(9 Jun 1997) 53998 Afghanistan - Taliban Captures Mazar-e-Sharif APTV Mazar-e-Sharif - 24 May 1997 (Toko material) Forces allied to the Taliban religious army have captured the stronghold of the northern warlord, Rashid Dostum, in Afghanistan. The capture of Mazar-e-Sharif leaves only a few pockets of resistance by the former government that was ousted from Kabul in September. It unites nearly all of Afghanistan under one authority for the first time since the Soviet army withdrew in 1989. The Taliban offensive is bogged down in the north against troops loyal to former government military commander Ahmed Shah Massood, his ally Sayyad Jaffar Naderi, and Uzbek fighters led by General Abdul Malik. Masood's forces again appear to have repelled a Taliban attack near near the city of Jebul Siraj. A strategic outpost on the Salang Highway, on the only road linking northern and southern Afghanistan, Jebul Siraj was seized two weeks ago by Masood's forces.
