Fionn interviews Kathleen Lynch, Professor at UCD. As both an academic and an activist, her work has been guided by the belief that the purpose of scholarship and research is not just to understand the world but to change it for the good of all humanity. To this end, she worked with colleagues to establish the UCD Equality Studies Centre in 1990 and the UCD School of Social Justice in 2005. In this talk Kathleen Lynch explores how the two dominant ideologies guiding politics and state policies in Ireland impact on public life and contribute to institutionalising injustices. She also looks at issues of resistance, focusing how dissent is demonised within these frames. The talk will draw on content from a forthcoming book, in relation to education (with Bernie Grummell and Dympna Devine).
