Front railfan window view from an early morning inbound METRA Naperville Express train on the Aurora Line (aka BNSF Line aka Chicago Sub).
This train is part of the zoned service on the Aurora Line with trains making stops between Aurora and Naperville before running express to Union Station. Following behind are trains that start at Lisle and continue to Downers Grove before going express. The other two zones are Hinsdale to Congress Park and Brookfield locals.
Because this was the last express run of the morning with an all stops local following, are train was sent straight down track 3 instead of being switched to Track 2.
There was a bit of a hiccup leaving Naperville when the cab control car lost sync with the locomotive on the rear. After a reboot the train continued, but it resulted in a jump on the tape.
Sorry about the color. Increased back lighting made my earlier color balance settings fail to deal with the light green tint on the front window.

Chicago is one of the hubs for railroads in the world, and not just for freight trains, also passenger trains. The commuter service for Chicagoland is called Metra, short for METropolitan RAil. Metra uses mostly EMD F40PH locomotives for the hundreds of commuter trains they run on 11 different lines. The BNSF line from Chicago to Aurora Illinois is the busiest, and during the morning inbound and evening outbound rush hour times, action can be very heavy and busy, literally taking over the triple track main with no room in time or space for freight trains. Thousands of commuters travel to Chicago and back home every day, and Metra takes care of a big percentage of them that do not drive to and from their jobs on the interstates.
On 9/24/14, I spent 1 hour and half with uprrguy94 (here on youtube) hoping to catch some BNSF freight train action. It turns out that was a complete mistake, as we got nothing but Metra train, after Metra train... after Metra train! (Note to self and others, never go to the BNSF racetrack on weekdays between 4pm and 7pm if you want to see freight trains. That's a big boo boo right there, lol) So this is what I got on camera, because I will record Metra even as generic as it may be. Most of the locomotives seen on the BNSF line currently are F40PHM-2s, with a different looking slanted cab front, however virtually the same thing as regular F40PHs, which are seen on the BNSF line too.

Metra is the commuter rail division of the Illinois Regional Transportation Authority. The system serves Chicago and its metropolitan area through 240 stations on 11 different rail lines. Throughout the 21st century, Metra has been the second busiest commuter rail system in the United States by average weekday passenger trips. Experiencing an average growth of 1.6% in ridership per year, Metra trains offered 82.7 million passenger rides in 2011.
Utilizing Chicago's rich rail infrastructure founded in the 19th century, the Illinois General Assembly established the RTA, and later Metra, to serve commuters by railroad. Metra's creation was a result of the anticipated failure of commuter service operated and owned by various private railroad companies in the 1970s. Freight rail companies still operate some routes; however, these operations are guided by contracted service agreements. Metra owns all rolling stock and is responsible for all stations along with the respective municipalities. Since its inception, Metra has directed more than $5 billion into the commuter rail system of the Chicago metropolitan area.

Front railfan window view from an early morning inbound METRA Naperville Express train on the Aurora Line (aka BNSF Line aka Chicago Sub).
This train is part of the zoned service on the Aurora Line with trains making stops between Aurora and Naperville before running express to Union Station. Following behind are trains that start at Lisle and continue to Downers Grove before going express. The other two zones are Hinsdale to Congress Park and Brookfield locals.
Because this was the last express run of the morning with an all stops local following, are train was sent straight down track 3 instead of being switched to Track 2.
There was a bit of a hiccup leaving Naperville when the cab control car lost sync with the locomotive on the rear. After a reboot the train continued, but it resulted in a jump on the tape.
Sorry about the color. Increased back lighting made my earlier color balance settings fail to deal with the light green tint on the front window.

Chicago is one of the hubs for railroads in the world, and not just for freight trains, also passenger trains. The commuter service for Chicagoland is called Metra, short for METropolitan RAil. Metra uses mostly EMD F40PH locomotives for the hundreds of commuter trains they run on 11 different lines. The BNSF line from Chicago to Aurora Illinois is the busiest, and during the morning inbound and evening outbound rush hour times, action can be very heavy and busy, literally taking over the triple track main with no room in time or space for freight trains. Thousands of commuters travel to Chicago and back home every day, and Metra takes care of a big percentage of them that do not drive to and from their jobs on the interstates.
On 9/24/14, I spent 1 hour and half with uprrguy94 (here on youtube) hoping to catch some BNSF freight train action. It turns out that was a complete mistake, as we got nothing but Metra train, after Metra train... after Metra train! (Note to self and others, never go to the BNSF racetrack on weekdays between 4pm and 7pm if you want to see freight trains. That's a big boo boo right there, lol) So this is what I got on camera, because I will record Metra even as generic as it may be. Most of the locomotives seen on the BNSF line currently are F40PHM-2s, with a different looking slanted cab front, however virtually the same thing as regular F40PHs, which are seen on the BNSF line too.
