies to blues
If I had you
I could leave the old days behind
Leave all my pals, I'd never mind
I could start my life all a new
If I had you
I could climb the snow capped mountains
Sail the mighty ocean wide
I could cross the burning desert
If I had you by my side
I could be a king, dear, uncrowned
Humble or poor, rich or renowned
Well, if I never get to heaven
It won't be because I ain't tryin'
If I never get to heaven
It won't be because I ain't tryin'
You see I've got myself an angel
And that's all I need to be my guide
If I never hit seven
Eleven once or twice ain't bad
I said, if I never hit seven
Eleven once or twice ain't bad
You see I've got myself an angel
And that's more than I ever had
He builds me up, he cuts me down
He treats me good when he's around
Sometimes he takes me out, to get [Incomprehensible]
So stop that lookin', fellas 'cause I got everything I need
You see I've got myself an angel
Standin' here by my side
Well, if I never get to heaven
It won't be because I ain't tryin'
Well, well, if I never get to heaven
It won't be because I ain't tryin'
'Cause I've got myself an angel
This lovely day will lengthen into evening, we'll sigh
goodbye to all we ever had.
Alone where we have walked together, I'll remember April
and be glad.
I'll be content you loved me once in April.
Your lips were warm and love and spring were new.
I'm not afraid of autumn and her sorrow, for I'll
remember April and you.
The fire will dwindle into glowing ashes, for flames live
such a little while.
I won't forget but I won't be lonely, I'll remember April
I'm a fool to want you
I'm a fool to want you
To want a love that can't be true
A love that's there for others too
I'm a fool to hold you
Such a fool to hold you
To seek a kiss not mine alone
To share a kiss the Devil has known
Time and time again I said I'd leave you
Time and time again I went away
But then would come the time when I would need you
And once again these words I'll have to say
"I'm a fool to want you
Pity me, I need you
I know it's wrong, it must be wrong
But right or wrong I can't get along
Without you"
I can't get along
I'm thru with love,
I'll never fall again.
Said I do to love,
Don't ever call again.
For I must have you
Or no one.
That's why I'm thru with love.
I've locked my heart.
I keep my feelings there.
I have stopped my heart
Like an icy frigidaire.
For I need to care for no one.
That's why I'm thru with love.
Why did you leave me
To think that you cared.
You didn't need me.
You have your share
of slaves around you
To hound you and swear
Their deep devotion.
Emotion.
Goodbye to spring
And all it meant to me
It can never bring
The things that used to be.
For I must have you or no one.
That's why I'm thru with love.
A cigarette that bears a lipsticks traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words
That told you what my heart meant
A fairground's painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you
You came, you saw, you conquered me
When you did that to me
I knew somehow that this had to be
The winds of March that make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings but who's to answer
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things remind me of you
You came and you saw
Are you conquered me
When you did that to me
Don't you know I knew somehow it had to be
The winds of March that make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings but who's to answer
Oh, how the ghost of you clings
These foolish things
These foolish things remind me of you
By Aunty Mod
Although I know I'm doing wrong
My love for you is still going strong
I feel that heart break you will only bring
So why do I let it keep on lingering?
To watch my love make his retreat
Deep within my heart I weep
My heart should be learning how to sing
Instead of merely waiting and lingering
It's by myself I'm walking
It's by myself I'm talking
My heart know it's too incomplete
It's only in my dreams I find
The kind of man I have in mind
So each day I face a new defeat
So by myself I'm dancing
Still in my mind I'm chancing
That this illusion will not end in tears
Maybe morning leaves him waiting
And perhaps relating that without me
You and your smile
hold strange invitation
Somehow it seems
We've shared our dreams,
ohh but where?
Time after time
in a room full of strangers
out of the blue
yeah, suddenly you're there
Wherever I go,
you're the glow of temptation
Clumsing my way
in the grey of the dawn
And always your eyes smile
at strange invitation
Then you're gone
Wait! No!
Where have you gone?
How long must I stay
in a world of illusion
But where are you
You were so near
but then you were so far a apart
Hoping you'll say with a warm invitation
Where have you been, daddy,
This lovely day will lengthen into evening, we'll sigh
goodbye to all we ever had.
I won't forget but I won't be lonely, I'll remember April
and smile.
Our little dream castle with every dream gone,
Is lonely and silent, the shades are all drawn,
And my heart is heavy as I gaze upon
A cottage for sale
The lawn we were proud of is waving in hay,
Our beautifil garden has withered away,
Where you planted roses, the weeds seem to say,
A cottage for sale.
From every single window, I see your face,
But when I reach a window, there's empty space.
The key's in the mail box the same as before,
But no one is waiting any more,
The end of the story is told on the door.
A cottage for sale.
I don't hurt anymore
All my teardrops are dried
No more walkin' the floor
With that burnin' inside
Just to think it could be
Time has opened the door
And at last I am free
I don't hurt anymore
(Chorus)
No use to deny I wanted to die
The day you said we were thru
But now that I find you're out of my mind
I can't believe that it's true
I've forgotten somehow
That I cared so before
And it's wonderful now
Heaven sends a song through its doors
Just as if it seems to know, I'm exclusively yours
Knowing this, I feel but one way
You will understand too, in these words that I say
I'll close my eyes to everyone but you
And when I do, I'll see you standing there
I'll lock my heart to any other caress
I'll never say yes to a new love affair
I'll close my eyes to everything that's gay
If you're not there, to share each lovely day
And through the years, those moments
When we're far apart
I'll close my eyes and see you with my heart
I'll close my eyes to everything that's gay
Lord, if you are not there, to share each lovely day
And through the years those moments
When we're far apart
Somebody loves me, I wonder who
I wonder who he can be
Somebody loves me, I wish I knew
Who can he be worries me
For every boy who passes me, I shout ‘Hey, maybe’
You were meant to be my loving baby, baby, oh
Somebody loves me, I wonder who
Maybe it’s you
For every boy who passes me, I shout ‘Hey, maybe’
You were meant to be my loving baby, baby
Somebody loves me, I wonder who
Maybe, it’s
Baby, it’s
Somebody else is taking my place,
Somebody else now shares your embrace;
While I am trying to keep from crying,
You go around with a smile on your face.
Little you know the price I have paid,
Little you care for vows that you made;
My heart is aching, soon will be breaking,
They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
Oh, I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be denied
They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
Oh, when your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away
I am without my love
Now laughing friends deride
Tears I can not hide
Oh, so I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes
You made me leave my happy home
You took my love and now you're gone
Since I fell for you
Love brings such misery and pain
I guess I'll never be the same
Since I fell for you
It's too bad, It's too sad
I'm in love with you
You loved me, then you snubbed me
But what can I do
I'm still in love with you
I guess I'll never see the light
I get the blues 'bout every night
Since I fell for you
It's too bad, It's too sad
I'm in love with you
You loved me, then you snubbed me
But what can I do
I'm still in love with you
I guess I'll never see the light
I get the blues 'bout every night
Don't know why
There's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Life is bare
Gloom and misery everywhere
Stormy weather
Just can't get my poor old self together
I'm weary all the time, the time
So weary all of the time
When he went away
The blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray
The lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more
Can't go on
Everything I had is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time
Keeps raining all of the time
I walk around,
Heavy-hearted and sad
Night comes around
And I'm still feeling bad
Rain pourin' down
Blinding every hope I had
This pitter 'n patter 'n beatin' 'n spatterin' drivin'
me mad
Love, love, love, love
This misery will be the end of me
When he went away
The blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray
The lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more
Can't go on
Everything I had is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps raining all the time, the time
And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that were apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust
Of yesterday
The music
Of the years
Gone by
Chorus:
Sometimes I wonder why I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song.
The melody haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you.
When our love was new, and each kiss an inspiration.
But that was long ago, and now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song.
Beside the garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
Of paradise where roses grew.
Though I dream in vain, in my heart you will remain
My stardust melody
Let's build a stairway to the stars
And climb that stairway to the stars
With love beside us to fill the night with a song
We'll hear the sound of violins
Out yonder where the blue begins
The moon will guide us as we go drifting along
CHORUS:
Can't we sail away on a lazy daisy petal
Over the rim of the hill?
Can't we sail away on a little dream
And settle high on the crest of a thrill?
Let's build a stairway to the stars
A lovely stairway to the stars
It would be heaven to climb to heaven with you
(instrumental-chorus)
Let's build a stairway to the stars
A lovely stairway to the stars
Somewhere along the line
You met this heart of mine
Would it unwind it?
Now you would shun it over a glass of wine
Friends knew it all the time
That no weeding bells would chime
I was just a young dreamer, no match for a schemer
Your's was a lover's crime
Folks gossiped, they said it was too good to be true
They even bet you'd search for someone new
This pendent world of ours was paradise
And I was blind by the star dust in my eyes
While you like gambler with his last dime
I know you will try it one more time
But I prayed like Napoleon Bonaparte
You'll meet your Waterloo somewhere along the line
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Saviour is born
Short John is my doctor, and he sho' is good to me
Yes I'm puttin' on John down, Short John's my man and he sho' is good to me
When I treat him right, I get the whole treatment for free!
He examines me carefully, takes care of my ills
Yes he examines me carefully, and he takes care of my ills
Well he checks me all over, hen he gives me the right size pills!
He said, "lay down, stretch out, and please don't look so sad"
Yes I laid down, I stretched out, and I stopped looking so sad
Cause the medicine he gave me was enough to drive most women stark ravin' mad
Now the other doctors checked me out
Cause they found nothing wrong
When Short John looked me over
I've got other ails that never shown
I cried "Doctor!", I keep singing "Doctor, I need a treatment right away
For you treat me so good, I could stand these treatments every day"
I was so tired and sick, I could hardly talk
He gave me my right size pill, I jumped up and started to walk and wail,
"Doctor, ooh doctor, another treatment right away!
Yes, you'll treat me so good, I could stand those treatments every day"
