Lesson 1: Classical propositional logic. Logic and Paradoxes. University of Navarra MOOC
MOOC by Pablo Cobreros. This first lesson introduces the topic of paradoxes. What is a paradox and why paradoxes are interesting. Very quickly, about the sorites and the Liar paradox and some of the big names associated these discussions. Secondly, this lesson introduces the very basics of propositional logic: language and semantics, logical consequence and some features of classical logic. Finally, the lesson introduces the basic ideas underlying the method of tableaux (that will be used in subsequent lessons).- published: 20 Sep 2013

Lesson 2: Vagueness. Logic and Paradoxes. University of Navarra MOOC
MOOC by Pablo Cobreros. The philosophical discussion of this lesson is the problem of vagueness and the sorites paradox. We will read the first chapter of Rosanna Keefe's Theories of Vagueness. The philosophical discussion motivates two alternative weakenings of classical logic: K3 and LP. These logics can be defined with the aid of a three-valued semantics. We show how to extend the tableaux introduced in section 1 to deal with these logics. We evaluate the solutions to the paradox provided by these logics and introduce a third alternative logic, the logic of tolerance ST.- published: 20 Sep 2013

Lesson 3: Vagueness. Logic and Paradoxes. University of Navarra MOOC
MOOC by Pablo Cobreros. This lesson discusses about the concept of truth or, more precisely, the possibility of expressing that concept. We read and discuss the Philosophy Compass paper of Hannes Leitgeb 'What Theories of Truth Should be Like (but Cannot be)'. The logical part of this lesson considers what happens with languages enjoying self-reference and a "transparent" truth predicate. While these languages lead to inconsistency in classical logic, due to the Liar paradox, the problematic reasoning can be blocked in LP and K3. We discuss the extension of tableaux for K3 and LP in this context. We finally read and discuss the Mind paper by Cobreros, Egré, Ripley and van Rooij in which a new solution to the Liar paradox is presented which overcomes serious limitations of both K3 and LP based approaches.- published: 20 Sep 2013
