Stanley Finch

Stanley Wellington Finch (July 20, 1872 – 1951) was the first director of the Bureau of Investigation, which would eventually become the FBI. He would soon retire from office.

Finch was born in Monticello, New York. In 1893, he became a clerk in the United States Department of Justice, where he worked off and on for almost 40 years.^[1] Finch rose from the position of clerk to that of chief examiner between 1893 and 1908. It was only while working in the Justice Department that Finch earned his LL.B degree (1908), followed by an LL.M degree (1909) from what is now The George Washington University Law School. The Washington, DC bar association admitted him to practice in 1911.

Previously when the Justice Department needed to investigate a crime it would borrow Secret Service personnel from the Treasury Department. As chief examiner, Finch advocated setting up a squad of detectives within the Justice Department.

Attorney General Charles Joseph Bonaparte created a Special Agent force, and gave oversight of the force, later named the Bureau of Investigation (BOI), to Finch. Thus he created what would become the FBI.

From 1913 to the 1930s, Finch alternated between private employment — primarily in the novelty manufacturing business—and positions in the Department of Justice. He finally retired from the Department of Justice in 1940.

Charles Finch (born 1980)^[1] is an American author of mystery novels set in Victorian era England.

Finch was born in New York City. He graduated from Phillips Academy and Yale University where he majored in English and History. He also holds a master's degree in Renaissance English Literature from the University of Oxford.^[1] He is the grandson of American artist and writer Anne Truitt.^[2] He lives in Oxford, England.^[3]

His first published novel, A Beautiful Blue Death, introduced gentleman sleuth Charles Lenox. The book was named one of Library Journal’s Best Books of 2007^[4] and was nominated for the Agatha Award for best new mystery of 2007.^[5] The September Society, Finch's second historical mystery featuring the Charles Lenox character, was published in 2008. The Fleet Street Murders came out in 2009 and was nominated for the Nero Award.^[6] A Stranger in Mayfair, the fourth Lenox mystery, was released in 2010. A Burial at Sea, the fifth in the series, was released in November of 2011. All five books are published by St. Martin's Minotaur, a division of St. Martin's Press.^[7]

Stanley William Turrentine, also known as "Mr. T" or "The Sugar Man", (April 5, 1934 – September 12, 2000) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist.^[1]

Biography[link]

Turrentine was born in Pittsburgh's Hill District into a musical family. His father, Thomas Turrentine, Sr., was a saxophonist with Al Cooper's Savoy Sultans, his mother played stride piano, and his older brother Tommy Turrentine also became a professional trumpet player.^[2]

He began his prolific career with blues and rhythm and blues bands, and was at first greatly influenced by Illinois Jacquet. In the 1950s, he went on to play with the groups of Lowell Fulson, Earl Bostic, and at the turn of the decade, Max Roach.

Turrentine received his only formal musical training during his military stint in the mid-'50s. In 1959, he jumped from the frying pan into the fire when he left the military and went straight into the band of the great drummer Max Roach.

He married the organist Shirley Scott in 1960 and the two frequently played and recorded together. In the 1960s, he started working with organist Jimmy Smith, and made many soul jazz recordings both with Smith and as a leader.

In the 1970s, after his professional split and divorce from Scott, Turrentine turned to jazz fusion and signed for Creed Taylor's CTI label. His first album for CTI, "Sugar" proved one of his biggest successes and a seminal recording for the label. He worked with Freddie Hubbard, Milt Jackson, George Benson, Bob James, Richard Tee, Idris Muhammad, Ron Carter, Grant Green and Eric Gale, to name a few. He returned to soul jazz in the 1980s and into the 1990s.

Turrentine lived in Ft. Washington, Maryland from the early 90s until his death. He died of a stroke in New York City on September 12, 2000 and is buried in Pittsburgh's Allegheny Cemetery.^[3]

Thomas Walter Turrentine, Jr. (April 22, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – May 15, 1997) was a swing and hard bop trumpeter of the 1940s to 1960s, the older brother of saxophonist Stanley Turrentine.^[1]

Biography[link]

He played in the bands of Benny Carter, Earl Bostic, Charles Mingus, Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, and Count Basie. He later recorded with Sonny Clark, Lou Donaldson, and his brother's bands. His working relationship with Max Roach was spawned in part when he joined the Max Roach Quintet in the late 1950s following the death of Clifford Brown.

While his brother had a successful career and recorded a number of albums over his lifetime, Tommy only recorded one album under his name before retiring in the 1960s. In the 1970s he lived on the ground floor of a brownstone with his wife Jane on West 82nd Street in New York City, a street which during that period had a number of jazz luminaries living along its blocks between Broadway and Central Park, including Tommy Flanagan and Pharoah Sanders. In the summer of 1979 Turrentine was one of several star trumpeters (including John Faddis and others) who appeared at the Village Gate for an all-star tribute to Blue Mitchell. Turrentine was also adept on the piano at chord blockings and was a compositional exponent of Thelonious Monk's earlier chordal voicings. His bebop compositions combined a sophisticated and emotional fusion and poignant lyricism reminiscent of Benny Golson and with the passionate, spirited influence of the Brown/Roach Quintet.

David Bolland (born June 5, 1986) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player currently playing for the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League. Nicknamed The Rat for his play like Ken Linseman the first player to earn the nickname "The Rat", Bolland was drafted by the Blackhawks in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to joining the Blackhawks full time, Bolland played in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Norfolk Admirals and Rockford IceHogs. While playing junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Bolland helped the London Knights capture the 2005 Memorial Cup. He also competed at the 2006 World Junior Championships where he helped Canada capture the gold medal. Bolland helped lead the 2009–10 Blackhawks to their first Stanley Cup championship since 1961 ending the 49 year drought.

Dave Bolland currently hosts a Celebrity Golf Tournament which is to be held on an annual basis. It is to raise money for youth programs with organizations such as The Remix Project based out of Toronto and Chicago. There were a total of 144 spots which were filled almost instantly for this tournament. The first annual tournament took place on August 3, 2011, in Toronto at the Royal Ontario Golf Club in Hornby. When the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in the 2009/10 NHL season the pair organized a Stanley Cup party at an area night club and Bolland donated all of the proceeds from the night to Remix. According to close friends, Dave Bolland is also looking to start his own foundation out of the United States based in Chicago.^[1]

Playing career[link]

Born in 1986 in Mimico, a neighbourhood of Etobicoke, Ontario at the time, Bolland started playing hockey at the local arena, Mimico Areana, were he played for the Queensway Canadiens, then playing minor hockey for the Toronto Red Wings in the Greater Toronto Hockey League from 2000 until 2002. The Redwings would go on to win the OHL All Ontario Bantam Championship with Bolland recording 4 points in the championship game.^[2]

While playing for the Toronto Red Wings, Bolland was selected in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2002 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection by the London Knights.^[3] Bolland made his OHL debut with the Knights during the 2002–03 season, where he played 63 games, scoring seven goals and adding 10 assists.^[2] During his sophomore OHL season (2003–04), Bolland increased his offensive contributions to the Knights, scoring 37 goals and adding 30 assists, while being named the club's Most Improved Player.^[2] Bolland represented the Western Conference at the 2004 OHL All-Star Game and was also chosen to participate in the 2004 CHL Top Prospects Game.^[2] Heading into the 2004 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft, Bolland was the eighth ranked North American skater by the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau.^[4] Bolland was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round (32nd overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.^[2]

Bolland made his NHL debut versus the Vancouver Canucks on October 25, 2006. Bolland started the 2007–08 season with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. Bolland spent the majority of his second professional season with the Blackhawks. He recorded his first NHL point on October 31 against the Dallas Stars and scored his first NHL goal on December 16 against the Florida Panthers. Bolland scored a game-winning overtime goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 22, 2008. Bolland had two assists for the Blackhawks in the first 30 minutes of the 2009 Western Conference Finals against the Detroit Red Wings on May 22, 2009. On June 9, 2010, Bolland became a Stanley Cup champion, in a checking role, when the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Philadelphia Flyers and won the Stanley Cup, ending their 49 year drought.
