Fionn interviews Kathleen Lynch, Professor at UCD.
As both an academic and an activist, her work has been guided by the belief that the purpose of scholarship and research is not just to understand the world but to change it for the good of all humanity. To this end, she worked with colleagues to establish the UCD Equality Studies Centre in 1990 and the UCD School of Social Justice in 2005. The goal was to create academic spaces that would develop emancipatory teaching and research practices. Outside of the university, I have worked over many years with non-governmental organisations and statutory bodies, both nationally and internationally, to challenge inequalities and promote social justice.
Her most recent book (co-authored with Bernie Grummell and Dympna Devine) is New Managerialism in Education: Commercialization, Carelessness and Gender (2012, 2015 end ed.). It is a study of the impact of new managerialism and neoliberal capitalism on primary, secondary and tertiary education.
Kathleen has published also on egalitarian theory and practice with colleagues in Equality: From Theory to Action (2004, 2009 2nd ed.) and on care and equality: Affective Equality: Love Care and Injustice (2009). Affective Equality was published in Korean in Seoul in October 2016.
From 2014-2017 she is working as an Advanced Research Scholar funded by the Irish Research Council. The subject of her research programme is: Inequality in working, learning and caring, She is also PI for Ireland for an Horizon 2020 project on the study of solidarity in Europe (SOLIDUS) 2015-2018.
Kathleen's current PhD students are working on a range of subjects including care, work and justice; social class, gender and the politics of change; immigration and exclusion; neoliberalism and higher education; criminalising young men through classed and care-related injustices and alienation and hierarchy at work.

In this talk Kathleen Lynch explores how the two dominant ideologies guiding politics and state policies in Ireland impact on public life and contribute to institutionalising injustices. She also looks at issues of resistance, focusing how dissent is demonised within these frames.
